Our stay at the James Buchanan Hotel exceeded every expectation. From the moment we arrived, we…read morewere greeted warmly by the manager, who even offered to carry my suitcase upstairs and place it in our room. That level of genuine hospitality set the tone for the entire visit. The hotel offers free, private on-site parking, which was an added bonus. Our room was impeccably clean, beautifully appointed, and the crisp white linens made it feel fresh, comfortable, and inviting. Before dinner, we enjoyed happy hour in the hotel's stunning historic bar. The bartender made me one of the best Old Fashioneds I've ever had--perfectly crafted and absolutely delicious. We chose to dine at the hotel's restaurant after a local enthusiastically recommended it, mentioning that the chef had earned Michelin-star recognition and insisting we try the crab cakes. We ordered the crab appetizer and a locally sourced beef steak dinner, and every bite was outstanding. It was one of those meals you'll be talking about long after you've gone home. Dinner was served on the picturesque back patio beneath a vine-covered pergola, with live music creating the perfect romantic atmosphere. One thing that truly stood out was seeing the hotel owners working alongside their staff throughout the evening. Their pride in the property and commitment to exceptional service were evident in every detail. The James Buchanan Hotel offers the perfect combination of historic charm, impeccable hospitality, and unforgettable dining. Whether you're looking for a relaxing getaway or simply an exceptional meal, I cannot recommend this place highly enough. We will absolutely be back.

If you like clean bathrooms, functioning HVAC, and nice quiet bedrooms, do not stay at this hotel…read more And when you report issues to management, they have only excuses or don't bother replying. We stayed here for two nights in December. At first glance everything seemed very nice in Room 205 but then, in looking at the bathroom, I realized there was lots of dust and hair behind the bathroom door (photo). I was going to ignore it, but then we couldn't get the HVAC to work, so I went down to the front desk. The desk manager showed us a second room (same problems), a third room (same problems with the addition of brown spots on the ceiling). We were given a fourth room - a suite - on the third floor. This room was not updated like the first few rooms but at least the HVAC was working, and at first glance everything seemed clean. At this point it was 10pm so we got ready for bed. I looked into the shower only to find a big gob of black hair in the drain (photo). I decided to leave it for the morning. We shuffled into bed (photo) and listened to the windows rattling in the windy night along with all the traffic of Main Street (surprisingly a lot). In the morning, I showed the front desk a photo of the shower situation and asked for housekeeping to take care of it. He said they don't have housekeeping on weekends. What?! I've never stayed at a major hotel chain without daily housekeeping. Also an AI search of the hotel on Facebook mentions "daily housekeeping." Each room contained a letter (photo) from Jefferey Shepherd, VP of Operations, urging patrons to text or call with any issues. I texted him for the first time during our stay (with no reply). We avoided the shower stall horror show and showered at a nearby relatives' place - super inconvenient. We also noticed a dirty chair in the living room - like someone peed on it (photo). That night we tried watching TV but couldn't get any of the three remotes to work (photo). At least we got a decent night's sleep the second night. Sunday morning we went to the front desk to check out, rang twice for the clerk (photo) but he never showed up, so I left the room keys on his chair and left. Skip the cold breakfast, which is all they offer, and walk up the block to One North (photo) for a hot meal and delicious gourmet coffee. I called Jeff Shepherd after returning home. We had a cordial conversation and he offered to refund our stay (over $300) which I gratefully and thankfully accepted. One week later, still no refund so I texted him, which he read and again didn't bother replying. Another week passed, I called him again and left a voicemail asking why he changed his mind about the refund. More time passed and I emailed the company that manages the James Buchanan - Capital Hotels. STILL no response, so I'm forced to include a mention of the awful customer service in addition to the dirty hotel. I don't mind old, historic places, but they shouldn't be this dirty, and the HVAC should be in good working condition. Do yourself a favor and stay at one of the other hotels down the street. I know we will.

My mom talked about this property for years. She lived in Pennsylvania and attended a wedding and…read moreshe was always convinced I'd love it here. I was living in California and every time I'd get back to the east coast, she'd suggest going here. Unfortunately, we never got to experience a visit here together after she suddenly passed from an aggressive cancer. It became my goal to come here and visit with her on my mind. Years later, I moved back to the east coast and booked a random weekend just for fun. I'm married now with kids so we made the drive here to experience all that the Omni had to offer. I've stayed at other Omni resorts and I wavered on what this place would land on ratings wise. Overall, it's a beautiful hotel with a lot of history that I loved learning about. My kids absolutely loved the indoor pool. It is as gorgeous as the photos look. It's a nice spot, especially when it's a chilly Pennsylvania day like when we visited. With that said, there isn't a ton to do here with kids. It was the perfect amount of time for us, but met other families who were struggling to keep their own kids occupied. There are some really nice trails around the property, which are perfect. And you can also check out some free toys and games from one of the shops inside. That said, if you don't have great weather, options can be limited. We didn't get a chance to visit the spa, but the space looks amazing from what I saw online. The rooms were spacious and well set up for a family. We ate at a few of the restaurants on site. Service was mostly on point though the tavern was really off. Our server was perfectly friendly but pretty much messed up the entire order. I would go back but not sure I'd be eager to rush back anytime soon. We did enjoy the experience but I think a few bumps could be worked out such as helping with our luggage upon arrival. We were able to valet but couldn't find anyone to help us with the bags and the rolling carts don't easily go over the front door to get inside. Between me and my partner, we were able to make it work. But it's those small details that make a property really stand out.

Afterward, we had lunch at the Frontier Tavern, and everything was fantastic. The atmosphere was warm and inviting, the food was absolutely delicious, and the service was outstanding. Every member of the staff we interacted with went above and beyond to make our visit special. From the spa to lunch, the entire experience was memorable and truly exceeded our expectations. It was the perfect way to celebrate a birthday, and we can't wait to come back again.
