So I had less that 1/4 of hair growth and needed a wax for my upcoming beach trip. Yelped it and found this place. I made an appointment and was very pleased. I was taken back as soon as I walked in. I de-pantsed, they examined what they were working with and then got down to business. It was not as painful as I thought it was going to be especially since I had about a week and change of growth. After they had finished and sprayed me down with a soothing spray; I had examined the area for the most part it was flawless. However it is understood that I did have short hair; that there were going to be a few that didn't get caught by the wax. I told Sue and she had the tech come back; no problems. When she was done the second time it was ALL FLAWLESS. I am sad to say that I am leaving the area; and won't be back for a year. I am so, so thankful for Claudia's review. I was looking for a place that could get me in quickly for a Brazilian and that uses sugar (why anyone would use anything but sugar for a Brazilian is beyond me). I found her review and called Sunrise and had an appointment the next day. The waxing rooms are small, but well-lit with soothing music and a comfortable bed. Su, the owner, was my esthetician and she was funny and sweet. She was also quite quick but very, very thorough. Plus, the pain was minimal, even less than my usual salon. As I told some friends, this was the best Brazilian of my life, and I'm not exaggerating. Sunrise is expensive though - full Brazilians are $90 (though I was able to purchase a special savings package). I'll be back whenever the budget allows. read more

This review is only for waxing services. The ladies who do the sugar waxing here (doesn't matter the area) ...totally know what they're doing. This is the best wax I've had in my life hands down. I've been going here for years, and have been burned (literally) when attempting to stray and find a new place. She decided to try Sunrise Hair Studio. What my mother wanted was not difficult. Take off a few inches and just freshen up the layers. I didn't think a 'professional hairstylist' could be so terrible at a simple haircut. My mother's hair is now UNEVEN and CHOPPY all over! I am so angry that she paid someone to do this to her hair! It seriously looks like a three year old child took a scissor and had fun with her hair. Apparently the owner of the salon was present at the time so I have no idea why a respectable salon owner would let a client walk out with such a terrible hair job! BEST Brazilian waxing experience ever! Since I have been waxing since I was 14 I didn't think there was anything about wax that I did not already know. However, at Sunrise I was introduced to sugaring wax hair removal. Sugaring really isn't "wax"... CC was my waxologist. She was friendly, informative about the product and made me feel extremely comfortable. Sugaring is made up of sugar, lemon and water/vinegar. It is not as hot as regular wax, doesn't stick to the skin, no bruising, no breakouts, LESS pain and appears to be an overall quicker process... I'm converted! CC also shared that sugaring leads to permanent hair removal. (Time will tell on that one, but the thought of less hair in my unmentionable area seems amazing.) For a full Brazilian, my appointment took less than 30 minutes= Thank God! When I was checking out, I met Su the manager. Su is so lovely. She noticed that I lived in Burke and told me to visit her next time at the Annandale location. I was really surprised to read the negative review of getting a Brazilian wax done at Sunrise by Su. I've had four there now and have never had any problems. She usually gets me in the same day I call, and then I haven't had to wait for anything. She uses sugaring material, which is SO better than wax (I have tried both). Su is quick but she also takes her time, and she's so thorough. I went to another place in Arlington with a Groupon and she used wax and left alot of areas undone. I'm a bigger girl and Su definitely made me feel comfortable. She goes right to it like she's seen it all before (which I'm sure she has). Groupon or no, I'll keep going to Su. When it comes down to it, I am a bad girl. And what I mean by that is, I don't generally care about my hair and it leads to me looking like I have a poodle on my head. Time definitely came for a haircut, but making an appointment, of course, would be the last thing I think about. Come Saturday at 5p, I decided that the poodle must go for walk off my head. I called Sunrise and the receptionist hesitated to offer me a slot, but allowed me to come in at 7 (closing time). I made it there at 7:02 and received a phone call at 7:00 asking if I was going arrive. Rightfully so, I felt horrible when I saw everyone leaving but my stylist, Shearn. They offered me the 20% discount, being that it was my first time. And Shearn was great! Even though he was hungry, he didn't rush through my haircut at all. He started up conversation and was quite gentle to my rough shaggy dog hair. The whole process took about 65-80 minutes and I felt like my money was well spent. Shearn was very meticulous and every strand got its TLC. I felt bad because it was misting outside, possibly to be pouring the next moment, and Shearn had taken lots of care to blow dry my hair nicely. His touch of anti-frizz did the trick and my hair has held up fine in the last two days. :) I'm a fan. I hope that this first impression is for real and my next visit will be just as enjoyable. read more

