There were two us for 60 minute massages - one was pleased, the other very disappointed. Lisa provided a strong firm massage- a good choice. Kayla offered to change up pressure to suit, but was able to sustain a firmer mode more than a single pass - really a relaxing oil rub not a massage. Facility seems clean, rose foot soak was a nice touch. Robes a bit worn and not plush - although plush is for sale in the lobby. Pick your masseuse carefully. read more

I hate to give a negative review, but I left this place with more tension than I had when I came in. Not what you want in a spa. I arrived for my 1:30 leg waxing appointment at 1:25. I probably should have arrived earlier, but I never do the spa thing (I had a gift certificate to use, otherwise this is too rich for my blood) and no one told me how early to arrive over the phone. Anyway, they gave me some paperwork to fill out after I changed into a robe. Let me just say that it's really very nice that they have a warm rose petal foot soak waiting in the "relaxation room." But I was only soaking for two minutes, and hadn't filled out even my address on the form when my esthetician came out to dry my feet and take me to the back room. I didn't protest, but I should have. I had to fill out the paperwork in the room on the wax table while she waited around like a goon. She started waxing me, but it obviously wasn't working too well. She said she was switching to a different type of wax. Then, she proceeded to dig and press her fingers into my leg to pull the skin taught and try to get all the old wax off. I was prepared for the pain of waxing, but not for the near-bruising torture that this entailed. I even asked her to stop digging into me, but she said she had to get all the wax off. She rubbed my leg lightly and said "it's not a fun treatment." As if someone who has the hair ripped from their body should be able to handle other incidental pain. Good lord. After the waxing, which went relatively smoothly, I went up to pay and they said it was $75. I said that it said $60 and up on the website, and no one told me exactly how much different the price would be, or why. I was expecting to pay $60. Call me stupid or naive, but they really should have told me upfront. "She had to use extra wax on you," said the desk girl. Way to make me feel exceptionally large and hairy. The girl did end up only charging me $60, but you could tell she wasn't happy about providing such a courtesy. It just made me feel disrespected. They should tell people at what point exactly a treatment price goes into "& up" territory. As I walked outside I noticed wax still on my legs in several spots. Too bad I didn't notice the ones on the back of my legs. There are now some really lovely wax spots on my couch I'll have to figure out how to remove. This would have been a 1 star review had it not been for the gorgeous space they have. The locker room was really nice and the amenities seemed to be there. Too bad they don't have competent or caring people to complement the decor. Dynamic!!! This is one word that can describe the spa. Also clean, professional. they know their profession. I have worked in spas before doing massage and front desk work, so I noticed some things about this spa. 1. Friendly-as soon as walked in they warmly greeted me. She also reported what I was getting for the day. I love this point because if there was any confusion it gets caught at the front end(it's sooo annoying when things change when it time to pay) 2. Clean- the locker room was clean ( the lighting is flattering too ) the wait/quiet room was relaxing and not stiff. 3. Anticipating the clients needs- they had everything there. Water, towel, hot water with rose petals, and my paper work with my name on it. I never had to ask for anything. They had it right there. These are the best points of the spa. But if they keep staff like Brianne(aesthetician)- she studied my skin, told me what I needed, then she did it while she made me feel beautiful and special. She was gentle and firm. She had products that she told me about and use on me, waiting for me when I was done with all of my appointments. And staff like Jessica-massage therapist, wow wow wow she is amazing. Her soft skills, massage skills.... she just got skills. The only thing I would change is that she lives in dallas so I can be a regular client. also the front desk girls working in 3/13/17 (I didn't catch their name) but they were so sweet and friendly. I chose this spa after reading some of the other reviews and I was not disappointed. I had the sunlight package and received a 60 minute massage a 30 minute facial and a sauna treatment. My massage was nothing short of spectacular. Micaela was able to work out knots that had troubled me for months and used the perfect amount of firm but gentle pressure. I started my massage a little wired and stressed and almost fell asleep twice during the massage I was so relaxed. Amazing! My facial was also nice. It was my first facial in 15 years so I can't say a lot, but she was kind and professional and I was never uncomfortable. I will definitely be returning! read more

