The dentist, Mark Kim, also used an electric scaler to aggressively scrape my healthy teeth and gums, damaging my enamel and dentin, especially near the gumline. I absolutely HATE going to the dentist. I've had pushy dentists try to sell me on every little thing there is to be sold. Insurance has always been an issue. Never good news when visiting. I was the type of person who was recommended to go every 2-3 months for a cleaning and I because of this, I hadn't been to one in a few years - avoidance issues at this point. How many cavities are they going to say I have this time? Deep cleaning? Probably. Root canal? Wouldn't be surprised. That's where Sunshine Dental comes in. My wife had been here before and swears that Dr. Kim doesn't seem to up-sell/ push for more work that need be done, just to get more money out of his patients. And upon going here for my first checkup in 5000 years, I can confirm she was right! Dr. Kim was extremely professional, knowledgeable, honest and to the point. He's very understanding to certain situations and explains things easily. He also breaks down how you can maximize your insurance (frequency of visits) to ensure that 1. You have a clear understanding of how the insurance will be utilized towards your visits and 2. How you can make the best financial decisions for yourself. This is extremely appreciated coming from someone who is in the finance industry. His assistant Dee was also very friendly and thorough with the cleaning! I met Dr Kim yesterday for the first time and had a very pleasant experience. My insurance provided the referral. I had x-rays, exam and cleaning. I found Dr Kim and staff polite, consultative and gentle. I was in and out in 90 minutes and left feeling it was the least traumatic dental visit I have had in my lifetime. I've been to a handful of other local dentists which always seem focused on all the things that could be improved or replaced and upgraded. In some cases hard sell tactics and comments that always left me feeling bad about my dental hygiene in general. Dr. Kim had a good, kind way of explaining options to maintain long term dental health. I would recommend this no nonsense dental office to anyone who would enjoy a non stressful consultation. This is not your fancy over the top high tech dental office! It's very basic, just one dentist and one hygienist. They don't over schedule patients so you're not waiting around to be seen. I've been going to this dental office for years and have just recently moved so I'm unable to use them anymore when I realized I've never left a review! Dr Kim is the most caring dentist I have ever been to! He's always constantly checking in on you during your exam to make sure you're not in any discomfort and he thoroughly explains everything he does so you're not just left sitting there wondering what the heck is happening. Honestly don't listen to any horrible reviews, clearly they're just salty because something didn't work out in their favor. Regardless, I hated the dentist since I was a little girl but now I don't mind going at all. Dr.kim goes through the steps and makes sure I'm never in pain or uncomfortable. I'm a college student so he's advised me the best plan for payments for my teeth. He's super caring of his patients and now I have my parents going as well. He's very honest and straight up. I found this Dental office from Yelp. I've been to couple other dental offices in Torrance in the past and the experience wasn't very good, probably that's why I hate to see dentist. However, this place somewhat change my perspective on dental office. Things I like about this place: Dr Kim is not pushy. He would explain to you details about your problem, recommend/explain options. Before he do anything on you, he had his staff check on your insurance to find out what's cover and what's not. Doctor and staffs have good manner. Office is clean and equipments are relatively new. They open on Saturday. It's easy to make appointment. I was looking for a new dentist and found this place through Yelp. Based on all the reviews (yes, I read them all) I decided to give this place a call. Another reason I called this place was because they were on a list that accepted my insurance. I initially contacted another dentist, but the receptionist was VERY rude. Desiree is an angel! haha she answered my questions regarding insurance, how to become a patient and appoint-booking very professionally and politely. My interaction with her was one reason I decided to give this place a try. Location is in a small plaza (I passed the first entrance) with a fair amount of parking. I didn't have a problem finding a spot. There is at least one spot reserved just for patients~ woo! First-time patients fill out some paperwork (2 pages fill, 2 pages sign). You're also handed informational sheets. My appointment started with x-rays. Quick and painless. I like how the girl did a little run to go push the button. Other places just take their time and walk. Next was: - consultation - recommendations (with explanations) - explaining me what he can see from the x-rays (cavities, potential cavities, etc) - noted all previous work on my teeth (it was like he was psychic! haha) - had me hold a mirror to show me what he sees - made a list of things he'd like to have done to my teeth (and he prioritized them) - teeth flossingcleaning Dr. Kim explained everything in detail! He also tolls me why he explains things-- which I like. After this visit to Dr. Kim... now I'm wondering the heck my last dentist(s) we're doing. it was like every visit I had a new cavity, but Dr. Kim noted ALL current cavities and potential cavities. He also stresses "no surprises" which I find very helpful. I honestly only wanted to come in for a cleaning and cavity fill (which actually needs to be root canal). But after my initial visit I do believe I have found my dentist! Update: had to be referred to a specialist and Desiree took care of everything from calling them to booking an appointment for me. It's been 2 months since this whole fiasco and I got 4 crowns for the price of his 2 crowns from another South Bay Dentist and it's been great. For the sake of not advertising another business on here, I will not name it, but feel free to PM me if you're interested. In addition to the original story (review), the new dentist told me that it sounded like this guy 100% removed the stronger bonding on purpose and messed up the procedure twice. Also LOL to the shill below me who updated her review so it has the 5 star showing as the latest (Rebecca). If that isn't a textbook definition of fake review I don't know what is. She updates her review 2 years after probably after a re-visit, and was probably paid off to update it. That or they know each other. He gives advice like a trustworthy friend, and talks to you in such a soothing and respectful tone. My boyfriend-at-the-time-and-now-husband referred me to Sunshine Dental when some of my old, crappy fillings started coming out and needed to be replaced. So glad I went along with his recommendation! Dr. Kim is probably the best dentist I've ever gone to, and his staff are always very friendly and professional as well. I really like that Dr. Kim takes the time to explain a lot of what he's doing and why, and also that he checks in often to make sure I'm doing okay; it really puts me at ease. He also strikes a nice balance between working very quickly, yet taking time to make sure certain aspects of the job are just right (checking my bite several times after fixing a filling to make sure everything matches up). On top of that, he's incredibly gentle; I've never felt even the slightest sting from the anesthesia needle. Another thing I really appreciate about him: he's considerate of my unique situation. I'm a cancer patient, so he's very careful when it comes to things like how X-rays might affect my radiation or chemotherapy treatment, or (when I needed to have a tooth extracted) what would be the best way to avoid the nasty osteonecrosis side effect that one of my medications is apparently capable of causing. Really scary stuff, and I'm very thankful he takes the time to research things like that so thoroughly. read more