Was going to another salon in Herndon where I loved the place and the stylist but my hair never seemed to come out right. After three visits and a couple of revisits to fix the mistakes, I decided to change salons and find a place closer to home. I will admit that Sunrise isn't as nice as it could be. It has some great potential and the location is perfect. All I could think about while I was waiting was how simple and inexpensive it would be to update the salon a bit and give it a better feel. I ignored my impulse to leave and remembered the reviews I'd read on Yelp about the stylists. I had my appointment with Shearn and ended up pleased that I'd stayed. Despite what little English he speaks and my broken Korean, we were able to communicate what needed to be done. The last salon had fried my hair with their coloring and "corrections" so I had a significant amount of hair loss and breakage with subsequent regrowth. He was an artist with my hair. He was meticulous, detailed and took his time to get the cut perfect. At the other salon, I'd felt pushed off to an assistant and at times, like an inconvenience while the stylist worked on two customers at once. Not at all like that here. The all-over color he did was also perfect and I was really nervous because my hair had been so over-processed (again, thanks to the "corrections.") I went back a day or so later for an 'up-do'. It wasn't quite what I wanted but I had to leave before we could finish. Again, he was meticulous and very detailed with the style. He took such great care in all of his work that it's obvious he's not only talented but cares what the results are. A couple of pins in my hair when I got home and it was JUST what I wanted. He even went out of his way to paint the pins to my hair color when the supply store ran out of bobby pins in brunette! Despite the run-down appearance, I love the feeling of the place. (This review is for the hair salon) When I came in for my appointment, I came in with 5 photos of the color and the shape of the haircut. I expressed that I wanted to keep the length, wanted a V-cut in the back with layers, and movement. This is not what I got and this is despite the hairdresser saying he knew exactly what I was talking talking. (I even asked him if he wanted to take a look at the photos I brought again, and he declined because he apparently knew what I wanted.) At this point, I was feeling pretty confident about the haircut. He dry cut my hair (no complaints there) and started cutting my hair at angles, like some kind of razor cut. There was a lot of requests to move my head for different angles and I legit thought I was getting a snazzy new hairdo. Still confident at this point that I was getting what I wanted. Then my confidence started to slip when I first noticed how short it was getting. At this point, I was locked in to the haircut...unless I wanted a thinned out a-symmetric cut, which, I most certainly could not pull off. The end result was about 4inches off, but the absolute worst part was that my hair was thinned out from whatever technique he used. Sure, there was movement, but ONLY because my hair was so thinned out and whispy at the bottom. This is what I'm most annoyed about. I never said anything about reducing the thickness of my hair. Nada. Nothing. I ended up skipping the hair color. After examining it in better lighting outside of the salon and trying to figure out how much hair I lost (yes), I realized how bad it was. The v-cut was there, but the pictures I brought in were apparently forgotten, as was my request to keep the length. The 1 star is only for the location and the patient/nonchatty-ness of the hairdresser and the lady behind the desk. The haircut gets 0 stars and I would not return for a haircut here. I hate getting my haircut for good reasons: impatient, antsy when still for too long, afraid I'll come out with no hair, and hate to pay for haircuts even more: they're expensive! Anyhow, after calling a few salons in the area and being quoted $70 for a haircut, I figured $55 was the best I was going to get ...at Sunrise, this is the price without styling my hair. Volter ... Valter? introduced himself and asked me to tell him about my hair. I don't know ??? It's dead. I just need a haircut. He told me he would give me a dry cut, design my hair, shape my hair, give it LIFE. I was getting reallll impatient as he tediously pulled small sections of my hair, combed six times while pulling hair to the other side of my head, and cutting in jagged motions. A lot of hair was coming off my head. I was scared. He took his time, and was very patient while cutting. My hair was long and kept getting tangled at the bottom. He cut off threeish inches, while still keeping a good amount of length. My hair has a design! It has shape! It's bouncy and light! Yeah, he gave my hair life. I ain't even ask for allla that. Just had a stellar experience at Sunrise in Old Town Alexandria. The stylist 'Ocean' is a true professional. He wowed me from beginning to end..;-) He is hip, fun and approachable which I needed when explaining what I wanted. Ocean made my hair (which is long and thick) look and feel amazing for summer. He texturized it on the sides and my wind swept bangs. He made my straigh look in the back a 'U' which is good for my type of hair and he evened out my layers. He's meticulous and took his time with me.I used a trubates coupon and paid $29.00 for an $65.00 hair cut. If you go to trubates.com and then dc - you will find the coupon there for a few more days.. Sue at the front desk is bubbly and sweet. The last time I was there for a service, I remember I told her I needed to go add coins to the meter and she ran out there with her quarters and just added it to the tab. She didn't even know where I had parked