When we drove up my first thought was-oh no this looks like a flop! We walked in and saw almost all seating was full. We were greeted immediately by the staff. This looks like a house turned into a cafe. Very small but cute and clean. The bar was a beautiful wood homemade wood piece. The tables were also handcrafted out of wood. The cooks are right behind the bar cooking a way. The staff are so friendly and attentive. I definitely must of looked nosey... I watched all of the plates of food come out. I thought Texas was the only place everything was big. There is a lot of food on the plates. You will not leave hungry. I had a bowl with potatoes, onions peppers, bacon and 2 over easy eggs. My son had an all meat omelette with hash browns. They were both delicious. This is a must stop for breakfast or brunch. read more

Service was great even on a Saturday morning! It was delightful and attentive. They got us the food quickly. The food was traditional to a small dinner. The ambiance reminds me of an old fashion up north mom and pop restaurant. (Love the old signs) We had breakfast and the eggs we cooked perfect and so was the rye toast! The bacon had excellent flavor (ask for it to be cooked the way you want it) mine was a little more well done than I like, but I didn't ask for it a certain way (that's on me). Portions are good and the price is VERY VERY reasonable. This is great place for small groups of people (2-6). They have an old fashioned counter by the grill for individuals to eat. We will be back! A small restaurant on the north side of Battle Creek. Just 5 or 6 tables. Friendly staff. We had breakfast and were it disappointed. Decent portions that were perfectly cooked. Also good coffee. Sitting by the door can get a little cold since the place is small, but don't let this stop you from visiting. We will definitely be coming back and trying more items. This is not a 'fine dining' restaurant...but it is still excellent! The burgers are SO good that I get them for breakfast when I go there. The Rita burger and the Mushroom & Swiss are both mouth-watering. The breakfasts that buddies get when I eat with them take up the entire plate! Sunrise does not skimp on portions! Kristina keeps the coffee cups full with a smile each time I am there. Small, clean establishment with generous portions and a great staff. We actually found out about this place from a coupon in a local chamber of commerce type brochure, so it was an even better deal. Small seating area inside but no waiting on a Sunday morning. They appear to do takeout orders too. I got a special that was a half order of biscuits and gravy, 2 eggs, and hash browns with coffee for $8.49. My guy got the eggs, steak, potatoes, and toast meal- a decent size NY strip cooked to order, we were informed it was from a local meat market. Coffee came in mugs that I noticed were mismatched among the restaurant, lends to the homey vibe. We were told this place has been around some 64 years, with the woman serving us there 18. When previous reviews describe the restaurant as small, what they are not mentioning is that the dining area has four booths, a table for 6, and a table for 8. Plus 2 metal support columns inconveniently in the way of the big tables. The kitchen area follows the east side of the building, so behind the cash register you can see the flat top, the food prep area, storage for bread, and just part of the washing up area. A counter with a half dozen stools separates the kitchen from the diners. A doorway leads to a pair of bathrooms at the north of the building. Overall, it is a pretty congested space. A sign on the corner of North and Coolidge points the way. There's one handicap parking space among the scant few spaces. The restaurant seems to count as customers a mixture of locals as well as employees from the hospital (about a mile south of the restaurant). My girl ordered the Sunrise Sampler, which included a less than a half order of biscuit and gravy, as well as hash browns, one egg, and two sausage links. I ordered a larger portion of French Toast. As usual, we tasted each other's breakfasts. I wished I had ordered what my girl had. The French Toast was made with that sort of wishy washy Texas Toast that is tasteless and is unworthy of feeding to starving sparrows. The Sunrise Sampler, on the other hand, was a bevy of interesting flavors. The gravy was peppery and substantial, the potato cakes (like deep fried dollar sized rounds not unlike flattened tater tots) were spicy and crunchy, and the sausage was a brand we had never run into before but we both liked a lot. Overall, we were not nearly as charmed by this restaurant as previous reviewers. The physical plant is dated and cluttered. The French Toast was forgettable. The coffee was very good, but my cup was refilled only once, and I hate to have to ask when refilling an empty coffee cup should be automatic. And after our food was delivered the server never returned to our table. The restaurant does not give you a paper bill to take up to the register; the server figures it all out when you get up to pay. Be watchful. Our bill came up to $23 the first time. "What?" my girl replied. "I don't think so." It turns out the server never cleared the register so the cost of the previous diner's meal had been inadvertently added. My girl and I agreed we had never seen that one before. And because we pay attention to hygiene, we watch employees that do multiple sets of tasks. The younger of the two women did the majority of the cooking, and we saw her clean off dishes in the washing up area, then grab a couple paper towels from the dispenser and wipe her hands, and return back to the flat top. She didn't wash her hands with soap or use a liquid disinfectant, nor did she wear plastic gloves. read more

Lake's Sunrise Cafe is a hidden little gem of a restaurant. You can't go wrong with any of the breakfast options and the burgers are quite possibly the best in town.
