Absolutely amazing! I just moved to SB and can confidently say I will only be going here for sushi. The staff were so nice and always checking on us. As far as the food went everything was amazing, our favorite was the blue fin nigiri, practically melts in your mouth. So fresh and delicious. Also great to notice how much the owner cares. That said, Sun Sushi has to be the absolute best Sushi place that has ever been in the entire Santa Barbara area. Ming and his entire staff are professional, efficient and very friendly, which only adds to the great environment at Sun Sushi. And as wonderful as the service and atmosphere are they both pale compared to the level of the food, which is spectacular. Each and every dish I've had there has been so well prepared, so well spiced and or marinated that I've never needed to use soy sauce as it would only take away from the incredible flavors of each dish. I went to Sun Sushi and Arigato back to back and the verdict is that Sun Sushi has the best sushi short of a trip to LA. I enjoyed sitting at the sushi bar much more than sitting at a table. The reason is that cooked food here aren't all that special, what they excel is fresh seasonal fish and the best way to eat here is to order a la carte nigiri. The chef was personable and was very proud of his creations, so don't you dare soaking those delicate sushi in soy sauce. I tried some less common species like bigfin reef squid and itoyori dai. The itoyori dai had a meltingly tender texture and I loved the squid's gelatinous but chewiness texture. The amberjack and kinmedai were also incredibly fresh with a natural savoriness. In comparison, the scallop, while fresh and sweet seemed almost mundane. Sit at the sushi bar and experience sushi in its unadulterated form, just a few specks of sea salt, a light brush of soy sauce, or a couple drops of yuzu. read more

I was disappointed for the most part. They have some kind of gross mayonnaise sauce and/or eel sauce on almost every cut roll. Tasted like miracle whip. I felt the menu was limited to many of the same things in different combos. On the bright side, the fish tasted fresh. The tempura veggies were pretty good. Not a nice strip mall, would not go back. I came here for dinner on Sunday night. It wasn't crazy busy that night. I saw omakase style with 5 courses meal on the menu. Starter was mozuku-su with shoga and vinegar. I loved it. 2nd around was abalone, salmon saikyo, kaki fried. It was very good presentation, pretty good portion. Main was 10pices chef choice sushi and toro hand roll. It was fantastic ! All the fish came from Japan and so fresh! You can choose ice cream flavor for dessert. The chefs and sever were super friendly. Had another great experience at Sun Sushi last night, so I can confirm that there actually is good sushi in SB... finally. The box sushi was really good, we considered ordering a second order of it. The albacore was so fresh, we got it in sushi form as well as roll form. Good edamame too, which is always a good sign for a sushi restaurant (how can you make good sushi if you can't even make good edamame?). We had several rolls, all of which were incredible. The Toro Mexico was delightful. Excellent sake selection (we had the Dassai 50) as well as the Shochu. I would absolutely recommend going here. Won't eat here again. I ordered an avocado roll and what they served me was shocking. The avocado was brown and black (literally) all over. It was so gross I had to send it back, and you know it's bad if you have to send avocado back. My thought is if they'd serve me avocado this way, what's up with my spicy tuna roll??
