Located in a mall, there is limited parking in the front of the store, but around back is a separate lot that gives you plenty of options regardless of the time of day. This location is like the others that I have been to. Clean, airy, bright (plenty of windows letting sunlight in). I have shopped at this location several times, staff is friendly, nice selection of cookware, dishes, glasses, silverware, cooking utensils, mixes, spices, etc. I have taken 2 cooking classes there. Including a class for Steak, Salad, Mousse. It was fun, and informative. Class was a little over 2 hours. We were taught by a renowned chef who walked us through every step in the process. See attached pictures, but in the end, we had a delicious meal prepared by all 4 of us at our station. We also got a discount to use that day on any items we purchased. In addition we were emailed the recipe and ingredient list, and a coupon on a future class. I recommend a class if you have time. read more

I've had a wonderful experience with Sur La Table's Cooking Classes and wanted to write this positive review. I'm glad I found out about the cooking classes when I just happened to be in the store. There was a schedule for that month posted on the back wall near the restrooms. I immediately wanted to take a baking class then ended up taking several classes like Knife Skills, Intro to Sushi, Delicious Dim Sum, Tamale Making just to name a few. When I was inside the store, the staff were always very friendly and helpful. The chefs were consistently amazing to learn from. They were great with walking the class through the steps and answering our questions at the same time. I loved their team approach...having us work in a group or in a pair depending on the capacity in the kitchen. An added bonus was taking the recipes home. I remember a few years back it was nice to sit down as a class, eat together and socialize; but nowadays, I noticed we've been taking our dishes home. I wonder if it recently went back to how it was originally. Anyway, I always had a fun time cooking, learning something new and meeting people. I surprised my husband with a cooking class at Sur La Table in Carlsbad and we had the BEST time! It was fun doing something different from our typical dinner/drinks date night. Chef Gaetano was our teacher and he was wonderful! He kept the experience light, silly and fun, while also teaching us A TON of tips and tricks. My dad was a chef so I feel pretty good around the kitchen, but even so Chef Tano taught me new techniques. His assistants, Jaden and Natasha were fabulous, too. 3 friends and I took a Dumpling class yesterday, with Chef T. It was just great. He started on time, explained what the class would be making (3 different types), a quick demonstration of knife safety, and then we got to work. Loved that "they" did most of the prep work, but we chopped and assembled. And then we got to eat them!! Chef and cleanup staff were just great. Definitely looking at another class! Part of the dinner was we each made our own dessert, but after dessert was cooked and came time to eat we didn't necessarily eat the ones that we made. We took the French Winter feast class and it was really fun. It was three generations and we each enjoyed the experience. I did one with my granddaughter a year or so ago and that was fun too. Whenever I walk in here, I wish I could buy everything. Their spatulas are so fun, and feel way less flimsy than ones on Amazon or similar. I've gotten my knives sharpened here for like $7 a knife which was a steal because I don't trust myself to sharpen them. I've been wanting to take a cooking class with them and will soon, I like that the classes are varied and split up into groups. I tried to purchase a $150 gift card online and was charged $11.63 in sales tax. When I called the La Costa/Encinitas store, the young woman who answered said that, indeed, they were charging sales tax for gift cards. This means I would be paying sales tax for the gift card, and when the recipient used the card, they would be charged again. She said she could not help and told me I needed to call the online sales and work it out with them. Why would it be my responsibility to contact their company to ask them to stop illegally double-charging customers? This is poor customer service. I shall take my business elsewhere. read more

I had high hopes for this cooking class, but unfortunately, it fell short of my expectations, leaving me disappointed. One of the main issues was the difficulty in hearing and understanding our chef. She spoke quite quickly and softly, which, combined with her accent and the background noise from the dishes being washed which echoed in the room, made it challenging to follow her instructions. This led to a sense of confusion among most of the groups, resulting in a somewhat chaotic atmosphere throughout the class. I had anticipated more teaching from the chef, but the level of instruction was not as extensive as I had hoped. However, I must commend the friendly assistant helpers, particularly one who took the time to demonstrate the proper knife-holding technique for dicing. The overall experience could have been more enjoyable with some wine and some chairs. After cooking we ate while standing, although we did manage to find two stools in the corner, which we offered to the older couples in our group. As for the dishes we prepared, the gnocchi turned out really well, but the steak and dessert were just average to slightly below average. Considering the cost of $400 for four people, I feel that we might have had a better experience dining out or engaging in a different activity. It sounds like others may have had more positive experiences with different chefs at this establishment, but I would not be inclined to take another class here. read more

