Found this tiny grab-and-go sushi spot off University, super easy to reach by public transit and literally across from Trader Joe's -- kind of hidden, but I'm really glad Ryan put me on. The setup is simple: one open fridge stocked with fresh rolls + a heated lamp case for the hot items. Perfect when you want sushi without committing to a whole sit-down dinner. The shop itself is small and homey with only two little tables (about 2 people each), kitchen in the back, and a very sweet woman who comes out to help when you walk in. We got the salmon aburi, cterpillar roll, and special variety combo Everything tasted incredibly fresh and way higher quality than you'd expect for the price. Honestly it feels like one step above the Kura sushi nearby. Huge bonus: they give generous ginger, wasabi, soy sauce, a rare for grab and go spots. We ended up taking everything to ohlone park (about a 15 minute walk), which made it even better. If you do the same, it's a nice little stroll, and you can finish the outing with ice cream at melt me nearby. If you're a student or just want something quick, affordable, and legit fresh, this place absolutely hits!

My new go-to takeout sushi spot in Berkeley! Visited recently to catch up with a friend, and we thoroughly enjoyed our food! The restaurant serves takeout-style sushi, but the portions are generous--and the service is warm. This hidden gem is located on the corner of MLKJ and University in Berkeley--a very walkable and accessible area with ample street parking within the block. I entered the restaurant down a very short flight of stairs (I wonder if there's an ADA accessible entrance elsewhere?), and the restaurant space itself is a small, hole-in-the-wall-type place with 3 tables (8 seats total), the takeout sushi and warm food display, and the cash register. I'm guessing this is a family-run business since most of the employees looked on the younger side (2 teenagers/young 20s and a very young boy who was being trained on register) aside from an older gentleman who was restocking the takeout display. Everyone was very kind, and the older gentleman took the initiative to give us takeout bags and extra utensils for our leftovers without us asking. For the food, I ordered the special of that day--a combo sushi set with a thicccc tuna/salmon roll, a crunchy tempura roll, and salmon nigiri. My friend got a big spicy salmon roll and seaweed salad, and we also split the custard buns (shaped like ducks! so cute!!!). My special set was SOOO good! The fish was ample in every bite, perfect texture, not overly fishy flavor (fresh taste!), and the salmon nigiri was ESPECIALLY plump. Would definitely recommend this spot as THE takeout sushi place in Berkeley/Oakland (even against Ebiko in Piedmont!).

BIG bang for your buck. Sushi was so fresh like straight from the sea. Owners were this cute old Japanese couple who didn't really speak English. While we were eating they came over and gave us free sesame balls too! So sweet. I got the special sushi combo of the day, and it was DELICIOUS. We were so full by the end in the best way possible. Will definitely be back.

We got three boxes. Items listed in order of preference. Their salmon was fatty, rich, and not fishy at all. Salmon aburi: seared salmon nigiri $12 Salmon combo $19 simple maki and nigiri Spicy Crunchy salmon roll $13 Staff continuously makes more sushi in the kitchen to refill the fridge. You could also order from the menu. Grab the condiments, sauce, and utensils at checkout. Credit/cash. There's only one two-person table inside the store. Luckily, we were able to eat there. They also gave us water and complimentary sesame balls! I wish there was a place like this where I lived because I would go all the time. It's convenient, affordable, and delicious.

This is my all time favorite affordable sushi spot. The pieces here are insanely fat and always fresh not to mention the affordable af prices. The owners are so sweet and kind. If there are items you want that ran out they will make it fresh for you!! My favorite is the salmon aburi (seared salmon). I order from them at least 2-3 times a month. 10/10 absolutely no notes you definitely need to check them out. Honestly such a gem and so happy I found this spot!

My favorite sushi spot in Berkeley! Sun Sun Sushi Shop is a small store selling some of the best affordable takeout sushi in the area. The fish super fresh and the amount of fish you get at the price you pay is so worth. Great quality at even better prices. The owners of the shop are super sweet and offered free dessert to all their customers when they first opened. They continue to freshly make sushi in their kitchen to refill their fridge, but you can also order directly from them at their counter (or order online ahead of time.) HIGHLY recommend this hidden gem to anyone looking for great sushi in Berkeley!

