My go-to breakfast establishment in Chapel Hill. They have the BEST chicken biscuits with the most sweetest and friendliest staff. Every time I go with my dog, they always give him a piece of biscuit too. The reality of Sunrise Biscuit Kitchen is that it's partly for the food and partly for the experience of eating at a Chapel Hill standard. This place is often "packed" (meaning, a line of cars into the road - as they are mostly drive-through with limited walk-up). People come here because it's a quality biscuit with quality filling. Sure, you can go to a place with much better coffee (like, anywhere at all - seriously, coffee is so bad, just don't get it) or that may serve donuts - but the biscuits are still beyond compare. A good biscuit is fluffy, but not too fluffy. Not over-cooked, nor under-cooked. It has the right amount of butter and salt, but doesn't detract from the myriad of things you may want in the biscuit: cheese, sausage, egg, ham, chicken, etc. If you don't like it, that's fine - you may simply not be a fan of this style of cooking. Don't feel bad if you can't tell the difference from a fast-food chain biscuit, everyone has their flaws and your family still loves you. Probably. Short version: Go there, get a good biscuit. After reading all of the reviews on this place and driving by every weekend to see lines down Franklin street, I was really excited to give SBK a try. I drove up and was out of there in about 5 minutes - the wait was nonexistant that early on a Sunday morning (Great tip - its an easy drive through before 9:30am). I got the coffee as well - which was pretty good! I ordered the chicken biscuit, and was immediately impressed by its size and look. It looks like the golden crumbly biscuit of my dreams, and the chicken was fried and golden. Upon eating it however, I was kind of underwhelmed at the taste and texture of the package. The biscuit was oddly crispy up top - when I eat a biscuit, I expect it to be a bit softer. The chicken was actually kind of stringy and tough. It all had a great taste to it, and it was definitely exhibited when I chewed on pieces that really resembled fried chicken jerky. Holy smokes. Just got off the airplane, picked up our car, and decided we needed food. Now. The wife's headache was getting worse, our stomachs were growling... Yelp, save us! Sunrise Biscuit Kitchen... Literally a drive through with no room to eat inside and only space for three customers to place an order... but don't worry, you won't wait long. Since this was the first of a few places we were headed, figured we should go easy and just get one biscuit with friend chicken. Good lord... it was delicious. The BEST biscuit I've ever had in my life. (I've made and eaten a lot of biscuits... did that sound wrong?) With fried chicken that was crisp but ridiculously tender... it just doesn't get any better than this...The biscuit was slightly larger than my hand, and served as a perfect size appetizer... or if you order one of your own, would suffice as a medium meal. Oh God I had a free period in high school just so I could drive to this place without the line snaking down Franklin. These things make hubcaps look like pennies they are so big. For me (and I know this is sacrilegious) there is just too much butter on the butter biscuit. I used to get another plain one just to sop up the extra butter from the first one. Now, the bacon, egg and cheese or the chicken biscuit is really the direction people should head in. Even the cinnamon buns are superb and I don't even like sweets that much! When you go to North Carolina you know you'll be eating biscuits at some point at this is exactly the place you think of, it's a simple red hut with American flag and sign to adorn the outside. Thank you goes out to UNC local Carl Yiu for showing me this gem. The secret is definitely out, we waited 30 minutes in the drive through line that extended 200 yards up the street. Chicken and cheddar biscuit - 5/5 I feel like this is a must have on the menu. Flaky buttery biscuit is complemented by the crunch of the fried chicken. Add in the flavor of the sharp cheddar and you're in southern food heaven. Hot Dog fully loaded - 5/5 The sausage is covered with a flavorful chili and sweet slaw. Unlike northern slaws that at least to me have some sort of unappealing white sauce I find the sweetness of these delightful. Prices: Low, very reasonable. The biscuit was only $4 and the hot dog $2. The first few times that I drove down Franklin Street towards Chapel Hill on a Saturday morning, I thought that there was a wreck in the right-hand lane. False--it was just the line to Sunrise Biscuit Kitchen. When I eventually figured out that it was the line to a drive-through biscuit place, I had to go. SBK produces a quality biscuit--big, somehow fluffy and heavy at the same time. Don't ask me how they do it--maybe it's the real eggs and real flour? I don't know the last time I had a not pre-mixed biscuit (I do not buy the Hardee's or McDonald's "made from scratch" nonsense). I personally find them a bit greasy...especially with the toppings (the eggs are really greasy). I think that's par for the course here, however, and when the craving for a biscuit strikes, this is definitely a solid bet and an awesome NC institution. read more

