It has taken me slightly over a year to write this review. I moved to Mesa 3 years ago with my husband and two dogs. Last year on 4/1 my senior dog was extremely ill and we were able to get in last minute with Dr. Heffelman. I believe we were the last appointment of the day and I had my husband take Bert to them to see what was going on. They ran some tests and Dr. Heffelman in the most caring way possible told my husband that Bert was in complete organ failure and he recommended to put Bert to sleep. I was at home getting ready for bed and my husband called me and given that it was 4/1 I thought it was a cruel april fools joke. Dr. Heffelman and his staff stayed with Bert while my husband came back to our apartment to pick me up and stayed open late to ensure that we were there and had all the time we needed to say goodbye to our dog Bert. They ensured he felt no pain and stayed with us to tell us when he was finally gone and then allowed us to remain in the room with Bert until we were okay. They were so caring and spent so much time with Bert in the 3 years with Dr. Heffelman whether it be for routine visits, checking his blood pressure weekly, coaching me on how to get Bert's weight down and even helped refer us to a doggie eye doctor when Bert suddenly went blind. They were also helpful in reminding and checking in on us with our other dog Zagreus after Bert's passing to ensure Zagreus was doing okay. When we first got Zagreus he was in and out of vets in the tempe region until we moved and saw Dr. Heffelman who thought he might have valleyfever and luckily he was right and although it has been a long road in trying to cure Zag from valleyfever Dr. Heffelman and his team never get tired of all of our questions and are so gentle with Zag for his 3 month bloodwork and Dr. Heffelman always is so quick in calling us with the results of the blookwork and the next game plan in dealing with his valleyfever. I am beyond glad that we found Superstition Animal Hospital and Dr. Heffelman and his team of dedicated techs and staff. We have never had a bad experience going to them and even their floater vet who sometimes makes appearances is so calming and friendly and puts zagreus (a nervous and anxious dog) at ease. Thank you Dr. Heffelman for all the care and grace you have given us especially on one of our worst days. read more

We have taken our reactive dog to 2 other clinics and the smaller environment here was perfect for him! Dr Heffelman was understanding and helpful, the technician Ashley was amazing with him, and our dog had the best visit he's ever had! read more

I have been taking my dog here for nine years. The original vet, Dr. Dickens was a wonderful vet with a great staff that always made me feel like they cared about my dog and myself. Since Dr. Heffelman took over the practice it has not been the same. Every time I bring my dog in, it is always something dire. Four years ago he said something was wrong with my dogs eyes and he was probably going to go blind and I needed to see a specialist (he isn't blind). Next visit there was a comment about hips and how his gait was off so I needed to see a specialist (I didn't and his gait is the same). Then he says my dog is getting diabetes and it's going to be expensive (his glucose levels are great). Last visit he was even more arrogant then any other visit and again suggested that I urgently needed to do something expensive or else my dog would suffer. Once he left the office a member of his staff came in and said labs needed to be done. I asked why and she said because they need to be drawn every year after he turned six to see how they are progressing. Of course the vet didn't explain any of this and at ten years of age this is the first time it was ever suggested. After $80 for the labs, he called to let me know one of my dogs enzyme level was elevated. When I asked for a copy, he said "do you even know what you're looking at?" Like I am a complete idiot. There is a reason his staffs turnover rate is high and has lost some very loyal clients as of late. Don't take your dogs here. There is no need to deal with a vet who makes you feel like the worst pet parent ever. read more

Small bit a full service vet minus specialties (cardiology, oncology, dermatology etc.) Overall a decent place to come to, not very flexible on same day appointments all the time but still worth it's weight in gold for care. read more

Is doing a great job of treating my puppy's pneumonia. Some vets talk to you like you are stupid, but he showed me everything and talked to me like we were a team making the decision together. I really appreciate that. Will be switching over all of our dogs here. read more

We love Dr. Heffelman! He is a very knowledgeable and friendly veterinarian. Everyone is super helpful and really care about your pets. We were frequent flyers for a while for our 13 year dog as she had her eye removed and ear hematomas fixed by Dr. Heffelman. I felt the prices were very reasonable and that my dog was well taken care of. This is a great place to get care for your pets! read more

This animal hospital is excellent. The staff and Dr Heffelman are so kind and caring. My fur baby trinity loved the doctor and the assistant. The prescribed medication for her ear infection and her itchiness. We will be back in two weeks for her follow up. I recommend Superstition Animal Hospital you won't be disappointed. read more

