The Sunshine Diner is a regular brunch destination for my friends and I. Why? Because the food and malts are AMAZING! So here's the skinny on the Sunshine Diner: ~Long line ups. Seriously. They're super long. Be prepared to wait at least 30 minutes for a table on the weekend. ~Kitschy and cool 50's style diner. It's a sea of Marilyn Monroe, Elvis Presley and James Dean inspired decor. ~ Order a malt. You won't regret it. My favourite is the Butterscotch malt. ~ Order an eggs benny of some sort. They're soooo delicious. My favourite is the Mmmmarvelous mushroom eggs benny. Sauce is a bit on the heavy side, but still very yummy. ~Now here's the deal. The reason this place doesn't get the full 5 stars is due to the service there. The waitresses are usually swamped and run off their feet. They're usually very friendly, but sometimes forgetful. The service there also takes quite a long time and you might have to wave down your waitress when you need a top up on your coffee/tea/water. So why do I keep going back? The prices aren't bad and the food and atmosphere are the bees knees :D read more

Great breakfast and super cool retro diner. I loved the retro feel of this place with posters of Elvis and Marilyn. I loved the small old fashioned booths. The service was super friendly and yes, there is a wait line for breakfast/ brunch, but the line moves pretty quickly. The breakfast menu wasn't bad. They had the old fashioned milkshakes, your regular breakfast choices: egg, bacon, egg benedict, pancakes and french toast. They also had hot and cold sandwiches and burgers. I love the BC Benny which was egg on an English muffin with cream cheese onion and smoked salmon. You can have a half order or a full order or mix and match the different benny's. It also came with the yummy famous home fries. And yes, those fries were pretty good !! I can't wait to come back and try out the other items on the menu :) read more

I went to Sunshine Diner on Greek Day and sat in the patio. It was a super nice summer day so it was a great experience! In the morning I rode 60 km in the Ride Don't Hide event for mental health. We got to Sunshine at about 3 pm so I was starving. I had the breakfast sandwich with the turkey sausage with 2 fried eggs. The platter also came with home fries and a nice fruit salad. Guess I was really hungry cuz all tasted awesome to me! This is a pretty cool 'old time' diner. Comfy environment and easy to hang out here for an hour or 2. Bookmark it and try it out! read more

This is one of the most overhyped and overpriced places I've ever been to in Vancouver. Stay. AWAY. I never knew you could cook home fries that are both crunchy and chewy at the same time? The scrambled eggs tasted like whatever the pan they used to cook them in and the meat looked and tasted like something a solider would have to eat in a food survival pack. And $4 for a "large" chocolate milk which basically was a short glass + milk + nesquick stirred together is comical. $38 for tasteless scrambled eggs, crunchy/chewy home fries, toast, questionable meat and a sad chocolate milk is criminal. Ok seriously, how did we wait so long to go to this place for breakfast??? (or any other meal for that matter as I am guessing the rest of the menu is just as amazing). Put it this way I was so impressed with my food that I took a picture of my meal. I am now one of the people I used to make fun of!!! But before we got our food my family had a blast hanging by the bar sitting in the '57 Chev bench sharing a delicious vanilla - yes only vanilla - milkshake that was anything but plain. The owner came over and chatted with us and invited our daughter to belly up to the bar where she ate her breakfast watching Bugs Bunny on the huge screen TV. All the while my wife and worked on our generously portioned and well balanced breakfasts. Highlights were many but a few that stood out were: 1) the choice to mix and match Benny's AT NO EXTRA CHARGE! That's right mixing and matching the two on your own plate not between the two of us!!; 2) Fruit AND home fries included instead of having to choose like at most other places we frequent. Not only that but there was a huge selection of fruit and not cheap ones either (kiwi, blackberries and many others); 3) Bella mushrooms in my omelette. I have never even heard of them before but they can't be cheap because they were fabulous. As for price it was very reasonable. Everything in my pic was $12.45. The mix and match Benny was the same price! I have no idea how they make any money... There were 15 people working! I could go on and on but needless to say we will be going back. I didn't even get into the awesome atmosphere, the fun and friendly staff, the ultra clean washrooms, the cool decor including an wicked jukebox... Now I am going on and on. Now this is something I cross a bridge for. And a bridge without a skytrain nonetheless. Does anyone understand how many different buses I have to take to get here? I first discovered this place when it was a block and a half down in a smaller and more charming location, and the move didn't seem to compromise anything, which is rare and awesome. While in University I would come here for breakfast just to enjoy the french toast and study by myself. It's just one of those places where you don't even care if you have anyone to go with. And why do you ask? Well, here's a list... Sausages Eggs Benny French Toast with Strawberries Fresh Squeezed Orange Juice It may look like a short list but there a ton of different kinds of Eggs Benny here and they are all mouth watering. The french toast is moist and mouth watering, and you can get them with strawberries. French toast is another one of those things that I think has to be done just right, and they do it right. Do yourself a big favour and get a side of sausage, its that great kind of sausage. Perfectly flavoured, cut in half and grilled in a ton of butter. You just can't get enough of it. The atmosphere is great with tons of large booths and the 50s decor. They have nice servers and in this new location they also have something resembling a patio, but more resembling the street, where they have a few tables if you want to eat outside. The only downside to this place is it ends up adding up. Especially considering its breakfast, so I don't frequent it as much as I would if it was a great deal. I've noticed a lot of people on here saying that the sunshine diner is over priced, is it? Yeah a little bit. But you know, I'm alright with that. It's not like I'm eating there twice a week, in fact, I probably go in there three time a month. I'm alright forking over a little extra for a number of reasons; the eggs are organic free-range and you can REALLY taste the difference, in my 4+ years of eating there I've always had really awesome service, and also it's not a franchise - Denny's can afford to give you a $2 grand slam, family owned places really can't do that. Brunch is by FAR the best meal of the day, even when I'm dragging my hungover butt over to sunshine I know that by the end of my eggs benny I'll feel slightly better, and much less grumpy. I mean really, who's grumpy after brunch? No one. That's who. I would give it five stars if it weren't for the oldies constantly blaring, I love brunch, but I'm also hung over 90% of the time I go in so I can't in good conscience say that I'm completely head over heals with the place. read more

