We ONLY stayed here because our friends were staying here (timeshare) and we wanted to stay in the same resort as them. My husband and I were already mentally preparing about our arrival and how we would deny any type of interaction that had to do with going to a timeshare meeting (we have gone through that before.) BUT they did let us know on arrival that since we had bought our package through Expedia we didn't have to attend the time share meeting but we were more than welcome to go to one (sigh of relief.) Since we got there before check in time we decided to eat/wait at Capriccio (one of their 2 restaurants) but to our disbelief we werent allowed to because we weren't "members" so we had to Wait until later when it was opened to everyone (our friends were already there so we just went to their room.) We were there for 7 days and we had a great time. We ate at the Aquario restaurant for breakfast and dinner, in the morning we always had Guadalupe, he's super nice and attentive, always making sure we had everything we needed. I enjoyed their activities especially water volleyball (never in my life have I done any activities in a resort because I am shy) but Angel was always trying to get everyone by the Pool to do activities, he interacted well with everyone, I've never had so much fun hanging out by the Pool! Cesar, Marios, Isaias and Carlos learned our favorite drinks by the second day we were there. They were all supper attentive and such hard Workers!! My husband and I always looked forward for the night shows and we didn't know what to expect since this was a smaller resort, WELL they put amazing shows, I would recommend attending them, 2030 pm every night in their outside theater! Since we bought our package through Expedia we didn't have a choice to choose our room (we usually do front ocean view, but I think they might only be given to timeshares) well we had a semi view of the Laguna in the back but honestly we didn't care because we were always outside and our room was pretty big!! I love that they have a grill outside with the best hamburgers, nachos,fruit and ice cream!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! We had the all inclusive package so we were able to eat eat and eat, including ceviche, never in my life have I stayed in a resort where you can just keep ordering ceviche!!!! Con: out of the 7 days we stayed there, we only went in the ocean 2 days because there was a lot of seaweed, which is why we went to the Pool a Lot, but the seaweed is all over Cancun not just in this area. Overall I had so much fun!! TIP: before we travel to Mexico we always make sure we get $100, in 1 dollar bills and use that as tipping money, a dollar goes along way in Mexico, and employees are such hard workers catering to us! read more

The only reason why this place gets 2 stars is because the front desk worker Jesus was incredibly helpful. Honestly went out of his way to make sure we didn't over pay for anything and ensure our comfort. Other than that the resort itself is crap, crappy food, crappy drinks and an outdated setting. I cannot stress enough how bad, not poor, but BAD the food was!! We tried all 3 restaurants and room service, just to be left incredibly disappointed. This is an ALL INCLUSIVE RESORT, which means you are counting on the food and drinks to be good. Not here!! Everything was so bad, we survived on bread, beer, and eating elsewhere! As for the resort, it was average at best. Some of the staff was nice and accomdating, while others seemed disinterested and put out. We actually thought about shortening our trip all together. FOOD(2): Hard to give this Hotel a 5 star review when the food is trash! As an American traveling, I am here to tell you food matters! !! The food here is a solid 2 on a 10 point scale. Being part of the Sunset "family" you are allowed to travel to the other properties. Hands Down Sunset Marina has the best food. Unfortunately, having to get up catch a shuttle, and get breakfast in a timely manner is very inconvenient. But that's what I did to have an edible meal. Wound up staying my days there when I did that which meant I only slept at my hotel. Entertainment(4): POOR! I've traveled to many countries and most countries have on-site discos... I guess since I'm near downtown they decided that none of these hotels should have a true disco. Poor thinking. Most of the bars on the strip run ftom about $20+for entry. Some $30 with open bar BUT WHO WANTS TO PAY THAT NIGHTLY??? THERE was an old couple about 65 years old who was the entertainment. I understand I'm in Cancun, a Mexican country but 98% of the music being Spanish was draining. I'm not a uppity person demanding 5 Star treatment at a 3/3.5 star hotel. But gahdamn! I'm still here. I don't even know where to begin!! We had our honeymoon here and it was terrible. The first room we had looked like a room stuck in the 90s. It was so old that they don't even have a picture of it on their