My car had some vibrations and the shop was closed, Jonny was kind enough to let me come to the shop anyway so he could take a look. He hooked up the scanner to my car free of charge and read the fault codes (which most shops will charge for that diagnostic service). He told me exactly why the engine was vibrating, identified an additional issue regarding my radiator hose, he gave me a quote and the next day did an absolute fantastic job fixing everything! My cars running great. I have nothing bad to say about Woody and appreciate his years of good service, but Jonny may have ratcheted up the customer service from good to great. read more

I always go here for my SMOG test. Because they are not a "test-only" station, they could reattach this hose so that my car could pass the smog test. If I had gone to a test-only station, they would have failed my car, and I would have spent all day and more money to complete a 30 second fix. Let's hope the Westy passes smog tomorrow! read more

Great honest Garage! I needed my rack and pinion replaced, the steering rack on my truck. I already knew about how much it should cost. I called the shop and Woody answered, without hesitation he gave me the price over the phone, which was exactly what it should cost. I brought my truck and part I purchased over, and in a few hours he called me back that it was finished! Came back, paid exactly what he said it was, and they even boxed up the old part so I could ship it back and get my core refund! Will definitely use this garage again! read more

Worse service and professionalism I have ever seen from any business. I got a brake job here and the following week went up north to visit my family. Back driver side brakes locked down on the disc. Turms out I needed a whole new brake job again and now a new master cylinder because of the work Sunset did. I went back to explain what happen the owner laughed at me and said not their fault. Two brake jobs in one week. Master cylinder was fine before Sunset Garage worked on my car. I dont believe in coindence. They dont care about your safety nor their work. I can't say enough about how good it feels to have a mechanic that you can trust. I've been going to Woody over at Sunset for a decade now. Every now and again, I have to go elsewhere because I'm too far away. I ALWAYS regret it. Woody is a straight shooter and always goes out of his way to do an excellent job. Yesterday, I drove 12 miles just to go to him after a failed smog test. I needed to go to someone I trusted because I felt I was being cheated at California Smog Test Station over on Lincoln (DON"T EVER EVER GO THERE!!). Woody got me in and out right away and it turns out the car was just fine and dandy. 6 years ago I almost bought an old Nova. I brought it to him to get his opinion. I told him, if it's a lemon you stand to make a lot of money off of me. He told me that he couldn't in good conscience recommend it. He is a mechanic with morals and scruples. How priceless is that!! If I moved to Alaska, I'd still drive to OB to go see Woody. I'm no sucker, and am often pessimistic to a fault, so me giving a glowing review should be taken very seriously. I have found a lack of professionalism and poor customer service, as well as unreliable quality of work to be apparent at Sunset Garage. I am disappointed by the way they handle customer care concerns. I recommend being cautious if you choose to do business at this garage. The reason I am giving Sunset Garage a poor review is because of the way they handled an issue with my car. Brough it in to be repaired, and was happy that they fixed the issue within a days wait. Was disappointed that the issue returned about 2 weeks later. When I contacted the representative at the garage, Woody, to explain what had happened and voice my concern, he said he couldn't guarantee they could fix the problem. Started rattling off a series of other things they could repair. I asked if I could make an appointment to have my car looked at, and he said they do not offer appointments and went further to say he found it odd that I would ask. read more

I brought my car in for an over-all check specifically asking for my windows to be looked at. (One did not roll down all the way and the other not at all) Upon my request, Woody called before doing any work, saying he had fixed the window and "it was an easy fix so I would not be charged". He also recommended a new steering pump, which I agreed to, and we agreed I would come back later to replace 3 motor mounts. Upon picking up my car, I rolled down the window to find that it was making a horrendous scraping sound it had not been making before. It also had new scratch marks on the window and a chip in the glass that were not there before. I called Woody the next day and he told me to bring it in right away. When I arrived at the shop, I spoke with the mechanic who worked on the car and he acknowledged the chip but denied working on the window and said I needed to deal with Woody. Woody's story has now changed. He now says he or his mechanics did not touch the windows at all during the service. Even though I requested work on the windows and he said the day prior that he did work on the windows but it was "free of charge". He made excuses about what must have caused the sound and if I wanted the window fixed, I would have to pay full price. When asked about the chip in the glass, he simply said "I can't help you.". He turned around while I was speaking to him, walked away shaking his head, went into his office, and shut the door. I am so disappointed because I have heard good things about the honest work that Sunset Garage and thought I had found my new local spot. I do not understand why i did not have the same experience but I would not recommend this place to anyone due to the extreme lack of compassion and poor customer service. read more

A friend recommended me to this place because him and his dad have been going here for years. I was skeptical at first because I seem to always get ripped off when it comes to my car because I don't know much about cars but this was the best experience I have had with an auto shop in San Diego since I've moved here. I needed to fix something with my power steering and was quoted $100 and about two hours of labor. I was surprised when they called me only an hour later and only charged me $42. This review is a bit late. About a month ago I was leaving work and my car started making some weird noises going down the 163 on my way home to OB. It was a weird chugging noise and I had no idea what it could be. I chugged my car into OB and went straight to Sunset Garage (first time here) Seeing as how it was a Thursday between 3-4 I knew I would not be getting my car back today and unfortunately would not have transportation to work the next day. Imagine my surprise when I was offered a FREE loaner car! I have never had a garage offer me a free loaner car. Turns out a spark plug blew and did some damage in my engine. It was all fixed up by Friday evening. With parts and labor it came to $557 which of course hurt my wallet but not as bad as I feared. Will definitely be using Sunset Garage again! read more