I've been here many times and just received another massage/body wrap treatment yesterday and was reminded how much I love this place. Both of my services were done by Kyle Askew and she is just FABULOUS! Since I've been here before, I knew to arrive at least 10-15 minutes early so I can get changed and enjoy the rose petal footsoak with cucumber water without feeling rushed (also, the sandals they provide tend to run small, FYI). Yesterday, I started off with the nourishing body wrap treatment which is highly recommended. I used to be afraid of being slathered with algae and mud, but I have been converted. After the treatment was over (approx. 1 hour), I rinsed off in the shower and headed for my next treatment with Kyle - the hour long relaxation massage. Highly, highly recommended. I was so relaxed afterward that I almost forgot my own name. I found Tara O'Connor via a Groupon (believe it or not!) and she's amazing. The consummate professional, she really knows her skin care. I always have a calming, relaxing experience and I only half jokingly told someone just today that a facial from Tara will change your life. I look younger now than a year ago when I started seeing her and I look easily 5+ years younger than most of my friends my age. She's a little expensive but it's a regular splurge that I treat myself to The environment at Sunlight is upscale and relaxing with excellent amenities. I was scheduled for a 30 min massage. I was not told to arrive 15 min early. I was told the spa opened at 11 and not earlier. I arrived at 11. Was ready for my massage by 11:05, no one came to get me till 11:10. Massage started @ 11:15- and ended at 11:30. The txt message reminders said nothing about arriving early. Nor did I think I could arrive somewhere before it opened. I literally got a 15 min massage. No one said sorry. I was supposed to have my feet soak in petal water. Asked twice, it never happened. This was one of the most relaxing experiences I've ever had in my life! From the moment I walked in to the minute I left I felt completely valued, respected and well served. My massage was done excellently with the proper amount of pressure, Percision and the most important element... silence! My aesthetician was extremely professional and took her time to give me an amazing facial. My skin feels so soft that I left with products I hadn't intended to purchase. She finished up with a shoulder massage that made me feel like I want it to melt into a puddle of relaxation. Then I moved over to my snack in the relaxation area. Disclosure - I am a retired massage therapist. 16 yrs in the business. The atmosphere is nice, not as fancy as I'd expect for the price, but still really nice. They first send you into a locker/bathroom area to "change into a robe & slides". I unrolled the tightly rolled robe and could instantly smell the oil. For an upscale spa, I expected a better medium than your basic cold pressed almond oil that you would get at any of the local schools. Nonetheless I put it on and searched for a pair of clean slides in the basket labeled "clean"... in other words, they were not clean, nor was the floor, which was in desperate need of a good sweep & mop. There is a relaxation area where you soak your feet in a lukewarm tub filled with flower petals while you fill out your paperwork. There are blankets, chocolates, water, a cocktail menu (cash bar style) and comfy chairs & couches. The chairs could use a good cleaning along the front where oils and product from people's legs have rubbed off, turning the off white material brown. The massage room was very small and decorated with a single bamboo plant. They did have a small towel warmer & air purifier. The table linens looked very clean. The massage was very nice, yet quite basic with no frills, and as predicted, the medium was oil, rather than a professional massage lotion or gel. The scub was done with sea salt and was minimally uncomfortable. The therapist herself did a very nice job however. When finished I went back to the locker room, changed back into street clothes & went to the front to finish payment. There at the front desk was a different young lady wearing a open plaid shirt & jeans that looked a bit like street wear, rather than professional attire. They had my gift certificate (they hold it up front as you receive services) and asked for $35 dollars more in total, not including tip. In a very kind way, I informed the young lady that I had a package and the scrub should not have been an added expense. She said she had "never heard of that before" and reiterated that the scrub price was $50 (very overpriced). I told her where to find the special at the bottom of the massage menu. She found it and quietly said "oh I guess it is". I paid the correct difference and tip and left without any goodbye or reschedule request or anything. 3 stars for the massage therapist and the original idea of the place although it hasn't been taken care of properly. No stars for the products used and the unprofessional look & demeanor of the front desk staff. It's a bit of a shame this place could be and I believe it was designed to be epic! read more

