I had traveled to Battle Creek from Detroit and was beat down driving 94 West. After looking for something to eat, we decided on Kitchen Proper. Wow! This place is great. I am from Virginia and love sweet tea and know Michigan doesn't have sweet tea BUT our server Trish brought me tea and simple syrup--amazing. Trish is very knowledgeable about the menu and where the ingredients are sourced from. With so much great food, I wish I had a couple of extra stomachs. This place is great. I and my team were on work trip in Battle Creek and our team came for dinner here. We got seated in Patio on backside which was quite pleasant. We ordered drinks, appetizers and entrees. Our server was quite fast and she got our order out fairly quick. The Gouda dip was amazingly delicious. I had chicken Marsala which was also delicious. Nicely crafted menu and daily specials, well qualified staff and a limited number of tables which makes the quality and service better overall for guests. I recommend reservations especially if you have a larger group. There are a few two-seat high tables by he kitchen which is good for better/more frequent eye contact if you need a server's attention. Restrooms are clean/spacious. Parking on city street parking in the back or across the street is convenient. The outdoor area can get cold and out of sight for servers but is a nice option on warm days. Accessibility to the indoors can be a little challenging for folks with different abilities but the staff helps if need be. read more

I have to say, I did not except to find an upscale restaurant with a seasonal menu in Battle Creek. Kitchen Proper was an excellent surprise to my trip!! We had a table of 4, and we ordered 2 apps, entrees and 3 desserts. Everything was amazing, no disappointments at all. The whole team left with big smiles. The hubby took me to this restaurant as a suprise date night. We typically don't visit Battle Creek, but this was the dinner spot for a suprise concert he was taking me to. Upon our arrival, the staff was very nice and polite. We had late reservations so we were seated in the walkway. The seating wasn't comfortable and the breezeway was very cold. Also we were seated next to the bar and could hear the bartender who was clearly having some kind of mental health crisis, which kept us from ordering any drinks. This was our first experience here and these two reasons are the reason for a 4 star review. Our waistress apologized for the bartenders inappropriate outbursts and was very attentive to us. The food and service are what makes this place great. We had the tomato soup, crab cakes, chopped salad, and a couple of entrees. The food was really good but it is very doubtful that we will return to this establishment. We were very ready to go as we were uncomfortable and took our entrees to go and had no dessert, which made me sad because that is my favorite part of going out. The service was excellent! I wish I could remember our waitress name, but she was good! She knew the menu welll and was on top of everything. The chef/owner even walked through and checked on each table. The menu was so interesting and original. It was so hard to make a decision. We started with an appetizer of goat cheese. It was amazing. For dinner I had the Pork Cheek and Pierogies. It was so incredibly good! My friends had the Alfredo. Everyone was very happy with their meal. We even had desert. The pistachio cake was nice and light - it was perfect for someone like me who doesn't usually do a big heavy dessert. Warmly greeted despite my lack of reservation at 6pm, but there were plenty of tables and most remained open during my time here. Big specials board that appears to rotate on a regular basis because my waitress had some fun trying to remember each one. I had the smoked blue cheese to start and it was excellent. A lot of cheese for one person. I skipped almost all of the bread (I'm on a keto diet) but the cheese was delicious. Served in a cast iron skillet, the cheese was a little melty and a lot delicious with some caramelized bacon and a cherry compote. Yum! For main course, I chose the duck breast. Great date night spot. It's small and has cozy, romantic vibes.. so be prepared to sit close to other guests and overhear conversations. Otherwise, once the food is out (which is really fast!) you'll be so lost in the delicious flavors that come together you won't even bother listening. We also ordered the Caesar salad and that was so delicious and full of cheese and dressing but it didn't taste like too much. I think I'll order that next time with some protein. I absolutely LOVED Malia (what this location was before it re-branded as Kitchen Proper) & I think Kitchen Proper does a good job continuing the good food in Battle Creek. No more Malia mushroom though it seems. However, I feel like their prices have gone up. I ordered a salmon salad at lunch for $22. Seems a bit outrageous! I mean it was a pretty dang good salad (fresh seared salmon on a bed of mixed greens tossed with pickled onions, basil, blueberries, walnuts, feta & a side of maple apple cider vinaigrette). My favorite Malia salad ended up being close to $20 BUT that was self-inflicted as I added on ahi tuna AND the salad itself came with two eggs. I thought I was walking into just another Italian restaurant until the board outside with specials drew me in to an Italian experience...This was my first time here and I had one of the specials tonight which was the steak tenderloin appetizer with fresh mushrooms, sprouts and toast points. The tenderloin was almost like a tartare. I paired that with the KP wedge salad with braised pork belly. The wedge salad was somewhat traditional but the pork belly just melted in my mouth! So fantastic! I will absolutely be ordering that again and may just ask for the pork belly alone... They also served fresh bread with olive oil. I can't think of a better dine in experience than to pair this with a IPA or a glass of wine which is what I did. Compliments to the chef! Next on my list is the hand cut fettuccine Alfredo. Wanted to give this place a 5, and I still may when I visit again. BC really needs a place like this. Ambiance is nice. Menu is diverse and not overwhelming. Prices are on the high end for the location, but not unfair. The execution was where Kitchen Proper stumbled, a little. Everything was WAY over-dressed. They use some beautiful ingredients, but the flavors are buried with sauces and dressings. I had the chopped salad which, like I said, was a very nice arrangement of greens and heirloom vegetables. HAMMERED with sweet dressing. I'll ask for it on the side next tIme. Flatbread was very crisp around the edges, but a little soggy in the middle. If you're going to charge $13 for a flatbread it should be really good. The arugula on top was exciting to see as I love this green for its peppery flavor and crunchy texture on flatbreads. HAMMERED with balsamic. I will definitely be back. Massive potential here. First off, this is locally owned by a husband and wife team who were there that night cooking, serving and greeting customers. This is truly a gem of a restaurant in downtown Battle Creek. This was my first time visiting since the change from the prior restaurant. I was not disappointed. My girlfriends and I were there celebrating birthdays and from the moment I walked in the front door I was greeted by a hostess and seated immediately (we had reservations). I love the ambiance of the restaurant and I love that they have an open kitchen. The chalkboard menu on the walls with specials is also an added touch. I was blown away by our server Trish. She came to our table and immediately introduced herself, told us the specials for the night and took our drink orders. I was really impressed with how quickly & articulately she told us about the specials. I am vegan and they had more than enough vegan options for me to select from. I got the risotto topped with veggies and arugula which was AMAZING! The portions are quite large and the best part is that the food came out hot! In addition, the bread they offer before the meal is vegan friendly (with a side of olive oil). Lastly, for dessert as a vegan option they offered strawberry sorbet which also was delicious. Oh my delicious food and great company with friends from TRMI. To our health and welfare. The five of us order Wagu Beef steak, Red Snapper. Stuffed Ravioli and a great starter of appetizers. The flavors of the food were very good. So we were busy eating and drinking and did not stray towards business in any overly significant way.
