We walked in and the Tasty Crab's decor is that of your typical seafood restaurant. We were greeted at the hostess stand / to-go area. We inquired and were given menus. We ordered, received the check and waited on our food. The food arrived promptly much quicker than we expected. It was fresh and hot. The fried oysters and fries were good! My Mom and I ordered bags and they were not seasoned enough for us. We had to had add seasoning to it but the food itself was prepared well and not overcooked. We're from Savannah so. The calamari was nicely crisped, though the meat itself was somewhat tough. The chicken tenders, unfortunately, did not have much of a chicken flavor or texture. The restaurant was out of king crab legs, which was disappointing since that was one of the main reasons for our visit. We stopped in while visiting our son, who attends college about two hours north and enjoys seafood boils. Service was mixed. Our server was not particularly friendly and did not take our order accurately. However, my son mentioned that the server who assisted him on a previous visit was friendly and welcoming, so perhaps our experience was an exception. The dining area appeared somewhat dingy but served its purpose. Overall, while the food was decent, the service and atmosphere left something to be desired. First visit and we will be back. The food was excellent along with the service. Be prepared to get messy as it's like your own personal fish boil. Food arrives in a plastic bag and your server dumps your meal in a pan smothered in butter or your choice of seasoning (mild to wild). You get a bib and plastic gloves and you'll need them. We'd been to their location in suburban Chicago, and loved it, but didn't realize the Bloomington location existed or was the original location. We literally stumbled across this one thanks to a combination of Yelp and my husband seeing the sign. We loved it just as much as the Chicago (Skokie) one. Both have excellent food, friendly and gracious staff, and spacious, comfortable dining areas. This time I tried the shrimp (no heads) in the mild butter and garlic sauce, and added sausage. I always hold the potatoes, and they give me extra corn to compensate. Everything was delicious, and I had plenty of leftovers (two containers full) for a later snack and meal. The cocktails are also very tasty. We tried several, and all were good. We've added this to our list of must-go places next time we make one of our semi-annual trips to Bloomington. read more

I really wanted to try this place but after reading the reviews I know it is just a dump of a converted failed fake chinese restaurant with the same chislers operating it behind a new name and sign out front. Bloomington seems to be a hot bed of failed restaurants operated by foreigners that sre all about the profits and not about the quality of the food or service. This is a family run business with very helpful and attentive staff. We ordered the #3 Special which included crab legs, shrimp, sausage, corn on the cob and potatoes delivered in a bag with an excellent sauce. The crab legs were quite good as were the sausages. The shrimp were, however, were cooked to the point at which they were rubbery. Likewise the corn was cooked to the point that rendered it to gush. The potatoes were the star of the boil bag. Omigoodness-the food is Delicious! You build your meal from multiple choices of seafood and sausage. We had crab legs, shrimp, and clams. It automatically comes with boiled potatoes and corn on the cob. You then choose the seasoning: you can have very mild to very spicy. We like the tasty special; it's a mixture of all the seasonings. It's very messy, but fun to eat. They do provide bibs, gloves, and wipes. We also had hush puppies. The hush puppies were pretty yummy too. If you have a non-fish eater in your party, they have options for them too. It's very reasonably priced. The service was excellent! The restaurant was nice and clean. read more

The Tasty Crab is very similar to a place back where I live that serves just seafood "Cajun" style. The menu is very similar where the main entrees are various seafood served by the pound or half pound with potatoes and corn on the cob. You choose your seasoning and spice level and they bring it to you in a bag with a bucket to put the shells in. Bibs are optional. I find it ironic that this place is right next door to Red Lobster. While I've never had a bad meal at Red Lobster, given the price range between the two, I will hands down pick The Tasty Crab every time unless Red Lobster has a really good promotion. I opted for 1 lb of snow crab legs and 1 lb of "no-head" in shrimp (deveined but still with shell). Seasoning-wise, I went for the Tasty Special (which is all their seasonings) and mild spice. All I can say is holy cow, the Tasty Special is so good, I would have loved to have some kind of the bread to dip it in afterwards. Just think of Red Lobster's scampi sauce but 1000x better. The shrimp was very good and so was the snow crab legs. I was very impressed with the snow crab, as there are some places that overcook it to where the meat is non-existent or rips to shreds when you attempt to pull the meat out. Every crevice had a nice morsel. Now the reason I didn't give it 5 stars is because it's pricey. The price on the seafood varies. At the time of this review, the shrimp (no-head) was $18/pound and snow crab was $25/pound. My final bill was $47.60 including tax (I had water). This is more of a "treat yo'self" place because I couldn't afford eating here everyday (despite wanting to). read more