my first visit here. from what i've read, i agree with what's been said in the positive reviews. this is a no-frills drive-thru. we went on a thursday morning, so there was no line. the service was as expected. there is some parking available so you can enjoy it while it's still very hot, but most of the cars went on their way after coming through. i had the classic chicken biscuit. this is big enough even for a hungry guy. i think it's chicken breast meat (mine was all white). crunchy-on-the-outside, slightly-seasoned, tender and quite moist on the inside. better yet, the biscuit -- this is a rolled biscuit that embodies what i dream of as an ideal biscuit -- not too dense, not too airy, slightly crumbly but with enough bite, infused with a butter flavory that complements but doesn't overwhelm the chicken. bravo!!! the hash brown is like a mcdonald's hash brown, but denser and greasier. i'm going to skip it next time b/c it wasn't very distinctive, and the chicken biscuit was large. finally, this might be sacrilegious, but we had the coffee instead of sweet tea. it was actually quite tasty even drunk black (although they gave us about 10 packets of sugar), only complaint is that my sister's cup was lukewarm while mine was hot. Fattie Alert, Fattie Alert! The BF and I spontaneously finally tried out this place. As soon as it was in sight, we saw that characteristic long line of cars waiting that so many have mentioned here. It felt like Disneyland waiting to get to the front of the line. Combined, our fattie order included: Bacon, Egg, & Cheese biscuit; Fried Chicken Biscuit with cheese, lettuce, tomato, and grilled onion; hashbrowns; grits; coleslaw; and a cinnamon roll. My bacon/egg/cheese biscuit was exactly what I was craving, and the hashbrown was perfect (think McDonald's hashbrown craving getting fulfilled for slightly better quality, but the same price), and the cinnamon roll was a nice touch of sweet, salty (while not being overwhelming). The colesaw was ok (I'm not a big colesaw person though), and the grits were MEH. Wish I had gotten a 2nd serving of hashbrown instead of the grits. I love how laidback, casual this place is. Nothing fancy smancy about it, but delicious and hits that spot for fattie food!! And our whole order was about $15. For all that food, it was a great price. Get here and get fattened. read more

Now that I've married a North Carolinian and make trips into the Tarheel State more often, I've been introduced to a lot of new cuisine. For instance, my introduction to Bojangles has been fantastic, as has the introduction to Biscuitville. I now see the light and recognize how great the chicken biscuit can be. I attended a wedding in Chapel Hill, and between our hotel and the planned festivities on Franklin St., I drove by this hovel that always had a huge line of cars on it. In my experience, it's the places that look bad on first impression that end up being the best. So I knew that over that weekend, I would sneak a trip there at least once. After finally getting the chance, I swung by, and ordered both a chicken biscuit and biscuits and gravy (for educational and review purposes of course). The chicken biscuit was a disappointment. I found the chicken biscuit at Biscuitville to be far superior. The biscuit was very buttery and tasty, but the chicken was overcooked, overly greasy (which is hard to do in this category of food), and flavorless. I just was disappointed overall with it after hearing UNC alums blowhard about how great they were all weekend. The biscuits and gravy were only OK, the gravy was too salty and took away from the biscuits tastiness. If I lived in Chapel Hill, I'm sure I'd make more trips here, but as a short term visitor, after having it built up so much, it really was just a disappointment. My wife is from the Chapel Hill area, and I have been hearing about this place for almost as long as I've known her. On a recent trip down to UNC, I had the opportunity to finally indulge in some biscuitness. Hot damn! This is one of those things (like grits, perhaps?) that us northerners don't truly understand until we've had the real thing. The chicken biscuits are truly outstanding. It was hot and gooey and so flavorful. If it weren't for gout, my lack of a hedge fund and an airplane, I would fly down here every morning for breakfast. Given that these are such a big breakfast draw, I was surprised at how mediocre the bacon egg & cheese biscuit was. One random bacon slice and an egg plopped on top does not a cohesive sandwich make. I live right around the corner from Sunrise, and after driving by the enormous line for an entire semester, I finally had to see what the fuss was all about. The experience changed my life. I have never had a bad meal at Sunrise. I've had the bacon egg and cheese and sausage biscuits and the chicken salad sandwich. The biscuits are HUGE. They are firm on top and buttery and soft in the middle- the perfect texture. The egg is a real egg and thick and fluffy, not a perfect circle of egg substitute. The sausage patty is thick, juicy, and flavorful. The cheese is a thick slice of cheddar and when it melts in the middle over the sausage it is amazing. The hashbrowns are pure hot greasy crunchy goodness. I would go just for them. As a chicken salad addict, I give theirs a gold star. It's got a good mixture of celery and spices and isn't too heavy. The chicken isn't too chunky but it also isn't really finely ground like some places. It comes on white sandwich bread with lettuce but I get mine on a biscuit with cheese and tomato and it's delicious. Unless you like your tea super sweet, get something else to drink. It's very sugary. Go to Sunrise. The line may be long but when you pull up to the window and the lady calls you darlin' and tells you to have a good day, it will have been worth it. read more