Won't go back here again. Our puppy has a urination problem.... Probably a UTI. First $50 for the office visit for the vet and nurse to take a temperature and pet the dog. It's nice that they can spend 2 min discussing how they need to get a urin sample to do labs before diagnosing the problem. The nurse came back with a charge sheet for $50 for the labs and $30 to board the animal until they can get one...... keep in mind that doesn't cover the cost of medication. We have 3 dogs, 1 lab which is a service dog (not an emotional support animal) and 2 bloodhounds. There are plenty of offices you can go to that are cheaper and with better care. I just need to share with EVERYONE how much I love this hospital. I am blown away with how much Dr. Heffleman loves his fur babies. He walks into your room and immediately reaches for his patient. We really love the staff at Superstition Animal Hospital. My Gigi was recently there with a bump on her head. Doctor Heffelman is kind and caring. Gigi loves him. The technicians were always happy to accommodate our visits and thousands of questions and love visiting with my baby. Dr. Heffelman handled Gigi's case, and was very up front with charges and expected outcomes of the treatments. Gigi is a happy girl when she is at the doctors office. Do not go here. Have seen 2/2 doctors and Ruiz is very nice, but beats around the bush and it's hard to understand what he's getting at. The other doctor... Huffleman? Or something ( he is the main vet there) is just a complete jerk. He talked to me in a demeaning manner and acted like I was a fool for questioning his surgical solutions. He also treated his assistants like they were lesser than him. I do not want to go to a vet who acts like I am an idiot for questioning him. (Also is confusing because the two doctors had completely different diagnosis than each other) read more

This place was horrible. Unfortunately my regular vet was on vacation and I was had to take my dog here. I talked to the receptionist when I scheduled the appt and she ok'd me using my upc discount. After my dog was seen I overheard the vet complaining about me using the discount. She was very unfriendly and spent maybe two minutes with my dog. She did not say much about the deep wound on his neck except to buy a collar so he does not scratch it... please do not take your pets here. Go somewhere else. read more

I have been taking my pets to Dr. Dickens for over 10 years and she is the most down to earth person you will ever meet. The animals well being comes first and in emergency situations her knowledge and command presence keeps the owner and animal calm. On top off all that her prices are very, very reasonable. read more

Dr. Heffelman is great just the best he has been taking care of my 4 dogs and 4 cats for a while now and the MANY strays I help most recent a cat with a super bad eye that had to come out and a claw that rapped around into her paw A miracle she could walk he said I should give my girlfriend five stars too for taking the eight months to catch this cat The whole staff at the animal hospital is great and we found somebody to adopt her so it all worked out well read more

I just recently started going to Dr. Dickens and I have to say I really love her and her office staff. I had my little Pomeranian's teeth cleaned there and they did a really good job. Recently I had to take another one of my dogs there for a dog bite and they were so good with her - she's very timid - and she's being fixed right up. Everyone in the office has always been very friendly and the wait time is not long. Prices are very reasonable, and like someone else said, Dr. Dickens does not suggest things that aren't necessary. I had to switch vets because my old vet had increased the prices to the point that I just couldn't afford it any more. I have 4 dogs and 2 cats and all will be going to see Dr. Dickens. She is very down to earth and knows her stuff. read more

Dr. H is great and his staff are fantastic, I wouldn't take my animals anywhere else. They are so compassionate and always keep me in the loop. I have multiple animals that see them and we will continue. Not sure where the couple negative reviews are from. Anytime I am there everyone seems happy with their service. He gets on the floor with the pets without question - which shows he cares. He is also straight-forward, which I really like. My old vet was always so dramatic with everything - he's black and white. Dr. Dickens and her staff are the best! Wonderful care for pets at reasonable rates. I have taken my 10 year old dog there for two surgeries to remove masses from her hind leg. They took wonderful care of her both times and sent us home with clear instructions. I'm so happy to have found such a great place to care for my dog. read more

I have concerns...Marilyn Dickens is no longer the vet here...I have a taken a cat in for various problems, but do believe there is a bias -- and I don't like vets that push the negative when I've seen evidence of the contrary....Even when you walk in the place, there seems to be a bias. Our Corgi had been seen at this vet hospital for almost 15 years... from his first puppy shots to today when Dr. Heffelman helped us say goodbye. We have been so blessed to have had 3 great doctors and caring and friendly staff for all those years. Dr. H helped us manage our pets pain until it was time to let him go. I can't say enough good things about the staff, especially Peggy, Stephanie and Rhonda who loved him almost as much as we did. When we get another dog, we will continue driving from Gold Canyon to Mesa for the competent and compassionate care we get there. read more

Dr. Dickens and Staff are wonderful and caring. I had been bring my toy poodle since moving here from lllinois in 2009. My little girl got professional care at reasonable rates. She had multiple eye growth removal surgeries. I finally got it biopsied and it was cancerous. She was 14 years old and I had to put her to sleep in December 2014 due to other failing health issues associated with old age. He gives us all the time we need to answer any and all questions and provides additional written information to take home if needed. The entire staff in the office is exceptional. I have been to Dr. Dickens for many many years (since 2004). I have always been VERY happy with the service I've received here. They are friendly, they care about the animals and are compassionate. They've always honored my UPC discount and have been generous in doing so. Their prices ARE very reasonable- believe me, I've called and compared prices with other vets, and have always come here. I have 4 dogs (an eskie poo and yorkies) and 2 cats. They remind you via mail when it's time for shots and check ups. They are thorough and professional! read more

Very frustrated with this place. Money is their motivation and not the well being of the pet, your family member , your best friend. The staff is rude and non caring do not return your phone call because they feel someone else returned your call. They have policies in force that no other animal hospital has heard of in order to charge you additional fees knowing all along their taking advantage of your wallet.
