It was the lack of follow up that got me. Never seen the ordered cheese dip or requested salsa. Did not see server any where. Other servers busy with their own stations. Wrong order, no ordered items delivered to table, and no service. I left. Why beg? Now, let's talk about Woodlawn. I drove down 77 to this location, after all I am still hungry. Warmly greeted and promptly seated. My server was FANTASTIC. Night and day difference in food and service. Order delivered correctly and promptly. It really can't get much better than this in terms of service, quality, taste, etc. I'm not Mexican so I can't speak to the authenticity, but Azteca has a giant menu with a ton of options. Prices are extremely reasonable especially for the economy. Service is wonderful, chips and salsa were refilled promptly, drinks were tended to, and all with laughs and banter throughout. I got a steak quesadilla, my boyfriend got an enchilada plate. I wanted to try one of their specials but I was craving an easy meal all day! Everything came out fast, hot, and fresh. My spicy margarita had the perfect kick, and his giant mug of beer was ice cold. The restaurant is far bigger than it appears outside. 10 out of 10! Azteca has been my go-to Mexican spot of choice for years! I always bring out-of-town guests here whenever possible. The decor is fun, the staff is always friendly, and I haven't been once where at least one person wasn't being celebrated with a sombrero and a birthday song! The tableside guacamole is a absolute MUST--it's so fresh, and you can customize it exactly to your liking. While I have tried many things on the expansive menu, it is hard not to always choose the arroz con pollo, which is by far the best I have had in town (and in general). The fajitas and pork carnitas are another couple of my favorites. There is truly something for everyone here. Even the bar drinks are delicious and incorporate a lot of fresh citrus. If you can't decide on a drink, I highly recommend trying a variety of margarita flavors in a flight! read more

I just got into town and was staying at a hotel near the Charlotte Airport. I decided to DoorDash from Azteca Mexican Restaurant, and I'm so glad I did! I ordered the burrito meal, and it was delicious. It didn't necessarily look like a traditional burrito in the to-go container, but it came with rice, beans, guacamole, sour cream, lettuce, and pico de gallo, and everything was fresh and flavorful. The portion was huge, so one serving was definitely enough (I couldn't finish it all in one sitting!). Even though I didn't get to visit the restaurant in person since it was delivered, the food alone makes me want to stop by next time I'm in Charlotte. I'm quite frustrated with their delivery app set up. One of the items that I frequently order and get all the time as this is my favorite place is the fiesta burrito but I always get shredded chicken in it. Previously when I've ordered it on an app like DoorDash I've been allowed to pick chicken or beef which is part of the menu item description. I'm guessing that they updated their DoorDash menu or something because that is no longer the case and when I received my order, not really thinking anything of it I received a beef burrito and when I went back and looked, I was unable to specify if it was chicken or not, and they made an assumption. Also, the sides for the burrito are listed in Spanish so I have a hard time figuring out which one is the refried beans or not and this time instead of receiving what I thought was refried beans I was just given some plain pinto beans. I really wish that their delivery menu set up was easier for a customer to order and modify, especially if they have options of meat with no clear button to click on and they're just making assumptions in the kitchen. read more

Still hands down the best Mexican restaurant in Charlotte. I have not been here in years and brought my suburban friends. They have been plagued with bad Mexican in Indian Land, SC so I treated them to a road trip and some of the biggest and best plates. #33 is my go to, enchilada with beef and a tostada with chicken. Azteca may be my go-to for sit-down Mexican for a while. From the moment I walked in on this my first visit, I was treated with exceeding politeness, as if I were a regular. Mauricio, my waiter, kept it going. He was invested in making sure I was taken care of and gave me good recommendations from the menu. As he said I would, I really enjoyed the Deluxe Burrito. There's just enough food that I was able to finish without feeling like I'd need to be rolled out, and the flavors all complement each other nicely. My only complaint on the food, and the reason Azteca gets four and not five stars, is the chicken in the burrito was chewy instead of tender. Possibly it was a bit overcooked. The dining room itself is crowded though not terribly loud, and there isn't an inch without a pattern or color. You can always find another detail you hadn't noticed. read more

