This incompetent dentist has ruined my perfectly healthy teeth and thanks to him, I'm terrified of dentists forever. I've lost so much weight from not being able to eat/enjoy food and from all the stress this office has put me through. I have never encountered any business as unprofessional, unethical and deceitful as Sunrise Dental Group. The entire staff, from the dentist to the receptionist is dishonest and untrustworthy. Due to the limited space on Yelp, I can't thoroughly describe all the details of my experience here. However, I'm creating a blog to warn others about this dentist and his practice, so I will update this review with the link to my blog when it's done. Here's a summary of my experience: I came to this dentist for porcelain veneers to make my teeth whiter. I did not have any gum disease, tooth decay and eight of the teeth I was getting veneers for were healthy. It should've been an easy case for any experienced cosmetic dentist to do, but this incompetent dentist had turned the whole process into a nightmare. 1. He works in silence like he's mute. He never explained what he was doing. Never asked me if I was in any pain (I often had to yell out loud to let him know I was in pain). Here's the worse part: Every single time he injected anesthesia, he would insert the needle so far that he ended up injecting the Novocaine into my nose. I mentioned this to him during the procedure once and his response was, "Yea." One time, so much Novocaine was injected into my nose that it ran from my nose down to my throat and made me cough while my mouth was being held wide open. I felt like I was going to choke! 2. He cuts corners to cut costs, save time and to make things easier for him (but not necessarily good for the patient). A wax up is necessary to determine exactly how much to grind off the natural teeth when doing veneers. He didn't do this step. He blindly grind off my teeth, estimating the depth of each tooth without having a clear vision of what the final veneer product look like. As a result, he grind off too much of my natural teeth, causing my 8 healthy teeth to be fragile and sensitive. 3. After this dentist cemented my veneers, one fell off a week later. The margins also looked horrible with cement stuck on the edges and gaps. If done correctly, there shouldn't be any black triangles or cement in between your teeth or margins. 4. I started to have discomfort in my front teeth. I couldn't bite down fully to chew. I told him of the discomfort twice in the office and went home with the same discomfort. Then the veneer in my front tooth started looking darker than the rest. At this point, I decided to cancel the treatment with this dentist and asked for my refund. Then things started to get interesting... -He refused to acknowledge his mistakes or that anything was wrong with the veneer, even though one fell out after only a week. -I got second opinions, gave Amy (his assistant) contact information of the other dentist I got second opinion from. This dentist never called, then later claimed I did not provide proof. -He lied to my face, he lied to me on the phone, and he even lied in my medical records. When you lie, not only do you lose your credibility as a "doctor" but also as a man. It's pretty pathetic. I have never met a professional provider who would lie in patient's medical records. When I confronted him, his response was, "A lot of things happened, I can't write a book." While I didn't expect him to write a book, what's being recorded in permanent medical records must be accurate and objective. Honesty and integrity are the foundation of quality patient care. This dentist and his office have none. Here are my advice to anyone who has to get work done at this office: 1. Always bring a friend or a family member to witness what's being said and done. If something goes wrong, you won't have to be alone fighting against an entire staff of dishonest individuals. 2. Ask for a copy of your medical records. You have the right to see them and verify all information. 3. Get a second opinion. Don't believe everything this dentist says. When he doesn't want to do something or when he wants you to do something- he will lie about certain things to scare you so you would agree to what he says. 4. He advertises himself as a cosmetic dentist, but BE CAUTIOUS here. After things went wrong I found out that every dentist can claim to be a "cosmetic dentist" after taking a few training courses. Be cautious if you decide to go here. I went here for a consultation while a friend of mine went for the consultation and a routine cleaning. I found this place to be a little dubious, dishonest, and lacking in the skills and knowledge to provide proper treatment and care to a wide variety of patients. I typically give people the benefit of the doubt but the following events reveal the true intentions of this establishment; chasing the all mighty dollar at any cost. - For my orthodontic consultation I was told that I was: o Too old (37). At my age the jaw bones are very hard making it difficult for my teeth to move and then to stay in place. o I was also told I would need gum grafting and would need to see an oral surgeon. o I was also told my lower jaw bone was too long and I would need surgery to shorten it. - My conclusion: o After a second opinion from another orthodontist I was told: o I'm not too old, no need for gum grafting, and don't need jaw surgery. o IMO, and I'm just rationalizing here, Sunrise Dental believed my