Baha, owner and chief mechanic of Sunset Transmission, upheld a warranty by the previous owner of my car on a transmission. He went unbelievably above and beyond, from diagnosing the issue (unrelated to his initial install), and then recommending the most economical fix that would last the longest. Ultimately, Baha tore down and installed a brand new, much younger engine in the vehicle for a fraction of what parts would've cost. I initially had it towed there on a Thursday and by Tuesday I had the car back with the new engine. After there was an issue post-install and I brought it back, he spent days tearing down the transmission to diagnose the problem and was the fairest I could imagine in terms of his pricing. He did additional work while he had the car on the interior and he and his staff were superlative, even cleaning the car. The previous owner of my car had a great experience with Baha and that, astonishingly, continued through to me, tens of thousands of miles later. 5 stars -- highly recommended. 2002 Eurovan. read more

I am disabled and elderly. My oil light was on and I went to Sunset Transmission. I already had cans of oil in my car, but I couldn't stand and put the oil in my car. Mr. Lee, the owner, charged me $20 just to put the oil in my car. He took advantage of me. read more

I don't know if the service was great because I was also a AAA card holder but I really did enjoy my service at Sunset Transmission. The individual that helped me seemed to know his stuff and had excellent customer service. He even went out of his way twice (first, to stay open for me when my car originally overheated and was getting transported by a tow truck and secondly, when I had to return my rental car and get dropped off). After having a horrible experience with my previous mechanic which I openly shared with him, I felt that he was honest, fair (the charge did not seem outstanding), and timely (my car was ready the next day which helped me save on my rental). I thought that it was only a transmission place but the mechanic seems to know and work on more car problems beyond just transmissions. They run a great business. They did not charge me for a diagnostic. They found that my transmission could not be repaired, and while I sorted out a buyer they allowed for my car to remain at their shop for three days. They allowed for a WeBuyCars.com representative to inspect my vehicle and arrange for it to be towed away on the fourth day. No charge for using their shop as a parking spot for my dead vehicle for four days, just a handshake and a smile. Nobody wants to find themselves at a transmission repair shop, and certainly nobody likes hearing their car is as good as dead, but these folks were honest, understanding, and kind. I cannot recommend them based on their repair service since I did not actually receive any repairs, but they are straight-shooters who are not looking to nickel and dime you or extend themselves beyond their capabilities. read more

When I was in Los Angeles my 2002 Honda Van's D light was blinking (then stopped) and was worried that my transmission would be going out. Before him, I did call a few places, and they did keep telling me even if the light does not blink it is my transmission going bad, All these other places kept telling me they can test it by plugging the transmission to there computer even if the light was not blinking. I found Sunset Transmission on Yelp, and this establishment was about 1 mile away from where I was staying. Decided to bring it to him to look at before my drive back to San Francisco. When I arrived, the shop was already opened and walked in to be greeted by Baha. He walked with me to my van went through the checks even took out the dipstick to check and smell my transmission fluid (make sure there is no burnt smell). He said that he did not see anything wrong and cannot test it unless the light was blinking. He reassured me for the long drive back to SF and even as I type this out my transmission is still working fine. Thank you for your honesty and professionalism I sincerely appreciate it. read more

My mom brought our car in for a transmission issue after a recommendation. The whole situation ended up being a nightmare. They had the car for a week and after we picked up the car, our engine light turned on. We took it to a separate shop, and they told us it was the same problem we originally took it in for. Then we had to give it to them for an additional week after they said it was a "default part". It was a huge inconvenience and paying over $2,000, we expected more - especially for customer service. I logged in to yelp and was amazed at all the wonderful reviews here. Please believe them, my experience turned out the same as the other five star reviews here. The mechanics on Saturday were immediately able to diagnose the problem and send me on my way, (they found out it wasn't a problem with the transmission at all). The staff were friendly, knowledgeable and very helpful. Three words came to my mind after my visit...Excellent Customer Service. I rarely take the time to write reviews, but I was so pleased with Sunset Transmission, that I just had to take the time. I was so relieved to be rid of my 2002 Chevy Monte Carlos's transmission issues at a much lower price than quoted at the dealer or 3 other surrounding transmission shops.I took my car in a few months ago in May. I have to say I was a little intimidated going into an auto shop due to my lack of automotive knowledge, but I decided to take a leap of faith and went to Sunset Transmission (recommended to me by my classmate at SC.) Jose, the technician that worked on my car explained everything in simplified terms to me without dumbing me down. My car was ready by the time promised. Even better, I didn't have to take a day off from work or class because they are open Saturdays. Everyone at the shop was very friendly. As a side note, I had previously taken my car to the Chevy dealer with transmission issues. They claimed to have "fixed" my transmission, but it started making the same noise it had when I took it in. They checked it another time and they didn't fix the problem. Thank goodness for technicians like Jose at Sunset Transmission that not only found the problem (a broken transmission part) but resolved it. Big fan of these guys, and they didn't even work on my car. Warner drove around with me in my car for 15-20 minutes, just to fully diagnose what was wrong. We had a great conversation (college, kids, jobs, etc), and we got along very well. Nice guy. :) When we got back to the shop, Warner had one of his technicians run some tests based on what he had experienced in the car (massive slipping between gears), and I waited in the office with my girlfriend and some coffee Warner had offered. The technician came back, said a few words to Warner, and Warner said, "You should probably sit down." And then made the technician tell me the news, b/c he felt so bad about it. In the end, I had to get a completely new transmission, and I had owned my car for long enough that it was more financially beneficial to trade it in and get a new car. Warner and his guys were cool with this (he even liked driving my car so much that he asked for how much I'd sell it for, but I ended up trading it in), and they didn't charge me for their time. Which was probably an hour. So, that was awesome. Since I couldn't give them any of my money for their time, the best I can do is spread some good words about them. They're good people. read more