Decided to go to a nice looking diner that was in walking distance. Sunshine Café is an amazing place to go to get a superb breakfast. I love it, and so does my family. The decorations in there were very interesting to look at. Lots of sculptures of famous people, and many vintage pieces. The red seats were in a great state- they were comfortable. Food wise, I got the breakfast burger. I liked the fact that you had many options to choose from. The menu was laid out perfectly. The bread was soft, and very fresh tasting. The bacon was easy and crunchy at the same time, and the egg had yolk oozing out of the center. The rest of the family seemed to enjoy their food. Oh, the fries were very good as well,perfectly salted. The fruit salad tasted like summer, it tied everything together- quite nicely might I add. Our waiter was very bubbly and friendly. Oh Sunshine Diner you are no light in my life. This place is always packed and the service and food is consistently decent. But apparently, in my experience, so are the hairs in your food. My penultimate visit to the diner featured a black hair underneath my fries. On my most recent visit I found another curly one--this time under my grilled sandwich. Both times the server was apologetic, offered a new breakfast, and removed the menu item from the bill. Good handling of the situation. "But the cook is Greek," she told me. Not sure what that meant... Oh well. With Nemoto's gone and Sunshine Diner firmly crossed off my west-Broadway-brunch list, like a breakfast orphan my search (and reviews) will continue. read more

I've only eaten here a couple of times, and sadly, not the brunch items. It's a kitschy place with a really good stand up burger line. They make their own burgers and they are hand pressed. The burgers as well as other items all come with a couple of sides and you can choose between fries, salad and fruit. The adult booze infused milkshakes are pretty awesome, there is also a select amount of beer (never had wine there). They got rid of their draft beer unfortunately. Expect kids here fyi, service is great, the staff seem to really care about their work. They have a cute little sidewalk patio in the summer, and recently started accepting only cash and debit (their lengthy explanation posted has to do with increasing merchant fees). read more

Damn. We go out for breaky almost every weekend. We just ordered 2 omelettes and a side of the famous potatoes. YUCk. Eggs shiny with oil. Potatoes shiny and soft slices. Cheapest excuse for brown bread ever. Soggy and under toasted and lacking in all flavor. We took a cple bites and then told the waitress what we thought of the food and left. Will never go back. When I dream the dream of living above a restaurant, the restaurant is the Sunshine Diner. For over twenty years I have been a regular. I simply ADORE the bennys. I ADORE the burgers. I ADORE the milkshakes. I think even Coke tastes better here. The space is clean, the food is always fresh and of high quality. Dimitri the owner is super charged and friendly. Sometimes (not often) there are very minor problems with consistency. More often than not, I get exactly what I want and it is delicious! This is, bar none, my favourite place for breakfast or brunch - or even a late afternoon breakfast. I have been going to the Sunshine Diner for at least twenty years, starting when they were at their original cramped hole-in-the-wall location. A place has got to be good when you stay with it that long. In fact, we moved out of the neighbourhood ten years ago and will still drive across town to go there. While everything I've tried there is delicious, it's hard to comment on everything because I have one particular favourite on the menu that I can't resist. I rarely even need the menu anymore. The front-of-house staff is always good. Great for if you're on your own, on a lunch date, or with family. While most of the other reviews are right about the wait times, that's pretty much true mainly for the weekend. It does seem that they've gotten faster at those times in recent years. However there never seems to be a wait on the weekdays, at least the many times I've gone there over the last few months. read more