case was too difficult for them to take on but instead of telling me straight up they chose to devise an elaborate excuse. - My friend's orthodontic consultation and cleaning went as follows: o She too was told that she was too old (30). o During the cleaning she was told she had several cavities (even though she has not had cavities in over 10+ years) o No scaling or flossing was performed during the cleaning - Our conclusion: o The following week my friend went to her usual dentist to address the cavities only to be told she did NOT have cavities. o Her dentist also told her that the cleaning job was not performed well o The second opinion she received from a different orthodontist also debunked the excuse for being too old. - A couple days later my friend requested a copy of the x-rays they took of her teeth be mailed out to her. A couple days after my friend requested her x-rays, I called to request mine so that I can take them to the next orthodontist for the second opinion, only to be told that my x-rays were mailed out to my friend's address. This is a violation of the Federal HIPAA laws! Patients are federally protected to keep health information private between you and the health care provider. The health care provider must have a written and signed consent form to release any information to someone else. o The carelessness and the willingness to cut corners is definitely not a place I would want to take my business and for sure would not leave my care in their hands. read more

He extracted 4 of my wisdom tooth at once! Smooth, quick, and professional. I did not feel any pain during and after my surgery. Strongly recommend Dr. Ly if you are planning to have tooth extracted! My visit to Sunrise Dental was very gratifying and my final opinion of the dentistry was nothing but positive. On the first note, I found the waiting room to be neat and organized; clean and emitting a welcoming aura. The front desk ladies were very kind, and the wait for my appointment was not long at all. The interior of the office was hygienic as well; something I found very respectable. Secondly, Dr. Ly and his coworkers were very positive and uplifting, making polite small talk and such. As for their operations, I have left numerous times with amazing results. For example, I recently had my braces placed, and I have received results as predicted by Dr. Ly: a short term of pressure and then the steady progress of teeth rearrangement. Being a customary client for approximately 10 years, I can confirm that their work is completely certified and trustworthy. The doctors will be honest with you and do their best to make your teeth as perfect as possible. They have with my family and me, which is such a significant aspect. I came to Sunrise Dental on a recommendation from a relative and have continued to go back even though it's an hour away from where I live. Fair or not, I'm generally suspicious that dentists are out to take advantage, maybe because I think of them as "teeth specialists" incentivized rake it in rather than "doctors of teeth and gums" fighting for your oral well being. So it makes a big difference when I find a dentist that I trust. Dr. Nguyen is that dentist. He definitely belongs to the "doctor" variety, someone who's genuinely curious and knowledgeable about teeth and gums, wants you to understand what the problems are (he'll spend the time walking you through your x-rays and has helpful animated videos on tooth/gum decay), and is transparent about your options for treatment. I've had 2 cavities and one root canal done at Sunrise. The jobs were beautifully done and less expensive than I've paid or would have paid elsewhere. June 16, 2015. at around 9:40 AM. Pretty fail of an establishment I would say. I go in with my mum and two sisters and ask the lady in the front desk about braces for my sister. She seems to not be fluent in English, which is completely fine. The problem is the absurdity of the whole experience talking with her. She asks me something along the lines of signing in or whatever and I say I don't have an appointment. I say I'm just here to inquire about the price of braces for my sister. She doesn't really understand and gives me a questioning look. So, I explain again that I'm asking about the price of braces. She asks what insurance I have. I tell her and when she abruptly apologizes and says they don't accept it, I say it doesn't matter, paying in cash is fine. So she says she will go and check and tell me. So she plays with her phone, then goes inside a bit, comes back out, plays with her phone again and asks me "how many teeth". ...Uh, excuse me? "HOW MANY TEETH??" What do you mean how many teeth. Isn't there obviously only three choices. There is no how many teeth involved in this. Just top, bottom, or both. So I say top and bottom. And she replies with a sorry, we don't do that here, we don't do braces...sorry. So, we say thank you and leave. What kind of orthodontist place is this? Your sign outside says braces. Great staff. Great service. Great dentist! I've never been a fan of going to the dentist since the dentist I saw growing up was horrible. I dreaded getting any type of dental procedures done, but Dr. Lee changed that. I've been going to see Dr. Lee and his awesome staff for over 5 years now (braces for 2 years) and I have had nothing but positive experiences during every visit. I'm always greeted when I come in and my wait time is never long. The dental assistants do a great job suctioning