it but before offering..I will definitely go back there. They are full service.. I walked into Sunrise Hair Studio after Su asked me to come to their Alexandria location for a brazilian wax--I've said this about her before and I'll say it again: she has magic hands. I leave satisfied every time, even at 6 months pregnant. Not only that--but its CHEAP! I usually pay between $80 and $100 for a brazilian before I discovered Su, and now I'm paying HALF of that! Also, after my appointment Su suggested a hair cut. I've never been one to trust my hair to anyone--until I moved to Virginia I had the same woman cutting my hair for over ten years (thick, curly, high maintenance). Well, I was so happy with my waxing experience that I decided to give it a try, and she gave it to me at a price that I thought was unheard of for a head like mine. Ocean ended up cutting my hair, and, I'm not just saying this, it was the best hair cut I've ever gotten. Not only that, but the man is a magician with a blow dryer--my hair never looked better! I bought a Groupon for a Brazilian sugaring here and read the rave reviews on the girls who do it here. I came in after having cancelled my appointment to see if they could still squeeze me in last minute. They looked like they were about to go to lunch and still got me in without waiting which I greatly appreciate. I went to the Alexandria location. The facility is a little unprofessional looking for the price tag associated with the wax (without a coupon of course) but I'm not one to judge appearances but what they can deliver. I don't remember the girl's name who did mine, but I know it wasn't Sue because I asked for her and she wasn't in that day. We got back to the room and she started a little polite conversation and was very nice all around. She was quick and understood that it was my first time and I was squirming and groaning. I was only in there a good 10 minutes. However it was not very thorough, and I had a significant amount of hairs left behind that she claimed were due to "shaving". These were long hairs (at least 6 mm) that I think would be easy to get out had she gone over the spots a few more times, not teeny stubbly hairs. I understand that sugaring is supposed to be able to get hairs as small as 3mm which is why I decided to get the service. I'm a little disappointed at the lack of attention to detail, especially from a facility asking a high price for their services. If I had paid the full price I would be a little more than upset. read more

Mixed review... I took my daughter in on a Sunday in January to get her hair "fixed" - her hair was horribly hacked a few weeks earlier elsewhere. Valter, at Sunrise, did an great job - her hair looked so much better. The cut was $25 (kid's cute) - I tipped $10 - the reason I say this is so that when you read what happened next, you don't think, maybe that lady didn't tip well (not that that should be an excuse for poor customer service). I made a follow-up appointment for 8 weeks later - on a Sunday - I left my name and phone number (my cell phone number, that I answer - that also has an answering machine - so no reason not to be contacted). When my daughter and I arrived on the day of her appointment, the shop was not open. I called, no answer (I wasn't sure if the phone may be forwarded). I left a message - including my phone number. No one ever showed up (I was hoping that Valter would come for her appointment, at least). We waited 15 minutes after her scheduled appointment - when no one ever showed up, we left. Here is the reason for the one star... NO ONE ever called me back, to apologize, to explain - NOTHING! This is how they do business? Well then, they have lost mine! read more

I have to say I like this place. After desperately searching for someone to cut my hair for almost 3 years, I found Ocean here after buying the groupon. He doesn't say much, which is fine with me, just gets down to business. I've been twice and both times left 100% pleased with the imaginative cut he gave me. He does take a really long time to blow dry my hair though, so next time I'll skip that part and just get the cut and be on my way. Can't speak to the other services, don't use them. I called with a groupon and they let me walk in almost that moment for my haircut. They redeemed my groupon before I arrived. As I sat down in the chair Valter explained to me that he was going to have to up charge me for my haircut (they told me this is on account of my short, curly hair. I only ever had an extra added when my hair was long but never for hair texture. I understand that this might be the salons policy.) Valter told me they did this so salon could make any money off the groupon deal. This confused me as businesses decide to offer deals through groupon and they would have known the conditions. He asked me if this was okay after they had already redeemed my deal so. I couldn't have come back and used it later. Valter did give me a great cut and he blew it out to perfection. He did burn my scalp a few times but it's only a little red and didn't hurt. Pros: great cut, super great shampoo, very knowledgable. Cons: they for some reason are trying to make more money off of the groupon as if it was a regular appointment. Went here for a groupon. It was getting near expiration time. Not to overshare, but ladies, don't we all resent getting waxed? Well here they do a "sugaring". The first thing that impressed me was their flexibility. I called and scheduled an appt for 2 days later. The next day I found out I had a work meeting that would preclude me from leaving early; they let me reschedule. When it monsooned, they