So, yesterday an opportunity came up and I got a ticket for an apiary tour at HeartStone Ranch in Goleta California, where Nick the founder of Super Bee Rescue manages an apiary as well as a sustainable farm. The tour was way beyond my expectations as it offered so much education about an apiary operation! We packed a Toro 4W Drive with basic necessities and headed towards the hives a few hundred feet away. In the few acres that we toured yesterday, we saw quite a few healthy goats acting as weed-wackers and they greeted us. We also saw a couple of horses, lots of happy chickens and roosters, a vegetable garden and many fantastic old oak trees. It was a typical ocean front overcast day, with fresh air and aroma of California chaparral floating down the Los Padres National Forest. We started the tour visiting several Langstroth hives where Nick needed to conduct his routine inspection of the hives. We pulled frames loaded with bees and inspected each frame, looked at eggs and larva and pinpointed the queen in each hive. Nick showed us how he combines frames with or without foundations inside the same hive. This went on and we inspected about five hives. Then we did the same with Top Bar Hives. As we were riding the 4WD to the next stop, Nick showed me where he installs his hand made Sworm Boxes. I saw at least five of such boxes in different location with bees buzzing around them. Our next stop was where Nick manages his Nuke Cells that are ready to be expanded to a large hive or have them ready for customers to pick up in a couple of weeks in April. Nukes are basically 50% smaller than a Langstroth hive with five frames inside the box. That followed by a very exciting demonstration of how Nick has converted two nuke boxes with a small sectional Top Bar positioned in the middle as a tunnel connected at each end to the nukes. The bees at their convenience will migrate from the Nuke boxes into the sectional Top Bar and later they will be transferred to a larger Top Bar hive. Trust me you can't find that on YouTube! Another surprise and a bonus was to see how a Warre Hive box is added to a Langstroth Hive to act as a second Deep Box in order to start the first stage of building a Warre Hive which is highly demanded among Nick's customers in Santa Barbara County. We then packed and went back to where the tour began two hours earlier. There we could buy the tools and equipment that we needed for our own hives back home and a great opportunity to buy a jar of unfiltered raw avocado honey from Nick's special reserve or as they call in French "appellation controlee". All things considered this tour is recommended not only for beekeepers or beehavers, but for anyone who wants to know more about bees. I compare this Apiary Tour to the best of wine tasting tours that I had attended in my time, with the main difference being that you can drive home sober and with much more respect for bees and the nature.
