I have never seen ruder customer service! A very nice older Russian lady was asking the manager for a bag for a large item she was about to purchase, and he was very short with her. I spoke up to help her, and he was like "What? Are you with her?" When I explained politely that I was just trying to help, he started cussing at me and told me to get the "f**k out of his store." How is this place still in business?. When you walk in you're greeting with a vibe as you just walked into a strangers house with dog shit covered shoes on. I came in to get 4 keys made. Walk in the door and some dude at the counter is watching TV. I go over to the key station and he doesn't even acknowledge me. I ask if i can some keys made. There was a pause before he responded as I was obviously interrupting his show. After he got up and made the keys, the transaction was quite pleasant. He made them quickly and said to come back if there were any problems. One of the keys didn't work (have had this issue at Home Depot too) so I went back after work to get a new one. I just got there after they closed at 6pm. I would have figured they'd be open a little later than that. Oh well. The 3rd time I come back the same guy that made my keys said the key machine is broken. Come back in a few days. Grrrrr! On my 4th trip back (I live in the neighborhood thankfully), I walk in and I get the same "wtf do you want?" vibe. I kindly tell the guy behind the counter that i had some keys made and one didn't work. I proceed to show him the keys then comes a barrage of angry questions: Who made this?", "What was his name", "Do you have a description?", "When were these made?", "are you sure you're in the right store?", "How do you know it doesn't work?"...."Did the guy that made this have any distinct features?" Holy shit man, calm down. It's a $2 key. I said, "listen, i'm not trying to scam you. If it's an issue, I'll pay for a new key." Counter guy proceeds to get an older guy (maybe the manager or owner) and he examines the key. He shows me both keys and says "What's the difference between the two keys?". I said, "i dunno...". He goes, "NOTHING." Oh man, that pissed me off. The old dude proceeds to ask me the same questions as the other guy.."Did you try to shake it around?", "what kind of lock is it for?"....blah..blah.. Anyways, avoid this place. Horrible service. There are a few other hardware stores around to give your business to. Let these guys watch their daytime soaps in peace. read more

I'm a handyman and I shopped here several times, spending at least $200, when I was working with a client nearby. I live in Berkeley and never come to this side of the City so made a special trip to return a few items. I was told by the only employee in the store that he was unable to process a credit card return. It took several months to get back here and when I did, with receipt in hand and items that were unopened, I was rudely told I they wouldn't accept the returns. I'd even offered to make another purchase because when I was "greeted" as I entered the store, the employee complained that too many people were returning things that day. Every time I was in the store while working with that nearby client I encountered some sort of problem or rudeness. I will never be back. I'd rather drive across town. read more

These guys got everything! When i walked into the store i didn't realize how large it was from the outside. This place is HUGE! For a store on the avenues it's really big. On top of that everything i needed they had. I heard the previous owners were rude, but the new guys are incredible. I don't know their names but they really know their stuff. I have always been very impressed with this hardware store. The owner has always been extremely friendly and courteous. They have an extensive selection of washers, nuts, and bolts. Once when I needed a bolt but didn't know what size, he let me take some different sizes to try without paying, just asking me to return them and pay when I got back. On the occasions that I have needed to return something, I have never had a problem. I seldom need to return anything because they are quite knowledgeable and can usually direct me to exactly what I need, unlike Home Depot where it's a roll of the dice. These guys have a very impressive collection of hardware, with all sorts of glue, solvents, household hardware, hundreds of by-the-piece nuts and bolts, a massive Dremel tool collection, and a small collection of high quality tools. They stock a lot of USA-made tools. Now, it's not the pro-tool-fest of Center Hardware, nor the rock bottom prices of Lowe's, but you can count on these guys to do a good job. I've lived in the neighborhood for over ten years, always go to this True Value hardware store, and have always had a good experience. read more

Worst customer service ever, being so unhelpful, their business hours were wrong on Yelp, it shows they open until 7pm on Yelp, but they said they closed at 6pm. They should update their hours on Yelp. I went there a little before 6pm, but they turned off all the lights and refused to turn the lights back on. I need to get something really quickly, just a small part because our sink is leaking; it nearly takes them less than a min for the transaction to be done. But they refused to help and told me to step out of their door. They were just so rude. Even I explained to them it is urgent because our kitchen sink is leaking water. And After I walked back to my car, I saw them the two guys who worked there were still smoking outside of their store. Guess what, this tells what kind of people they are. They had a few mins to enjoy a cigarette outside of their store, then why were they not willing to spend just a couple of mins to help their customer getting what she needs in urgent. They don't care about their regular customers at all, we live down the block and whenever we need something we always go buy from them to support their business. We really want to like them and support them as our neighborhood hardware store, but they ruined that. We will go to the ACE down a few blocks instead where they have better customers service and longer business hours. read more