This place is my favorite sea food restaurant. I've been many times and every time it gets better. It's so delicious. For 2 bags it cost about $100. Which isn't to expensive considering what type of food we ordered. Plus the food and experience was worth it. The staff are very friendly and always came to our table to check on us. I brought my 11 month old and it was nice that they had simple things on their menu for small children so he got French fries and enjoyed them. You also get a good portion of food for everything. The drink I ordered was a suggestion from the waitress and it was super good. The restaurant was quiet when we went, probably because they had just opened for the day. It was also clean. A couple of Yelp reviews mentioned it used to be an Asian restaurant, and I had my doubts as to its quality; suffice to say, very pleased. In town for work and ate here for dinner on a Tuesday. It wasn't crowded so we sat immediately. Service was outstanding. Our servers were very attentive and our water was never empty. Food came out quickly (not too quickly as I had read in another review) and was DELICIOUS! We had the crab cake appetizer which I highly, highly recommend!! Chunks of real crab! High quality crab cake served with yummy aioli sauce! For our entrees we had the snow crab legs, shrimp (no head), and crawfish all with the "special" seasoning and mild spice. Food was cooked perfectly and the special seasoning was SO tasty! The mild spice wasn't actually spicy at all, which is great for me but if you like heat you'll be disappointed. Have been wanting to try this place out for a while. Getting seafood in a state that's not close to the sea is always sketch. The prices are ridiculously high for crab. No claims except in a chowder, which tasted like it was from a can. The salad was from a bag. The crab cakes were not fresh, and filled more with bread crumbs than actual crab, like what you'd get in the freezer section of the store. Not worth the price. Going by the name, thought I would have an etouffee option. Cajun=fried and boiled here. Started with crab cakes, pre-formed wih heavy filler. Similar to what I can get in a typical grocery store. Loved the option to order 1/2 lbs combo (at least 2) to try more than one thing. Shrimp was good sized, crawfish very small and some mushy. The cajun, hot sauce was really good. Had a little kick but not too much. Husband ordered blue crab (overcooked) and snow crab (okay, not fresh). Really liked his sauce - medium heat, 'special' where it is a mix of the 3 choices. If you have no other seafood options, okay. Total bill $51.50 (2 combos, crab cake, no alcohol). I'll wait until I head South and get the good stuff. read more

Decided to try a new seafood for our anniversary today. The atmosphere was relaxing, clean, updated with modern music playing in the background. The service was very friendly, informative and attentive. The food was tasty and the portions were plenty. The prices were fair. Now for the drinks. We went here with a group of 6 to celebrate my niece's bday. I've never been here and am not a huge seafood fan but it was her pick so we went. I'm kinda a food snob lol! don't like to just eat at a place...I enjoy the whole dining experience! The decor is weird...it's supposed to be a Cajun seafood restaurant but it definitely used to be an Asian restaurant because some of that is still around. There's even a koi pond and soy sauce on the bar lol. And not-so-great ginger dressing was the default dressing that came with salad (why?) Then there's random license plates and records all over the wall so it's like a confused theme and I didn't like it haha. 3 stars. The service was fast and attentive but borderline rude. Our server didn't crack a smile the whole time and seemed like she didn't want to be there. Also, when we told her it was my niece's birthday she just said, "oh okay, happy birthday" and moved along. I went to the front to make sure they could bring her a cake or something. Then when she brought it she just plopped it on the table (while my niece was still in the middle of cracking crab legs) and left. There were pics all over the walls of people celebrating bdays so thought we would get one...no such luck.3 stars. Their saving grace was the food...BOMB. Terrible customer service. Food was very cold and I knew it was when I felt the bag from my pick up order. I explained to the manager that I'm pregnant and I can't eat raw or undercooked meat and it has to be hot for me to eat it. She responded to me "it's hot I don't know what your talking about what do you mean cold food" very disrespectful and sure enough when I got home I couldn't even crack the crab leg because it was so undercooked and the meat in the inside as raw and cold. FOR ME TO BE A PREGNANT WOMAN AND I WAS IGNORED BEFORE I EVEN PAYED IS CRAZY. I couldn't gotten very sick and would've put my baby at high risk. I called them as soon as I ate it and she didn't care at all. Didn't try to accommodate didnt even apologize. When I came in for the refund I asked for their corporate number and she gave me a business card as if it was some sort of joke or something.