When I returned to get my car, jerry -I believe his name was- told me it was good to go and had replaced my windshield wipers for free and filled all my tires. Woody is the absolute BEST!! I was having trouble with my car stalling and not starting, everyone told me it was the battery. I brought it to Woody to have it replaced and after he ran some tests turns out it was my computer. Instead of charging me for unnecessary work, he sent me to my dealership. I randomly came here after my car was having stalling issues and needed for it to be checked out ASAP. Luckily my car was parked right across the street from the night before so it seemed like the best option. Leigh helped me out and went above and beyond to not only have a look at my car but informed me on information that saved me hundreds of dollars, along with providing phone numbers and information on what I needed to do next. He knew what he was doing, was very friendly and kept me informed about everything plain and simple. I was parked at a 2 hour spot afterwards while I was waiting for a tow truck and he was even so kind to call me and let me know that I was in a 2 hour spot. We wanted to support our local mechanic so we went over to Sunset Garage for an oil change. We returned the next day to a bill for $89 and when I asked the guy about it he said, " Ok I will take off the windshield wipers." Lowering our bill by $15 dollars. Mind you we did not ask for new windshield wipers, or whatever else he decided to do to our truck. Then he said, "As long as you don't come back." I work for a repair company and I can never imagine saying that to a customer. So much for the local guy. I went to Sunset Garage because the trunk of my car wouldn't close. I had originally gone to another garage in the area, and they estimated the part needed would take about 4 days to arrive. Since I was about to embark on a 2,600 mile drive across country, I didn't have 4 days to wait. So, I decided to see what Sunset Garage had to say. I lived in walking distance from the garage, so it was convenient for me to drop my car off, as I could just walk home. For those who don't have the luxury of living so close, Sunset Garage provides a rental car free of charge. Shortly after, I received a call from Sunset saying that they were able to get the part and could fix my car the same day. Awesome! My new trunk latch worked perfectly. Because I was so impressed with their speeding service and good quality of work, I brought my car in the next day for an oil change and comprehensive exam. During the exam, it was discovered that a few things on my car needed to be fixed to ensure my cross country journey would be safe. The mechanic explained the things that absolutely needed to be fixed, and the things that could wait until after my trip. The services were priced fairly and Sunset Garage did a great job on my car. I can safely say that my 2001 Honda Civic was able to make it all the way to New York with no problems. I highly recommend this garage to anyone looking for quality car repair. read more

These guys are shady! I have a few extremely minor things to be done on my BMW, swapping out some bulbs and screwing on a roof rack with 4 screws. 20 minutes of labor at a lazy pace. The old guy at the desk told me they were 84 dollars an hour and it may take up to 2 hours. I said I would have no problem paying a full hour for 20 minutes of labor and he angrily said "then I won't do it." I have no doubt his intention was to extort me and stretch the work out over an hour to charge more. read more

I heard a loud clicking noise and brought it in to get checked, they also did my oil change, checked all the fluids and rotated my tires for a reasonable price :) Spending money on your car is the last thing anyone wants to do. However they were very helpful. Even helped me with a payment plan :) I also called my family mechanic that lives out of town and he said that seems like a great deal. I've seen this place in business for years and thought they were part of the community they serve but that wasn't the case recently. I wasn't there for there auto service, I stopped in on my way to another local business, Ocean Beach Bar & Grill, but my 10 year old grandson needed to pee as we were driving and they were the first open biz we came upon. I asked the person behind the counter, a sad looking middle aged dude, if my grandson could take a quick pee and before I could finish my sentence he said absolutely not. Either this guy is racist, doesn't like kids or is just so insecure about himself that he's unable to have compassion of a simple request. Sunset Garage practices poor advertising practices by blanketing neighborhoods with unwanted promotional flyers illegally placed on vehicles. These flyers often end up on the ground and become part of the pollution problem already so prevalent at the beaches. Further, the distributors of these flyers have been observed trying to open car doors as they walked up and down the street. Our community does not tolerate such illegal and environmentally-damaging promotions because it also provides distributors an opportunity to "case" vehicles and properties. Do Not support businesses like Sunset Garage that show so little respect for their community and environment. read more

Just had a very bad experience with I think is name was Woody. He is the person you deal with before getting the work done at Sunset Garage. I had talked to him about a problem I was having with the lights on my truck and asked if I could explain the problem to the person who would be working on it. Woody said bring the car in the next day at 9am when the mechanic would be there. I get there at 9am the next day and asked to talk to the mechanic who I'm told is busy. I wait till 9:30 and ask Woody can I just speak to the mechanic for 5 minutes and Woody just goes off the hook crazy and says he doesn't want to do the work. Very umprofessional ! I lived in Ocean Beach 3 years ago and regularly took my car into Sunset Garage. It is a 2006 BMW and a lot of places charge a ton of money to do anything on these cars. An oil change at the dealer is $250, anyhow, they are honest, their prices are reasonable and service is outstanding. I went in today because the plastic under my car got damage and I had zipped tied it back on and that was a fail. Anyhow, stopped by asked if we put it on the lift and take it a look, they did just that and fixed it.....and didn't charge me. Absolutely outstanding always!!!!! read more

While looking for a mechanic to repair my Honda I bought through carmax I was calling around OB to find someone to help. The first time I called Sunset they said they had never heard of maxcare and didn't think they could help. So I called Carmax and they informed me any mechanic who is ASC certified can take maxcare. After calling every other mechanic in ob with no luck I noticed online that sunset is ASC certified, so I called back and explained what maxcare was in hopes that they could help but they guy I spoke with was an absolute jerk! He gave me no reason why they wouldn't help me and when I tried explaining the maxcare to him he said "have a nice day" and hung up! I was having a really bad day and a little kindness would have gone a long way. So much for staying local! read more
