I'm very glad that I found out about SunWork. SunWork is a nonprofit that only does solar installations for customers whose electric bills are less than $100/month. They use a combination of paid workers and volunteers. Two of the big solar companies refused to even give me a quote (one because I live in a townhouse, and the other because my electric bill is only $30/month). Two other big solar companies gave me quotes that were much higher than SunWork's price. Marc Fontana of SunWork came to my house to give me a quote, then returned to lead the installation, and then returned for the inspection (which we passed). He was very nice, he answered all of my questions thoroughly, and he made sure that the system was installed properly. My 3 kW system has been up and running for 2 weeks and is working well. read more

We heard about SunWork through a coworker but it took us a year to schedule an installation. We ended up with a 3.15kWp system with a built in EV charger (SolarEdge) and it was great that we could participate in the installation. We received PTO last night and everything is perfect! I had been looking into solar for a while and the wife kind of accelerated the process when she got a quote from SolarCity during a visit to Home Depot and they tried to sell us a lease that didn't make a whole lot of sense. I found Sunwork through another site and the feedback there was excellent there as well. Also liked their philosophy about helping proliferate solar and make it economically viable for homes with relatively low usage. Paul and Meo, the project manager assigned to my install made the process very simple. They asked for some information about energy use and gave very detailed information about what they would recommend and why. I asked several questions about better panels or installing more electric appliances and they were patient in explaining why they would stick with their original proposal or what I needed to think about from an economics perspective to make a good decision and the trusted adviser approach was much appreciated. Quote that they initially came back with was the lowest from a $/kW perspective out of anyone that I had talked to Install went off without a hitch. Originally budgeted for possibly two days but everything got done the first day. Permitting, inspections and applications to PG&E were all taken care of. Had one small hiccup with a loose connection but that was fixed promptly. Final invoice came in below the original quote and literally every item was itemized so costing is as transparent as it gets. Would encourage everyone (who has a low electricity bill) to give Sunwork a shot. read more

Outstanding! This non-profit organization does an incredible job for those who qualify. Currently that means you have to have an average monthly electric bill of less than $100/mo, with some exceptions for electric vehicles. Sunwork will charge only for the cost of the panels, hardware, and electronics, and can therefore offer an unbeatable price per watt compared to commercial vendors. Al supervised a very experienced crew of volunteers to install our 4KW, 14 panel system in just over one day. They did a fantastic job with great attention to detail and kept everything up to code. Furthermore, they took care of all permits with the city and PG&E. There is simply no reason to use anyone else if your home qualifies. Great experience with SunWorks. Ernest did a great job with the installation. Prices are very competitive and they are very responsive and worked with me to get a perfect system. There was an issue with one power optimizer, which failed after a couple weeks of being installed. Rueben was very diligent in getting the spare parts from the vendor (under warranty) and replacing it in a very short time. Sunworks is a small company, however they make sure to take care of their customers after they have installed a system. Highly recommend them. read more

Sunwork installed a 5KW watts system for me back in May/2019 and it took more than 4 months to have them to wrap up the final inspection with Fremont city. The panel installation was quick but configuration of the wireless logger was a big headache to me. It literally took us a few weeks to set it up correctly. Now after 6 months, we're seeing ARC Fault in the ABB String Inverter (no clue what it is) and only half of the panels are generating power. Talked to my installer but no idea when he can come by to look at my system :( . Overall, their price is much cheaper than other competitors but you probably need to get ready to troubleshoot your own system in case something goes bad. read more