I am a spa rat and am desperate search of the perfect spa in Kansas City. This is not it. The spa is in the office's of the Sunlighten Sauna company. While waiting 10 minutes for someone to take me back (Why couldn't one of the two receptionists do that?) there were deliveries going in and out, employees having phone meetings, and general office buzz. Not relaxing. The woman (one of the receptionist who finally noticed me again) took me to the entrance hallway of the spa and turned to leave. She did not give me a tour and seemed confused when I asked to be shown where to go to changed and what to do after I had changed. It felt disorganized and abrupt...like she hadn't been there before. Maybe she was new? Turns out, even though the photos on the website imply there are amenities (sauna, lounge room, outdoor space, etc.) to use when not getting your service (these are typical of most spas in this price point) there aren't any additional amenities. The locker room was not clean, as others have posted. It's also in need of repair. I changed into my robe and slippers and headed to the relaxation area, which is basically a circle of couches (also not clean, most stained) with candles, low lights, relaxing music. There was a foot soak and some paperwork waiting for me. I thought, "Ah, here we go. This is a true spa amenity." The door to the kitchen (you can order drinks and snacks, but no one offered them to me, even though I was given a menu) was right next to the relaxation area. I could hear every single thing said and done in that kitchen. I heard the massage therapists and other staff complaining about their jobs, planning their schedules, cleaning dishes, and laughing. It was not relaxing...in fact, I felt uncomfortable and out of place. This took me totally out of the experience and I just wanted to get out. My foot soak (which was very lovely) went cold and no one came to collect it. There were dirty dishes sitting in the relaxation area and as I sat there for about a half an hour, I noticed that all the people I thought were clients (because they were wearing street clothes, flip flops, and were walking around chatting and laughing) were actually employees of the spa. Most spas have a uniform or require name tags and they certainly require close-toed shoes for hygiene, so this surprised me and added to the unprofessional, unorganized feel to the whole experience. My therapist took me back to have my deep tissue massage. It was good, not great. Then the therapist left the room telling me to take my time. I took my time and left. I wasn't sure if I needed a ticket from her or if she was getting me water or what I was meant to do. I had to asked to the do the sauna after my treatment and no one seemed to know that. I asked again and was shown to a sauna. The ones that the Sunlighten people sell upstairs. The sauna had promotional material inside and I was pressed to get a membership when I checked out. Realization dawned. The spa feels like a front to sell saunas and the customer service is, therefore, an afterthought. I can not recommend this spa and I will not return. read more

I don't want to spoil it too much but when you start out soaking your feet in warm water and rose pedals - you know it's going to be good. The hot stone massage was just what I needed to distress. Top that with a 60 minute facial - seriously 60 minutes of active relaxation. I didn't want to leave. This is the first spa that has left me wanting more. I have already contacted my girlfriends so we can schedule as a group - have a little wine, have a few apps. What more can a person ask for? There are two parts to this review. First is for the Sunlighten Sauna and the second is for the service and everything else. My boyfriend gave me a gift card to this place at the suggestion of his female coworkers. They know I'm from Texas and love the heat. So I was super excited about it. The sauna was everything I thought and more. I don't know about all the "health benefits" it claims to have but it gets HOT and it's private and uber relaxing. And really that's all I care about. The sauna gets 5 stars. I'll give 3 stars for service. I tried scheduling my first session online; however, for some strange reason it's the only thing you cannot schedule online. When I called to inquire about it the girl who answered the phone acted so put out to schedule my session or even assist with picking a time. "::loud sigh:: I can schedule it for you..." It was all I could do to get her to just tell me what she has available so I can pick one instead of just calling out a bunch of times she doesn't have. It was not a good first impression. But all that was put at ease when I got there and the ladies were nice and helpful. I thought all was well until I called again the other day to schedule my 3rd session and again the girl on the line just could not be bothered to be friendly and helpful. The stupid thing is that in the two times I've been there it's never been so busy that they should feel the need to rush people off the phone. I guess the staff here can only be nice to people's faces. read more

I found the atmosphere cold and sterile. The salon is in a large space, but it's too big, leaving a feeling of starkness. The colors are cool, which to me is not warm and inviting as a spa should be. I found the staff rather rushed and snobbish, and it didn't seem they were invested in my experience. I had a facial, and I can't complain about the quality of the service itself; however, I rate a spa on the overall experience more than just the service alone. Some good things to say, some bad. I booked a prenatal massage and their "house" facial, which the girl that took my call translated to the "prenatal package." It included the elements i wanted, but also three that I didn't which meant I paid more than I signed up for. I received no appointment confirmation which would have allowed me to catch their error and didn't want to look like a moron mid-service by asking "was this included in the cost?" When I called attention to the error at check out, I got a "sorry" and that's it. The spa itself is beautiful and relaxing, I really like the place they put you in between the services. I loved the