Wasn't impressed with the Sunshine:( The food was just mediocre, and I felt it was a bit over-priced for what you get. You have to add on the french fries, they weren't included. I could make a better milkshake at home. The service wasn't great either. If you are looking to be surrounded by 1950's decor, than you might want to pop in for brunch. We were in the mood for Pizza, after the nightmare we had had the previous Sunday at the Rocky Mountain Flatbread Co, we still needed to get pizza out of our system... Having dirven thru Kits we decided on burgers instead. We stopped at The Sunshine Diner, never been there prior and being fairly new to the area, we expected the run of mill Wendys type fayre. My first approval, and it is often this that makes or breaks a place, the waitress immediately noticed us , gave us the necessary pleasantries and sat us down. I dont like to tell stories when I write reviews I like to keep it short. If you want a very nice lunch or early evening burger in fun and light hearted surroundings, you will not go wrong. The food here won't set the world on fire, but it isn't about that, for here it's about standing out from the countless burger joints up and down Vancouver. The fruit salad with the breakfast was real fruit...pomegranate, fresh pineapple, etc. I drink my coffee like its going out of style (ie quickly) and they always keep it topped up. They fit in a party of two within 5 minutes as promised, on a Sat. afternoon - not bad at all, as the place appeared busy and we almost kept walking, thinking that it would take too long and we were hungry. Very glad we went inside to ask! Friendly fast service and delicious sandwiches (I had the black forest ham and Swiss on sourdough with butter subbed for mayo - they did it right and a lot of places don't), and my friend had the grilled cheese with fries. My sandwich wasn't terribly generous on the ham, but it was tasty nonetheless, and my friend was happywitty her grilled cheese as well. The place was nice for a conversation until a party with 5 young children arrived and was seated near us (I love kids, but it's difficult to be heard over the din of 5 of them at once - not the restaurant's fault by any means - just a report on the clientele this afternoon). Would definitely go back and try some of the burgers ... Went here once last summer and sat outside and enjoyed the ambiance, so I'll probably head back once the weather warms up and try the outdoor seating area again. read more

Best bang for your buck breakfast option in the Kitsilano region! Sunshine has a large variety of options for all dietary preferences and ages at a reasonable price. This restaurant fully embraces the 50's theme with an assortment of decorations from Elvis Presley's attic, as well as Looney Toons playing on TV. Wait times can be a bit lengthy on weekends due to their popularity, but it has always been well worth the wait! Friendly staff and upbeat environment. The Sunshine Diner used to be my place of refuge every weekend back when it was on the corner of MacDonald & Broadway - way back at the turn of the century. I used to splurge on the Eggs Benny every now and then but my main meal was the fried eggs, sausage, hashbrowns and toast. There's something about the sausage - it is the most delicious breakfast sausage ever. I just returned from my second visit in the new location and am happy to report that my favourite meal remains unchanged and as delicious as I remembered. Mind you, the price has changed from $5.95 to $10.95 - what a difference a decade makes! But it was very great to be back 'home' within the same, albeit larger, atmosphere. Thanks Dimitri! One of my favourite places to get eggs benedict in Vancouver! Definitely recommend the Sinatra Benny if you love salmon & shrimps. Elvis Benny if you're a fan of bacon. I asked them to substitute the turkey bacon with more back bacon. The Popeye Benny is a good option if you love vegetables. It's similar to the Marilyn Benny, but I don't like tomatoes so I chose the former. The best part is you could get half and half, so you get to try two bennies in one go. The fruits are always fresh, unlike some of the other brunch places that give you canned fruits instead. Overall, love the decor. Gives you a complete diner experience. read more

This diner is one of the better diners in Vancouver in my opinion. It has a family-oriented and inviting vibe. The service is great too. The servers are friendly and accommodated my dietary needs. Also got our order perfectly (we modified a lot). They also continuously refilled our coffee and water and besides the diner being really busy, checked in on our table regularly. They also have a patio facing the sun so that's a plus. I found the food high quality which is sometimes iffy when eating diner food (let's be honest). Worth a check out! read more

