Super JJ Fish & Chicken 1510 Market Street Bloomington, IL. 61701 Altoona, IA 1:02am 12/1/19 I would have bet my left testicle that I had already written a review for JJ's but my search to update my previous showed that I hadn't. I was in Bloomington on business because why the hell else would someone choose to go there. It's not a bad town, not at all, but it's five hours away from my favorite person. She thought about joining me but her business kept her in Des Moines. This would be the fourth time that I visited a JJ's, my third here in Bloomington. My other visit was to the JJ's that was briefly located in Merle Hay mall in DSM but unfortunately it didn't make it. Location is everything. If your looking for healthy, then JJ's should not be on your radar. If your looking for delicious, well then you've found it. A little over halfway in my drive from Des Moines to Bloomington, my boss called me to remind me of my past travel indulgences and to "take it easy" with the expense report. He knows that I am fan of lower end hotels in the seedier parts of town and normally higher end restaurants yet felt compelled to mention that he could certainly afford a steak or two. JJ's doesn't serve steak but they do serve fried catfish and chicken wings which are two of my favorite foods and at very reasonable prices. When I finally arrived in Bloomington and checked into the hotel, I was met in the lobby by my right hand man "Stones" who was still recovering from a pretty serious injury but wanted to get back to work even though he was somewhat limited. He was ready to eat and wanted to go to the place that I hate almost as much as genital warts and it was barely after 5 pm at this point. "Go right ahead. Enjoy yourself. I've got a few personal things I need to take care of then I'm going to JJ's" A few phone calls later and I'm driving through parts of Bloomington that I probably shouldn't be in, procuring things that I probably shouldn't be procuring but what is life if not one big adventure. Judge me all you want but I'll tell you this. The drugs that my doctor has me on are far, far worse then any pharmaceutical enhancements I may enjoy. When I arrived at JJ's it was pushing 9 pm and there was a gentleman at the counter waiting for his order who sat down at a table when I walked in. I was greeted immediately but took a few minutes to look at the menu which is posted in the wall behind the counter. Not really sure why I did because I already knew what I wanted, a 2/4 combo (2 catfish fillets, 4 wings) and breaded mushrooms. A few things that you should know about JJ's 1. It smells like grease. It doesn't take a Rhodes Scholar to figure this one out. Just about everything is deep fried and why wouldn't it be. Remember it's deliciousness that we are seeking. 2. This isn't fast food so be prepared to wait. Everything is prepared as it is ordered so be patient. and 3. Be prepared to answer the question "Would you like lemon pepper" multiple times with an enthusiastic "Yes I would, thank you" I excused myself to the boom boom room while they prepared my order and dearsweetbabyjesus I was almost knocked out by the fog of stench that filled my nostrils when opening the door. It smelled like Miley Cyrus took a colossal dump after being tag team fisted by Mel Gibson and Hulk Hogan. How it hadn't wafted out into the dining area was a miracle unto itself. I said nothing when returning to the counter after doing my business and they were just finishing up my order. "Sir, would you like lemon pepper" "Yes Sir I would, thank you very much" I paid my bill and took the food back to the room with me but not before stopping at the c store and grabbing a couple packs of Pall Mall orange talls, and a 3 Dt Dr Peppers. It was all delicious and the hot pepper cheese balls were absolutely the right choice. No fork or napkins in the bag kinda pissed me off so I had to eat the coleslaw with my pocket knife because I was to lazy to walk the 50 feet from my room to the lobby to grab one. I placed an order online for pick up at 3 o'clock in the afternoon and my order was ready on time. The ambience of the restaurant left something to be desired. The front door was open, the back door was open and there was no air conditioning . There really isn't any place for customers to sit and be comfortable. There was only one employee and he was running the deep fryer and was also running the checkout area. I ordered a four piece all white chicken dinner with Hush puppies for a total of $20. When I got home and opened the box I had one large chicken breast one small chicken breast and two wings. The chicken was cooked and tasty however the breading was soggy and not crisp. I can't say I was overly pleased with the chicken, but the hush puppies were to die for. It was my first time there and I probably won't return. Love looking for local places when I travel. Saw the sign for fish and chicken on the exit sign from the highway. Wasn't a chain and fish sounded like a great lunch. So I stopped in. Had the 2 piece catfish special. It was great, Just like my dad's.! It came with fries and a can of soda for 9 bucks. The person who helped me was very friendly. If you're looking for good fried chicken, look no further! I've passed by this place so many times, and today I pulled in. It was a definitely the right decision. After ordering at the counter, I actually saw my chicken being dredged in flour BY HAND, then put in to fry. Took maybe 15 minutes, and came with fries, & bread. My order included legs, thighs, wings, & gizzards. It was WONDERFUL!! Light breading, and perfectly seasoned! I'll definitely be back! (I will probably call in advance next time). Lunch out with hubby after getting drivers license renewed. This place is in the same building as the DMV and they also have a second location in town on Hershey just north of Empire. It's a simple place. Order at the counter but the great thing about it is they hand batter the fish and chicken pieces after ordering. It really does make a difference on the fresh product Hubby loves liver and it's not something you can find just anywhere so we had chicken livers and walleye. Both came with fries. We also ordered corn nuggets onion rings and mac n cheese bites. The sides came from a frozen bag but the corn nuggets were really tasty. We will definitely return. Ordered online. Came to pick up 30 mins later and they didn't even know I placed an order. All the fried food was just sitting in fryer baskets above the grease, not being kept warm. My order was packed up out of those baskets and was cold and soggy. Staff was rude and not remotely in a hurry even though no one was even in there. read more

