The line may extend out onto Franklin St., but trust me, it's worth the wait! Which, by the way, the wait is not long at all; the people inside are like magicians. If you think you'll beat the line by going inside and ordering, you may be wrong - there is a 3 person limit indoors, and once I went and had to wait for this couple in front of me while I saw each car pass me by and win out. Anyway, once I ordered three different biscuits, and they were out and ready even before I was ready to pay inside. I was so happy with the quick service. HOWEVER, all three of the biscuit sandwiches were WRONG. Mine was supposed to be only egg and cheese, but it came with fried chicken. Another was supposed to have no egg, but it came with egg. This was the most unfortunate, because the person eating that biscuit is allergic to eggs. The last biscuit was supposed to have spinach and tomato, but both were missing. These mishaps were mostly just annoying because I'd rather have them take 5 extra minutes to get the orders correct instead of being unusually fast and get everything incorrect. To top it off, I'm not sure what I paid for - was it my original order or the ones I actually got? Even still, everyone enjoyed their biscuits! I especially loved the fried chicken; it is divine. I've had these at other places, and I'm always disappointed. No one can even touch how they make their biscuits or their fried chicken. In all honesty the hasbrown was absolutely dripping in grease (so much so that I could of changed the oil in my car with it). When I moved to the Chapel Hill area about 4 years ago, one of the first things I heard about was "Sunrise Biscuit Kitchen". I HAD to check them out. It's a small drive through off Franklin St close to Estes Dr. I got a Chicken and cheese biscuit and it was AMAZING! It was steamy hot, huge with gooey cheese melted and so wonderful. I was in heaven~ I went back a few weeks later and tried their hamburger; also good and tasty. I have been here about 4-5 times (and loved it) and actually went yesterday with no issues. Returned today as it was so good yesterday, and the lady taking orders at drive-thru window was less than kind. I placed my order when she asked and then heard nothing else. No confirmation, no total, no "pull up please." So I waited and eventually looked at the window to see if I needed to wait or pull up. She saw me and rudely said "$10.XX." I was taken aback cause I hadn't done anything wrong but as I'm pulling up I can see by her body language she is frustrated with ME. I kindly pull ahead and "I'm sorry, i couldn't hear you." She didn't even acknowledge anything I said. She rudely told me my total and put her hand out for the payment. I said again "i'm really sorry, i didn't hear a thing." She gave me my food and drink and change and didn't say another word. I assume she's having a really rough AM and I'm sorry. I'm even more sorry this will be the last time me and my family go to this establishment. I surely hope the management team can share my review and talk to her. Like I said, maybe she is just having a bad morning, but as a customer, i literally did nothing wrong and I drove away feeling like I wasn't welcome there anymore and she was frustrated and mad at me. Sunrise (Biscuit Kitchen) is an absolute establishment in Chapel Hill. Even Durhamites are known to make the trip down 15-501 to score some freshly baked biscuits. My favorite combo is the Bad Grandpa which includes a bacon egg and cheese biscuit WITH fried chicken in the middle. You also get delicious hash browns and a drink. I recommend an Arnold Palmer to wash it all down. On the weekend, the drive thru line can get a bit out of hand but it is worth the wait. Whether you visit at 7am or 2:30 am - for those late mornings - you'll always receive a fresh biscuit. Make sure you stop at Sunrise on your way in or out of town. Damn good biscuits! We happened to be heading over to Chapel Hill on a Saturday morning and I knew it would be the perfect opportunity to finally try out Sunrise Biscuit Kitchen! To my shock and awe we arrived to a line of cars going out into one of the lanes so I got even more excited! After about a 20 minute wait it was time to rock and roll, the menu is very simple. Biscuits with eggs and various meat and cheese options, soft drinks and sandwiches (but who wants that when you can have a biscuit?!). You really don't have a lot of browsing time because the menu is set up right at the speaker. We each got egg and cheese with a coke and hash brown and pulled up about 10 feet to the window where our food and drinks were coming in the window about 15 seconds later! We pulled away and found a parking spot nearby with some picnic tables set up where we ate our meals. The biscuit is 10/10 super yum love love love it. The egg and cheese were definitely not fresh or "real" and the hash brown was one of those single big ones you maybe get at McDonalds (don't quote me in this). Overall delish, but I think I would forgo the egg and cheese, order a bunch of biscuits and bring them home to make myself, although the prices were very affordable here! read more