What a disappointing experience. I had been looking forward to this class for a month. It was my first cooking class. We were making petit choux, sweet and savory. There were 4 students, all working with one pot, bowl, burner etc. The instructor was very nice. She kept telling us it was easy and hard to mess up. She had measured everything before class so all we had to do was dump the ingredients into a bowl. When she said to add 8 eggs to the choux batter, I knew that sounded excessive so I asked how much flour was going into it. Her reply was not to worry about it, I want you to focus on technique. I do know a little, so when she said to add eggs to batter, I asked don't you want us to break eggs into a smaller bowl before adding so there's no chance of egg shells? She said no. Next she was ok with the batter being way too runny which resulted in flat pastry. She used freeze dried strawberry with granulated sugar for cream puff filling. Knowing you're supposed to use confectioners sugar, because she had said so, she did it anyway. Why not do it right when teaching a class? Then she baked all of our piped choux. It wasn't baked long enough and the dough was almost raw and flat. Why would and instructor under bake it and act as if they were good? After that, she set us up with piping bags with a large tip. She had us make small eclairs and cream puffs so we had to destroy what we made to fill them. Also because they were flat it was impossible not to make a a huge mess. I finally asked for small tips which she obliged. She should have given us the proper equipment to begin with. We couldn't get the chocolate to set on the eclairs because it wasn't heated enough so at the end of the class when someone said something, she heated it correctly. It was one disaster after another. This is a very prestigious part of town in a lovely city. I expected a professional chef and all the professionalism that goes with that price and location. Had I not watched a few YouTube tutorials in the morning, I would have been totally lost and not known any better. She used a special pan made for making choux and suggested we purchase it with a 10% discount for taking the class. When I went to buy it, they were out and couldn't apply the discount. I ordered it anyway. All in all, it was very disappointing. I may take more classes but never at that location ever again. read more

It seemed that there were too many things going on & difficult to focus, she was kind of unpleasant & short with her responses & input. For amateur and other wannabe cooks, this place has a lot of fun but expensive kitchen tools (and a lot of kitchen toys--stuff you really don't need but are dying to buy). But the real reason to come here is for the cooking classes held in a separate room at the back of the store. Fair warning--the classes are not cheap. They generally run $70 or $80 per person and everyone seems to come with their spouse or date, so it can be a pretty "big" night out. Then again, the classes are an absolute blast. Trust me on this--once you take one class, as soon as it is over, you will be scanning the upcoming calendar for the next class which interests you. Here is how it works: You, and everyone else in attendance, do the actual cooking of that night's meal. So, the main cook leading the show (who usually has credentials like you would not believe) explains the recipes and the top-notch knives, bowls, and kitchen appliances are all at your disposal as you work on some aspect of the meal everyone will eventually consume for dinner. I'm talking appetizers, salads, steaks, fish, veggies, fries, desserts, you name it. Believe it or not, the combined efforts of the attendees make for some damn great food. And it doesn't hurt that the assistants who help run the class keep everyone's wine glass filled pretty much from start to finish (and the classes run about 3 hours). I've taken two classes and can't wait to attend more. It's a great chance to learn some new recipes, work on your cooking skills, and meet a lot of very friendly people. We did a class that is to learn how to cook. It was super fun and exciting! We learned the proper way to cut vegetables, fruit, and herbs. The chef was a great teacher. Taught us about different knifes, sizes, blades and more. We had so much fun we signed up for another class. I'm 29 and my mom is 65 so it doesn't matter how old we are. We hosted a private cooking class here in honor of a friend's bachelorette party and had a fantastic experience. Both Chef Liz and Chef Matt were extremely helpful and very responsive. From the beginning planning stages, both Chefs worked with us to design a custom menu for our private event. We had many special requests and dietary restrictions, and both of them were able to provide great recommendations. Also, Chef Liz specifically added some helpful tips based on her experience hosting a large group of rowdy ladies. Prior to the event starting, they let us BYO alcoholic drinks (with no corkage fees) and decorations for set up. They even let us swap out the usual last course of dessert for another entree, and bring in our own special dessert. On the day of, everyone felt extremely pampered. It was like cooking with a personal assistant at your side. The staff took drink orders, served us with new dishes, linens, and silverware after each meal, cleared plates, cleaned dishes, and even had mini-appetizers for us to munch on. Plus, the food was delicious. Everyone felt satisfied and full. Our menu was: - Arugula, Roasted Beet, Goat Cheese, and Pine Nut Salad Perfect starter, light and whets your appetite - Butternut Squash Ravioli with Brown Butter & Sage Sauce The sauce was amazing, and learning this was so easy and interactive. I will definitely be making this one again. - Sherry-Marinated Grilled Shrimp with Pimenton Aioli Perfectly grilled shrimp - Lemon-Buerre Blanc Sea Bass with Roasted Green Beans My personal favorite. Chef Liz made cooking sea bass look so easy, and it came out fork-tender. I love Sur La Table and LOVE LOVE LOVE the cooking classes from Pam Schwartz. I have taken numerous cooking classes in the past and she is as good as it gets. Not only will her recipes make you say "WOW" as you eat and leave you eager to try them yourself. At the class I took all of the recipes were simple enough to cook for a weekday meal, but would also have been wonderful for company. They would have been good for a casual backyard bbq or for a holiday meal. I was able to execute every single recipe from the last class and they turned out beautifully. Each of her recipes packs a ton of flavor without needing a ton of wacky ingredients or bizarre kitchen tools that you would only use for that recipe. They were simple ingredients, simple techniques and AMAZINGLY flavorful. I have taken a lot of cooking classes and none of them have been the quality and fun of the ones at Sur La Table. I surprised my fiance with a cooking class here for his bday/xmas. We took a class with Chef Wood, and our menu included soufflé, salmon, and pear tart. Everything was delicious, and easy and fun to make. Chef Wood was super nice and helpful, even when some people in the class weren't listening. We got all the recipes to take home as well, which is awesome. The techniques we got were easy to follow with our own food, and we've already made a similar seared salmon at home. We got a 10% off coupon good for a week, and we bought a cook microwave popcorn popper, and kernels, which were affordable and useful. I can't wait to try it. Overall I recommend Sur La Table's cooking classes even though they're somewhat expensive (80ish$ per person). Its worth it because you get a meal, plus techniques for the future, and a cute date night idea :) read more

