As a fairly new resident of the Greenbelt area, I was excited to finally try Jerk Pit after it was highly recommended by a chef I recently met. From the moment I arrived, I was impressed by the smoke pits out back--they let you know the food is made with care. The curry chicken was outstanding and easily some of the best I've had in the DMV. I personally prefer a bit more heat, but the flavor was rich and well-balanced. The coco bread was incredibly soft and fluffy, and it stayed fresh even hours later. Surprisingly, this spot is open on Sunday. We didn't expect service would be great (as it was Mother's Day) but it was worse than expected. The location itself was in the cut; you would drive right by it if you're not paying attention - as I did. The restaurant appears to be a house remodel into a restaurant and gave off the vibe that the food was going to be good - straight JA hole in the wall vibe. We sat in the back area and no server came. So we put our order into the kiosk sadly. I think if you give the order to the guy at the register the food may come quicker - at least that would be my hope. Without a person to talk to, I hopped back online to at least get the drinks we ordered. An hour later, I finally made it to the cashier and our food and drink was ready. I didn't like that the cashier was badmouthing other staff audibly. Keep your dirty laundry to yourself. Come to find out, you can order from the table and the food arrives without haste! Jerk chicken- a bit spicy and good. Calalloo tastes decent even though I suspect it was doctored from a can. Rice and pease need sauce/dressing because it Iowa's extremely dry. Brown stew chicken was sweeter than I've ever had but edible. Plantains good. Cabbage really crunchy, not bad taste but I would like it to be cooked a little longer. They were busy, but the same gentleman that answered the phone was able to handle all the multi-tasking quite smoothly. I'd consider this a hidden gem honestly, and its standalone location makes it feel like home! It's definitely more visible than it used to be thanks to the fence painted in rasta colors. If you don't know where it is, it's very easy to miss the turn -- but fortunately it's easy to make a U turn. The Jerk Pit used to be in the plaza with the McDonald's, Pandora's Cube, and other things... and believe it or not that entire plaza is gone now! Jerk Pit moved way before this occurred, but it was a symbol of nostalgia, and now it's gone. Anyways, Jerk Pit has a few normal parking spaces, and then the rest is gravel, but it's all up for grabs. There are two entrances -- well three actually. There's the front entrance, there's the entrance near their rather spacious outdoor seating area (it's great when the weather is nice, but the bugs can get wild), and if the upstairs is open, there's a second floor entrance. The front entrance has a table with a bunch of local upcoming events, and then you see the register and some high tables to eat at. Bathrooms are easy to locate and there's a separate room. Now, it wasn't until recently that I learned the upstairs was even open to the public -- it's a whole epic lounge space up there! There's a long bar, some TVs, and quite the lounge space. I didn't even discover it until I came for a weekly karaoke experience that started a few months ago. It took place up there -- though it has since moved to the private room downstairs. I'm a sucker for their jerk wings, they're quite good. And they have a happy hour now -- rum punch, margaritas, jerk wings, patties, and more are up for grabs, and the specials last from 5:00-8:00pm... nice! It's great to see they've been around for so long, and even better to see there are reasons to come still. If you're not ordering to-go and trying to hang out for happy hour or what not, sometimes they have someone take your order, sometimes they don't -- it's been inconsistent, but it's primarily revolved around karaoke. I work so hard and I needed to treat myself for my amazingness. I decided to order some jerk chicken, mac and cheese, and plantains from this spot. I ordered through DoorDash, so it was delivered right to my door. Delivery was smooth. My food was nicely packed. I loved that they put my Kola Champagne drink in a bag so it wouldn't crack or break. However, for those expecting a spicy beef patty, they might be disappointed as this didn't have a kick to it, as It was mild. Honestly when it's good it's GOOD!!! I refer this place to people often. When I see them at festivals I will always patronize. They are slow as molasses service wise. It always takes long, so order in advance. The jerk snapper or oxtail is what I typically order. I decided to walk around outside and saw the chicken on the grill - my 1st sign that the food was going to be amazing! I got nervous and turned too early but was able to hop back on to the main road and then make another quick turn. Once inside, it gave me a feeling of being back in Jamaica. The brown stew chicken was a "Take it or Leave it" situation. The rice and peas were drier than a sun beaten cactus. It was hard to consume it. I had to mix gravy from the brown stew chicken to moisten it. The cabbage was fairly good. Again, I've had better at other establishments. I was not fond of the Pineapple Ginger Drink as it was super duper strong to the point that after a sip is swallowed, there is a strong burst of ginger that burns afterwards. It's so strong that it burns your nose and throat. I love both pineapples and ginger but this combination (for me) was not working. The homemade ginger beer was good. Yesterday I went to the jerk pit because I love their Mac and cheese. I got two orders. When I got home I opened the containers and it was big clump of cheese not cooked. Once I got past that I took one bite and it did not taste what I was used to . Now it's been about 2 years since I've been back but I never thought it would change dramatically. I didn't bother calling to inform the business because I know they wouldn't refund the money so I just tossed it and decided I will not be back. First time trying this restaurant and it was worth the money spent. I had gotten the combs oxtail with jerk chicken and it was delicious. I also got a side of jerk sauce for the rice and when I said it was fire it was. The chicken was juicy and not dried like I thought it would be. The oxtail was juicy and had flavor. I ordered a small curry chicken with rice and peas (rice and red beans to Americans) and macaroni and cheese. The portion was good. I needed more flavor in everything. The macaroni and cheese was overcooked and needed some salt and pepper or something to spruce it up. But then again when the noodles are overcooked you can kiss it goodbye for me. I also tried a sorrel with rum drink that was bottled. I think it was homemade. I liked it. I've made a huge batch once myself and it tasted similar.
