I honestly can't say enough good things about Sunset Garage. They are a very busy garage, so I do recommend if it is at all possible and you know that your car will need a service to book ahead of time. That being said, they are one of the most reputable garages in San Diego. I say this because personally, I have taken four years of auto mechanics training through adult education here in San Diego and worked on many of my older cars myself. I know what my car does and doesn't need and I don't appreciate being jacked around by additional services being pushed at me when I know that I don't need to do that for the vehicle. You will never have that experience at Sunset Garage. The crew there will recommend exactly what you need and will be honest with you about what it costs and if additional costs incur, you can rest assured it is because it is what the car needed. That's a huge thing to rely on at a garage, and you will rarely ever get that at a dealership. Not to mention, that the garage also specializes in many years and models of vehicles. I know of more than a few people who take their classic cars there for service. Finally, our Barrio Logan grassroots feral and community cat rescue owes a huge debt of gratitude to Sunset Garage. Most recently, I had to have my 2006 Honda CRV serviced for an oil leak that I could not find on my own and even though they were incredibly busy they knew I had a charity event that I had to drive all of the merchandise to to sell to raise monies for the cats and kittens care and somehow they made that happen , I don't know how they made that happen but I will always be grateful to them for this. Sunset Garage is great. I've only dealt with Johnny and a woman on the phone, but I suspect they are all as friendly and knowledgeable. I have older cars (2007 Honda Odyssey and 2014 Subaru) and Johnny breaks things down into categories of "urgent", "nice to have" and everything in between. He gives free estimates that are spot on and compare favorably with other mechanics. I was particularly impressed recently when I brought in my Subaru for some work and mentioned "hey, fender popped out due to minor collision backing into a wall. Do what you can and bill me.". He popped it back in and said "no charge". I never trust reviews that are 100% glowing so I'll say something negative.... He's gotten popular so it can be hard to get your car in the very same day. I live near Lakeside and a lot of the shops weren't really interested in working on my brakes for my 59 Cadillac. I stumbled upon sunset garage from a few friends and Sunset Garage went beyond my expectations!! They are one of the nicest couples and honest. Johnny and Chanda took great care of my classic and were very thorough ,honest while taking the time to explain what was needed (new master cylinder rusted / needed to be rebuilt) and what was still good (most brake lines still in great shape). Sunset Garage has really gone downhill these days. Are used to work there when Woody was there for years. And he would help anybody in need as a courtesy to help you get by. Well times have changed I recently went there with a car that needed five minutes of attention so I can drive safely. The new owner flat out said no I offered him money he said no offer to write up a ticket he said he didn't have time so I had to get my car back to my house in Ocean Beach and get a rental car. we are from out of town. we got into our car to go home and our car wouldn't start. we felt it was the battery but a jump didn't work either. so I called Sunset Garage. Johnny was not only able to get to our car but was able to do it right away. turns out it was the battery and he was able to explain some things about the battery, where we had purchased it, and how it impacted the battery life. so not only did he get us in right away, he also showed us what was going on. he went above and beyond and did so with such a friendly positive attitude. I cannot speak highly enough of this facility. I was in a small fender-bender a few weeks ago that completely dented in my left fender, dented my tire rim, left me with a flat tire, and dented in my left driver's door. I was fortunate to be able to drive the car after replacing it with my spare. I checked out a few areas for estimates with a photo of my car. I knew that I wouldn't be able to receive an exact estimate without an actual inspection, but I didn't have the option to drive my car around in the state that it was in. I went into Sunset Garage and showed Jonny and his wife a photo of my car. He looked at it, discussed what potential damage that could've been done, gave me an estimate, and answered my questions. He was not in the slightest bit pushy for me to take my car there. He was very direct and forward in his response to my questions. I had checked out a few places before this one and felt really comfortable with our initial consultation. I took my car back there the same day. He looked at it and called me back with a price that nearly matched the estimate. He gave me an EXTRAORDINARY deal. My dad and boyfriend said the same thing. Jonny went out of his way to search for a replacement in junk yards that were probably better than before it went in. He fixed it in 1-2 days and had it back to me in neat condition. I have been to many auto/mechanic places for oil changes, batteries, etc. and I will hands-down say that this is probably one of the most trustworthy places that I've been. Have nothing but good things to say about this mom and pop garage and would consider them a staple of the community. Very down to earth folks that won't nickel and dime customers, and they provide quick and quality service. For reference, the amount I would have paid for a synthetic oil change and tire rotation (plus inspections) would have easily been 40% more expensive through a dealer compared to Sunset Garage. Would recommend making an appointment, but it appeared to me they take walk-ins. They are busy though so don't be surprised if you don't make an appointment and they just can't get to your car in time. So I went to Auto Zone late on a Sunday to replace a broken tail light. As I was doing that, I noticed A LOT of coolant leaking from under my van. I panicked because it was a Sunday and I needed my van by Wednesday. Johnny's shop, Sunset Garage, was a stone's throw from Auto Zone so I went there. Before I even got inside the office, the owners greeted me, immediately got under the van to see the problem, diagnosed it, and gave me a ball park price. Then he added some water to replace the lost coolant, which was enough to get me home safely. Then Johnny said I could bring it in at 9 am tomorrow morning and he'd have it done that same day! The craziest part is they weren't even technically open when I rolled in. It was 4 pm on a Sunday. I just happened to roll in when they were painting their floors! And they STILL helped me, free of charge!! I was blown away! I've literally never had an experience like that with a shop. Other shops are almost never willing to give you a ball park until their mechanic has had a chance to look at it, and you're stuck there. And it's very rare that a shop that's any good can get you in and out with that short of notice, let alone a free diagnosis! Well, Johnny and his crew not only lived up to their word, but they did it for $80 cheaper than expected! I got my van back the same day! The new owners of Sunset Garage are incredible. My car was leaking fluid from the transmission, the front struts were shot, and the air conditioning electrical panel was dead. My car had some vibrations and the shop was closed, Jonny was kind enough to let me come to the shop anyway so he could take a look. He hooked up the scanner to my car free of charge and read the fault codes (which most shops will charge for that diagnostic service). He told me exactly why the engine was vibrating, identified an additional issue regarding my radiator hose, he gave me a quote and the next day did an absolute fantastic job fixing everything!
