Storm rolling in at Sunset Beach

Nice little area with a beach. The only downside for me is, while we were there, there was a very loud kid's party. It was impossible to get away from because the area is tiny. I am glad for the kids having fun, but the noise made it impossible for me to enjoy the area more fully. Such is life. There is a bathroom right there too. Always a plus!

This has become a fave place for us to see sunsets. We love to look for areas that are pretty chill, not so touristy, and easy to park kinda sunset view places. We found a perfect place on Sunset Beach where we can park and see the sunset from the car. It is a condo with a parking lot and the beach is about five steps away. So easy to see the sunset especially when the weather extremes are around like when it's too cold in the winter. This spot is definitely our newest happy go to place. Shh, I'll keep quiet unless you ask nicely lol!

Yup! This is the beach for me! I think I've found my go-to beach for now. My sister came to town to visit and we didn't really have a plan but I just wanted her to relax and feel like she was on vacation even though she was visiting me. Sunset Beach was a perfect place to relax and have the feel of being on a remote island but not really being on a remote island. I kind of just moved to this area and am still trying to get a feel for the best beaches. I'm not sure if this beach was perfect because it's the offseason or what but there weren't that many people on the beach and there was plenty of space to lay out and picnic without feeling crowded. There are several parking lots to park in along the way, so just pick the one that is less crowded and head out. I love that the parking lot was literally just a few feet from the beach so you don't have to haul your stuff a long distance from the lot not that we had a lot of stuff. It was only about $7 to pay to park for 3 hours which was great. Once we got to the beach, the sand was perfect and didn't really stick to your skin that much so that you don't have a lot of sand in places that you wished you hadn't gotten it. It also made for easy clean up as it didn't stick to our beach mat and a quick shake of the mat did the trick to get off all the sand. Water....amazing! It was cool at first but feels a bit warmer once you get in. I kind of wish I brought a snorkel to see if there were any fish. It also seems quite shallow because I noticed several people at least 100+ feet off the beach in the water and the water was only up to mid-thigh level. So that might be great if you can't swim really well. The signs say to watch our for stingrays during certain seasons as well as sea turtle egg-laying spots, but there weren't any problems with either. I suggest bringing a beach umbrella for a little shade as there weren't many overhanging trees to provide much shade or those spots were taken quite quickly. Then...the sunset! I was astounded because many of the areas from where I moved from have people's houses blocking access to the beach and it's hard to catch a genuinely awesome view of the sun setting. Not at sunset beach though. The name of the area rings true to the name. It truly is a sunset beach and probably one of the best...so far. I'm thankful that this beach is so clean and that I can just go right out to the beach with no problems, find a decent spot to lay out, and relax until the sun sets. Just beautiful!

A beach is a beach for this northern transplant into Florida. I love the beach so no complaints at all about this one!! I wish I lived closer. The pavilion is spacious and shaded. Lots of tables to eat at. The playground at the pavilion is great. Beach is amazing!! Parking is not horrible and is located right on the beach with plenty if spaces. We love staying for hours and hours. Make sure you put in st. Pete sunset beach...or you might almost end up at the Tarpon Springs Sunset beach!

This right here is my heaven. I've lived in Florida most of my life and been to all the beaches here and around the world and this is the beach where my cares melt away. It is such a sweet beach and when you're a local you get greeted with a smile by the nicest beach people ever. The sand is beautiful the sunsets are magical. My happy place.

Very clean (no seaweed) and not over crowded. Parking is not free, be patient and wait for a spot.

Very clean (no seaweed). Parking is not free, be patient and wait for a spot. If gay people offend you, this beach may not be for you. Although, it is a public beach and all are welcome.

A passerby offered to take our picture as we watched the sunset.

White sand, birds, and tranquility - this is our favorite Gulf Coast beach. The island community of Sunset Beach has grown more and more popular over the past twenty years with many of the smaller private homes being torn down to make room for multi-story units but Sunset Beach remains a quiet, peaceful tranquil place to get-away, rest and relax on the beach. There are two access areas with public parking (average cost $2.00 per hour, metered spots) and finding a space is usually not an issue. At the South end of the island, the municipal beach area has a building with outdoor showers to get the sand off you as well as clean bathrooms. They also have vending machines and a picnic area. On our last visit in May there was a bachelorette party with music on Sunday evening. As you can see in our pictures the sunsets are amazing every day from anywhere on the beach. We love to watch the sunset and walk at the waters edge just far enough to get your feet and lower legs wet in the surf.