The reality of Sunrise Biscuit Kitchen is that it's partly for the food and partly for the experience of eating at a Chapel Hill standard. This place is often "packed" (meaning, a line of cars into the road - as they are mostly drive-through with limited walk-up). People come here because it's a quality biscuit with quality filling. Sure, you can go to a place with much better coffee (like, anywhere at all - seriously, coffee is so bad, just don't get it) or that may serve donuts - but the biscuits are still beyond compare. A good biscuit is fluffy, but not too fluffy. Not over-cooked, nor under-cooked. It has the right amount of butter and salt, but doesn't detract from the myriad of things you may want in the biscuit: cheese, sausage, egg, ham, chicken, etc. If you don't like it, that's fine - you may simply not be a fan of this style of cooking. Sunrise Biscuit is food of the gods. My mother and I ate here everyday for 3 days, I am not kidding. We wanted to branch out and try other places, I swear. But it just did not happen. As soon as we were both awake, one of us would ask, "so, do you feel like a biscuit?" The answer was always "yes", and will always be "yes" because neither of us could produce a decent biscuit if our lives depended on it. Don't as me why, both of us are good bakers, we've mastered pies, scones, meringues. It's like the baking soda just gives up or it knows we are "yankees" or something and we just end up with flour hockey pucks. So when in the south, we must get our fill. Sunrise makes, without a doubt, the best biscuits I have ever had. They are light, fluffy, flavorful, and never dried out. Just glorious. We have sampled the country ham, fried chicken and pork chop versions and the chicken is the clear winner. The pork chop is good as well, but good lord is that chicken divine. It totally blows my mind that so many places down here can take a chicken breast- the driest, least flavorful part of the chicken- and turn it into one of the most juicy, tasty, succulent things I have ever eaten. Add to that some sweet-as-pie servers and I am totally sold. I kind of find the warmness of people in the south strange and often scary. But here, it doesn't feel at all contrived. Also, how they can produce any food in that little shack and maintain such a good attitude is beyond my comprehension. Finally, these biscuits should come with a warning: will give you the itis. "The itis" is now my mother's favorite term now, by the way, I think she's happy to have a simple way to describe why she needs a nap after eating her chicken biscuit. read more

When you see a place that is only open for breakfast and lunch, it's generally for one of two reasons. 1) They are crazy, don't know how to run a restaurant, and probably won't be in business long. And now for my ode to their chicken biscuit. People, it is De. Lish. Us. Crunchy on the outside, steamy and perfectly cooked chicken on the inside. The biscuits are buttery, crumbly and fresh. You'll think your mama was in there rolling out homemade biscuits, and serving them up with love. Second only to the pleasure of eating their food is the few minutes you get to stand inside the little building and watch them make it. These folks run like a well-oiled machine--somebody's rolling out the biscuits, putting in & taking out batches from the oven, somebody else is flouring the chicken (yes, it's fresh actual chicken, not frozen patties), somebody else is manning the grill, and someone's got the register. It takes practice and efficiency to fit that many people in a kitchen that small, and have it work. But it does. They have about 8 people in a teeny tiny kitchen, and then let 2-3 customers in at a time to order. It is a sight to behold. So get your biscuit down there, and order up some love, people. read more

As men and women, who are willing to get rear ended for a biscuit, patiently await their turn for biscuit paradise. Everything is from scratch. Real eggs, real biscuits, real fried chicken. Once you've had it like this, it's hard to do tiny hard biscuits from anywhere else. If you've never been, the chicken biscuit won't let you down. Their Bacon Egg Cheese is solid too. I also enjoy just getting plain biscuits and rushing home to slather them in butter and jam. These biscuits don't do well when they aren't hot, so if you must eat them while driving, so be it. I had my first Sunrise Biscuit this morning. Apparently if you go at 7:45am on a Friday, there is no line! It was tasty and buttery and oh-so-satisfying. I got the country ham, egg, and cheese biscuit. I added a hash brown (McDonald's style hash brown patty) to give it extra crunch. I would've liked some ketchup though. My friend got the fried chicken biscuit, with a slice of tomato. The chicken was PERFECT -- crunchy, moist, fresh. I think I'll get that next time. We also ordered a cinnamon roll. Not that we could eat more than 1 bite each, of course. It was warm and a little crispy on the outside, but so gooey and soft on the inside. Mmmmmmmm... Went here after taking a long arse trip from New York, about a 10 hour bus ride. My friends who picked me up insisted on eating at Sunrise Biscuit Kitchen. I was a disappointed when I found out that it was a drive through. I'm a huge fan of dining in and eating at the table. Also, I made the assumption that because it was drive through, it wouldn't be good. Wrong. Oh so very wrong. I ordered the pork chop sandwich, which was accidentally eaten by my friend who thought it was her chicken sandwich (who in their right mind confuses piggies with chickens? BLARGH). Anyway, the chicken sandwich that I ended up eating was PHENOMENAL. The buttery biscuit was amazing! I normally really dislike biscuits because they can get really dry and tasteless like chalk. But these were soft and gooey, with just the right amount of seasoning (and probably too much butter). The chicken meat itself was perfect. Juicy and soft, it tasted like a water balloon of oil and batter (in the good kind of way?). It was really oily, but honestly, I like my foods down and dirty, so I loved it.