website. Our ac wasn't working and it took them 3 hours to swap a room. Our clothes were soaked from the broken ac. The next room wasn't any better we dealt with it until the morning...we bought it to the managers attention in the morning and he showed us rooms for two hours claiming there was nothing better...Each room had visible mold and had the noise of construction. I was sick every day because of the black mold and the front desk said it's normal and that they are immune to the mold. No solution whatsoever!!! The food was DISGUSTING!!!! Royal Sunset/Promotora Cancunclubs Please be aware of this terrible timeshare called Royal Sunset Group. We were taken advantage while we were on vacation in Cancun, Mexico. The salesman--a so call "expert" -- is deceiving regular people like ourselves. We fell into their trap, they rush and pressured us to make decision on the spot. We bought the timeshare back on October 18th, 2004. After many years. we never used it. The salesmen explicitly told us that Royal Sunset could buy back the timeshare if we no longer wanted to use it. However, every time I tried to sell it back, there was always an issue with Sunset Group. One too many storms occurred to the resort, yet members were still expected to pay the fees. The timeshare was paid off years ago and we still are required to pay the maintenance fee and any remolding of furniture every time the Sunset update their units. There was the constant verbal threat to pay or destroy our credits. Please, for those that read this message please be wary of this company and do not fall for this trap. Once you sign, you are in there for 50 years and at my age, that is close to 90 years old or older. Members incomes are bound to change and retirement check is ONLY for necessities and medical bills. We traveled to Cancun in January 2019. It was our first time in Cancun and the weather was perfect and beaches are beautiful. We checked in and were right away introduced to our concierge Diana K. She was very friendly lady who gave us some information about the resort. She explained that we had to go to a timeshare presentation and said it would only be a couple of hours. We would be finished by 12-12:30. Once we were finished we went to change and enjoyed the rest of our day at the beach. The following day we booked our excursions to see Xcaret, Chicenitza and Isla Mujeres. Knowing the information that Diana gave us we booked everything making sure we would be committed to the time share presentation. The day we had to go to the time share presentation we were greeted by Jesus from concierge. He was very nice and friendly and gave us some information. We didn't know that we would be going to playa Del Carmen and wouldn't be back by 2:30-3:00pm. Right away we let them know that we booked an excursion and were told we would be done by 12:30. Jesus called the manager of the concierge who was named Maya. Maya came in with a bad attitude and argued with us about the time. She stated that we had to go or we would pay some kind of penalty. She didn't help the situation and egged us on. I was very disappointed being in customer service and a manager myself on how maya handled us. She said that we could be done by 1 but that our shuttle wouldn't bring us back until 2:30-3:00. It's also a 45 minute drive. We asked if we could take a taxi and she said that they wouldn't cover which we were fine with since we didn't want to lose on our excursion. Maya wanted us to sign a blank piece of paper stating we wouldn't hold the resort liable for the taxi ride. I told them I refused to sign a blank piece of paper and was very disappointed in their customer service. Overall the resort is 3 star quality and that's only because of the location of the hotel. Right on the beach and walking distance to the downtown club scene. The food wasn't too good for being all inclusive. I enjoyed the frozen drinks on the beach and at the pool. I strongly recommend to stay somewhere where the staff most especially the concierge treat their guests with respect and are more well informed. When your on vacation the last thing you want is the manager of the concierge trying to belittle you in the hotel lobby. I hope Maya will learn from her mistakes because she has lost a customer and I know many people who travel. Sunset Royal will not be getting any referrals from me. read more