facial, it was excellent. The prenatal massage was not so great. I'm not sure if they were using "kid gloves" on me because I was pregnant, but there was zero pressure (when I specified on the form that I wanted moderate to high pressure) and the masseuse seemed to forget the order of what she was doing, massaging the same leg twice, but forgetting an arm. It was just not was I was looking for. No surveys or follow up calls after my visit, which I found strange especially given the fact that they made an error that cost me extra. What can I say....you can't pay for happiness...but you can pay for such a serene relaxation. They take you in and take care of your body! I have had the 90 facial, 90 min massage, and the purifying treatment. The purifying treatment is an dry sauna sort of thing...it's really nice after a massage but not a must have. I honestly would say if you can only do one thing get a massage. The women who did mine worked out the three knots in my back, she would heat the muscles with rice bags and them massage and repeat till I was loose as a goose. I had the hot stone massage, which was my first...probably not the best massage for me, since I'm a little sensitive (slower massages are better for me, otherwise I kind of twitch, haha) but now I know. I enjoyed the sauna afterwards, but was a little confused what to do after that. The outside of the building is a little weird, but I liked the space they have created within. OMG talk about an amazingly relaxing experience!!! I got a gift certificate here from my boyfriend for Valentine's day and finally had the opportunity to use it this past Friday. Let me tell you, they do everything possible to make you utterly relaxed. I booked the Total Escape package - 90 min facial, 90 min massage, and 30 min dry sauna, and let me just tell you up front it was so worth it that I already booked my next Total Escape in June. Anyway back to the review... As it was my first time there they walked me through the basics - robe, sauna wrap, locker rooms, etc. After getting appropriately dressed (or I guess in this case, undressed) they started me with a rose water foot soak and cucumber water. Definitely the right way to start off a relaxing afternoon! By the time Kate, my esthetician came to get me for my facial, I was well on my way to relaxed. We walked back to the facial room and she let me get settled. Kate has this way about her that immediately put me to ease. I'd only had one facial before and let me tell you that this was by far the better experience! I was in a half doze for most of the treatment! And yes, she does recommend products when she's done...but it never once felt like I was in anyway obligated to purchase them (I did, and that's more because I really liked how my face felt after my facial - it's a week later and it still feels amazing!!). Following my facial, I had a massage from Melissa. OMG if you can ask for her! As an athlete my muscles are always knotted and I need deeper pressure...and holy crap did she deliver! and this was after my regular massage with my regular masseuse not 2 days before! Post-massage I was treated to a snack plate (part of the package I'd booked) prior to my sauna session. OMG I love the private dry saunas...I'm seriously considering a membership for it. Only thing I would recommend is to bring your own reading material...as the magazines they provide are all health and/or spa oriented. I think my own book would help me pass the time. I loved their relaxation room with the foot soak and cucumber water. My therapist, Jennifer Tallman, was excellent. I would highly recommend her for anyone looking for a good, relaxing massage. I came in today to get what I thought would be a relaxing and stress free massage. It's definitely not what I got. She didn't ask me anything but told me to just lay face down on the table. The next hour was spent with what I would consider one of the worst massages I've ever had. There was a lot of pushing and pulling and vigorous movements that left me with a terrible headache for hours afterward. Her massage had no flow and I couldn't relax my body because she was all over the place. I would not recommend the therapist to anyone. The spa overall was a very nice place and everyone I encountered was very pleasant but the massage was not up to par. read more

I have been to Sunlight Day Spa on several occassions when I am in Kansas City. I can't begin to tell you what a wonderful experience it is. First, the staff is amazing, always very courteous and welcoming. They make you feel right at home which is great because who wants to come to a spa and not feel welcomed?! I always request Tara O'Connor to provide my facial/waxing services. She truly exemplifies what attention to detail really is. I'm typically a little nervous to have my eyebrows waxed in fear that they might come up missing but this is never the case with Tara. She takes her time perfecting my eyebrows and it is completely painless. Tara seems to truly care about any concerns I have with any skincare problems and takes time to explain how each product should work but never pressures me into purchasing their products (I must say that I have now become a true believer in their skincare line though, it seems to work miracles). Considering I don't live in Kansas City this is always a real treat for me when I'm in the area. I wish I could make a routine of coming here regularly. I would highly suggest Sunlight and Tara for the best services in town. read more
