This is going to be long…read more... I'm not quite sure what brought me to Sunshine Corners. I would almost call it serendipity, but I was certainly searching for something, I just didn't know exactly what. I had a day off and had spent the earlier part of it wandering, looking for any remaining independent produce stands, butcher shops, or just something that felt like it would nourish and heal me because I had been feeling....well? physically, emotionally, existentially, and psychologically, like absolute crap. Historically I've spent years independently studying nutrition and biochemistry, herbalism and traditional medicine, but over the years I'd strayed from those things and lost my way. All this to say I may have forgotten some things but I recognize when someone else knows their stuff. I wandered into Sunshine Corners, originally for a good sandwich and maybe some produce. What immediately struck me was how comforting this place was, and how much it felt like the old school apothecaries or coop's before they became adulterated by mainstream capitalist influences. Stay with me here. I overheard Tony talking to one of the people at the front desk and immediately realized "ok, that guy knows his stuff". Meekly, when he had a moment, I walked over to him and basically, in a sort of desperate manner, laid out my litany of aches and pains and mysterious ailments, expecting an abrupt hand waving answer. That is not what I got. Tony spent what might have been somewhere between 45 minutes and an hour with me, patiently asking me questions and pulling out reference literature. He recognized things in me that no one else had been able to see, and pointed me in a direction that has allowed me to focus on actually getting better rather than just collapsing in frustration. Tony, if you're reading this, the time you spent helping me meant so much to me. Your years of wisdom made a huge impact, but more importantly, your humanity.

I had needs, based on a protocol that I researched, and Tony offered alternatives, claiming them to be superior. When I pushed back sticking to items I was more sure about, he seemed put-off, stand-offish. The store was super busy, people asked him for advice, he handed them bottles, they paid and left. It was a little weird. I didn't mind at all that he went off to help others, but he avoided contact with me from there out. As I was leaving after spending nearly $200 cash, I shouted, "Thanks Tony," and his "bye" was somewhat of a good-riddance. a couple days later; the one alternative that I took his advice on, I reacted horribly to. When I called the store to find out if he had a specific brand I wanted, he shiftily attempted to sell the same one I reacted to already, so I explained that I bought that one on his suggestion and reacted horribly. He was quite aloof, saying [the brand I wanted was] "not right, now" [in stock]. It's not that I won't shop there anymore, but I don't feel welcome, and will consider other options moreso now, but for sure will not be engaging with Tony when I do. I go out of my support local businesses that don't have political pull. Don't get me wrong... I witnessed that Tony is super kind to those that take his advice. His customers are his fans. I just feel shafted. Maybe he can recommend a cream for that ;)

Staying at the hotel across the street I came here to add to my Peanut Butter collection and pick up a couple of Protein bars as they were having a buy one get one 50% sale on the entire store which has a large inventory. The store is well laid out staff were very welcoming. Browsing the store I noticed they had a free sample display of hemp hearts.. you don't see these samples to help yourself in my local store's which was nice and as I like the product on my Greek Yogurt picked one up to take back the hotel along with my 2 Nut Butters and handful of Protein bars. It's a supplements store. And despite a 2008 study, and others that followed, that proved people who take supplements shorten their own lives, it remains very popular to coke up on vitamins and fake health products legally only sold as "food supplements" since it's delusional that they contribute to health. Americans spend $20 billion a year to shorten life on the phony promise they're getting healthier! This particular store rather specializes in sports supplements. I don't see that they carry the ones that really help you bulk up (because they're illegal) but everything else they provide. The staff is friendly and hard-sell, because stuff with dubious scientific evidence of efficacy doesn't necessarily sell itself, there has to be a check-out counter person posing as physician trained to defend your health. And never mind that the medical findings for whey and soy protein shakes is they're great for constipation, bloating, nausea, headaches, and the soy content might even duplicate the effects taking female hormones, throwing the hormone levels out of wack, inducing infertility and sexual dysfunction, encouraging fat, and risk of thyroid injury. And then if you really must believe these have all sorts of health benefits despite the equal number of serious risks, just ignore the fact that lab analysis have shown that fewer than 25% of commercial products contain 90% of the amount of active ingredient (isoflavone, a phytoestrogen in soy) promised on the label. So even if it weren't contra-indicated for health, the possibility of getting that alleged benefit from products developed by an unregulated industry provide odds lower than one in four products tried. And that's before realizing the soy isolates used in these products are so harmfully processed as to be stripped of nutritional value in any case! People are nevertheless powerful believers in this and a thousand similar "health" nonsense myths. Total Nutrition really can meet the requirements of such belief systems, whether or not your actual health benefits. You can at least count on the placebo effect if you truly totally believe it's not all folly! And i'm totally in favor of the Ken Unger style gay icon on the roof!
