This was a very disappointing visit. My daughter and her cousin both ordered the Montreal Poutine. It wasn't good. The gravy was bitter from what I heard. Something about it upset my daughter's stomach for the rest of the day. I ordered a Caesar Salad and a side order of tater tots. The tater tots were decent but the Caesar Salad...worst Caesar Salad I have ever had. It was drenched in way too much salad dressing which made it kinda soggy. About 2/3 of the way through eating it, I started to feel kinda sick. Then I looked down to my plate and realized that some of the greens used in my salad were not fresh. They were the opposite of fresh. They were dark green and slimy looking. Uggghhhh. I brought it to our server's attention and he made sure to remove the Caesar Salad from our bill. My mother's waffles were the only decent dish at the table. With 3/4 of us not enjoying our food, and 2/4 of us feeling sick from the food...I don't see us coming back to this restaurant again. read more

This place used to be a great greasy spoon joint with decent portions and a great value. I'm sad to say it is no longer that. I don't know what happened to this place but it's really gone downhill and as such, I cannot recommend it to anybody. The portion sizes now are ridiculously small and here's an example; I ordered a patty melt sandwich which typically comes on rye bread, cheese, burger, and grilled onions. It was delivered with so few grilled onions that I asked for more and they charged me an additional two dollars For getting a side of grilled onions. I didn't want a side of grilled onions. I wanted to grill onions that were supposed to be on the burger in the first place. The side choices were french fries salad or tater tots and I got tater tots. There was literally 10 Tater tots on my plate. I asked for a side of thousand island dressing and that was again another $2! Lastly, the waitress was nice, but likely one of the most mediocre waitresses I've ever had in any restaurant. Our dirty plates sat in front of us while she went and cleared the empty table beside us before grabbing our plates. There wasn't a line of people waiting and there were other empty tables available , so that was a bit shocking and that is just really crappy customer service in a restaurant. read more

Nice breakfast spot. Totally a dive inside, but the breakfast was good and reasonably priced. The service was fast, friendly and attentive. Each element on the plate was spot on for what it was. The waffles were kinda crisp and tasty, the pancakes were perfect circles and really good, good eggs and tasty little sausages. The kids loved it too. If you want a solid, decent breakfast that isn't fluffed up with all sorts of bits and pieces, then this is the place for you. We sat down for dinner and service was fine. We ordered and the food was fine. Then we saw a rat run across the floor twice. We told our waiter, and he told his manager. Then we saw it run across the floor by our booth twice more. We told the manager, and she said, "that's weird, we have pest control come out every week." We continued eating and saw it run across again. So we got up, without finishing our food, went to the front to tell them we were done. I popped in for brunch and thought it was A-okay. It sounds like Eighties is a bit of a North Van institution. It's pretty cheap, the service is friendly and speedy and you can get all the normal breakfast/brunch options. These are all good things. It's just...the food isn't quite as good as everything else. It's not bad...it's just what I would expect to get from a diner in the 1980s. I think food culture and brunch has gotten better since then. I first tried the Eighties as I was exploring the neighbourhood shortly after moving nearby. I liked it for its decent food, friendly staff, moderate prices, and especially for its quiet atmosphere. Despite the presence of a number of TVs (including a large screen projection TV) and some hockey memorabilia on the walls, I have never seen a bunch of rowdy, drunken fans in there yelling at the screen during a hockey game. So, when a group of science fiction fans were looking for a regular place to get together for meals and discussion, I suggested the Eighties, and I've never regretted it. The staff have been very helpful and flexible, and the prime rib special on Friday nights is delicious. read more