So I stayed at this resort from Jan. 2-8th! The very first night my boyfriend and I had bites all on our backs. We ended up going to the receptionist to get a room change and they ended up putting us in to a room with another door attached to it that leads to the next room (say bye bye to privacy). Then I found Chile inside my hair bag where I keep my hair accessories . I had the receptionist report it. The rest of the stay went well after that. I wish the food menu would change everyday rather than the same. The drinks are good at the bar! I give the entire hotel a 2.5 only because nothing was really resolved with our room. We went for 8 days with my family and had a great time at the resort, unfortunately the ocean had a lot of see weeds but the sand was still very nice. My recommendations, if you stay here make sure you do it in the 1 BR suite which easily sleeps 4 and it is large and comfortable. I know it costs more but you will enjoy it better than the small suite room. Also my recommendation for the hotel is to have some fans or sometime type of cold air installed outside where you have your nightly shows. It can het extremely hot and not make you enjoy the show and dinner. Food was good but could be better. Perfect Location for Hotel near shops and nightlife Overall I would recommend this Hotel. The bar tender our house cleaning staff , the people who served us in the restaurants and the people at the front desk were all wonderful. We are going back in a week with 8 of our family members. I would give this place a zero if I were able to. Staff is nice and friendly and as attentive as you need. This is why they get a star. The place is incredibly old and worn down. The rooms are not quality at all. My sliding door banged all night for the wind. Food Is below average even for Mexico. Pool has a slim on the tiles that creeps me out. Only 1 bar to sit at and there are 8 seats. I want to finish this abbreviated review by saying this was a free trip here and with that said I was highly disappointed with the free trip here. Rephrase....... if you are on a strict budget it might be ok but comparison shopping you still spend far too much to be here. I would not spend a dollar to stay here. We booked at the Sunset Royal Hotel for a short trip. When we arrived, we were told by the front desk that the hotel knowingly overbooked rooms and no room was available for us. We were given the option to stay at one of their other affiliated hotels, including Ocean Spa or Sunset Marina. Ocean Spa is 10 min away and doesn't have the same beach views and amenities. The Marina hotel is not beachfront. Employees at both the Sunset Royal and Ocean Spa admitted that this happens frequently. We booked through Expedia. An employee at the Sunset Royal stated that Expedia is aware of the overbooking scam. I assume they overbook to obtain business for all the hotels in the group. Do not book with the Sunset Hotel! Your room is not guaranteed. read more

The beach at this resort is the best in all of Cancun. The staff is great, there are many activities at the pool for adults and for the kids. Our waiter on the beach, Alberto made our entire trip amazing. We would come back to this resort simply for the wonderful service Alberto gave us as we relaxed on the beach. We enjoyed many great drinks and food and he remembered us and our orders each day. Overall, laying on this picturesque beach of this resort was what made our trip the most memorable. I would have given this place 3 stars if it wasn't for my concierge guy. But he ruined our experience. The roof leaked entire trip we were here when it rained. It wasn't a dripping leak, it was like it was raining inside the hotel. There was a cockroach we saw on the hallway. Check-in was ok. But, the concierge or Time-share guys who help you explain the resort amenities don't give a rats-ass about you unless they want to sell you something. I had to ask 4 times to put my dinner reservation in and he didn't do it. It was a burden every time we went to dinner and we had to wait or cancel. While I'm not staying here as my hotel of rest, it is a part of my all expenses paid vacation. We are presently on a gorgeous beach and have been treated with phenomenal service of drinks and food from Pedro. Pedro is the best. He busts his butt! He has made our experience here the absolute best. Thanks to Pedro we will be back tomorrow! Beautiful atrium of hotel. Clean. Many many children in the pool is my only drawback. We requested to be changed to another room and we were. The second room was better, but still nothing impressive. The balcony doors get jammed and it's pretty annoying. Things are rusty and just old. When we get to our room it's a view of a roof top with two double beds I then go down to the desk and request to speak to the manager who tells me if I buy a time share I can have a king bed ask I pay for a king bed with ocean veiw but can not get what I paid for unless I purchase a time share! To top it off the food is less than ok! The only plus to this establishment I the bell man who was very kind! I would never ever recommend this place to anyone! Save your money and go to sun palace! I really hate to one star this resort but the whole time share B.S. has left a sour taste in my mouth. You get suckered into a sales pitch and they don't give up. Pretty persistent and obviously, they do a good job as after hours of not taking No for an answer, we walked away with one. Sounds pretty amazing, if you have the time and money to use it a lot. With kids and other priorities, it's a huge waste of money. The location is beautiful, the staff is amazing but I want nothing to do with this place ever again! They sell you and promise they will give you the option to buy it back or buy you out if you have no use for it down the road. We have had financial strains pop up and have contacted them a few times. We get a run around. They are doing renovations and aren't buying back till 2019, then 2020 and now 2022. We were stupid for buying into it, but I will never recommend anyone come here and I want nothing to do with this place. It's such a shame as we had a great time but as I said, it's left a sour taste in my mouth and our happy memories are tainted. read more