I went here for the first time this morning at 7 am. We had a very large group and the women who took our orders were extremely friendly, even given the small traffic jam we were creating with our line of cars. Some of the orders were a bit complicated, but they took it all in stride. The biscuits are the fluffiest things I've ever eaten in my life. Clearly I wouldn't want to do this every day, especially as you can taste the butter they must beat in by the pound. Most people ordered chicken biscuits, but the fried part seemed a little over the top to me prior to trying a bite of the chicken, which was surprisingly moist and flavorful. I removed the breading and finished a piece that someone else had neglected. (I had ordered my plain biscuit with some tomato slices for freshness.) The sweet tea was prepared on par with Southern standards--meaning it was syrupy sweet and maybe a little hard to handle that early, but good nonetheless. No one bothered to order anything else, but I've heard that the cinnamon rolls are quite good here, too. Everything's quite cheap, plain biscuit = $0.89, chicken = $3.19, sweet tea = $1.40, and comes out very quickly. Overall, I will probably drop by here again if I'm feeling the need for some good down country indulgence. read more

This place is pretty much a Chapel Hill institution. It's been around forever, the kind of place that seems like it's been unaffected by the passage of time -- presumably whenever drive-thrus were invented. In fact, Sunrise Biscuit Kitchen has one of the only drive-thrus in Chapel Hill, since the town has prohibited them on newer restaurants for a long time. Anyway, there's some other stuff on the menu, but you come here for the biscuits, and possibly the sweet tea. The biscuits themselves are old-school and delicious. The chicken biscuits are a favorite, as are traditional varieties like bacon, egg and cheese (they use cheddar though, not American like most fast food breakfast biscuits). Don't be deterred by the long weekend lines - it usually goes pretty quick, and at least you get to sit in your car. Actually, you can park, go in and order if you don't feel like waiting, and that's even faster since not many people realize you can do it. They close each day at 2 pm so if you have a hankering, be sure you go before then. Surprisingly, they do now accept credit cards. As other reviewers have stated, if you get a big order, check it before you drive off as they sometimes mess stuff up on those. Still worth it. read more

Sure it's called biscuit kitchen, but have you had their cinnamon rolls? No, seriously - you HAVE to try their cinnamon rolls. For less than $2, one cinnamon roll is enough for to split between two people and just as good as the ones you can get down the street at Weathervane for $6 a roll. Do yourself a favor and pick up one or a dozen of these sugary treats. The biscuits are also great at Sunrise, light and fluffy and served pipping hot. Wasn't really impressed with the chicken biscuit - the breading was soft and the chicken lacked flavor. The other fillings are good - tried their sausage and egg. Their location is great since they offer a drive thru and they're super speedy. Inside it's just a small walk up counter wedged in between the kitchen and supply area - not much to look at, but you'll be in and out in a minute as they're really quick. I've passed this place a million times and was told to try it two million times, but never had the chance because of its brunch hours. But I finally tried it and--even though I didn't order the all-time famous chicken biscuit (I don't know why now that I'm looking back on it)--it was delicious and completely worth the trek! I ordered the sausage/egg/cheese biscuit and here is what I have to say about that: The biscuit. Perfectly fluffy and buttery. I'm a huge fan of everything carbohydrate and it was top tier stuff. The sausage was not too too oily, but definitely enough to cure a hangover. The entire sandwich is pretty big and really filling, so I say it's completely worth the price. I love this place. My fiance and I are pretty much regulars. We hit up the drive-thru a few times a month. The lines can be long but move very quickly. My favorite items are the chicken biscuit and the country ham biscuit. Everything I've had is delicious. My only complaint is they tend to get the order wrong or leave items out all together. Whenever we've ordered for a large group biscuits have been missing. Recently I ordered a side of gravy and when I got home realized I'd been given grits instead. Bloody good Wish I could import this treat to my native United Kingdom. It is Ab-fab. Park up the street and enter through the side door to avoid the lines. The regular chicken biscuit is good too, and I like to wash either down with their sweet tea. Their hash browns are alright. Toss my hat into the ring of rave reviews. Sunrise Biscuit Kitchen has pretty close to the biggest, fluffiest, and best tasting biscuits in the area. I like that they can fill you up without breaking open the piggy bank. And the eggs taste real. (If they aren't, then I have