Everybody speaks good functional English but it's a study in evolving customer service. It needs improvement. The older guy (the Dad?) can be a jerk and defensive about maybe his lack of knowledge in certain areas. The tall, younger, slow-moving man helped me while on a personal call on his cell phone. When I first entered the store he was on his cell, making it hard to get his attention. Then later he couldn't focus during the purchase. He was still on his cell when I left. He also ended up selling me the wrong item. Though this may not have been completely his fault he probably could have prevented it with a simple question or some interest. The result is a wasted purchase and time. And a dissatisfied customer. There's metered parking on this block, even though it's way out there. But because of that it's easy to find non-metered parking nearby. Near an eggette place and Pollyanna's great ice cream. It takes up two storefronts since they knocked down the center wall, and the new store layout is bigger and roomier, with better light. It also is very clean. But minimize the cellphone chats while, tending the store, Slo-Mo. And act like you give a - - - -. I'll never go back. *** Nov. 8, 2010 Edit *** When I submitted this 8/10/09 I said I'd never go back to this place. Well, I did go back and I must say they've modernized. On this day the sales associate, instead of talking on the phone, was texting non-stop. My 2-star rating remains. There's a power tool rental place right up the block for DIY-ers. 4-8-2011 Went back again and this time they helped me -- no cells and no texting -- maybe because a different older guy was there? Nonetheless the 2 stars remain. Aah, the power of selling customers the wrong part while chatting with a buddy on a cellphone -- priceless. The only way you can return something here is if you ask Michael J Fox for the keys to his DeLorean, and go back in time to five minutes before you purchased it-- then *maybe* you won't get hassled. I've been coming to this place for over 10 years to buy small items, bolts, washers, the occasional roll of duct tape. Nothing major, and never again. Recently I bought a set of universal replacement shower faucet handles, and the set screws in them are defective, the threads are too narrow and the screws are frozen. (One screw in fact was flopping around the box and would not thread in.) After 10 minutes of trying it was obvious the handles were defective, so I boxed them back up. After less than a week I was able to get back to the store and was immediately A) accused of stripping the threads, and B) told I should have come back immediately to get a refund / exchange. (Never mind that TrueValue has a 30 day return policy, and never mind that I had the original box, the receipt and the handles were untouched.) The manager was the young bald guy there, and insisted on calling me 'bro' while he he spent 10 minutes trying to prove the set screws worked using a 3-in-1 screwdriver. They didn't, so he rudely told me to get a replacement set off the shelf, and proceeded to try to get those to work. Meanwhile the other counter person ate his lunch three feet away and chimed in that returns can only be done immediately, and that I should read 'the sign' near the counter-- which was tough to do, since there were about 20 signs there. (Again, TrueValue's corporate policy is 30 days exchange/return.) Finally, after he'd served other customers between attempts to get the screws to work, I asked again for a refund, pointing out that nobody has a one-week or less return policy, and after major grumbling he finally gave back my money. I then went up to Ace Hardware on 32nd and Noriega and had a pleasant transaction, paid less for better quality handles (Ace is also 30 day returns, stated clearly on the receipts) and am in business. I'm stunned at how rude the manager was and how ready they were to let long-term business walk for good. read more

I needed a flapper for my 15-yr-old Kohler toilet. There are lots of Kohler toilet models and even more flappers! The men at this True Value were very helpful, spent several minutes finding the right flapper for my toilet, and I will return there despite the fact that I live on the other side of GG Park, and it's not a convenient location for me. A-holes extraordinaire! Love being insulted and overcharged? Look no further! Guy follows you around like you're a thief and yet knows nothing about the products they sell. You work in a hardware store and don't know what toggle bolts are? Really? I returned a box of screws (with receipt) I had bought there and was asked why I was returning them. Me: "Because I found them elsewhere much cheaper." Guy:" Is a dollar that big a deal to you?" Me:"Shouldn't matter to you." At that point, he still hadn't started returning my money. It degenerated into him slamming my money on the counter, shoving his face at me, and shouting, "Have a nice day! Come back real soon!" Naturally, it is now my favorite store ever. I went in yesterday to buy a new toilet seat. I bought one which I assumed would be fine for $40. I got home and opened the package, I realized that the seat wasnt oval enough to cover the entire bowl so I called back 30 minutes after purchase to see if they had the oval ones and if I could exchange the item. I was told "no, since its opened we cannot take it back". Thanks guys, I was hoping to keep my money in the neighborhood and help out a local franchise owner but instead I will spend my money at a big corporate location that takes care of their customer. read more

Man, super surprised about these reviews. I went here about 2 years ago, and bought paint here and the guys were SUPER helpful. John helped me then, when I didn't get the color match I wanted (I'm picky) to swap it out for me, and even gave me a little discount for the hassle. I was in the neighborhood again so I made a point to cut keys there, and you know what he said, "if for any reason they don't work, come back and I'll make you a new set." He remembered my boyfriend at the time, and asked me how his daughter was...listen, people text and watch tv when you walk in because maybe business is slow. I am still shocked from my experience at this place several months ago. I walked into this den and was met with hostile eyes by a large man with a scar on his face who claimed to be the owner. I asked him where the paint was and he pointed in the direction. As I walked away I heard him say "stupid white bitch, doesn't know shit about paint." The experience got even worse when he told me that I didn't know how to paint and needed to hire a real man to do the job. I told him that I was not looking for help. He then told me that he had a "short temper" and that I was pissing him off. I was frightened by this exchange. This man is dangerous and clearly has mental health issues that he needs to address. I would not recommend anyone going to this store out of fear for their own safety. read more
