The staff and doctor were very pleasant. The office was very nice and inviting. It was my first time there. I thought I had scheduled an appt for cleaning. That did not happen and I will not be going back. The process was a pain in the neck. I was there for 1 1/2 hours. Lots of gadgets, information, pictures, photos and technology. So if you want to learn a lot about dentistry, technology, teeth in general this could be a good option for you. I just wanted my teeth cleaned. I decided this was not a good fit for me. Also, I gave them my insurance card (I have pretty good insurance), but had to pay almost $300 at check out. I should have investigated more before scheduling the appt. Live and learn. read more

Finally you reached out to me. I simply asked your office manager to speak with you nicely and professionally. But she didn't allow me to do and she kept repeating same story over and over again. That made me mad at her. Back to the issue you have in your office: Your front desk never mentioned about out of network with Delta dental and they were surprised to hear my wife has insurance after the treatment. Although that was her first visit, your employee didn't tell her about treatment plan upfront. Is this your professionalism and how to treat new patients? If your office transparent about procedure, should verify all the information before start treatment. Again you are not acknowledging not confirming insurance information and treatment plan upfront. This is unacceptable. Also don't treat us differently just because of our ethnicity. read more

I have been a patient of Dr. Donohue for years (and am now also seen by Dr. Ellis!). Sunshine Dentists is a wonderful practice where patient's needs are really put first. Both doctors are great listeners and always ensure that I feel heard and that my dental needs are met with a kind and gentle attitude. I have major anxiety when it comes to having dental work done. Each time I visit Sunshine Dentists, I am greeted by a friendly and kind staff, who do all they can to put me at ease. The front office staff is very helpful when it comes to checking-in, paying my dental bills, and consulting about payment options for major surgeries or work that I need done. I get cleanings regularly and have no issues booking or sometimes rescheduling appointments. All of the staff here are professional, empathetic and hard-working. I cannot say enough positive things about this dental practice. I live in DC but drive almost an hour out to Burke to have my dental work done here. So this review is a little biased. I knew Dr. Donahue prior to being her patient. I am a fellow dentist who knew her from professional conferences and study clubs. As someone who spent years meeting many other dentists in the Northern Virginia area, I knew exactly who I wanted to treat my own mouth. I was looking for someone who is thorough, knowledgeable, clinically excellent and yes, gentle, caring and empathetic. The things that non-dentists may not be able to easily judge in dentists are their knowledge, competency and skill. Dr. Donahue ranks high in all those categories. I love the fact that I can have a highly technical and esoteric dental question with her and she can give a very well thought out and insightful response. But what dentists and non-dentists alike can easily see in Dr. Donahue is her warmth, hospitality and genuine care for other people. You can tell the moment you meet her. The name "Sunshine" is particularly fitting. Likewise, the administrative and clinical staff are warm and friendly while being very good at what they do. Best dentist Ive ever been to. The main dentist, Dr. Donohue is amazingly gentle and kind. Even more impressive and what motivated me even more to leave this review was the hygienist "Ying" who is the gentlest yet most thorough cleaning I've ever had..she even recommended I use a waterpick last visit and it changed my denral health..wow. Amazing place with gentle and effective dentists and hygienists. My gums have healed and are not sensitive any more due to her recommendation. Ying, you rule! read more

I've been going to Sunshine Dentist for several years now, and there are several things I like about the office: 1. Dr. Kristen Donohue is both technically excellent and a very kind human being. 2. The staff is friendly and disarming, professional and efficient. 3. The atmosphere and location are wonderful. From the chair, you can see these gigantic fir trees and if it's raining, you can watch the squirrels take cover under the branches. 4. The staff, as well as Dr. Donohue, were kind and accommodating to my three children, who could be described as outgoing and gregarious, even loquacious. 5. The staff is ethnically diverse, which helped make me feel welcome. On a personal note, I had somewhat of an emergency as of late (my crown developed a fissure). Dr. Donohue worked me in right away and she also treated me extremely generously given my lack of dental insurance. read more