and assisting, always making sure that I don't choke on all that water from the drill. (You all know what I'm talking about) The office is extremely clean, which is always a must. Their scheduling system is extremely flexible. They're open until 6pm on the weekdays (closed Wednesdays), but are open on Saturday until 3pm (for those of you who work longgg hours during the week). For my braces, Dr. Lee laid out all of my options during my consultation and gave me the pros and cons of every single one. He made sure that I was okay with all the steps taken to a perfect smile and will cater to my needs and wants, which is great! He listens and will tell you what your best treatment option is for you and not just in general. Just a couple more months and bye bye braces! Only go here for general dentistry. DO NOT go here for orthodontics, dental implants, etc... I had to learn the hard way. First of all, I got braces from Dr. Lee and when they were taken off, he made NO check up appointments as most other real orthodontists would do for their patients post-braces. Then I was supposed to get a dental implant for an impacted tooth but during the surgery, his instruments stopped working and he spent about 20 minutes trying to fix them! So I was sent home and rescheduled. After that incident, I felt like I needed a second opinion. I went to another implant specialist and told them how Dr. Lee was supposed to place the implant. The other dentist was shocked that Dr. Lee did not even bother to remove the impacted tooth before inserting the implant!!! I quickly canceled the implant surgery with Dr. Lee and am now seeking for a REAL implant specialist, not a general dentist who is greedy and tries to do more than he is qualified for. He has taken nearly $8000 from my pocket and yet I'm still where I started, in need of a good dental implant. This whole ordeal with Sunrise Dental has left me broke and unable to trust dentists. I only gave them two stars because the receptionists and dental assistants were wonderful. As for the dentist, please do go somewhere else. read more

I've been a patient of Dr. Lee for over 12 years now... My patient-DDS relationship is longer than I've had with ANY doctors. This is a true testament of how great Dr. Lee is! Though he has a no nonsense attitude and a quirky sense of humor, which I attribute to too many years of schooling, he is completely professional! Before Dr. Lee came along, I use to hate going to the dentist... Truthfully, I am not too fond of it now, but Dr. Lee and his staff makes each visit as pleasant as it can possibly be for me. And this is truly important as I'm directed by my periodontist to have my teeth cleaned and checked at least 3 times a year. Here's why I would not be seeking out a new dentist any time soon... Before Dr. Lee, I've had many many many BAD experiences with DDS. For instance, when I was a kid, a DDS chose to do a root canal on one of my front teeth! Only a bad DDS would advise such a thing... 'cause in my 30s, that tooth discolored so badly that I ended up needing veneers. With Dr. Lee and his staff, my appointment is always on time. Understanding my gum issues, Dr. Lee is extremely meticulous in his examination and treatment. His dental hygenist is always gentle when cleaning my teeth. His staff is always polite, nice, and professional. His office is beautiful and spacious, but more importantly it is spic-and-span clean! I'm so impressed by Dr. Lee that everyone in my family is seeing him... and soon, so will my kids! Dr. Ly is one of those dentists who makes you feel oddly at ease in the chair. I am one of those kids who grew up traumatized by my experiences at the dentists. Which led to a natural uneasiness whenever I have to go in for a checkup. When I found Dr. Ly, I was really hoping it works out. My mom was actually a long term patient of his and she highly recommended him. I thought it was strange she would ask me to drive all the way to Milpitas for the dentist. But she knows my issues and spoke highly of him. Guess what? It did work out. He is professional, from the way he speaks to you to the way he explains the process of what he's doing. Again, I am a nervous wreck at the dentist, even at 23. I like to know what's being done and how and he patiently walks me through it. You don't know how many times I've seen my previous dentists annoyed by my questions and uncertainties. Well, I can't help it! And Dr. Ly certainly puts me at ease. After a couple visits and talking to him, I also found him quirky and quite funny. Which leads to me being even more comfortable. Now, when I get those check up mails, I'm not so nervous anymore. His office is modern, clean and immaculate. Bonus points with plenty of magazines! His receptionists and assistants are all so kind and helpful. Also, it doesn't hurt that Great Mall is right there. So even if I am coming in for something a little more serious than a check-up, I can go do a little therapy shopping afterwards. We used to go to Park Victoria Dental before they cost us over $2k in terrible front office billing. Since moving over to Sunsrise Dental, we've been receiving some of the best dental care I've experienced in my 55 years of going to dentists. We've had everything from crowns to partial dentures to root canals to orthodontic treament for both our boys. Dr. Ly Nguyen will always spend as much time as necessary with his patients to make them feel relaxed and provide them with the best, professional consultation about all their dental concerns and needs. Dr Nguyen has always been willing to negotiate with us on some of the more expensive procedures, and his front office are friendly and really on top of their game when it comes to insurance carrier billing, including coordinated benefits between multiple dental plans. To our family, the front office operations are just as important as the back office treatment. Sunrise Dental's procedures are some of the most competitive I've seen - don't take my word for it, shop around for yourself and you'll discover that this office will provide you with some of the most cost-competitive treatment in the Bay Area for top quality dental work. Although generally appointment only, the front office gals will always find a way to squeeze you in for an emergency (we've had a few of those). 