This review is for a specific stylist - Kris - not the store. I went into this location on 11/25, my stylist checked me in for my appointment, right off the bat she didn't seem very attentive but I let it go since she was finishing up with another client. She confirmed what kind of appointment I had and finished her first client. When she took me to the back to wash my hair I explained how I started using a new shampoo and it wasn't working for my hair very well. Already my stylist was not very talkative - which is fine - but all she responded with was my hair felt dirty. I let it go, I thought she'd understand after I said I didn't like the new shampoo I'd been using recently. She took me back to her chair and I tried to keep up conversation, I asked her if she thought volumizing shampoo was worth it. She answered my question , but she didn't give me any suggestions or what to use or any other advice. Trying to be in good spirits, I asked her if there was any hair trends she liked ... she said no but she did tell a type of haircut she didn't like doing. During my haircut she took time to talk to her coworker and ordered lunch which seemed more important than my haircut. The end result ended up being choppy and unfinished. An hour after the haircut I booked another appointment with the Keaau location and they fixed my hair. They took my information right away and gave it to their district manager. The next day - 11/26 - the manager of this location took my statement and apologized and told me to come back for a refund. She assured me that she would be bringing this up with her district manager and they would talk to this stylist about this incident. Overall, I'm not sure if she was having a bad day or whatever, but this stylist seemed liked she didn't want to be their that day and it felt like she didn't like her job very much. It takes me a lot to go and write reviews or say anything but I don't want anyone else to have to go through what I did. Attached is the photo of the hair cut I left the store with. Went in yesterday and was specific about how I wanted my hair cut. The stylist yes to my request but then ignored it and cut it the way she wanted. So when I reminded her that's not what I asked for, she insisted her way was better and cut more than I wanted. Awful, I had to tell her to stop cutting! I have alopecia, which means I have very little hair and the hair I do have is very thin. I told the hairdresser, Kris, my needs, and exactly how I needed it cut. Long on top and shorter on the sides and back. I asked her if she had ever cut hair like mine and she said she has been a hairdresser for over thirty years! Other than that, she didn't say two words to me. Kris did NOT do what I asked! Now, my hair is sticking straight up in the back at the top, my sideburns and other parts of my hair are not the same length, and my hair looks like ! DO NOT LET HER TOUCH YOUR HAIR! Completely impressed with Supercuts! First of all it's located next to Walmart so there's hundreds of parking spots. I had no trouble finding somewhere to park. It was my first time going to a Supercuts for my haircut. I waited about 30 min to get my appointment, just went over to Walmart to kill some time. There's a lot of little shops in the vicinity. My hair stylists name was Nanimahealan. She was INCREDIBLE! Not only was she super quick with my trim, but she did an excellent job! The oil serum she put in my hair at the end of the haircut made my hair shine so nicely. I'm ever back in Hilo I will definitely come by again. Too expensive, charge for every service. If I'm having a shampoo, blow dry, and style, it should be a complete charge. I paid close to$100.00 on my first ever Supercuts experience, where as all of those services elsewhere cost me $45.00. Also they don't have any senior citizens discount. Never going back to Supercuts. And to top it off I wasn't satisfied with the outcome. Lesson learned. read more

I was going to take pictures of my sister in law for her maternity shoot but she wanted to get her hair cut and dyed prior. She doesn't get her hair dyed anywhere she does it herself at home . But for a hair cut she does go to a salon. She just moved to Hilo and so she came here for the first time. When we came here we were surprised to see that most of the stylists were male. Normally on the mainland Supercuts has mainly women. There is nothing wrong with men stylists but a lot of times they are barbershops that cater to men's hair. My sister in law said she didn't mind since her haircut is short like boys anyways. And from the looks of how many men there were in clients it did look like a barber shop instead of a salon. A man name Len cut my sister in laws hair. She told him she wanted a pixie cut and did not want her hair parted. He parted it anyways. He was very nice but her hair looked a little choppy and not very pixie. Overall this place is more like a barber shop catered to men. If you are a female and wanting a hair cut from someone that caters to women's hair this might not be the place for you. Update~after sitting for 45 minutes they actually started calling for the walk ins that came in like 15-20s after us. App Check-In is pointless. Always have 2-4 people ahead of me. I don't care if that's "how it is". Lame. What's the point? I'm there on time and punctual only to wait as if I walked in? Nothing against the staff it's just there isn't many options on this island and it's aaaaalways a wait. Thurs-Sat there should be a hairdresser at every chair? I work for a living and use technology as the apps available to accommodate this crazy busy and complicated life we have nowadays and this app isn't worth much in that regard. Don't normally post a review unless it's been really good or really bad. In this case, I had an amazing experience with Jessie who cut my hair exactly how I wanted it. I came in and was greeted right away and luckily it wasn't too busy so she was able to seat me right away. Showed her a pic of a medium length hair with short layers to give my hair some volume and that's exactly what she gave me. No unnecessary talks, just went straight to what she needed to do. Always asking me if the length was okay. I have a lot of hair even though it'a pretty thin, but she thoroughly went through it to give me the layers I wanted. Not sure why they get low stars but I think if you come in during a non-busy day then you'll for sure have a better experience. Thanks again Jessie! read more