Very rude front desk people. I don't think I have ever been spoken to like this before as a customer/patient. Although the dental care staff is very friendly and professional, I would say the complete opposite for the office administrative people. This is a fantastic dentist office. Appointments are conveniently scheduled and they always seem to be on-time. They send confirmation emails and text messages to make sure you don't forget your appointment; and they don't over schedule the office. Dr. Donohue and her staff are extremely friendly and competent. They do everything that is necessary, and they don't try to sell you on products or procedures that you don't need. A few years back, I had seen this dentist with a cracked tooth. I was told I needed two crowns one for the cracked tooth and the tooth behind All for a bargain price of $7 k. I ended up going to some other really bad dentists for another opinion. Ultimately, I needed an implant and no crown on that back tooth which the university of Maryland Dental School did for a fraction of the $7k. read more

I called their office to ask about my insurance benefits and was provided the requested information, indicating my insurance is PPO and they explained my coverage. Later that day I noticed that my insurance card said PPO plus PREMIER at the top, so I decided to call again the next day. I explained that I had called the day before and the information I recieved, and I explained what is written on my card so I asked if they could check their system again to see if PREMIER benefits would also apply. The answer I got was plain rude; the lady said "We checked yesterday and the information will not change from yesterday to today". Obviously I was not implying that the information had changed but wanted them to check again, thinking that other benefits may apply. Very rude front office. read more

My family and I have been seeing Dr. Donohue since she started her practice in Burke, VA. She and her staff are outstanding. They have truly provided the very best of care for all of us. Fortunately, she has been able to provide every type of dental care we have needed over the years. When insurance did not cover specific services we have always found her costs to be very reasonable without compromising quality. Only great things to say about this team! read more

We came here for an implant for my wife. At the initial phone call, I explained the situation, asked for a quote and asked if they worked with my insurance. I was told they would not know unless they examine the patient and file the bill to the insurance. So we arranged an appointment for consultation. On the day, Ms.Donohue used 3D X-ray, which she knew it was not covered by the insurance and we did not. They brought an estimate bill for the whole process and later performed some redundant process (taking a mold of my wife's mouth) which was totally unnecessary (we learned it later). They said they would call us about the insurance contribution once they cleared the bill and we started waiting. The following I called the office since I didnt receive any response and asked about the insurance and so. To my surprise I was told they wouldnt learn about insurance coverage for another 4-6 weeks, but to speed up the process I was told I should call the insurance myself. So did I and learned that the implant was not covered at all.Then I wanted to negotiate on the price and I was told max 5% or a write of over the insurance stated amount (which was just 3% below their price and they thought I didnt knew it) would be possible. I said I wouldnt proceed with them and ended the conversation with the business manager. A few hours later Dr.Donohue called and told me she learned the details about the previously performed grafting operation through contacting our previous DDS in the city I lived before. I mentioned about the price and requested negotiation. She said she would give us a face-to-face administrative appointment the following day and we could negotiate then. She said she wouldnt work that day for family issues and she would be at the office just to see us. On that day we appeared at the specified time to see her working on other patients and she refused to talk to us in person. Her business manager kept repeating the same details we previously talked on the phone and then I figured out the doctor's business ethics of lack of it. We left soon, and contacted our previous DDS from the city we lived before (Pittsburgh). Even without giving my full insurance details, his secretary called us back in 30 mins briefing about our insurance's lack of coverage for the procedure. She even contacted our health insurance to confirm. This process was impossible to receive from Dr.Donohue's business staff. They gave us a quite reduced rate and even took it lower before we negotiated. And this DDS teaches at one of the most prestigious medical schools in the nation. All in all, I and my wife feel that we were tricked into a consultation appointment, a totally redundant, useless, and insurance excluded process (3D X ray) was performed, and later the doctor backed off because the implant spot had a little metal pin planted during the bone grafting procedure which was performed by our formed DDS 6 months before. So this place is not for an implant and since I faced tricky business practices from Dr.Donohue and her staff, I will not go there again. read more