9/20/2010 UPDATE I took in my old magazines. Guys, there's now some Popular Mechanics, Mens Health & American Rifleman -- enjoy. Reading the previous review, I felt compelled to put in my $0.02 as I was very surprised with what was stated. I personally am VERY happy with Sunrise Dental, & now realize that Service providers also deserve a positive yelp review when earned (as up until now, I only yelp about restaurants... with the exception of bad experiences at Best Buy). Anyway, a little background about me before I review my experience with Sunrise Dental: I've had my share of TERRIBLE experiences with dentists over the years. I've once had a dentist who injected & numbed up the wrong side of my mouth... I figured he was just numbing my whole mouth until he started to push & prod my tooth & asking if I could feel anything. My response, "... uhh... no, but I think that's the wrong tooth." I also had a cavity filled where the dentist forgot to put some kind of barrier to prevent contact with the nerves or something. As I then went overseas, I lived with major tooth sensitivity for over a year. I don't know what was worse... forgetting the barrier thingy because he was busy asking me about computers, or the fact that he admitted to me later that he forgot. I appreciate honesty... but was absolutely convinced that despite being a DDS, he wasn't the sharpest tool in the shed. Anyway, my wife & myself have been going to Sunrise Dental for many years -- at least 7 yrs. We had come to try Sunrise Dental as a result of a referral from my wife's really good friend (who is also a dentist in the San Jose area). On a visit to see her, she looked at my wife's teeth & gums & recommended that she find a new dentist (as my wife has underlying issues that was not being properly cared for by her dentist at the time). Unfortunately we could not use our friend -- as she is out of our insurance plan... & we didn't want to take advantage of her with free services. Ironically we also have 2 other relatives that are dentists... all who live too far away though to be my wife's regular dentist (she needs to go every 3 months). On a couple occasions when our dentist cousins visit us, they have gone with us to Sunrise Dental. Of course with our bad luck with dentists in the past, we do not disclose that we have a dentist on our side watching & evaluating everything they do. My cousins don't say much, so I doubt anyone knows they're dentists (honestly, they look like hoodlums when vacationing away from home -- where they have to worry about professional appearances in the community) Call me a skeptic or call me jaded... but with our track record with bad dentists, I think our covert ops is justified. Anyway, according to both of my cousins (on many separate visits), explanations & 5 of the witnessed procedures that Dr. Ly conducted was done spot-on. And trust me, I doubt Dr. Ly acts any differently just because there's an observer in the dental area. Other patients of Dr. Ly (who have been regular patients) know what I'm talking about... he's a rather unfazed & eccentric Doc (in a funny & good way!). Thus, a fellow dentist referral; no complaints from my dentist cousins; the 7-years of great service & the vast improvements in my wife's oral issues... GOOD ENOUGH FOR ME!! As for the accusations of shady biz practices... that's SCARY if it's true. Though I do not have backstage access, I have not seen anything shady personally. In fact, I think Sunrise Dental is a very clean office. All in all, I'm inclined to give the benefit of the doubt to Sunrise Dental as I have been very happy with Dr. Ly for many years. In fact, so impressed, that we continue to do the drive from Sacramento every 3 months. We have also referred many of our friends & relatives who live around the Sacramento & SJ area which says a lot. If I HAD to find a complaint, it would be: The waiting room reading material is poor... geared mostly to females. Guys bring your own magazine unless you're into cosmo, reader's digest, us, people, etc. On a side note, I just realized: Being such regulars, I believe there are only 3 employees (2 girls & 1 guy) that work at Sunrise Dental besides Dr. Ly & his wife. The guy & one of the girls has been there for a long time, & the other girl was new -- or she could be the intern -- as I didn't recognize her at last weeks appointment. If that's the case... the informant is pretty ballsy (as I'd easily make a guess to who "spilled the beans" based on deductive reasoning)... if word got out, she'd be committing employment suicide :p Of course I could be wrong. Plus, you've always got to consider the possibility of flat-out rumors circulating! I'm not pointing any fingers here... just stating possibilities. Anywho... until I see something personally, I am not swayed... Maybe I'll work up the nerve to ask Dr. Ly at our next appointment... of course after my wife's appointment is done... lol jk read more