let me get there late. Sugaring is so much better than waxing--it is faster, less painful, and doesn't cause the skin irritation I was starting to get with waxing. Cece was awesome. Love this place. Su and Ocean are extremely welcoming, friendly, and do a great job in their respective areas. Su does a phenomenal job with sugaring---which is slightly different (and certainly less painful) than waxing, and her apprentice is also very good, thorough, and efficient. I tried out Ocean for the first time for and he did a fantastic job---he checked with me before doing anything drastic (by drastic I mean cutting 1" of hair), was detail oriented, fun to talk to---but didn't talk the entire time, and super reasonable. Although I knew it wasn't going to be a pain free experience-I think the fact that it was over with so quickly made it more endurable. The method used is sugaring. Looks like they've pretty much perfected the technique considering how fast Sue works. It was over before I knew it-and I even had my eyebrows cleaned-up free of charge. I've tried a few places to get a brazilian in DC. I would say this place is comparable to BLISS waxing, which I love but it is WAAAY too expensive. I don't spend $90 for a trim on the hair on my head... why would I spend $90 down there? Ya catch my drift? Anyway, with the purchase of a special savings package its about $50 for one Brazilian. They allowed me to pay two installments of $100 dollars for four waxes. That aint bad!! I went to CiCi, she is great! The place is clean, and she goes super quick. Yeah it hurts, but hey that's life. She's a whiz with sugaring, which I love, but she also has other waxes on hand in order to use the best method for your skin. Sue is very fast yet also quite efficient. I don't normally take the time to write a review, but I'm so pleased with Valter's work that I wanted to share my experience with others. I went to Sunrise Hair Studio because they were open on a Sunday, had great reviews, and were able to take me a few hours after I called. Already off to a good start! Valter was my stylist, and I asked for highlights and a graduated bob. Valter cut my hair while it was dry (I'd never had this done before!) and highlighted it afterwards. He was very friendly, and I could tell that he was passionate about his work. He took his time (the whole process took quite a while - about three hours - but I do have a LOT of hair), and he paid great attention to detail. I knew I was in good hands! The cut and color were exactly what I was hoping for, and I couldn't be happier with the results. I received a lot of compliments today, and Valter deserves the credit. I uploaded two photos if you'd like to see the color and cut for yourself. I'm not sure what prices are typically like in this area, but a friend said she paid more money at a different studio for just partial highlights (I think I got full highlights). I give Valter 4 stars and the waxing department 2 stars. Valter-- He is not the traditional hair stylist and is a little "odd," but I've gone to him twice and have been very pleased both times. He takes pride in his work, so the amount of time can vary. He is excellent with the razor is you want only a trim! Be specific and tell him exactly what you want, and he will deliver. Waxing-- Varies greatly! They seem to have high turnover. There used to be a young girl who was great but recently there seems to be a serious lag in talent (and increase in pain)! read more

"I GUARANTEE IT MY WORK!" said my new favorite hair artist, Shearan at Sunrise Hair Studio. I can't say enough great things about Shearan at Sunrise Hair Studio, the owner Sue, and the location and overall effort to help me with my Brazillian straightening. I have had this process done so many times, in different salons in different states. I have gone to places that were the most expensive I could find, hoping that the more money I spent, the better the process would take to my hair. I went to places that featured people who my girlfriend said were the experts at this process, the ladies referred to as the"Dominicans", she called them. While the Domincan women were lovely, after one wash, my hair went back to curly. They were nice enough to do it again for free, but to no avail. With the help of Yelp, I found Sunrise. What a beautiful "sunrise" it was. First, I was running late for a blind date. They took me right away and stayed open late to help me! Shearn stated that he would not rush the treatment, but would help me get out of the door quiclky with the blow dry and cut to assist me in getting to my blind date on time. "The Brazillian is an art" he said. He refused to work anywhere that wanted him to work quickly so he could squeeze in extra clients and the expense of the process and the client. He takes real pride in his work and showed me the different samples of types of hair that used different types of treatments. "You can't just use one type of product process for all types of hair," he said. When he pulled out the sample board and showed me the types of hair, I had to agree that he had chosen a sample that matched my hair. He worked efficiently and had nothing but a smile and asked me if I would like to talk about his history and how he had come to be an expert at the process. It was nice to be asked, because sometimes I am not in the frame of mind to make small talk. He had me so relaxed, I was exicted to hear all about it. He told me that people questioned how he could come to do this process so well, since he was Korean. He said "it doesn't matter where you are from, if you take pride in your work." I never even asked the price, because