For my first visit, I ordered the New Mexico omelette with house fries, tomato slices, and sourdough toast. The food came out quickly, and every bite was delicious. The staff made sure I was comfortable and had everything I needed, regularly checking in with me. Joseph was my server and did an excellent job. He was attentive and on top of everything. There was also another young lady who took my order and checked in with me a few times. I didn't catch her name, but she was very sweet and professional. Between the two of them, they really sold the experience. As for the ambiance, it's pretty much what you'd expect from a classic American diner, but very comfortable. Thought I'd finally give this place a try, thinking "how can you screw up breakfast"? Hmmm..... how indeed. I'm admittedly kind of a chicken fried steak snob. I've tried them all over the country, from great to ghastly. I decided to work without a net and just order the chicken fried steak and eggs without asking if it was frozen or not. Lesson learned. I'll never understand why restaurants feel the need to be so lazy by serving frozen anything, let alone something as easy as this. AND have the nerve to charge $19 for it. Pitiful bordering on criminal. The 'steak' was embarrassingly small, the biscuit on the side was flat and blah, and the sausage gravy was just so-so. Eggs were good (thank you chickens). I really wanted to like this place, but it was bad enough that I didn't even bother finishing because of the lack of flavor and freshness. Very sad. Really over priced for a local breakfast spot. Everything on the menu was minimum $17 and substituting items like toast were up charged. Only one option for potato's as well. The food itself was fried too much for my liking, got the omelette and there was nothing soft or fluffy about it, it was flat and the corners were blackened. Service was not fast, but they were kind at least. Interior hasn't been updated for what looks like decades and they have a giant random photo of Santorini on the wall - why? There was graffiti all over the wall when you approach the entrance as well - it's very obvious the owners don't reinvest into the property. read more

I've driven by Sunny's hundreds of times in Tempe and have always wondered how it was. Friends of mine swear by it as one of the best breakfast spots in town. From the outside it looks like just another breakfast spots....its not. I'm kinda surprised it doesn't get brought up more often, this place is great! I'm here for spring training baseball games and one of the men in our group suggested we come here from breakfast before heading out to a game and the two of us did. The restaurant about a 1/2 mile from our hotel so walked here. I ordered a chocolate chip and banana pancake that was absolutely delicious, maybe the best I've ever had. Bella, our server, could not have been nicer. She has a great sense of humor, was helpful in answering any questions and came back a couple times during our meal to see if we needed more tea, water or anything else. The restaurant is on University Dr. not far from ASU so an easy walk from the college. I'd highly recommend this restaurant to anyone visiting the area for breakfast or lunch. read more

I use to love this place but now it's going down hill this is the 2nd time they gave me my food and then gives me my check without asking if I want a refill or anything else. When you walk in they don't welcome you. Chelsea grabs the menus and walks to a table sets it down and walks away not knowing that I was suppose to follow her. First time in our servers name was Cynthia and she was very sweet. She was attentive and knowledgeable of their menu which was very helpful. I had the waffle classic which was good except my syrup was given to me cold and made my food cold faster. Mike had the Mexican omelet which was huge, he got his with home fries and bacon. He had been here before so it may become a hide away breakfast joint for us, we'll see. They are only open for breakfast and lunch here. The sides were very large and they charged us $2 each which we really only needed 1... so not sure on the miscommunication of sizes lol. Been eyeing this diner for a couple months now since moving to Mesa. They did not disappoint, our server was a young gentleman who was attentive and kind. The BLT was sooo good, fresh produce (avocado is a must) and fries were not soggy and greasy. My boyfriend got the chocolate chip waffle and loved it. SENTRY - WATCHING RESTAURANTS Sunny's Diner 1825 E University Drive Tempe Companion and I decided to try this restaurant for a breakfast and were totally surprised. Sunny's has been at this location for a long time and I have passed it by probably a hundred times without stopping in. While parking is a bit of a problem in a crowded parking lot, the inside is spacious. We were seated immediately and were offered a drink to start with. Coffee was very good and an assortment of creamers accompanied it. The menu is huge and it takes a bit of time to peruse the entire thing, but we eventually made our choices. I ordered the Chicken Fried Steak breakfast which came with three eggs, hash browns and English muffin {my choice}. What arrived was a huge portion. A perfectly done portion of chicken fried steak along with 3 nicely cooked eggs the way I ordered them and excellent hash browns. All items were cooked exactly the way I ordered them. Companion ordered the Cowboy Skillet. Home Fries layered with sauteed onions, bell peppers, melted jack cheese, chicken fried steak and sausage gravy. Only complaint was that the portion was huge and could not be finished. Sanitation was good and service by Hailey was well above what is usual in diners. A good place for a breakfast or lunch but bring your appetite! 5 stars for excellent food, service and sanitation. A rarity these days. read more

I got the normal French toast and it was just stellar. The feel of the restaurant is a good, classic, American diner. It feels very homely and it's just perfect in location. I came here today with a friend and it was very busy. That was a good sign of what we had in store for food. The menu is one of the largest I've seen in a long while. I wanted to try everything! It looked so good. I settled on the California Benedict without tomatoes. The home fries were so good as well, I was on cloud nine. The eggs Benedict was really tasty too. My only issue was the hollandaise sauce was a bit too tangy. I'm not sure what it was but it was thicker and tangier than I'm used to with this dish.