to know where they find the artificial egg flavoring.) The country ham and the plain biscuits are probably my favorites. They're the real melt-in-your mouth kind. Not the healthiest, but who cares? I can't speak about anything else SBK serves, just the biscuits. I don't won't to ruin the taste with peripheral nonessentials. If I had to compare SBK to the competition. . . well, I'm not so sure Sunrise has any real competition in the immediate area. One more good thing: They really know how to keep the line of cars moving. The few times I've visited, the line is around the building and out in the street with cars waiting in line to turn in. First time here, with all the great reviews, I was hyped, and I was expecting some amazing southern fried chicken biscuit sandwich. I got the chicken biscuit (no egg, no cheese, as I was hoping to taste the purity of it), and although the fried chicken was breaded nicely, to me it is the biscuit (bread) makes the sandwich. The western steak was decent, just like a thick country fried steak patty. I would say this is a surefire place to go for a quality biscuit sandwich, but it was nothing mind-blowing, as a biscuit to me is hard to mess up on. And they are, after all, a biscuit kitchen. Oh, we got a hashbrown too, and I thought they gave me something from McDonald's. I was expecting something more homemade, but it's what you see in the photos. Btw, it's a drive-thru, with no seating whatsoever, and although it is supposedly always busy, at 11 am on a Saturday, we were only the 3rd car in line. And may I add, I ate it on an empty stomach and the grease made my stomach achy. (So I went over next door to Cafe Driadde to wash it down with a cup of coffee.) Amazing biscuits, seriously some of the best I've ever had besides Flying Biscuit in Atlanta. Got the chicken biscuit and an extra biscuit with jelly to go. Arrived right after they opened and there wasn't a line yet. The chicken on the chicken biscuit was extremely succulent and tasty, with the biscuit being fluffy but enough weight to it that it held together without crumbling under the massive chicken breast. I came back the next day a bit later in the morning and got the same thing, and while it was great, the chicken was a bit less juicy this time. I'd recommend getting there close to 6:30am to get the full experience. They do take credit and debit cards and service is fast. The only recommendation I'd have would be to stock squeezable jelly packets instead of the little tubs for ease of use on the go. read more

This place can be hit or miss. 1 out of 10 times, it will be the best breakfast ever, and most of the time it is at least okay, but occasionally you'll get something that didn't seem to be made quite up to spec that day. But this place can get ridiculously busy sometimes, cars lined up out into the street, especially on a Sunday morning. So obviously, they must be doing something right. I recently attended a wedding in the Chapel Hill area, and based on Yelp reviews, put Sunrise Biscuit Kitchen firmly on my to-do list. This was my last stop on my way out of town, and I had been looking forward to eating a chicken biscuit all weekend. Rarely does a food experience live up to high expectations, but this was one of the few that absolutely did. The biscuit was lovely...it was tender, flaky, and absolutely delicious. The fried chicken breast that accompanied it was tender, well seasoned and had a wonderful fried crust that was perfect. Biting into this was absolutely heavenly, and I enjoyed every bite! I am not a chicken and biscuit expert, but I can say that this was delicious. Thankfully there is nothing like this near me, as I would be tempted to eat here at least once a week. What happened??? Why are there so many amazing reviews? Went to try an egg and cheese today. Even before my card was swiped the biscuit came out. Biscuit wasn't flaky, the egg was cold, cheese was not melted (could see little drops of condensation on it), and the whole thing tasted like it was just a leftover. Sunrise is a little more expensive than most drive-thru breakfasts. Biscuit-wise, I would rate Sunrise slightly higher than Biscuitville. Slightly. The hash browns were also perfect, although a tiny bit thinner than most. I got a Diet Coke with mine and when I got to the end of the drink, it tasted like a giant pile of Splenda. For this biscuit you will sit in your car, in a line of other cars that stretches down the street, and you won't regret it. The line does move fast, and there's really no way around it, because only three customers can fit in the little building at once--so your alternative is to wait in a line in the parking lot instead. The line for biscuits at Sunrise is the great equalizer. I had a cheese biscuit and a hash brown, and sweet tea. My cheese biscuit was, dare I say it, a little too cheesy. It came with two slices of cheese, but I think next time I'll ask for just one. The cheese tasted like actual cheddar cheese, not some pathetic American slice in a plastic wrapper. Sunrise values their biscuits too much to put that sort of thing on them. The hash brown was very oily, though. Even after soaking up several napkins' worth of grease, there was still a lot of oil left, and that made me sort of regret getting it. But I'll definitely come back for the biscuits and the tea, and there's even a nice looking veggie sandwich on the lunch menu. read more
