But I have to start with a small heartbreak: my beloved puffy taco is gone. I grew up in San Antonio, Texas, where the puffy taco was created, and it's deeply nostalgic for me. It's not a sope, not a tostada--it's a true puffy taco, light, airy, and unlike anything else. For a long time, Superica made one that came remarkably close to what I grew up with. Unfortunately, after changes in leadership and kitchen management, it quietly disappeared from the menu. That was a real disappointment. That said, I still come back--because the food here is consistently good. The crispy tacos with picadillo are my current favorite. Picadillo (P-I-C-A-D-I-L-L-O) is a traditional Latin dish with many regional variations, and this version reminds me of the one my grandmother used to make in San Antonio. The portions are generous, the flavors are balanced, and the menu offers something for everyone--from enchiladas and chile rellenos to steaks and fresh tableside guacamole. Speaking of guacamole, I'm a purist. I like it simple: avocado, jalapeño, cilantro, lime, garlic--chunky and clean. Superica delivers on that. The chips and salsa are bottomless, the salsa has great depth of flavor, and for those who like heat, they offer a tiny dropper of hot sauce that is smoky, bold, and absolutely not for the faint of heart. The ginger margarita is another standout. It comes with a generous piece of crystallized ginger and has a bright, balanced flavor that makes it easy to order a second one. And if you have room for dessert, do not skip the tres leches cake--rich, decadent, and a perfect way to end the meal. I also appreciate the little touches here: * Friendly, knowledgeable waitstaff * A lively bar area that's great for happy hour * A beautiful outdoor patio that makes al fresco dining feel special * And a fun tradition of sending you home with a packaged Texas praline This South End location is my personal favorite. It feels more adult and relaxed, while the Strawberry Hill location tends to be more family-heavy. Both are good, but the vibe here suits me better. Yes, prices have crept up a bit--as they have everywhere--but the quality, consistency, and atmosphere keep me coming back. And as someone who travels frequently for work across multiple states, I appreciate that Superica maintains a dependable standard wherever I encounter it. I ordered their special Strawberry Margarita with sugar which was good. A basic margarita. I ordered their crispy tacos THE BLANDEST tacos I have ever had in my life. Yes they were crispy, hot and fresh. Served with refried beans and rice, the beans were delicious! Service was prompt. This is a very large restaurant so group sizes have plenty of room. Quality Tex-mex in Charlotte?? Say no more. I was a bit concerned returning since they changed the menu, but was glad to see that the quality of their food has not changed at all. Went for brunch and opted for the Migas Al Carbon (pictured), the queso (pictured) and the chorizo potato and eggs (not pictured). The chicken is perfectly smoked and tender, the tortillas in the Migas were impossibly crispy, and the salsas all offered a brightness and needed pop of acid. I often dream about their Queso, and think it might be Charlotte's best! The cocktails I tried were a little disappointing; for a Tex-Mex restaurant I think a margarita should be over the top good, but theirs was extremely sweet, and lacked any lime flavor. The burger is good and it comes with fries but better options for that nearby at much more reasonable prices.. Service has been hit or miss. Today was miss. I asked what came with the huevos rancheros and was directed back to the menu "it comes with what it says there." What it says is two tortillas, two scrambled eggs and sauce. Can't believe that's the whole thing. Decided to pass,., This trip we asked for a table away from the door as it was very cold out. Our party and every one after us was sat in the front area. I've been to three different Superica locations across various states, and it never disappoints! The chicken is always delish - juicy, flavorful, and smokey. The green salsa.... addictive. My husband and I were on a time crunch for a show at the Spectrum Center, so I made a reservation here about a week ahead of time for dinner. I'm glad I did because they were busy on a Saturday night! We were seated immediately once we arrived. The interior was absolutely beautiful with lots of natural light from the windows. After we were seated, the server brought us free chips & salsa. The chips were good, but the salsa wasn't for me. I love chunky red salsa and they gave us a salsa verde. I ordered a vegetarian Taco Dinner with 1 hard shell and 2 soft. The kitchen initially messed up my order and brought me all hard shells, but the server quickly took it back to the kitchen and it was re-served to me correctly within 2 minutes. The rice & beans were a basic white rice and black beans, but the menu advertised the meal with fried beans and Mexican rice. I didn't care enough to question this substitution as much as I did with the wrong shells. After tasting both sets of shells, I definitely preferred the soft over the hard one. Server was nice and quick. Food had giant portions so you really get your money's worth. I love Tex-Mex food so I'd go to this place again. Stopped to meet some work friends for lunch on a Thursday, safe to say it was an AWESOME choice. Place is situated in an old knitting mill giving the old rustic feeling, but they incorporated a good tex-mex vibe with murals and some southwestern memorabilia. The Catfish Tacos were slightly better, but they also kind of tasted like they were reheated in a rush. I had told the waitress and even another staff member several times that it was my fiancé's birthday and that I would like to put an order in for a dessert. They never came, which I understand is a small oversight on a somewhat busy night, and I do not fault anyone, but I can't lie and say it wasn't disappointing. And honestly, this meal did upset our stomachs a little, so I feel like my overall opinion will be difficult to give considering the meal did not sit well with me. On a recent visit to Charlotte, I decided to try out this Mexican restaurant. They do have a location in my city of Atlanta however I have never been. This restaurant is located in South End area. The parking is meter and on the street! Yeah I know Nonetheless, the restaurant was worth it This restaurant is huge! You could definitely have a large dinner party here if desired. They have 2 different kinds of salsa.. 1 mild and 1 hot. I forgot what everyone else ordered but they enjoyed their food as well. Service was excellent! The restaurant was clean. He also was just pulling every goated server move he could, i would ask for him if you are coming for your first time. The suizas is their most popular but I liked the verde more. The dishes are very overpriced. I did like their fresh salsas and they gave us plenty of refills. Bandit queen and frozen marg were okay. Overall this is a prime location and a fun vibe but the food is just okay for how long it takes to get a table. It also takes a long time to get a drink at the bar.