I like the concept and the place runs well. We went for weekend brunch and were served promptly even though there was a lineup -- it moved fast. IMHO, the Bennies are here okay. The hollandaise is really rich but it lacks punch. I'm not convinced it's made from scratch using a traditional recipe. Too rich, not enough flavour for me. But that's me. Interestingly, when I inquired whether or not the extra price for the potatoes was worth it, the waitress recommended that it would be too much food to add on to a full order, which, I found out later, isn't any different in quantity to all other places that don't charge you for the side of potatoes or fruit or salad. Anyway, I opted to get the potatoes because I didn't want to miss out on something special. But I now think the real reason they don't recommend the potatoes is because they're not that good! They're deep fried thick slices of potato and nothing else, not even a sprinkling of salt. Sort of well-done, greasy, hefty potato chips, which are okay if you've got nothing else to eat, but not the grill-top-grilled crispy and soft (with a kick of something special) that I was craving. Hands down, my favorite breakfast spot in Vancouver. Every time I visit Vancouver I have to stop in to the Sunshine Diner for breakfast. I can't really comment on all the food because I always order the Eggs Benny (with home fries), but it's the best I've ever had. The sneaky good thing about Sunshine Diner though, is the service. We usually get our food about 5 minutes after ordering. I always expect to be at the diner for an hour or so, but am usually out in half an hour. Just make sure you get there before 10. A weekend ritual, I enjoy brunch at Sunshine a few times a month. The eggs benedict variations are great and you can mix and match a set of two different items. I give the Sunshine Diner five stars because it was better than I expected. The place is very fun - an old school diner with vibrant colors and photos of classic movie icons on the walls. They were playing The Three Stooges on the televisions. We went for breakfast and were expecting a typical greasy diner meal. The amount of food is great, and the presentation is nice too. They give you fruit with breakfast and it isn't your typical cantaloupe and honey dew melon, they had kiwis, raspberries, blueberries and pineapple as well. This diner is SO underrated! I know Sophie's is good and maybe the location helps. But I've had a Sophie's experience that didn't seem as fresh as they are at Sunshine. Sunshine's fruit salad is substantial and full of the good stuff. The benny's you can do mix and match, there are many kinds to choose from, and they Aren't stingy on the vegetables/toppings on the bennies (ex: the asparagus/shrimp ones, you get a lot of asparagus and shrimp, not just a piece of each.) I attempted to dine here this afternoon with my son and daughter who are in university. Our experience could go in a text book as an example of bad customer service. We arrived at 3pm, there were several open tables and we were seated right away. The hostess informed us as she handed us our menus that they only take cash or debit cards. No problem. I ordered a Bloody Caesar my daughter ordered a milk shake and my son had a water. Our waitress was very nice. We were planning on ordering 3 burgers. I began the order by asking for the fat Elvis burger. The waitress informed us that they were out of buns. There was a pause, I was thinking, well I would be fine with my second choice, the eggs Benny. Then the waitress asked us how many burgers did we want? We told her 3. She said, well let me go check if we have enough buns left. While she was checking I went to the bathroom. Upon returning the waitress said they could run to the Safeway a few doors away and get buns. I said ok, we put in our orders. When the waitress left my kids whispered to me that when I was gone, one of the waitress had been saying very, very loudly, in a very nasty, rude and aggressive tone so everyone could hear: Burgers? What, they want burgers? People want burgers. I know when I'm in a restaurant and they run out of something, I don't expect them to run out and get it. She repeated this 3 times. I called the waitress over and told her what my kids had told me, and I told her to cancel our order and bring us the bill for our drinks lest someone ended up spitting in our food. I did not ask nor was an offer made to comp our drinks. Our waitress was embarrassed and very apologetic. Bottom line to the owners: 1.Give customers a heads up when they sit down that your burger joint does not have the ingredients to make a burger. 2. Don't trash talk the customers in a stage voice that the entire restaurant can hear. 3. When you screw up royally, at least comp. the drinks. 4. Either retrain or terminate staff who are not able to control themselves from abusing the diners, unless the rude waitress was actually the owner, in which case, maybe it's time to shut up shop and find another profession. read more

Awesome throwback diner with a vintage feel. Accidentally walked by this restaurant with the intention of going somewhere else. Show's me some accidents are great! When I walked by with a friend, we saw that it was packed full of people, so it must be good! We were starving so decided to stop in to eat lunch. There was a bit of a wait, about 15 minutes, but the place was full of people. When we finally got sat down, I had a chance to look around, there was Elvis and Marylin Monroe pictures everywhere, and they had a big screen playing bugs bunny and tweetie show cartoons! The menu is fairly extensive. I ordered the sunshine benny which was good. It came with sauteed mushrooms and bacon with a lot of hollandaise sauce. I opted for the home fries instead of the regular fries. They were ok, seemed kind of over cooked, they were practically burnt. I seem to be going through some benny faze, if I see it on a menu, I want to order it. Strange I know. I have to say the highlight though, was the almond milkshake, it was soooooooo good!