Visiting fam in Carlsbad we were treated to a cooking class at the store. The store in Seattle is so cramped with the latest gadgetry, we had no idea they hosted classes. The whole fam was able to come in and learn to cook such deliciousness as succotash, mashed potatoes, grilled chicken, beet gnocchi, and a butterscotch dessert. The recipes were apparently from famous LA chefs, but taught by another accomplished chef. This seems a bit clunky as she wasn't a big fan of some of the techniques & recipe. We learned some great new stuff and had a fun time with family we don't get to spend a lot of time with. But there was def some intermittent awkwardness with dumb questions from the group, instructor hustlin to make a meal/answer said dumb q's/ and trying to offer advice on tools needed, and superfluous junk sold at the store. Taking the class did offer a discount at the store. So much beautiful, funny, and useful kitchen tools. Everything you could need & tons of stuff you would never use. Lovely displays & helpful (if a little too attentive) staff. Maybe because there is simply SO MUCH stuff, it was difficult to find things without a staffers help. At the end of the 2 hour cook sess', we ate. And oh my! How lovely. It was an excellent way to spend quality time with fam you don't know well & pick up some skills. read more

Finally made it to a Sur la Table cooking class! Since my friend's beau lives in Del Mar, we decided to make an excursion out of this.. what a perfect reason to escape to San Diego. On this occassion, we took the 'Summer Al Fresco Dinner' menu since we adore dining outside on warm summer nights. The Chef, Pam (who was the ex-chef over at Nobu in Vegas and Pamplemousse in SD) was awesome. She really emphasied on 'room temperature' served food since it was summertime. We cooked up some fun and easy things. Now the style of this class is different from HipCooks... with it being a part of Sur La Table, we got to work with the BEST equipment and I'm fully convinced that my next big purchase will be a Global kitchen knife. (Although my mom's supposed to bring me back a cool knife from Tokyo... the Global knife was seriously so ridiculously perfect, it made you cut everything, real effortlessly and precisely like an expert) Also, the class was so tiny, (my friend, another lady and myself) that it really enabled us to get to know the Chef and her assistant... I really had a great time and got to ask any question I had in my small bag of culinary neuroses. Menu: We were all pretty much in charge of selecting one item to "own" since it was such a small class... we took turns in executing the items. I was responsible for the Panzanella which is a Bread and Tomato Salad and Beef Tagliata, which is a Beef Tenderloin Salad. The Panzanella Salad required a lot of prep work, which I really didn't mind, thanks to the phat Global knife. I basically cubed some ciabatta bread, sliced up some tomatoes, cucumber and red onions and tossed in some chiffonaded basil, olive oil, red wine vinegar and salt & pepper. SO GOOD. After I was through, I made the Beef Tenderloin salad where I marinated this hunka burnin' beef tenderloin which typically intimidates the crap out of me with olive oil, thyme and balsamic then pan seared it and threw it into the oven. The Chef taught us how to assess rare, medium rare, medium, etc by a 'touch technique', by poking your fist to compare its readiness by mere touch. My friend made the Pannacotta which turned out to be absolutely wicked. We even made a sorbet made out of Oranges and Campari to lace this above Pannacotta as a sauce. I've had something similar to this at Craft for desert and now, this will give me an excuse to get some small ramekins. I really loved this simple dessert. Onto other items... we actually made homemade pasta tossed into a crab vinaigrette. I was at Linens & Things' liquidation the other day with the same friend and she scored a pasta maker for $14.99. So jealous! But seriously, JT doesn't need to be eating more pasta. I think the next class I'd like to take over here or at Farmers Market (Grove) would be the Essential Knife Skills class! I've never cut myself, but would like to see myself go faster. PS - they give you a 15% off coupon to shop with for the remainder of the day if you take this class. So I purchased a Peugot Peppermill I've had on the back of my mind, as well as a cool Salt Pig, very cool vegetable peeler that could also be used as a cheese slicer and real funky modern wipable place mats I actually saw at MOMA in NY. read more