This was my first visit and JJ's made it into my regular lunch rotation. I ordered the 4 wings and gizzards combo. Wow! They don't separate the drumettes from the wing tips so you really get 8 wings and they were perfectly deep fried and tasted fantastic. The gizzards were cooked perfect. In fact they were the best most tender gizzards I've had in 15 years. Even the fries were good. I will go back and try the shrimp and catfish. Heck, I might even order delivery tonight. Yea! Yes its fried food, but whatever your weekly/monthly alotment is, consider this place in the regular rotation. This would really be three and a half stars for my first meal there, allowing an extra half star for being seemingly good folks, excited to be bringing Chicago-area epicureal franchises to central Illinois. I got the 'top of the line' entre (and quintessential oxymoron) 'Jumbo Shrimp' with hot sauce on the side. They were a tad pricey, but pretty good size and I'm pretty sure there were 8 of them. The cornmeal-breading expertly engulfed the shrimp, yet the finished product was not very greasy and the flavor was uniquely (for Blm anyway) tasty. Fries were OK. I agree that the coleslaw gets warm and the bread accompaniment is of the Cub Foods variety, but the hot sauce was spot-on and I'm really impressed by the many ($4.99) lunch combos and the various fish options - perch, tilapia, catfish several ways...I truly look forward to my next visit. read more

Caution seating is limited so not good for large groups. I have tried the chicken wings with lemon pepper and hot sauce, and the ocean perch both were very good. Batter on fish is excellent. worth the drive over to the west side. read more

When in Rome eat like the Romans. When in Bloomington, IL eat like they do. This is a very no frills soul food kind of place. Clean, fast, and very friendly service. If you drive a truck, it is a very short walk from the pilot. The owner recommend the lemon pepper and the "secret" recipe sauce. He knows what he is talking about. Get it! Stopped to gas up off the highway and saw their sign so decided to check it out. Ok some reviews on the place are pretty bad but mannnnnn I got the Buffalo chicken sandwich and wish I ordered 2! Great batter and would put it up against the big chain chicken sandwiches. Support the small business people. The food was great here! I'd suggest going around lunch time on the weekends and to place a carryout ahead of time. It takes 20-30 minutes as they do cook your food fresh. I get the three piece chicken tenders which are good, and my dad gets the 1/2 chicken which is also great. The service is friendly, the place is clean, but the only thing I dislike is the seating. Live in Arizona but retired Police Officer from Indiana. Been on the Highway two days. We ordered the large catfish filets & two sauces. Have had JJ's in Chicago & Gary & Dallas. First no Air Conditioning. Yes I'm aware of the frying of food all day. Both Pops/sodas were warm. Open the container. There where three large pieces fried in Old Grease. One slice of bread for three pieces fried hard. Who asked for that. The fries(No Comment) There was one mild sauce in the container. I asked him how much is the hot sauce. He replied .50 cent. This is were it got worst. I pulls out my debit card & asked my wife to go get two sauces.She replied I thought you ordered one of each not hearing him say .50 cent. They offer several different types of fish - catfish, tilapia, Jack Salmon, as well as fried chicken, chicken wings and much more. Most of the meals come in either small or large orders. Just a word of advice - order the large! My husband and I both got small orders and wished we had gotten more! My first visit I had the fried catfish and my husband the shrimp. The catfish filets came as two large filets with coleslaw, fries, and bread. The fish was cooked perfectly very light and pipping hot. My husband's shrimp were the same way. His small order gave him 8-10 large shrimp with fries and bread as well. Don't forget to try the pizza puff - it's like a pizza in a small calzone type pastry that's absolutely delicious! They also have a variety of desserts and other appetizers such as mozzerella sticks for those wanting something more snacky! The restaurant was packed with families getting food to go. Extremely rude and unprofessional behavior by Derek (identified himself as manager) and the old cashier woman. Food was not ready for pick up at promised time. Tried to reach owner to complain but he did not pick up his phone either. I ordered a tray of 30 chicken pieces for pick up over the phone. When I arrived the food was not ready at the promised time. They took the payment right away, and acted if the food is just about ready. Made me wait half an hour. I think they just started cooking once I got there and paid, rather when I called and ordered. When I complained about the delay and asked for a refund since I was getting late, they refused to cancel and refund my money, and lied and made excuses saying that the "chicken pieces are larger so its taking longer", or they "just started their shift and were not aware of this pending order." When I asked for the ordered to be cancelled and my money refunded, Derek said that "now I'm gonna make you wait". Won't be dealing with this business again. read more
