We contemplated driving there but then realized that parking at the beach on July 4th, would be atrocious. So we remembered that the free Summer Beach Shuttle happens to have a stop on its route right in front of our home and right down the street from the Venice Beach Pier. Princess and I were very pleased with the shuttle service and shocked about how popular it was. Pro-tip: Make sure you shower and wash your clothes on a regular basis before you go on this small shuttle, for the sake of the other passengers forced to take in the ripe, sour smell of alley dumpsters.

Second, the…read moreGold Line is no more, and this station is now the eastern terminus of the E Line (it was formerly the the southeast terminus of the Gold Line and then the eastern terminus of the southern half of the severed Gold Line)--new experience and all. PARKING STRUCTURE It used to be free on weekends, but it no longer is. That's kind of annoying, but $3 for three hours is pretty good. There are plenty of parking spaces. You can use the Metro app to pay for parking, or you can use the machine on the first level. If you use the machine, you'll need your license-plate number, so either memorize it or take a photo of it before you go downstairs. There's only one pay station. I believe parking is free from four a.m. to eleven a.m., but I may just be misreading things. You would end up paying way more for parking (and gas) if you drove to your final destination, so don't complain about a dollar an hour. Unfortunately, there's only one entrance to the parking structure, and you have to be heading southbound on South Atlantic Boulevard to enter, so even though the address of the station itself and its platform are technically on Pomona Boulevard, you'll need to approach on Atlantic from the north to park. Trust your GPS in this one case. The elevator is Peesville, USA, so don't use it if you don't need to, and don't touch anything with your bare hands. E LINE If you want to go from East L.A. to Santa Monica for $1.75 (or $0.35 if you're a senior outside of rush hour), this is your stop! I've yet to make that entire trip, but I've now traveled to two Notre Dame-USC games from here. The first time, it was to Jefferson/USC Station to see the Notre Dame women dominate the No. 3 Women of Troy at the Galen Center. The second time, a week later, to Expo Park/USC Station to see the Notre Dame football team punch its College Football Playoff ticket against a defenseless Trojan defense. Atlantic was our starting and returning point on both occasions, and it still scores three stars as a station. They need more fare machines. At the eastern (parking-structure) end of the platform, there are only two. Because the machines are so complicated, this is nowhere near enough, especially at the beginning/end of a line. My other complaint is that the distance from the eastern end of the platform to the parking structure is ridiculously long. I never noticed this before, but then I had never ridden the train with someone who couldn't easily walk long distances before. When the E Line gets extended farther east (all the way to Whittier!), they're actually going to rebuild the platform southeast of where it now sits. I hope they take walking distance from parking to the new platform(s) into account.

Know your license plate number to punch into the kiosk. $3 for public parking (only after 11am) Can pay via credit card or cash at the kiosk. Transit riders can also pay via an app. I suppose it is a changing of the times. An extra $2 plus $1.75 in one way fare is still reasonable enough to avoid the headache of driving and parking in downtown.

To my amazement, it was cheap ($1.75), clean and efficient! I took this from Santa Monica and I was in Beverly Hills in no time!! This was a huge difference from the NY MTA buses even though the exterior looks exactly the same. The seats inside were colorful and the floors weren't sticky. It was well taken care of.

If there's anything I hate more than waiting in line, it's waiting for the bus, so I don't take the…read morebus that often. But when I do, I make sure to hop on the 704, which is pretty much the only bus I will take without hesitating. Since the 704 is a long and new bus, it's air-conditioned. Since it's August and 80-something degrees outside, the seats in my car get hot and I break into a sweat just opening the car door (just kidding, girls don't sweat) and I don't like that, so I take the air-conditioned 704, which is a comfortable temperature both at the time I get on and at the time I get off. And the 704 comes pretty often so I don't have to wait and wait and wait some more. Sometimes, an old lady might offer you a nickel and then a dime and then a dollar and when you don't accept she might get really upset. Watch out for the crazies. The trick to having a comfortable bus-ride is to have a really great don't-sit-next-to-me face, but if you're cute (like I am) it doesn't always work.

John handled our loud, crazy group like a pro--kept us on schedule, got us there and back safely, and even went above and beyond by grabbing straws when we forgot them.
