It's 2025 and ya unfortunately the old bacon and sausage has gone up to $8 but at least they still have a $2.95 breakfast. They will still serve you ham, eggs any way you like along with toast and for $2.95. Coffee is $3.50 with unlimited refills. It's the same great unpretentious vibe and they also will serve you a $3 beer with any meal on Tuesdays (and I think Thursday.) What a fun place! I got a booth seat and for the whole time I was just regretting why I don't have stickers or sharpies on me, they should have a vending machine for those in the place. Great hole-in-the-wall dive diner for breakfast/brunch. You simply can't beat $2.95 for a full breakfast plate! The eggs, toast and potatoes were great, the ham a bit suspect.... but the $5 pancake I ordered made up for it. It's pretty chaotic inside with people crammed at the entrance waiting for their name to be called for a table vs people trying to pay and exit, but that's part of the fun. You also have to get up to get your own coffee and water from the machines. Definitely old school and do it yourself here, but Bon's is an institution for a reason. The decor is wacky, with lots of graffiti everywhere and gives the place a certain charm. Tables, chairs and booths are worn due to so much use. Menu substitutions cost an arm and a leg. Waitresses are running around like crazy, taking orders and serving dishes. There's a classic vibe here that reminds you of simpler times. Been quite a while since I was last at Bon's, and returned mid week mid morning. Yes they still have a $2.95 breakfast which is great but only with ham...the bacon and sausage options are now $8. Still it was nice to return. I do enjoy the casual atmosphere, and self refilling your coffee. The eggs were cooked to order. How can one beat a $2.95 breakfast post pandemic...you can not. Post pandemic, it looks like their (in)famous breakfast menu has changed. As of the time of writing, yes it is still $3, but this is only with the ham and hash browns options selected. Upgrade to sausage or bacon, and it's now $7. Rye toast is now another $2 on top. Read the menu before making a decision. The other thing that has changed is that the place now serves $2 beers (some sort of lager) on Tuesdays and Thursdays. This has to be the new cheapest watering hole in town. Limit 2 drinks per person per visit. So yes, if done right, a breakfast and beer can be had for $5. Guess I'm coming back in the near future. read more

A Vancouver based foodie youtuber recommended this place so i decided to try it out with a friend one morning in November. Bon's is famous for their $3 breakfast deal all day, everyday. The food: The breakfast deal for $3 consists of two eggs with ham slices, hash browns, and buttered white bread toasted. It also comes with a serving of jam. I think for just $3 it's an EXCELLENT value for what you get and the dish overall is pretty good. My scrambled eggs were perfectly cooked. Ham slices were fresh. Toasted bread slices were buttered nicely and toasted well. But I liked the hash browns the most. It's tasty and kinda salty. My friend liked it so much they bought themselves another dish! I was already full at one dish so at $3 i'd say they give you a good sized portion. Not surprisingly, pretty much everyone else in the restaurant came for the same $3 dish. Looking at the menu, everything else is a tad pricey. $3 for a regular cup of coffee and $2 refills is not cheap. I didn't try anything else on their menu on this visit. Service: Staff are pretty nice and I felt welcome. The owner (the big guy) was checking covid vaccine codes and ID's outside. He was pretty strict about customers not going inside until you are checked. He was pretty busy taking customer's orders, serving meals, taking payments, and checking ID's outside. I came near the opening time after 8am and I was seated right away. Only 2 other tables were occupied at the time. I ordered 2 $3 breakfast deals which took a little longer than expected at about 10-12 minutes being served. Vibe: SO. MUCH. GRAFFITI! EVERYWHERE. Honestly, I think it's the ugliest decor I've ever seen for a restaurant. All the walls and booths have tons of graffiti on it. It's as if you had a huge big frat party and gave 100 people permanent markers to mark up the walls and booths with everything they wanted. Lot's of worn out random posters hang on the walls as well. It's a little unappetizing to see it but it didn't really bother me that much. I just never seen anything like it at a restaurant. Tables themselves were pretty clean though which is good. As for noise levels, the restaurant is not really loud, as you can easily talk at the table. They were playing pop music from the radio and a sports channel was playing on the TV. Overall, I wouldn't go out of my way here just to get the $3 breakfast deal. It's that good I saw a diner order 2 plates and immediately pack one away in his own take home container! Coffee is now $2 and even though menu shows $2 for refills, the waiter/son of owner invited us to help ourselves to refills. Unsure what the refill policy is but don't ask too many Qs lol! The cup is the size of a demi tasse so 2 cups is like a mugfull so $2 would be steep for just 1 cuppa. And the flavor is definitely good, a nicety not often afforded most cafes serving the masses. We did ask about the grafitti decor... tired of the upkeep of spray painting over local high school patrons' continued defacing of the walls and posters, the Son conceded battle and instead embraced the ink, like Gino's East Chicago pizza sanctuary, the scribbles now left to lovingly adorn all surfaces not taken by framed pieces. So this was my first time coming to this place, I came alone which I would find out was a bad idea. It turns out if you see a line up outside the door and you take your place in the line up, you are wasting your time. You have to go through the line and put your name on a list which I only found out after waiting 20 mins or so. After putting my name on the list I waited another 20mins and started to notice people getting to be seated that had put their name on after mine. I finally asked the hostess that looks like she's worked there a little too long and could care less, why I am not being seated and she straight up said because I came alone and all the seats would not be filled at my table. I was a little surprised and asked why wouldn't she give me the heads up when I reserved the seat so I wouldn't just be standing around wasting my time watching people eat their food who came after me! I don't think I will come here ever again. I just came back recently