I am a first-timer and late to learning about the "Sunrise Caribbean Restaurant." The customer service was impeccable. The owner/staff make you feel welcome and a part of the Trinidad community. I ordered a chicken bowl and the jerk chicken was perfectly seasoned. I like my jerk chicken a bit more spicy, but I understand that the restaurant may want to cater to an American palate. The only thing was missing was the "Roti" and I asked... and the owner mentioned that he didn't have it today. I hope that the owner will start carrying the Roti by the my next visit :). A small but beautiful shop nicely designed and the food is amazing. This isn't a generic Caribbean joint transplants head to for bland beef patties and coco bread. The food is authentic and good. Obviously "Caribbean" is too broad. The owners are Trinidadian so the food is Trini. Had some slamming pholourie with sweet tamarind sauce, impeccably seasoned cabbage, macaroni pie (what Americans call baked macaroni), callaloo, jerk chicken and curry chicken. And they have vegan options that are just as tasty. My only critique is the lack fish options (just stewed tilapia at the time) and the wait for the food but that's because it's made there right in front of you. The prices are excellent and they don't skimp you with portions. It's a small space so don't expect to go with a large group and dine-in. But a great spot for an afternoon lunch date for two. I paid $14.00 for a jerk chicken dinner. What I got was less than 2 pieces of chicken and that was mostly bone with very little meat. The jerk was bland with no Caribbean spices. I usually go to the hole in the wall down the street in 5100 block of GA Ave. called move and groove. It is 100% better. You can taste the spices. Brightwood just feels brighter with Sunrise in the neighborhood. I used to think about their delicious fresh veggie sides and wonder when I would next be in Union Station. Because while I could eat every side in the hot bar that is available, how would it make me feel after I devoured a well-seasoned cornucopia of food? What to get? Vegan Mac n cheese. What else? Vegan jerk chicken- soy based. What else? A napkin within easy reach because you'll be drooling looking at the steaming hot options. Plus, though the food is made in advance, they keep it temperature not- making it taste awesome-r. There are also drink specials like sorrel and peanut punch, roti flatbread sandwiches and a few other unique items. I just want callaloo, pumpkin, rice and peas, plantains, and spinach- all vegan. I like that you can purchase an individual side, because even if you try to choose healthier, you can get a side for a friend... And maybe just sample it, just a bit. The restaurant has only 3 or 4 tables, and the food is served cafeteria-style, with coolers on the side full of drink and dessert options. After a quick glance over the menu, I settled on the jerk chicken with sides of mac & cheese and fried plantains ($11). The person who took our order was, as others have mentioned, on the sassy side, but a nice guy. Even though they were out of plantains, he told us if we waited a couple minutes, they could fry some up for us. The jerk chicken was slightly charred, slightly spiced, and had some heat - an alluring flavor combination. The fried plantains were so good! Totally worth the wait. My friends, who are vegan and vegetarian, ordered the vegan stir fry and curry chik'n with sides of fried plantains and collard greens and really enjoyed their dishes. I also grabbed a slice of cake, which came out to $3 or so. The cake tasted and looked very, very similar to the Costco red velvet cake, which costs $10 for the whole cake. (I do like Costco cakes though, so I enjoyed the slice, even after realizing it was not homemade.) The staff were friendly, and we left saying we'd definitely have to come back again some time. Sunrise Caribbean may be a trek up from DC city center, but it's worth the trip for vegans, vegetarians, and anyone looking for a well-priced, filling, soul-satisfying meal. read more

Wow. This was the worst meal I've had in a long time. Literally just got my uber eats order. I ordered goat bussupshut, I received three tough boney oxtails and flavorless potato and Chana curry. I'm glad Uber is refunding me for this meal. So I enter what I though was a lovely place and was ignored terribly but the young man servicing the customers. To be more detailed there was a woman finishing up her order. He asked me if I was "picking up" I said no and he told me one minute. I like this place. The food is decent, owner and staff are friendly enough. They've never been rude. My only complaint is that (like most Jamaican restaurants) the owner will sometimes stop making food hours before they close. I mean like 4 hours before they close. If she's tired or just doesn't feel like it, she will not make anything that isn't on the hot bar, despite it being on the menu. Even something as simple as a roti. When I opened the macaroni and cheese and saw the presentation, I immediately knew it was going to be trash. And it was. After pulling back the layer of cheese melted on top of the noodles, I found mixed vegetables in the mac n cheese. Two bites into this macaroni and I had to throw it out. There was no flavor. I ordered a large oxtail with callaloo and steam vegetables. The oxtails were very tender but lacked flavor. The callaloo was extremely over cooked and mushy and also lacked flavor. The steam vegetables were good. The reason why I'm giving them 1 star, despite the lack of flavor, is because of the cost. The menu stated the oxtails were $16 but I was charged $17. The lady directly behind me also ordered oxtail and the older lady stated they would be ready in 5 minutes. While I'm waiting for the Dread to figure out how to change the receipt paper the older lady said charge the other customer $13 for her wait. What?! I love the vegan jerk and this is out of the way for me so I don't get to have it aa often as I would. Yesterday I decided to venture into the city for it and when I asked for it the young lady (who has never served me before) was confused about which one it was and didn't ask . Well, food is either bland or lacks flavor to where I need plenty pepper in my dish . Wth. Then , on top of that, they barely want to make anything on the menu. "We dont make that today " "we don't have that", ok, who hasn't heard that going to any real West Indian spot haha...but I mean sh*t , why have a menu, if you not gonna make anything? That items that are actually good on their menu? They either "don't wanna make" (yes an employee has told me to my face that he did not want to make it, it would take time ---doesn't all food take careful time to prepare? I can wait) I came on the day he said snapper and also bussup could be prepared , I come there and that's what I was told. Maybe hire more cooks, to help? While placing my order, the guy actually told me "I don't wanna hear that." Because he could not understand the order. I was ordering five plates and each came with two sides.