I worked with Sunwork for a 4.1 kW system that was just installed on my home. Like others, my electric usage is low enough where it was difficult to see a PV system as money well spent (if considering only the economics of it), but the Sunwork model made it a much better equation. Marc from Sunwork led the installation, and several trained volunteers showed up to help with the installation. I had attended a Sunwork volunteer training session as well, which taught me the basics of installation, and helped me choose a system design that worked best for me. I enjoyed helping with the installation as well and I know a lot more about my PV installation than I did a few days ago. The entire system was installed and hooked up in two days, and the City inspector liked the attention to detail that Marc provided. Sunwork provided a lot of guidance with the City-required PV interconnection agreement and the rebate forms that really facilitated the whole process. Sunwork exceeded our expectations in every way. They made it affordable for us to go solar and took care of all the details from beginning to end. Our project lead, John Beard, was outstanding. He communicated with us every step of the way. He took care of getting the permit from the city of Watsonville, which took multiple phone calls and visits to the city office until they finally got it done. I enjoyed having the chance to help with the installation and learned a lot along the way because John is also a fine teacher along with his technical and contractor skills. John is a real craftsman and did such a great job that the city building inspector was only at our house for about five minutes before he signed off on the completed project. We weren't invoiced until after the system was completely installed, inspected by the city and approved by PG&E for grid connection. All I can say is WOW. These guys are so professional from beginning to end. We didn't think we could get solar, due to our small electric bill and small house. But because putting solar on small houses with low electricity bills are their specialty, SunWork was able to help us. A sales pitch from a different solar company ironically led us to a great experience with SunWork. The pitch showed us that an installation is affordable, and that we should look into other install offers that were available. I had coincidentally read about SunWork in the newspaper some time before, and they turned out to be perfect for our needs (relatively low amount of electricity use, able to purchase equipment), As a nonprofit, SunWork keeps costs low by using volunteers for its install work and welcomes folks who want to learn about the process. As a result, their project managers (ours was Brent W.) truly work with you to decide on the best system for your house, vs. the most expensive system they can sell you. Communication with them was easy as Brent kept us updated constantly. He even went out of his way to do a small but very helpful additional work on roof that was not connected to the install. Sunwork.org Solar Panel (PV) installation is a no brainer 09/17/2014 Affordability: PV Solar Systems are thought to be quite expensive, often taking 12 - 15 years to pay for itself.. so, most people pass on the opportunity to take the plunge. That was my case, too. Solar City quoted me $21,000 (yikes) back in 2010 and after a 30% Federal Tax Credit (Renewable Energy Credit) their system was still $14,000.. I concluded it would take me 14-15 years for such a system to be justified (since my PG&E electric bill averaged about $85/month or $1020 annually. Solar Companies today (like Solar City and Sungevity) resort to "leasing you a system" because it appears to be less costly (on a monthly basis). What they don't tell you (at least, proactively) is that a lease often is much more expensive than a purchase. Most Solar leases are 20-25 years long for at least $100 per month. Do the math: 25 years x $100 = $25,000 over the life of the lease.. Sure, a lease offers you peace of mind and "free repairs" if something wears out, but the fact is, in a 20 year period, the only thing that will need replacement is the $1400 inverter, which is warranted for 10 years. The other parts of the system (the PV panels) are warranted for 25 years. Bottom line: the best way to go is a purchase.. My purchased system from Sunwork.org (not leased) cost $9900 - 30% Federal Tax Credit (Renewable Energy Credit) for a net price of $6930.. making it possible to justify the initial cash outlay (in the form of savings) in only 6 1/2 to 7 years. After that, your electrical power is largely "free". Larger systems will, of course, cost a bit more, but you would be off-setting a larger PG&E electric bill and your savings would pay for themselves in roughly the same amount of time. Got a new install with Sunwork. The process was amazingly simple. John handled all parts of the process with great attention to details. I also got to contribute to the installation by helping out with some simple tasks, which I personally found rewarding, as I got to understand how solar installations are setup and about the choices in the design of the system. SunWork did a great job installing our 7kW rooftop system. The install was top rate and very clean. They provide a good selection of equipment and walk you through the process. The only issue we had was the performance (lack of scheduling capabilities) of the SolarEdge EV charger with our EV (model 3). John and team worked hard to remedy it -- did everything possible -- but at the end, SolarEdge (the equipment provider) just dropped the ball. From Reuben to John, we had nothing short of an amazing experience! We heard about SunWork through a friend who had them install solar a couple of years back. Once I heard that SunWork trains volunteers, giving them some new job skills that they may then one day put to use, I was intrigued. Another friend of mine who used SunWork said, "we don't charge much because we're not in it to make money." They are definitely a people company. Yet, a company that does great work. Our system (11 panels) was installed on one Sunday...given that Saturday was a rain out.) I had fixed lunch, so the five of us enjoyed a good meal and some conversation. There were a couple of hiccups, but John handled each one, taking full responsibility and correcting the issue within a day or two. I will say, being such a small company and only working primarily on weekends, it can be a bit of a wait to have your install done. However, when the date is set they are there on it. It was recent, so no report on savings yet, but I'm not expecting much, given that we've had mostly rain ever since:(. I'm looking forward to the summer months! We couldn't be happier with them and their service. Truth be told, I'm always willing to pay even more for a positive human interaction...for amazing customer service. Reuben and his crew did stellar work. I can't think of anything that could have been done better. Reuben talked to us at length beforehand, explaining everything and calculating how many panels we should get (though we ended up getting a few extra since they were so inexpensive and we figured we might use more electricity in the future.) They installed everything over the weekend and Reuben came back and dealt with the inspector a few days later. I was particularly impressed by what a neat job they did on the wiring in the conduit that comes down the side of the house to the inverter. Every time I walk past I admire it. SunWork is an awesome non-profit solar company whose goal is to make solar accessible, even to homeowners who don't use a lot of energy. When we first moved into our house, I was really curious about solar/renewable energy, but thought it would be too cost-prohibitive. I reached out to about 5 different companies and SunWork's quote was by far the lowest. At different stages of the process (preliminary questions, system design, install, etc.) I worked with different people at SunWork, including Doug, Mario, and Reuben. All of them were super helpful, easy to work with, and very responsive. They ended up installing 5 solar panels on our house in about 1.5 days and so far everything is working well. During the install, they actually discovered that our house wasn't grounded properly, so they helped us install a grounding rod as well. Based on their cost, customer service, and quality of work, I would highly recommend SunWork to anyone considering solar. read more

We contracted with SunWork to install our home rooftop solar panels in 2017. The project was delayed by our roofing company, but SunWork was patient and worked with us despite the delay. In early 2018 SunWork coordinated with the roofers to install support posts and then have the roofers come to seal those posts. After that, about 2 weeks later SunWork completed the installation. Reuben coordinated the final county inspections and was very helpful in getting all necessary PG&E agreements finalized. SunWork did a terrific job and were super helpful.