Lovely beach very privet not a lot of people. But you have to pay for parking can get kind of expensive especially if you are planning on spending a whole day there.

Are beach umbrellas or tents allowed at this beach?

Yes. We go often and couldn't live without it. Especially now :-)!

    Are dogs allowed?

No, as you enter any of the beach access points you will see a sign that dogs are not permitted along with alcohol, glass or vehicles. During our last week there we did not see any pets or dogs on any of the public beaches.

Paying for parking immediately. Set the tone, especially since there's nothing particularly special about this beach. On top of that, I didn't realize until after I paid for parking that it's not dog friendly, which feels ridiculous for such a wide open public space. Sand, I did venture out for a while and the sound was ultra fine which super annoying. The views are okay and it wasn't crowded which is nice but now I know why. Most of the people I saw were much older and were fully dressed walking on the pathway and not really utilizing the beach. There are so many beaches in Florida. I'm not sure why anyone comes here. Nothing stood out or made us want to stay or really justified all the inconveniences. This beach is just meh and if you're close by ok but definitely not worth going out of your way for.

Nature won't let you down. But the actual island is slowly going down hill. The famous white sand beach is still there, but is suffering a little from erosion and now has areas of scrub as well. Recently extra sand was imported in, but 2 back to back hurricanes have spread that new sand everywhere but on the beach. Beware of the parking situation. It's funny that you can park in downtown St Petersburg or at Tampa Airport for less money than on Treasure Island. Unless you are staying at a motel or hotel on the beach that gives you a parking space along with your room expect to pay at least $6 an hour for parking on the beach. Stick to city owned parking lots. The privately owned lots are true tourist traps. At Pirate Square strip mall I paid online and still received a $63 parking ticket! There is no way to contact the company to complain and if you pay within a few days they reduce it to $43 to encourage people to not fight the ticket. Fortunately this lot has been torn down but the damage has been done and other private lots are following suit. Every year the Sand Sculpture competition in November and the Kite Festival in January bring back the festival crowds I remember from decades ago. In between times there is just an overpriced resort town as high end luxury hotels and corporate owned tourist trap store chains slowly replace the quaint little motels and local owned shops that gave the area its unique flavor. You can still find some of the Treasure Island spirit but you have to look hard.

Sunshine Beach is more residential than commercial, and home to everything from quaint beach cottages to Key West-styled three-story homes, although there are some of the smaller motels from the 50's and 60's in these neighborhoods. Here you will find dunes of sea oats lining the beach with walkovers providing access. Sunshine Beach does not have 1 big beach access parking lot but a bunch of small ones, which makes finding parking a bit more of a tedious task. The biggest parking lot is off Kingfish Drive with 28 spaces by Crabby's on the Pass, formerly JP Gators on the Pass. Crabby's on the Pass has bathrooms but no showers. The Kingfish Drive lot is across the street from Sunshine Beach but there is a walkway under John's Pass Bridge that you can take along John's Pass and the rocky jetty. There's a little fishing pier on the north end of the beach and lots of people fish on the pier or on the John's Pass side. Smaller Beach Park lots do not have bathrooms or showers and include the Ibis Lot off 121st Avenue & Gulf Boulevard with 19 spaces, Off 124th Avenue street parking with 17 spaces, at the White Egret Lot off 126th Avenue with 12 spaces, off 127th Ave end-street with 6 spaces. If you're at the 121st Ave parking lot, Sunset Vista Beachfront rentals next door has bathrooms, a shower, and a beach bar but I'm not sure if they welcome visitors. I assume anyone that is a customer willing to buy a drink can use the showers or bathrooms. Sunshine beach goes on for about 7 blocks, starting just south of the John's Pass Bridge. The north end of the island features a concrete walkway dotted with benches along the rocky pass, leading to a jetty in the Gulf of Mexico. A few Australian Pines make for a shady stroll along the walkway, which is a prime spot for watching boats go to and fro through John's Pass. The sand is softer and deeper here, but the expanse is much narrower, making it easier to schlep your gear out to the water. It's a much less populated stretch of beach, more residential than commercial, so you'll see more couples and retirees than families with small children or teenagers. Difficulty of parking, absence of showers, and absence or bathrooms unless you park near a business makes this beach lose stars, but otherwise it's a nice peaceful beach with tons of boats passing by to see.
