I always knew that this Hampton Inn was in Wisconsin, and chose it because it was the cheapest deal I could find at the time. And no, I'm not sure why Duluth hotel properties are so relatively expensive. We found the Hotel relatively easy to find, although the adjacent building/road construction made the directions (and turns) a little more challenging. Getting back into Duluth Minnesota (for Dinner later) was fairly easy and port/lake scenic. If there's a next time, I'll continue up the North Shore and make my stop more that a one night visit. The Hampton property reflects the modern refurbishments within the chain, which I found clean, comfortable and welcoming. Upon check-in, the most important tasks were: 1. Shower (!) 2. Change into Clean Clothes (Yes, the ride down from Ely was a little "ripe") 3. Separate and Pack Up the "Canoe Clothes" 4. Make Dinner Reservations (Grandma's) 5. Chat with Gayle again (the first call upon return from the Lake) I also got a good night sleep, enjoyed the free hot breakfast (and friendly staff) in the morning, and hung out with Bob/Bird and Jeff before we all went our separate ways.

However The Cobblestone, Fawn and Kaytee saved the day. They were able to get us two rooms fairly close to each other and we had a lovely stay. Basically, if the price is right, we will stay here. Location - The hotel is located in the bay/harbor area right off of Lake Superior which gives it some very nice views of the surrounding area and wildlife. There isn't much on the island but you are only a few miles away from Superior which offers numerous shops and restaurants. There is a nice little park at the entrance of the island that you can walk to. The trail is nice to walk when the weather is nice out, they have done a lot of native restoration in the area and it is full of wild flowers during that time. Also, go and see the last remaining whaleback boat - the SS Meteor. You can walk around the vessel for free or tour inside for a small entrance fee. Rooms & Building - Let's get it out of the way right now, the resort is older and dated. Is it in terrible condition? No. But it isn't brand new either. The rooms are at least clean and comfortable. It probably depends on what room you get but the rooms I have gotten have always been in good shape and clean. The beds have been comfortable and everything in the room has been in good working order. There are signs of wear and tear inside and outside but keep in mind (especially the outside) that Lake Superior winters are absolutely brutal and beat the tar out of everything in its wake. Amenities - The hotel has a large pool/hot tub area in the middle of the building. The pool is usually heated to a nice temp and the hot tub has good jets. There is a small arcade attached to the pool area. Lots of table seating for group gatherings. Food - There is no free breakfast options available but there is a restaurant/bar onsite. I have never tried it out but I have heard good things from the locals. Vibe - Easy going and super friendly staff. No complaints. Reality vs. Online - Pictures that I saw on their website and online matched the quality and condition of the hotel and rooms in-person. No surprises. Price & Final Verdict - Once again, if the price is right (I normally try to stay here around the $100 a night mark), then my family will choose this place. We have enjoyed our stays here. Although not the flashiest place to stay in the Duluth area, it is one of the more affordable options out there that offers a nice setting and amenities list.

We also noticed lots of construction workers in the parking lots drinking at night. Not a big deal but could be intimidating to some travelers out on a walk or arriving after dark. Maintenance is lacking. The old carrier ac units are noisy and would freeze up regularly. Rooms are older and in a semi maintained state. Old furniture showing wear and definitely not a white glove clean experience. Breakfast is no longer included but available for purchase. This is a property that is right at the point of needing to be demolished vs repaired. Sad as it is a pretty location with the marina and water on two sides. Overall this would be like an interstate Super 8 property for comparison. Adequate for a nights rest but if vacationing with a family I would suggest looking at a nicer property on the Duluth side.

They have the requisite mini frig and microwave, current model TV. No in room coffee, no complimentary breakfast, but there is a restaurant in the lobby open for breakfast and lunch six days and dinner or Friday. More paperwork to check in than there would be a a Ritz Carlton, but they operate in an old-timey way, and what's wrong with that? A choice of bars and restaurants on Tower Avenue which runs in front of the hotel. Yes, I'd stay there again.

I can speak and offer opinions with particularity and knowledge about hospitality. Unfortunately, lately, service and attention to detail have declined significantly. Perhaps due to cutting corners and not giving travelers what they deserve. Remember, people look for that little corner that somehow makes them feel close to home. I was very surprised and delighted to find this place. I didn't expect such personalized, friendly, and professional service. When I checked into the condo, I was pleasantly surprised. Large, comfortable, well-appointed, and with very tasteful details in the decor. Very well thought out. The privacy of the unit (305B) is excellent. The kitchenware and utensils are of very high quality. But the most important thing is the cleanliness and hygiene. A very rare bird, or Rara Avis, to find. I hope they continue like this. Especially with the bedding and towels. I wish them the best. Just one detail. They should have at least one unit with a shower for disabled guests, not for me, but for other people. Thank you.

That said, the South Pier Inn was a remarkable surprise. To be fair, we sprung for one of the large rooms that was adjacent to the Aerial Lift Bridge. The room wasn't cheap, but there is nothing like looking at your window and seeing a thousand foot tanker sailing by a stone's throw away. Amazingly, the rooms are so well insulated from noise you could miss the whole thing. Fortunately, the hotel offers ship spotting calls, even in the wee hours of the morning so you don't miss a passing vessel (if that's your thing). The front desk staff was a textbook example of Minnesota nice. Such lovely people! And the simple continental breakfast (which I also usually hate) included wild rice cranberry bread made at an 80 year old institution. We even had the misfortune of booking a room when the small parking lot was being redone. However, the hotel managed that escapade very well, providing off site parking and a shuttle service to our car. It was such a treat to be able to walk over the bridge into the canal district, for a quick dinner without a drive, and to have such a well kept home base for our Minnesota adventure. My husband and I have stayed at 5 star hotels all over this country on the 4 month journey and I can honestly say this is the only one I could come back to.