Breakfast was served very quickly with bottomless coffee ($3.50) and the #6: two eggs, 4 turkey sausages, toast, smashed/roasted potatoes, and jam. I stop by on weekdays occasionally for the weekday breakfast $5.75 specials. Well priced for the amount of food you get. It used to be $4.75 a few years ago but cost of living keeps going up. The restaurant does not seem as busy as it used to. The level of service is based on which server is working. Some days are good while other days you are left with empty cups of coffee or water waiting to be refilled. The restaurant decor is very dated and goes well with the restaurant name. I went to Vancouver for the first time in May 2016 to take my teenage son to visit his girlfriend that is from North Van. In the months prior to arriving she kept saying how she really wants to take us to this breakfast place called the "Eighties Restaurant" and that we'd LOVE IT. My current husband and is from North Van (I met him while on that trip) and he agrees that for some reason everyone in North Van seem to love this place. Needless to say I was VERY UPSET that morning in May 2016 when I went the the eighties restaurant. Let me preface by saying that even though I was born in 1981 and was just a child in the 80's I LOVE 80's music, 80's movies, 80's TV, I collect 80's toys and I LOVE everything about the 80's. When I got to the restaurant and looked at it from the outside I thought it looked cool and somewhat 80's. But upon walking inside my heart fell! It is NOT in fact an 80's restaurant in any way, shape or form. It is just a regular, boring diner! I had been hyped for months to visit this "80's restaurant" only to discover that it is not in fact an 80's restaurant. I was picturing something more along the lines of the diner in Back to the Future II. (An 80's classic btw) Apparently my son's friend didn't think I'd love the Eighties Restaurant because I love the 80's. She just thought we'd love it because apparently everyone in North Van loves the Eighties Restaurant. And the silly 16 year old girl that she was thought that after travelling thousands of miles we'd like to visit a lame diner that you can find anywhere in North America. Nothing bad, but definitely nothing special. This is your standard eighties themed greasy spoon. It's a good place because it's the only place on the north shore that has actual diner fare. The food quality isn't incredible but I didn't expect much coming in. The eighties decor was super fascinating and the novelty of it all made up for it. Our waitress seemed like she may have been having a bad day, I get it, but she was a little bit snappy and seemed almost annoyed to be dealing with us. I took a star off for the service and the actual food, which gave me a bit of a stomach ache afterward. I don't think I'd come back here. The price was good, as it was only $7 for a whole breakfast. I also felt like the employees did not want to be there. The waiter was fine, but the lady who greeted us at the door was totally not wanting our business. It's a shame because the first contact you have with your customer is the most important, and sets the tone for the rest of the visit. We were desperate to eat and get going quickly, so we settled for her "it's not my problem" attitude and hoped for the best. The hashbrowns were so dry, and had this crusty stuff on them, as if they hadn't cleaned their grill and we were getting all the burn chips or hardened starch on our dish left over from whatever else they had been cooking that morning. The place was so dusty - disgusting. I don't know how they stay open for business. Clearly the employees are not motivated enough to clean properly, and obviously that has to do with bad management. The new menu was a disappointment, we hadn't been in a couple of months and specifically loved the Eighties restaurant for its menu depicting food from the eighties. Stopped in yesterday for early dinner and were surprised to see the place near empty and a greatly reduced menu. The food was good but there was a lack of appeal, maybe from our waiters negative comments about the previous owners having no imagination.? As far as we are concerned we don't need a return visit, the new menu could be had at any pub on the North Shore, there wasn't even milkshakes on the new menu. I think carving the old menu down like they did has brought some feelings of disappointment from lots of people, maybe the name should change too? This place is definitely nostalgic because it's absolutely an old 80's throw back and is very popular for brunch. Prices are reasonable and servings are large, however there are no healthy options or substitutions and you cannot substitute anything for any meal. I ordered an omelette (The Western $11) and added Avocado ($2) and Jalapeños ($0.75). It can with toast and pan fries. I really wanted pancakes instead of the toast and fries, but you just have to pay full price for the side of pancakes ($5.75). Overall, I found the food quite greasy which is weird cause it's just eggs, ham and veggies. My thoughts are they do not clean the grill very well and you get crust brown greasy bits in your omelet. Also, the pan fries look pretty crappy. Pancakes were decent and you can add fruit (sauce style not fresh) for another few of $2.50. They do have daily specials and they do have a liquor license. If you are looking for a cheaper greasy spoon that's a bit of a dive with some eighties nostalgia than this is your jam. read more

I found this place 2 years ago with a friend who lives off Lonsdale. I don't eat in North Vancouver often, and my friend recommended Eighties as it was within walking distance and we were short on time. It's nice enough inside- um, kind of 80's style with large booths and the like. Service is always quick, and more efficient than most restaurants I feel. Huge menu, good sized portions with tons of choices and reasonably priced. Always get our food quickly, coffees topped regularly - super service with a smile. It's usually full and busy- and deservedly so. This is my favourite independent breakfast type restaurant on the North Shore- and is my first choice for comfort food. read more

Can I tell you a story? When we first moved to North Van we were intrigued by the 80s Restaurant. What can it be? Is it kitschy and ironically 80s? Are there 80 items on the menu? Hmm! We went in and discovered, no, it was just a restaurant opened in the 80s with pretty standard, dated, decor. But! The person who seated us was very nice and it was clean and we were determined to give it a go. We went at a completely non-busy time and, based on the other patrons there (at the time) decided that perhaps it was called the 80s Restaurant based on the fact that the only people who frequented it were... hmm... MATURE. But the items on the menu all sounded tasty and all were very reasonably priced. Optimism! One of our party saw that mashed potatoes was one of the sides options and also noticed that many of the dishes were served with garlic bread. It would be swell if she could get garlic mashed potatoes! The question was asked and our server seemed very confused. He told us to hold on and he would ask the kitchen staff. He came back, said no, it's not on the menu so she can't have it. My friend asked the server to confirm that they have both mashed potatoes and garlic butter. Yes. But it can't be put together? No. What if she got the mashed potatoes with a side of garlic butter? Yes, that they could do. Voila! Hooray for garlic mashed potatoes! It was absolutely, utterly HILARIOUS. And bonus? They turned out really well (as did the rest of our food. If I recall, I had a grilled cheese sandwich and it was the bees knees). Fast forward a couple years and I've now finally gone back, this time for Sunday brunch with a North Van native who assured me that it's excellent, especially if you just want no-nonsense-yet-tasty standard food. And that's what we got! My French toast (with eggs, perfectly cooked bacon and a side of strawberry topping) was delicious and cheap. The boyfriend got pancakes - also very good. Our server was awesome and hilarious, it was busy but not stand in line busy and did I mention cheap? So long story... uh... long... I recommend it! It's the nearest thing North Van has to a basic sit down diner (that I've found), the location is fantastic, and it's got lots of seating (including an outdoor patio overlooking the brand new library and courtyard area outside). read more

