While it was tasty, I did feel like it was missing something, and personally didn't find it to be worth the wait. Cool and little neighborhood deli that is very popular. I don't know how it is during the week, but if you go on the weekend either go early or go late or you're standing in line for a long time. They've got their service down pat so it goes pretty quickly once you're inside. Friendly service. Come in and give your order and they will call your name when it's ready and your sandwich comes wrapped in white butcher paper and they'll ask if you want a bag and napkins. They have packages of napkins and utensils, available near the door, and also complementary water on the inside while you're in line there. All the orders are to go, but they do have a couple picnic tables just outside. I ordered two sandwiches, one hot and one cold. The cold one for tomorrow. Both of them had an asterisk beside them saying they were spicy, imagine that. I got a full size chopped cheese which comes in a hoagie roll. It was delicious and nicely spicy. Perfect for lunch and dinner. The cold sandwich I got was the roast turkey. It was very tasty too, I'm almost tempted to say I liked it better. I've been to Ideals twice now and I think I've waited in line a total of 2.5 hours in line between the two visits. While the wait in line can be a little ridiculous, the sandwiches are pretty darn good. My favorite so far have been the eggplant and ricotta, and Thanksgiving special sandwich. The sandwiches are good portion sizes and pretty affordable. They usually have a rotating sandwich each week, so they really know how to lure you into coming back!! The place is TINY, albeit with a few picnic tables out front, and has a handful of gourmet-style grocery options (e.g., pastas and sauces, alcohol). You then order at a counter and they call you when it's ready. To be clear, YOU CANNOT EAT INSIDE-- you have to leave as there is no indoor seating. I ordered the chicken cutlet, rabe, and cheese on focaccia, and my dining partner had the fried eggplant. The timing was good-- they ran out of focaccia RIGHT after our order. The food was fixed quickly-- ready in maybe 5 minutes or so. We took it outside and sat at the picnic table. My sandwich was GREAT-- the chicken was outstanding, as was the garlic mayonnaise. I actually think they put a little bit too much of the broccoli rabe-- it did overpower a little bit. If you are sensitive to bitter, you may want to pull a little out of the sandwich, but it is nice having "healthiness" in there. Arrived on a Sunday around 1 pm and the line was already out the door and going past the store (note they are currently only open Thursday-Monday 12-3 pm). There is some street parking, as well as a lot behind the store. No indoor seating, only 2 picnic tables outside so I would anticipate having to takeaway to eat elsewhere. Alternatively, there are a couple of public benches across the street - since the weather was nice and the picnic tables were full, we ended up sitting on these benches instead. The line was quite long, but moved relatively quickly - the staff were efficient at taking our orders and the food came out fast. Overall, the food was well worth the wait. The bread was fresh and chewy and the perfect foundation needed for a proper sandwich. We tried Uncle Primo's Chicken Cutlet, which had prosciutto, mozzarella, herb mayonnaise, and arugula salad. The chicken cutlet was delicious - tender and juicy with a well-seasoned breaded crust. The arugula salad added an acidic/bright flavor and the herb mayonnaise was buttery and melded all of the flavors together. We also tried the Harlem Chopped Cheese which was a combination of ground beef, onions, sharp provolone and cherry peppers. We ate right away after getting our sandwiches but I can imagine if you waited, this sandwich might be prone to getting soggy. It was like a version of a philly cheesesteak. This sandwich was heavier on the saltiness and greasiness but still very good. We did the long line wait over the weekend to try this spot (had been once before as a vegetarian too, but wanted to try the full menu this time!). We got the Uncle Primo's and the Italiano. Both sandwiches were good but did not wow me (especially on par with the level of hype). The hoagie bread was on the chewy side, so it didn't allow the textures of the other ingredients to come through. Italiano was slightly better-executed. The provolone cheese they use here is pretty flavorful (full disclosure I am not the biggest provolone fan), so it takes a balance of other strong flavors to not have that stand out - the Italiano did a good job of having enough acidity and brightness from the peppers and vinaigrette, plus the giardiniera was nice. The lettuce was perfect and added a critical crispy/crunchy freshness. Although good, this sandwich is similar to many other Italian subs you could find anywhere. The Primos was not served as hot and crispy as would have been ideal - the cutlets were unremarkable, and the texture was not discernable between the chewy bread. The arugula salad was dressed in balsamic, but still a bit more acidity and spice could have elevated the balance and flavorfulness of the sandwich. The herb mayo was a good addition. We also got some drinks - they had a tea with popping boba which was fun, and they have other great things in their market inside. It is a fun experience to go wait in line with a friend group, and it is nice to explore the surroundings in East Durham, so I would definitely still try it, and I will be back to try other items on the menu! read more

I've been a regular customer at this restaurant for quite some time and have always been willing to wait in long lines because the food is consistently good. However, my recent experience was extremely disappointing and concerning. An order was placed with a clear request to exclude a specific ingredient. Despite this, the item was prepared with that ingredient, and instead of remaking it properly, it was simply removed and served anyway. When my parents noticed and asked for it to be remade correctly for safety reasons, they were met with resistance and made to feel uncomfortable for advocating for their own well-being. Although the order was eventually remade, they were asked to wait until everyone else had been served, which felt unnecessary and dismissive. Food quality is important, but food safety and respectful customer service should never be compromised. This experience has left me very disappointed in a place I've supported for so long, and it definitely makes me reconsider returning. read more