even though I am not rich, I was willing to spend what it took to have this process come with a "GUARANTEE!" I was so amazed at the finished product, the cut and blow dry. It was priced so reasonably, that I couldn't beleive it when I left ahead of schedule for my date. I actually thought they had made a mistake when they told me the price, but they insisted they hadn't and that as long as I came, it would always be the same price to have the process done even if it were a year from now. Someone, I read here on Yelp, stated in their testimonial that the studio was not the best looking and could use a face lift or redecorating to make it prettier. It was clean and very sanitary. I don't care about the way that it looks, I care about the way my hair looks and if the process was done correctly. I didn't come to be pampered, I came with a vision and they helped me to acheive it. Maybe they don't spend money on magical decorations that make you feel like you are at a "spa", but maybe keeping their own costs low, allows them to keep what it cost me to have my hair done. I am a 38 year old woman with difficult hair, the product of my wonderful African American father and my beautiful white English mother. I have had all my life to find hair dressers that could work with my hair. After seeing before and after pictures of Shearn's work with women of many different ethnic backgrounds, I have finally found the person that I trust at Sunrise. Shearn has the ability to work with hair of a person of any ethnic background. Please take the time to go to this Old Town Alexandria hair studio. No hair stylist has ever said, "I GUARANTEE MY WORK!" I had no idea that a place existed right around the corner from me in Old Town Alexandria. This salon is the best hidden gem in the area! I have been going here for years. Su does a fantastic job on my brows, she makes them look natural and she is extremely detailed. I have tried other salons, but this is the only salon I go to for my waxings. The experience is painless, professional and quite reasonably priced. They often offer their clients fresh fruit while they are waiting, our upon their departure...C'mon...who does that? And there is the sweetest gentleman in there, that does acupuncture. Shearn is amazing. I actually made a Yelp account for the sole purpose of leaving a review for him and this salon - amazing customer service and a great find overall. I had been shuffling around various hair dressers and salons for years since I lived and work in the Old Town area, never seeming to keep the same stylist as they would leave their place of work or they did an overpriced and/or crappy job. So I did my research on Yelp, and I thank my lucky stars that I came across this place in my searching (of course lured by the great deal I see they are still offering). And also lucky for me, I got an appointment with Shearn, whom I've been a faithful customer to since January. Not only did he save me from a horrific hair cut and dye job, but he went over and beyond the amount of attention he paid to my hair- seriously meticulous and he even takes personal notes of his clients to keep track of them (hair issues and preferences, etc) for the next time they come back. I have gotten highlights from him, hair cuts, and even the brazillian keratin treatment. He is amazing at everything! I highly recommend him- BUT, as I said above, he is meticulous and thorough so keep a block of time open (partial highlights and trim for me take about 3 hours - sometimes more and sometimes less). But definitely well worth it. To boot, he is also nice. He has a customer for life! I have no idea how the other stylists are here but I'm sure they are great as well - either way, this salon is fabulous and having been to several in the area, this is by far the best and I'll keep coming back. As far as price goes, it seems to vary customer-to-customer. He quoted me a flat rate on my hair texture and length, and in comparison to other salons, it's a great value and price. read more

I went in to get a Brazilian wax. They used sugar. It was like a ball of dark waxy snot. She rolled it and ripped it all over my vagina, even going over some of the spots multiple times that she'd already done. This caused a lot of pain. In the end, there was still hair left. I honestly could have done a better job if I had used some Nair at home. Never again. My daughter said its better to get a Brazilian with regular wax and strips. read more

Best sugar wax in Northern Virginia. I have been visiting Sue Huk Scott since 2004 when she was in Annandale. She has always been so flexible and friendly. She is quite skilled in bikini, Brazilian, and all types of waxing and this is why I keep coming back year after year. Sue does a fast, thorough job, and her rates are more than reasonable. She always cleans and finishes up the waxed area so that her client is pleased. Others have commented on her availability and it's no exaggeration. I finally got my first Brazilian wax by Sue and can't say enough great things about her. I had been putting this experience off for a while because I have super sensitive skin and no tolerance for pain. However, I knew that I am not up for shaving anymore so had to toughen up and go for it. Sue is an expert with the sugar wax. She knows exactly when to distract you, what area to hold without making you feel uncomfortable, and how quick to move without making you feel overwhelmed. It definitely didn't hurt as much as I expected, especially for it being my first time. Sue is wonderful and I will definitely recommend her to my friends and my clients (I'm a business owner).