This shop was great to work with. One thing that I can't stand about most businesses is that they so, so, so rarely do things on time and as they said they would. This place did for me. They called when they said they would, they finished the work when they said they would, they charged what they said they would, and they fixed the problem. There was even a malfunction with the computer system in the car and they replaced it without charging me for the service or part. They referred me to a tow service that was similarly easy to work with, offered me water every time I was there, and just really didn't do anything wrong. read more

I was having car problems on a Friday late afternoon, when I was leaving work in Calabasas. I believed them to be a transmission issue based on the symptoms (car was jumping/stuttering when stalled at stoplights, brown transmission fluid), and called Sunnys after doing some quick research on service places. Sunny's is a mile from my house, and had great reviews. It was 5:30 and Sunnys closes at 6PM... so I called them, knowing it would take me 40mins to get there. They were very nice and said it was no problem, they'd stay a little late to take a look at my car. When I get there the whole team is still there with smiles on. Jose hopped in my car, and I jumped in the passenger seat. He listened to all the symptoms and my story, and drove the car around a bit. Unfortunately (of course!) the car wouldn't make the sound and was performing fine. We drove back to Sunny's and he advised me it was probably an engine issue and to take it to my mechanic. He checked the fluids and showed me how the fluid was in need of a change, but was NOT a symptom of a bad transmission, but just needed servicing. Another crew member noticed that my brakes squeeked and asked me the last time the pads had been changed, but it was due to new but cheaper break pads. They placed absolutely no pressure on me to get any service done, and were sweet the entire time even though I held them late. They didn't even charge me a dime for inspection, as they didn't find anything wrong with the car. They treated me like family! Although I havn't had an actual repair done here yet, I think this place is a jem! I'd recommend them to anyone needing transmission work done! read more

I brought my BMW in and after a couple of test drives and someone trying to read the computer they said I needed a rebuild and quoted me $3,000 with tax. I took it to AAMCO and it turned out to be a speed sensor which is only about 250 for parts and labor. Would have blown 3 thousand of my hard earned dollars if I took there advise. read more

Can't say enough positive things about this business! First rate service and quality. AAA approved them and I know why. First experience, 6 months ago, was a rebuild on my 2006 Kia. Car would not shift into all gears and was undriveable, so at 130k plus miles, I dropped the car off and signed the repair authorization. Got a call the next day to pick it up without a rebuild! . They trouble shot the transmission and found something had messed with the fluid and after a flush and fill the transmission is back to working perfectly! They could have just dropped the transmission and done the rebuild, who would have known? But I would have been out a lot of money. Second, 3 months ago, a rebuild of my 07 Volkswagen Rabbit. No lucky easy fix here, at 150k the transmission was shot. A few days and I was rollin again, car performed like new! Dropped the Rabbit yesterday for a light on the dash, not transmission related, and they took care of it right away! Great place if your car needs some mechanical work. Went in nervous I was going to have a very expensive transmission rebuild. Baha was very kind, helpful and gave it to me straight. He told me all the things that could be happening and what my options were. After looking at my car for a while they discovered it would be a very cheap speed sensor replacement. This transmission ship is top quality - I would recommend anyone who is seeking an honest and honorable mechanic to come here. After having a Toyota diagnosis of needing 4100.oo new transmission, I came here at the recommendation of my exceptional mechanic who has never led me astray. To begin with, they test drove my car to see if it was making any of the telltale sounds of having issues. He came back and said everything sounded good, then offered to clean the transmission fluid, still looking for possible issues. In the end, he went over everything, hoisted my car, and gave me a clean bill of health. Total cost was $150, which was exceptional given my readiness for a couple thousand dollar bill! I am super happy and super grateful that I went to this place and didn't trust the Toyota dealership to "diagnose" my car. I was nearly taken by pirates really. This is the best kind of mechanic.