I had an appointment set for 2:30 and ended up waiting for over an hour before leaving. I can understand a 15-20 minute wait. Maybe even 30. But an hour without being seen with an appointment? That's not even the worst part. They started seeing customers who were walk-ins before me when they came in AFTER I had checked in. What is the point of an appointment if this is how they do things? Not to mention that they didn't even talk to me or acknowledge through this entire time besides a "oh we'll be right with you". So now Supercuts (Makaala) will charge 3.95 OSHA sur-charge to sanitize. No other business that i am aware in Hilo charges a sur-charge to sanitize after each customer.. Today, while waiting for my appointment to get my hair cut, I was pleasantly happy with Jeana's professionalism; taking care of the customers coming into the shop, answering incoming phone calls, taking care of her customers' hair. She had to multitask everything on her own and did very well. She takes her job seriously and I respect her for her stress management skills. She was sincerely apologetic for the wait time but, I was happy to receive help from her. She was patient and helpful when giving advice, so I could make the best decision on what I wanted done for my hair. I am very satisfied with my results and I am ready for the summer. Supercuts in Hawaii is already more expensive than on the mainland at about $24 for a basic haircut after tax, Paying a *little* more is expected in this state but the mainland price is about $16. That's a huge premium! Factoring the already exorbitant prices they have now added a mandatory $4 "sanitation surcharge fee" for spraying down your seat with a disinfectant and giving it a quick wipe down. So now you're charged $28 for a simple men's haircut and are still expected to tip on top of that! They do a reasonably good haircut but are charging what I have payed at high end barber shops on the mainland. This is not a high end barber/salon, everyone knows that. I tipped today but I have a budget for a haircut and with the added sanitation fee I will not be tipping in future until it is removed. read more

Really disappointed. At approximately 3:30pm went into their app to check in. It said "0 minutes" for wait time and I so checked in for first available which was 3:45pm. Normally when we arrive at the shop on time we end up waiting at least 20-40 minutes so today we arrived at 4:15pm and figured we wouldn't wait very long. When we arrived we went to the desk to make sure our (my son and I) names were in the lineup. The receptionist just wrote our names down and didn't immediately check if we were in the lineup. Instead she said "I'm sure it's in there". After waiting for 30 minutes with a lot of other people we saw two barbers/stylists leave for the day. We checked to see how close it was to our turn. We were told that a lot of people walked in before we checked in online. The guy waiting next to me said he checked in online for 4:15 which is AFTER our times of 3:45 and 4:00 yet his name was called before us. After another hour of waiting, two barbers/hairstylists take their break. That was it. We walked out. Whoever is in charge should manage his/her people to adjust to the customer flow/demand. After years of patronizing this Supercuts, today was the last time for me. I'll go inconvenience Mastercuts with my money. read more

At around 1:30pm I made a 3:00pm appointment for my 5 year old to do a simple hair cut with bangs. Got here a few minutes prior to the appointment and was told their running 45 minutes behind. We waited about an hour only to be asked what kind of haircut my daughter wanted, the receptionist than told me that the guys that are now available to cut my daughters hair cannot do bangs, we're now still waiting for the the person who can, it's been 1.5 hours and they close in 30 minutes. This place is no good. My husband came for a haircut, I accompanied him, and am writing this review. Staff are not timely, are unprofessional, and basically seemed lazy. We tried to use the supercuts app on 7/10/15 in order to find out estimated wait time, waited over an hour and a half for our designated chair time. Basically, the app is useless and the staff are always running behind. We decided to give it another shot on 7/11/15 and waited over 50 minutes. The staff took another person before him and kept making excuses that something was wrong with the computer, which by this time we didn't really care. We were just sick of waiting forever and didn't want to walk away without a hair cut. The staff are disorganized and unprofessional, they talk a lot amongst each other which seems fine, until you've got a whole room with people waiting over an hour for a haircut. They seemed to think it was funny to lock another staff member out while they laughed and left other customers waiting. The staff seemed to have a jolly time with one another, but professional communication seems inefficient. Some poor guy who drove all the way from Waikaloa was told he had an appointment with a specific barber at 3 but that employee left at 2:30 pm. He was understandably upset. During my time waiting, at least 4 people left because they waited so long, staff just kept talking and laughing amongst each other. The haircut was mediocre too. I just walked in on a Friday afternoon and was greeted and seated right away (lucky no wait). Minh was the friendly and experienced stylist who helped me. He understood exactly what I wanted with minimal explanation and was quick, but careful. I could tell he knew what he was doing and I praised his confidence. He talked with me while he worked and made sure he did a flawless job. I just moved to the area and usually get hair cuts at beauty schools and other salons (so the value of Supercuts made me give it 4 stars) but Minh provided a five star job! On March 7, I got the worst haircut I have ever had -- and at 64 years old with many, haircuts behind me, that is really saying. Jay R kept me turned away from the mirror the entire he cut my hair. I asked for layers and for my bangs to be trimmed. He gave me a blunt cut and never touched my bangs. When he turned me around to the mirror, I was so horrified that I just wanted to leave. Hilo Supercuts is legit! Coming from the mainland originally, my past experience with Supercuts on th mainland was mediocre at best. So I was hesitant to try Supercuts in Hilo after moving. I was in a bind and needed a haircut quick so I gave it a shot. Glad I did, they have epic barbers. My barber is Eddie. He does amazing haircuts. He has mad skill. I'm 32 and it might be the best haircut I've ever had. read more