Cute little shop. I was a little surprised to see young kids ringing me up but they reassured me their parents were in the other room, probs making the foods. One of them had given me a discount after using cash, basically 10% off. I got the unagi roll ($9) which was pretty tasty, I think the rice needed to warm to room temp a bit but other than that it hit the spot for a post-work meal. Thanks Emma W. for such a good rec, I'll def be back bc I live down the street hehe

HIGHLY RECOMMEND! Super affordable sushi that tastes soso fresh I love it. It's pretty hard to find an affordable sushi spot in the bay so this place was a life saver. The pieces of salmon were so THICK N BUTTERY I LOVE IT EEEE. Got two full trays of sushi with lotsa raw fish for a very good price. Berkeley people if you want sushi this is the SPOT. Service was great too, I placed a phone order and they even put in some extra pieces. Please go support this business, they're literally such a hidden gem‼

LOVE Sun Sun Sushi so much. A small mom and pop shop that serves quality sushi. Quality as in: -Fresh pieces of raw salmon -HUGE pieces of salmon for an AFFORDABLE price (makes you worried if they are able to profit in this economy because you genuinely want them to succeed and do well!) My boyfriend added that sometimes with affordable sushi places, salmon does NOT have a taste, but at this location you get a great fresh salmon taste! If you know you know If the reach in fridges does not have the sushi you want, you can always request it from the shop keeper/ "the dad" and he will communicate it to the back/"the mom".

We ordered the natsu yasumi roll, the riceless sakana special, mango tango roll, and the classic lion king roll. The natsu yasumi roll was one of our favorites, even though the shiso leaf flavor was quite forward. The purple rice was absolutely stunning, and each roll was vibrant and meticulously crafted. Everything looked just as impressive as it tasted. Not to mention, the rolls came out quickly despite the level of detail in the presentation. The 4.8 star rating is well deserved! Definitely worth the drive in the hills.

Everything we have had has been fresh, delicious, and well presented. The sashimi, specialty rolls, baked rolls (cooked ingredients besides tobiko), nigiri, and vegan/vegetarian rolls have all been excellent. I like the purple rice they use (sushi rice mixed with black rice) as it helps them stand out in both flavor and healthy offerings. The service is consistently on point too. Our servers have always been very courteous, attentive, and hard working. I appreciate that they can offer this level of food and service in a casual environment. I heard that they opened up a location in Albany within the last year or so that we have yet to visit. They do a great job and we're looking forward to dining with them for years to come.

Only lag was when we ordered 2 nigiri at the end and it took a really long time but I think the sushi chefs lost the order or something. Delicious sukiyaki, chicken skewers, cold tofu, salmon rolls, hamachi sashimi, Ikura and uni, tuna and Ikura nigiri, and hamachi Kama (not sure why they charge $21 and then $7 for a large when it is two small dollars that came out though). Decent wine selection - Chardonnay was good. Restaurant itself is fairly loud, especially with a baby that kept crying. But it might have been crying because it was loud. Owners should consider the Constellation System by Meyer Sound to make the dining experience more enjoyable for patrons. As this is a longtime bastion of Japanese food in the Bay, they should really invest in the sound portion of their restaurant. Prices have gone up since the last time I was here but it's not totally unreasonable. Good quality food and service. Love this place.

Now, we get to dine here as a family, and that nostalgic treat feels all the more satisfying. Food (4 stars) + Ribeye teriyaki was a hit--tender, cooked to perfection, and the kids loved it! + Lamb chop was a standout--one piece, but perfectly grilled, juicy, and tender. I could eat 2 of these with a bowl of rice and it would be a hearty meal! + Chicken karaage was solid--crispy, good portion, and a nice appetizer. It's basically a Japanese version of chicken strips that is way better than nuggets. + Salmon sashimi for the kids never disappoints. ~ Chirashi bowl was fresh and filling, though standard compared to other spots. There was a lot of rice which if we knew that we probably would've skipped the extra bowl I ordered to eat with my lamb chops. For the somewhat premium pricing, I wish they provided fresh chopped wasabi. ~ Stuffed mushroom skewer was just okay--tasty but nothing special. I guess for mushrooms it does taste kinda like a chicken meatball which could be a good thing. Service/Ambiance (4 stars) + Attentive and thoughtful service, especially accommodating a broken foot. They let my family wait at the bar instead of standing. + Ambiance is that classic Japanese vibe, busy but comfortable. Maybe not high-end, but definitely a place that feels special--especially now that we can afford it!

Pacifica Roll (10/5 stars) - the best thing we ate, perfect creation of flavors that don't overwhelm each other, it's perfectly savory Poke Salad (5/5) - does it tastes like fish? No. But it's a great combination of textures, you have the chewy king oyster mushrooms and soft fried tofu, the crunch of the veggies and the cashew dressing is addicting Da Bao (5/5) - I didn't like the vegan spam alone (I personally like this other brand more) but here they paired it well with veggies and plum wine sauce that makes it work. The vegan spam here is too smokey for my tastes but together it's good. Roasted Garlic Miso Ramen (2/5) - Honestly, it was the only not good thing we had. The broth was neither garlicky or miso-y. It was very mushroomy. It was all one could taste. The spam did not fit with the ramen and was very jarring to taste in the ramen. Yuzu Matcha (5/5) - It's sour but not too sour.