We say no cheese they say extra cheese. It's ridiculous. They put us in the wrong room for 3 days. We finally had to leave to another resort! Don't think the manager will help either. Apparently he was in a meeting 3 days all day bc every time we asked for him he was MIA. This place is a joke and should be shut down. The other review was right they do discriminate. the big plus about this place is the service. we checked in and went to our room and I did not like the view from the 2nd floor and Ivan at the front desk got me an amazing upgrade for only $120 for the stay. Well worth it. The food is pretty good. Keep in mind I knew coming here that this was not a ritz or JW marriott. The bellmen Oscar and Jesus took care of everything i needed. The worst holiday experience! The room that we were given was overlooking a street and looked like a prison cell. We were told that the rooms that were shown on photos were for timeshare owners only. All inclusive turned out not to be all inclusive after all - we were asked to pay for our dinner. The beach is quite disappointing in that part of Zona Hotelera. The food is horrible, the drinks are horrible, unless you go to the bar in the lobby and ask for top shelf. The entertainment is really bad. The towels are hard and the rooms are outdated. First of all this resort is laid out like an Embassy Suite. All the rooms open to a main atrium that overlooks the buffet down below. And the corridors smell like fish and it's not air conditioned. The buffet restaurant is not air confirmed and the elevators are not air confirmed. The resort is old and not well kept. I think Rcii misleads their members and should let people know that is not what advertised. I have owned at Royal holiday club for 25 years and it was 100 percent better than this resort. When I can on Monday I'm gong to call Rcii and let them know. There's construction right next door and cannot swim in ocean because of seaweed and algae. Also make sure you don't get room 608. It overlooks the construction next door and you get to hear the outdoor shows every night from 8 to 10 pm. read more

Stayed here from April 1-4 for my best friends bachelorette party and I cannot say enough good things about this place. It is not the biggest hotel along the hotel zone but if you want to be catered to and treated amazing then come to Sunset Royal! Everyone from the front desk to the bell boy to the bartenders were all super friendly and went out of there way to make sure all are needs were met. The hotel front desk upgraded our room and answered all our questions and told us what clubs were good to go to we actually met an awesome promoter through the hotel who took care of us our entire trip and hooked it up with bottle service. All the food was delicious and the waiters on our first night gave us champagne when he found out we were there for a bachelorette party. I would definitely recommend this place to anyone who will be visiting Cancun in the near future. They truly made it an amazing and unforgettable experience for us! read more

First time visit to Sunset Royal Beach Resort. The beach beautiful, the resort is a little dated, but has amazing beach views! Although they do a good job changing up the food at the buffet the menu at the restaurant doesn't change, need more variety. I must say that they do a great job keeping the resort and rooms clean. The people that work there however do make up for some of the drawbacks. On the beach Jose Iscas, Jorge Vargas, Miguel and Rigoberto went out of their way to make us feel like we welcomed, THANK YOU. Isalas at the snack bar was very friendly and did a very good job refilling our drinks and always with a smile! A big thank you to Victor, Eric, and Luis (bartender) at the buffet restaurant, you guys are great! Thanks for making us feel welcomed in your home! Jack on the entertainment team didn't forget our names each time we saw him he greeted us by name very thoughtful, names are extremely important to enhance guest satisfaction. Thank you Laura at the lobby bar for being so sweet, and always remembering what we liked to drink. I didn't get much interaction with Joaquina that cleaned the room, she did a great job and it the BEST towel animal maker I've ever seen, extremely talented!!