I've been going to Azteca since the 90s and while the menu has changed a bit, the attention and quality of food never does. Tucked away as it is off of Woodlawn near 77, Azteca is easy to miss and isn't as easy to get into as once it was because of all the construction. It's attached to a down-at-heel Days Inn, which doesn't help it look like a place to try on a whim. However... Inside the restaurant is clean and festive, with renditions of "Feliz Cumpleaños" frequently heard. I speak some Spanish but English-only speakers won't have any issue. Although the place can get crowded on weekends, the service has never suffered, drinks are always topped off, and the food is always done right and well. Chips and salsa are of course a staple; I love their regular salsa while the pico - you get both - is popular with a whole lot of people. (My husband used to go there just for the pico and slaw.) My go-to is and ever will be the enchiladas Popeye, and while I have tried repeatedly making spinach enchiladas at home, they never live up to what Azteca serves. Their table-side guacamole is suuuuper good too, as is their queso. If you go fajitas, try the shrimp or skirt steak. Nothing like that smell! So why four stars instead of five? The interior could use a refresh (it and the menu haven't changed much in three decades) and when the place is hopping, the tables are very close to each other so both privacy and conversation can be a bit challenging. Otherwise? This place is gold. So if you're craving decent, no-frills and authentic Mexican food (with some Americanized dishes added in), try Azteca. Oh, and don't forget the margaritas! read more

I usually love this place but I had ordered the arroz con pollo over the phone and explained in detail this specific one I wanted and when I got to the restaurant, thank God, I checked my order bc the manager, had put the wrong one in my bag and when I told him instead of just agreeing to switch it out, he was extremely rude and disrespectful and was mad because " I was wasting food" however his tone and demeanor was completely unacceptable. I couldn't eat the one he had originally put in my bag based on an allergy and it was just extremely disappointing the way I was treated picking up a take out order. Excellent experience. My son and I wanted authentic Mexican food for dinner and this place did not disappoint. I ordered the queso, which was a large portion and delicious. I wanted fish tacos and the server suggested the breaded option. They were amazing. My son enjoyed his food as well! The rice and refried beans were flavorful and hearty. The servings were huge and we had plenty of leftovers. Everything warmed up perfectly for a great lunch for the next day. We topped it off with the Churros for dessert; I am not a fan of the chocolate ice cream with the churros; I will request vanilla next time. They also have a large dessert menu. Finally we had the margarita flight; which came out with a lot of excitement. Order them for a nice surprise. We are looking forward to returning. The restaurant is huge with plenty of seating. My spouse and I were in town for an overnight and looking for a place for dinner near our hotel. The Yelp reviews sounded pretty good for Azteca so we decided to try it. Well, we shared the most incredible overly stuffed steak fajita quesadilla. The steak was tender and so flavorful, almost a teriyaki taste. It's also filled with grilled onions and red and green peppers. It was beyond delicious! Like none I've ever had anywhere else. We also got some queso dip and it came in a soup bowl. So much we couldn't finish it. Along with the complimentary salsa and chips is a dish of Mexican cole slaw that was lovely. The staff is so friendly and welcoming. They kept great tabs on us to make sure everything was going well. The next time we're town we're definitely coming back and having the very same thing. The food was rung up incorrectly & at the end we were charged for guacamole that we never ordered. Not to mention she spoke ill about her previous table & stated she was having a bad day. First time at this Azteca location, although I've been to the Northlake location several times and always enjoy it. My first impression is that parking can be a problem. Fortunately someone was leaving when I arrived, otherwise I would have had to go around back. The layout of this store is also very different than the University location. It feels bigger. They have a patio for outside dining, and I was pleasantly surprised to see a bar that you can sit at too. I ordered ahead and my order was ready when I arrived. But I had also requested a bottle of water since I was going to be eating at a repair shop, and that request seemed to throw them off, even though they confirmed that they sold bottled water over the phone. Five minutes and $2.50 later, I left with a warm bottle of Members Mark purified water. That was an overcharge. As for my meal, I ordered a taco salad. I used to order these from Azteca all the time but it's been years since I've had one because lately I prefer the Burrito Azteca. Today I was in the mood for something light so I got the salad with shredded chicken. When I got to my destination I was underwhelmed by my meal. Something was missing.. didn't take me long to realize the difference between this taco salad and another I enjoy from a place near my home is that there were no beans. So I simply had chicken, lettuce, tomato (+ guacamole and sour cream since I got the deluxe) in a taco shell. And the chicken was bland. It was reasonably priced but not well put together.