Went in because I had a wisdom tooth that was latterly killing me, all it took was one call and I had an appointment. The receptionist was polite and did not rush me off the phone. When I went in early they welcomed me and I filled out 2 forms, had a little issue with the insurance since I am not the primary holder. Had to call the insurance directly to get their verification number. But through all this I was happy to see smiling faces and a dentist who comes to the front desk and greets his patients. So they have pretty advance X-Ray machines which were easy! Just stand there and let this machine revolve around your head for 30 Sec and you're done. There was no wait time...the dentist came in introduced himself told me exactly what he was going to do and got to it. Dr. Kim gave me enough Novocain that I did not feel a thing. Through the whole thing he kept asking if I was ok, which was great cause it made me feel reassured that if I was in pain he would stop. Before I knew it I was done and on my way home. He gave me a pain med prescription for Vicodin which I was hoping would work for me but did not. I got home and about 2 hrs. Later the pain came and I was in bed thinking "Oh my god why!?" This was my first wisdom tooth extraction...and I have to say it was the worst pain of my life. I am feeling way better now but I am dreading going back for the other 3 that the dentist said should be removed. All in all I am in love with this Dental Office and even dragged my boyfriend in for his checkup. I will be going back in 6 months for my cleaning and I am sure it will be great service too! read more

I didn't think I would ever say that I loved my dentist but here I sit, typing it on yelp. I am a nervous patient. I have big time anxiety before and during just about any procedure that might involve pain of any kind. Dr. Kim and his staff are so welcoming though, and so over the top friendly, I don't dread going to the dentist like I used to. Dr. Kim goes over everything he is doing with you, from a simple cleaning right up to drilling out cavities and leaves you with the feeling that not only does he know what he is doing, he cares how you feel about it. I have never in my 43 years been so aware of what was going on in my mouth. Dr. Kim takes photographs of your teeth - real photos, not just x-rays which are also amazing by the way. They are both taken digitally and pop up on a computer screen immediately - and he explains what he sees and why he believes as he does in a very understandable way. All procedures are explained as they are happening (I love this, sitting there in silence wondering WTH is happening is terrifying and the talking is a great distraction, not to mention informative) and if there is any unforeseen problem (larger cavity than expected, etc.) it is brought to attention right away. The worst part of sitting in the dentist chair for me is feeling completely out of control. Knowing what is happening is a great help. The office is small and cozy, the staff is fantastic and caring. His hours can't be beat. Who can get a dentist appointment after 5PM? Dr. Kim's patients, that's who! Beyond awesome for working people who have a hard time getting out of the office during business hours. I can't say anything negative about him, his staff, his office... He even takes Care Credit for procedures which might be more costly than I can afford all at one time. I definitely hit the jackpot with Dr. Kim! read more