Since 2004 my wife and I have received annual exams, deep-cleanings and the occasional filling replacement and on all occasions have received the level of care comparable with older, more established ($$$$$) practices. I cannot speak to the more elaborate services (that usually require specialists) but I have no trouble recommending them for the above services. read more

I've been going to Sunrise Dental for my dental needs for over 10 years. Dr. Ly Nguyen is very knowledgeable, gentle and compassionate. Recently, I have my bridges done here; Dr. Ly had done an amazing job. I can see myself that I smile more often now. Thanks Dr. Ly! Amy also did an excellent job for cleaning my teeth. The staffs are very friendly and warm. The facility is superior clean and they have up to date equipment. I would definitely recommend this office to anyone and everyone! read more

I just got there today with my son. I don't know why some people intentionally harm a business reputation. I also work in customer service so I can understand how to deal with toxic customers. The dentist and his staff were so friendly to us. They also took time to go over with me regarding insurance coverage and other charges. Thanks! read more

I've been going to Sunrise dental for the past 4 years and I can honestly say that I've never had any bad experiences so far. So i was bit shocked to see all these bad reviews on here. Even when it's pretty busy there, my longest wait would be 10- 15 minutes max. All the staffs are extremely friendly and for some reason, they always seem to remember my name even though i haven't been back for awhile. Dr. Lee's wife does my cleaning most of the time which i prefer because she is so gentle and does not make it painful at all. My siblings and I actually got our braces done here for a surprisingly low price and i have to say i'm quite happy with my results, my teeth couldn't turned out any better. Dr. Lee is smart, funny and truly a professional, overall a excellent dentist. I would definitely recommend this place to my friends but it's turns out, some of them do already go here lol read more

My general dentist referred me to Sunrise Dental Group to seek a consultation regarding an operation for an upper denture procedure. On 3/1/2011 I had arrived at my scheduled 3 PM appointment for this consultation. After being admitted I was told they need to do an x-ray of the lower portion of the mouth. I refused as again I explained that I only needed a consultation for a denture procedure in the upper part only. They insisted they need to take x-rays for the consultation even though I had brought them recent x-rays from my dentist. After confirming there will not be an extra charge I agreed to let them take the unnecessary x-rays. Right after the x-rays the demanded that I make the $120 consultation fee payment before the dentist would look at my case. I was insulted and surprised by such a request to pay before services were rendered but made the payment without argument. After some time a dentist came in to review and explain the procedure. From the x-rays he pointed out there needs to be other work done in the lower portion of the mouth which I was not concerned with at the time. Finally he explained the procedure for the upper denture and CONFIRMED that he will supply me with a written plan of the several options and costs involved that I will have in making a choice to implement a denture procedure before I leave his office. The explanation was brief giving me 2 or 3 options and before I could ask him more questions about the procedures he quickly ended the session stating he first needs to write this all down on paper and return to explain and finish answering my question. After a few minutes of waiting again a lady came in who I assume must be a counselor, saleswoman or office manager to go over the costs for the various options. She did not provide me with any documentation only feeding me the numbers verbally. She stated before I leave she will provide me with the full estimate and costs for each option to take home so I will be able to review this later on. The dentist never returned and minutes later when this lady came in to ask which plan I might consider I told her I will need to get another opinion before I make any decisions. Then instructed her to provide me with my x-rays which I brought and the treatment plan paperwork as I needed to leave. Again I was asked to wait as they needed to make copies of the x-rays. In the waiting room I sat for about half hour before they gave me the envelope with my x-rays. When Leaving I opened the envelope and found my x-rays which I brought and no paperwork as they promised for which I had paid for. When I asked her where was the estimate and options plan she said since you don't know which plan you want I'm not going to waste my time writing this up. I was late for another appointment and did not engage in this argument. I was cheated and not provided any service for which I gave them $120 and they gave me nothing in return. I paid for a written consultation and answers to question I had and they promised me several times a written proposal that I could take and never received anything for which I paid them. read more