Chef Annie is the best! I've done two cooking classes with her (Cooking without Recipes and Jacques Pepin), and one Thanksgiving class in Los Angeles - I've enjoyed every minute. If work groups were in pairs instead of groups of four, I would give this five stars. However, with limited hands-on opportunities, spreading the duties and learning between four people is stretched a bit thin in my opinion. I thought they were joking until it came time to eat the food we'd created and again no wine. They claimed they couldn't serve it in a public venue. I've taken many cooking classes in many different stores or places of business and we've always been served wine. The chef and the helpers were all very friendly and knowledgeable and I learned a few things. The set-up was a little disjointed. It's touted as being a hands-on course and some of the assembly is done by members of the teams, while some is done by the chef. It was often confusing as to which tray of ingredients we should be working with. It was just an OK experience and at their prices I'll not be going back. read more

I had the best time at The Tour of Italy cooking class. This is a hands on experience. Making pasta was a little more challenging then I expected. The classroom enviroment was great and to talk with others while you preparing the pasta and sauces. Our group at the table spoke of making pasta, pesto, and Europe. Besides the chef, there were approximately 5-6 assistants to help us and best of all do all the clean up. The class was a mixed enviroment of ages and genders. What a wonderful experience. This store is AH-MAZ-ING. Seriously. If you are a foodie....you need to go. They have very useful and hard to find gear along with gorgeous dishes, gifts, books, etc, It is useful and pretty all at the same time! The staff is very helpful and knowledgeable and I love the many purchases I have made there. I am not giving 5 stars because of a cooking class I took. I really wanted to LEARN something.....but unfortunately did not. My class was interactive so each table of 5-6 people were assigned a dish to make. I was flying solo and everyone was 20-30 years older than me. Everyone was being very bossy, telling me what to do and really didn't let me get involved. I could have been more assertive but wasn't feeling it. The class also did not include wine and for $80 or whatever it was, I didn't think having food cooked by rookies without wine was worth it. I will not attend another class here, which is sad. In fact, the whole experience turned me off cooking classes all together. But other than that, if you need high quality cooking ware, go to Sur La Table. read more

Ok, this was my first cooking class w/my GF and was very disspointed. The atmosphere and cook/help were great but then it all kinda fell apart. 1st of all, they advertised dinner and wine but...no wine/drinks allowed. 2nd, they do so much prep work ahead of time and you are paired with other couples which although makes it social, takes away from learning the entire process. 3rd, and this was kinda funny, kinda not, they were short two duck breast (1per couple) and just played it off...until it came time to serve....$85 per person for 3 small slices of duck, a plate of salad, pastry slice and a cup of water........ Don't see coming back unless the prices drop or we get a GROUPON and the experience is a bit more thorough. read more