We came into 80's by default, as our local feedbag is closed on Tuesdays. -oops. But Eighties is okay! -(and yes, it's been around since the 80's, so the decor is, um... -eighties.) Good bar menu, Burgers and crispy fries, lots of sammi's, dinner menu with small steaks, (I'll be back for that.) The Yam fries are 5 bucks, which is cheap by BC standards and they are excellent (and quite interesting to see too!) -served with yummy Chipotle Mayo. I found this place online while looking for a brunch place one Sunday. There are plenty of menu selections and the prices are really cheap compared to other spots around Vancouver. I entered not really expecting too much, but the decor surprised me and the place didn't turn out to be the greasy spoon setting I'd painted in my head; it has a kind of Wendy's/Whitespot hybrid of interiors. I had the sausage and cheese omelette accompanied with larger-than-usual homefries and toast (whole wheat). One of my fellow brunchers had pancakes with two eggs and sausage, and the other, two eggs, sausage, home fries and toast. Nothing too exciting for any of us, but we got exactly what we asked for at a good quality and great price. Coffee tasted good, too. My omelette and sides cost me $7, as did the other brunchers' choices. I won't be rushing back here anytime soon due to the lack of more adventurous brunch menu slections, but I would definitely recommend this place to anyone who wants solid breakfast staples at really reasonable rates. read more

Growing up in the eighties was a lot of fun. Vancouver was still a small city, cars were still mostly square boxed looking, a home computer could not connect to the internet, and the 80s was by far the most EPIC decade for film and entertainment. But enough of my biased opinion of 80s pop culture. This was a place where I was hoping to see some nostalgic items related to that decade. Maybe a bit of like what Planet Hollywood has done with their restaurants to show off Hollywood stars' memorabilia. Unfortunately, the restaurant didn't fashion such items. Darn it! Although, the decor hands down seems to have been untouched since the eighties. You can tell it's old fashioned when wood panel is your most prominent decor feature. Wall to wall wood. The bench seating certainly brought back memories of an old 80s Vancouver restaurant. Looking around the restaurant some more, I could tell that they may have wanted to pull away from the 80s theme and 'modernize' the place with at least half a dozen LCD screens, and an online media display streamer. I even saw twitter updates on their media display screener. Surprisingly, a mushroom burger in the 80s tastes a lot like a mushroom burger in the 2010s. Go figure.... read more

While in town visiting a very sexy woman, I saw this place and was super looking forward to the experience of what Canada can muster up that's pure 80s. All I can say is WTF!!!! If Canada's 80s decade was at all like this place, then I feel incredibly sorry because you guys MISSED OUT on an amazing decade. This place needs to be renamed something more nebulous like "Carrows", "I-Hop", or some other run-of-the-mill coffee shop. This place has absolutely NOTHING to do with the 80s. Given the decor and the coffee shop type of food, maybe 80s refers to the age demographic of patrons. If the owner or manager of the 80s restaurant is looking for input to make this business model improve, here are a few suggestions. 80s arcade games.... Create an arcade in the restaurant sporting the top ten games from the 1980s - Tempest, Pacman, Joust, Robotron, Asteroids, and so on.... not tough or expensive to do if you know the right people to buy from. Second, get yourself some real eighties carpeting Third, buy a bunch of posters from the 80s....I'm talking Nagel prints, 80s movie posters, get some 80s shirts like "WHAM MAKE IT BIG" or "FRANKIE SAYS", or even Hypercolor shits. There's a TON of stuff that could be bought and added to the walls of this place. If I got my hands on this place, you wouldn't recognize it. Finally, get yourself XM radio (sirius or whatever it's called), and play only 80s music. I'm not talking the sappy mainstream crap, I'm taking the modern rock, new wave, and hair bands. The 80s were an amazing pop culture decade, the music was kick ass but yes...there were some painful songs to forget too. The food is meh.... typical coffee shop food. I suggest re-naming your food after 80s pop culture, movies, arcade games, you name it. Give that place some LIFE!!! If you serve pancakes, make them in the shape of PAC MAN. Get it?? If not then sell the place to me and I'll make it a real 80s restaurant! read more