This is the only dentist that I go to and I don't feel like I'm at a dentist - does that make sense? Before I went to Sunshine Dental, I was literally afraid of going to the dentist because 1) they're shoving lots of painful tools in your mouth 2) they don't tell you why they're shoving those painful tools in your mouth and 3) they're putting tools in your mouth and touching things like the overhead lamp, their pockets, sink faucets (germs. ew.) I can't emphasize how far Dr. Kim is from any of this. He is not only a really sweet and easygoing person but he actually patiently explains what's going on with the treatment, why he's doing what he's doing, and what you can do to maintain healthy teeth! The office itself is very clean and tidy and you're in and out in no time with minimal wait-time. Go see Dr. Kim! You can tell he really cares about the health of your teeth/gums and they always give you a little goody bag of floss/toothbrush when you check out! read more

I hate going to the dentist. Not because I'm scared of cavities, but because my childhood dentist has scarred me for life. Every time I'd go in for a cleaning, he'd end up poking/stabbing me in the cheek with a tool and I'd hear "OOPS" as I bled. EVERY time. But not at this place. Dr. Kim did not make me bleed. He did not say "oops". Instead he was very helpful in explaining what he was doing and answered any questions that I had with easy to understand explanations. He is honest and has wonderful chair side manners. He takes his work seriously and will put in 110 % into it. He always putting his Patients first and never diagnose what is not necessary. I moved away from the Torrance area to Westchester and I still drove 45 minutes in traffic just to see Dr.Kim and his staff. Amanda is so warm and cheerful at the front desk. Brenda, his dental assistant, is very kind and has a gentle touch doing xrays and cleaning. Dr. Kim is very fair and knowledgeable. There is a level of transparency here that I think more people in the medical field need to practice! He gives me all the options..ranging from prices, to level of importance, to what's deemed to be a "conservative approach" to "aggressive approach". I was a little apprehensive walking in as the office is in a tiny strip mall. But I'm glad I did. Pros: The office is small, but very clean and homie feeling. Dr. Kim and staff were SSSOOOO friendly! I really liked this place. The office seems new and the staff, including the Dr., are all young. Their machines and technique s seemed more up-to-date than some other places. They have a good check-in special for cleanings. I took advantage of that and there were no hidden fees or "recommended" additional services. Dr. had a gentle touch and was good at explaining what he was doing and why. Assistants were also nice. My few minor complaints are not really too important. One, my cleaning was done in an open area (i.e. no private room). Since I was the only one there, it was ok but if there were other patients there it could get a little akward or nerve wrecking. To be fair, I've seen the same set up at other dentists offices before. I guess its part of maximizing the space. Another complaint might be that they don't do 100% of all dental services, like orthadontics. If you're considering braces, this won't be a place for you. Since I'm a convenience type of person, I prefer to have all my dental related doctors under one roof. Just makes it easier. Other than that, my first visit was pretty good. They were accomodating with appointments, had good pricing, and my teeth felt smooth and clean afterwards. Job well done. read more

I was referred to Dr Kim by my periodontist, Dr Farahmad. She referred me to him because I had two fillings that needed to be replace. She assured me that he does real good work and highly recommends him to her patients. All I can say is that I'm glad that I trust her because she was right. I read Dr Kim's reviews and he does deserve more than 5 stars. His staff was very friendly. Dr Kim explains every step before and during the procedure. He makes you feel comfortable and if there's any extra dental work that needs to be taken care of, he will tell you if it can wait or not. Another 5 stars for Dr. Kim and his staff!! He's the real deal ya'll!! From the very beginning to not having to fill out 10 pages of paperwork (they ask u for your insurance info before u go in so u don't have to wait so long). I waited about all of 2 minutes to start the scary process of X-rays. On the contrary, the dental assistant made me feel so relaxed and I could tell she tried to work as fast and efficient as possible to prevent me from having to do them over again. Once Dr. Kim came in and examining my teeth he explains in FULL detail what he's doing and prob "dumbing" it down for me so I can understand exactly what's going on. (He will even let u hold a mirror so he can show you what hes doing if u want) He also explains the difference of what he does compared to possible what other dentist might do based on your previous experiences. There was no wait, the office was very clean, and the paperwork was minimal and took a second to fill out. Dr. Kim saw me right away and I felt like he and I were on the same page with what would be the best option for my teeth.