and was surprised that the place got dirtier than before. It wasn't as good as its used to be. I got the $2.95 breakfast and yes the portion was way smaller than 2 years ago. Also it was super greasy food. Well still the place not much service. It seems like the place is way darker than it used to be. I will still not drink from their brown cups. I bought my own water bottle and water. I came here just to try the $3 breakfast special. I was expecting a line but I guessed at 930 am on weekend, it was busy but we got a table. Service was almost non existent. They only came by to take order and served the food and cleared the plates. The place is dingy ghetto with graffiti and old posters all over the walls. The food was decent. Just do not expect anything fancy or gourmet. I will say this will likely be a one and only time visit. Just for the experience. I saw an insect crawling on the wall. A different kind of experience to be sure. Came by a week and a half ago for breakfast with the girlfriend around 11AM on a weekend. After a short wait we were seated by the window. We ordered pancakes(three for $5) and the breakfast special($2.99) sans meat. My scrambled eggs and toast were tasty, and the hashbrowns were really good as well. The pancake I sampled was very good too. For about $13 tax, tip and one coffee included, we definitely got our money's worth. You certainly don't go here for the ambiance or the service. I didn't really care for either. Our server was disinterested and overworked, appearing to be the only waiter in a full restaurant. Some guy outside was demonstrating something adult-oriented using balloons to his friends while eating. You can use your imagination as to what that was. The walls are full of graffiti and the whole place is a little divey, but perhaps that's what people like about it. Bathroom was serviceable. We waited awhile to get menus, longer to order and then the food came in a reasonable time. We were in and out within 45 minutes or so. INCREDIBLE! That's the one/word summary of my review! Any and all parts of this restaurant was covered in graffiti, even the bathroom mirror! Quite fitting for this legendary Vancouver grunge-y landmark. But unlike most such places to our South, Bon's does not feel threatening or a "white-power/Harley riding/tattoos over muscle" dark place! Instead I saw families there, toddlers taking the liberty to add to the decor and waitresses efficiently and merrily going table to table. And by the way, Bon the owner is oriental - Chinese I think, so...!! Of course I had the $2.95 breakfast and Wow - a very nice surprise that it was so good (errrr... actually not much room to mess up cooking breakfast!!) and HUGE! A reasonable chunk of ham, perfect easy over eggs, and totally delicious home-made hash browns. None of those out-of-a-freezer bag nonsense, but real potatoes roughly cut and roughly fried. Delicious. And for $2.95 also got 4 triangles of toast and as much strawberry jam as I wanted. What a deal! My better half had the MONTECRISTO, and she let me try a bit - and this was great too! Lots of ham, cheese and turkey (nice touch, not a usual ingredient for a MONTECRISTO ) dipped in egg and fried (NOT oily - another plus!) And served with a mound of crispy outside soft inside French fries! Sure, some MAY have room to complain about one thing or another here, but Bon's is full of character and "Lo-brow panache" so before you do any such thing - remember you may not want to be considered a prissy elite wannabe doing so. They are wanted for a reason:) Paying $5 final total was a good experience if you're dining alone and unfamiliar with the area. I paid for $2.95 breakfast sampler and a drip coffee. I had a quick "to the point breakfast. Waitress was straight forward not mean but not extra nice (I don't blame her). I think there's one cook and one other server. Not sure if the place will pass with dept of health but if you have a good immune system and leave kids/frail elderly at home, you should be alright! Never have I ever felt so gross in a restaurant like this before! It was as if the walls were trying to speak to me. I went to the bathroom to take a break from this mess but the bathroom walls were also covered in graffiti. Just went to the bathroom to wash my hands, I felt so filthy. I ordered pancakes 2-high. It was massive and fluffy. It wasn't really dry nor was it tasteless. I knew that my friend didn't just bring me here for nothing. It was even better with a little bit of butter and lots of maple syrup. But would I come back for the pancakes again? Probably not. I now know why this place is such an institution. The $2.95 is a killer deal and really not any less substantial or lower quality than any other greasy spoon. It also has atmosphere. I felt there were real people eating and working here and the graffiti laden walls with defaced movie posted give it that gritty flavour it is known for. I do notice that they don't seem to have an bike parking/racks despite having an otherwise ususable square of concrete out front that seems ideal. $2.95 for regular old sausage, eggs, toast ($5 if you opt for bacon), and decent pan fried real potatoes - it is hard to go wrong, get 2!! The other menu items seem like less of a deal but by no means pricey. Lastly, and something I see noone else mention - this place faces east so in the morning the natural light pours in over the wide street of Nanaimo without any tall buildings (yet) blocking it. You certainly won't come across a place like Bon's every day. As soon as you step in through the front doors, you are greeted by such an idiosyncratic mix of colours and imagery that you would be forgiven for thinking you had stepped into a modern art exhibit. Possibly featuring Jackson Pollock. It is chaotic, but within the chaos there is a sense of purpose and direction. Is that an unsightly blemish on the wall from years of not being cleaned or an intentional fixture? Thanks to the pricing of the food, you can ponder deep mysteries such as that instead of how much of a hit your wallet will take! For about $10 before tax, I got a giant platter of breakfast items and a plate of spaghetti. Think Cora's, but without the frills, and of roughly similar quality for the breakfast plate. The spaghetti was nothing noteworthy, but hey, I paid $6, maybe $7 for it? I'm not complaining. We were told "you know where the water is" despite this being our first time here, which was kinda cool - this being a relatively famous watering hole among locals, we too felt like we were included in that despite being tourists from halfway across the country.
