I rushed Mele in today after seeing her struggle to breathe. The front desk rushed to the back where the doctor was, and he left his appointment temporarily, politely pardoning himself for an emergency and tended to Mele immediately. Unfortunately they discovered she had a fatal cancerous tumor that was far too advanced to do anything about. Despite having her since 2017, we lost her. I love that he didn't minimize my loss because it wasn't a big dog or some traditional animal, this was our family Mynah Bird. She was the very first bird I ever rehabbed when I started volunteering for the Wild Bird Rehab Haven, which she became our pet after being unreleasable. She sang Harry Potter, jingle bells, twinkle twinkle little star, and even talked a little. She'd say her name, hello, good night, a few other phrases/words, and even copied things in our house such as the espresso machine. Should loved shredded cheese and papaya, but only if she was hand fed. I love that they didn't minimize my hurt and loss and understood that she was just as important as a golden retriever is to someone else's family. Thank you for doing everything you could to save her considering I just walked in on emergency basis. I know there's nothing more that could be done and I don't question any possibilities. Our dogs love Hawaii Kai Vet Clinic. We started coming here for our first dog Zero. We just adopted him within the last year and he started to have complications so we brought him in as an emergency visit. We met Dr. Sakamoto for the very first time. As I started to cry thinking this was it for Zero; she had a plan to help him. She was super professional and supportive; she made me feel safe for him. We scheduled his extensive surgery with Dr. Watkins and he did so well!!! We are so grateful that we found such a good vet clinic and vet and surgeon. We can't explain how thankful we are. I was so Happy when Dr Kaya came to Hawaii Kai. We used to go to him when he was in Manoa. He takes the time to spend with your babies no matter what they are. I first went to him for my sick rabbit and after the care he gave my rabbit, I switched my dogs over to him. Now that he's at Hawaii Kai it's convenient to take our three dogs. But Dr Kaya isn't the only great vet there. Dr Kaya only brought over the very best! We've been to Dr Ong, Dr Leeloy, Dr Ako, both Dr Sakamoto and we've always been so pleased. It is very unfortunate that my first visit with this clinic was under grim circumstances. Be that as it may, I cannot thank Dr. Ako and the staff enough for squeezing me in on an emergency for my bunny Blue, and for treating both him and I with so much care and compassion. Unfortunately it was too late for Blue and he passed due to G.I. Stasis while I was there. With that being said, Dr. Ako reassured me that he lived a long life full of love. He was 9yrs old. On a Monday, I had taken him to Feather and Fur b/c they accept walk-ins. After 3hrs, they were unable to diagnose him and wanted to keep him overnight for observation, quoting me nearly $1,000. I decided to take him home and administer his care myself. Throughout the week, he was showing vast signs of improvement. By Friday, I awoke to him laying limp and rushed him to HK Vet Clinic, begging them on the phone to let me bring him in. They were understanding and allowed me to. Dr. Ako was able to diagnose him within the first 5-10 minutes. However, I believe the stress of the examination was too much for him, already being at the end of his rope. He suddenly passed and I immediately became a mess b/c he ripped a piece of my heart and took it with him. Moving forward, I had Feather and Fur send over all the info of my remaining 8 bunnies. Words cannot express how grateful I am to all of them. Thank you for caring for our babies and I wish I had brought him to you guys in the first place, but I will not make that mistake again. P.S. Fair warning when it comes to Dr.Ako, he is not a gentle doctor. He is straight and to the point. He accidentally poked my male grandbun in the eye while doing his exam, which freaked me out, but my bun was fine. If you're looking for a soft doc, Dr.Ako is not it. Lol. FYI: Although you bring your bun in for a health exam, spending over $100...they will still charge extra for nail clipping(it is not included, even though it only took doc like 30 seconds). I highly recommend Dr. Ako if you have chickens!! I know he also sees other types of animals but I know how hard it is to find a good veterinarian for chickens (Avian Vet). I initially brought my rooster (Cotton) here because I noticed a foul fishy smell coming from his beak when he breaths; he was also breathing hard on a daily basis which I found to be odd. I absolutely love my silkie rooster and wanted to make sure nothing was wrong with him so I made an appointment with Dr. Ako for that Saturday. Due to COVID-19, there were strict procedures in place so everyone was safe: 1) After parking your vehicle, you have to send a text or call the staff to let them know you're here; they also ask you for the make/model/color of your vehicle; 2) The doctor or staff will come out to get your pet from you and bring him/her in for the appointment. I was fortunate that Dr. Ako came out personally to introduce himself, go over my concerns, and ask about Cottons living conditions (food, water source, etc.). Dr. Ako also asked me if I had FaceTime so he could talk to me while examining Cotton; I really appreciated this. 3) After the exam, the doctor will tell you the test results (if any) and what they recommend for treatment. After he communicates his recommendations, he or a staff member will bring your pet out to you. In Cotton's situation, the Doctor mentioned that he saw some bacteria on the slide from a culture done on cotton so he wanted to start him on antibiotics to try and get rid of the infection. Also, I told the doctor that cotton did a full checkup at another veterinary office. However, the paperwork that was given to Dr. Ako from the other veterinarian didn't show anything about an exam. I was very upset about this because we paid a lot for that exam. Dr. Ako assured me that Cotton was in good hands and will receive proper care and treatment. read more

I am very disappointed that I have to write this unpleasant review, but I need to let potential and current clients know what we had to deal with. I don't blame anyone for their unprofessional, uncaring and unacceptable behavior. They need to get their acts together. I had to wait 6 days before my vet to returned my call in regards to a follow up on a medication. I was told my message was deleted and that they had to figure out who they needed to return the call to. Unprofessional and unacceptable. I picked up 2 different types of medications for my dog. When it was time to administer the medications, both pill bottles had the same drug name on the 2 bottles. Plus the medication had an expiration date of 09/20/2022! I was concerned and called the office. They treated my concern as its no big deal that the labels are incorrect. Well, its a big deal to me! Told me to go back and they will fix the labels for me. It's not about "fixing" the labels. It's about not making this huge mistake. When I questioned the expired medications. I was told someone forgot to change the date. Not acceptable. Who knows, maybe it is expired medication. At this point, there is no trust in this veterinary clinic. They simply don't care. read more

This review is based on the interaction with Dr. Eric Ako. The front desk staff was pleasant. However, Dr. Ako was rude, egotistical, sarcastic and an absolute jerk. He dismissed what he thought was "stupid" questions and when I asked again said, sounds pretty common sense to me then turned to my husband and said, you know, you're local right! Insulted I said, I'm 100% local, born and raised. He laughed and said, then why do you speak proper English? I couldn't wait to get out of there and take my fur baby else where. Never going back! As far as evaluating my dog (went there because she has several lumps on her tummy and back), he said, well if you want to waste your money, I can put a needle in each one, I'll even cut them out if you want. I asked, is there reason to be concerned? He said, don't think it's cancer but hey, I'll do whatever you want. Please, there are far better vets, don't give Dr. Ako your time or money! read more

The staff is very friendly and welcoming. Clean and well-maintained facility, Prompt service and minimal wait time. When we entered the examination room it was so wonderful to see a "Welcome Maxer" sign on the board. Jackie who was the vet. tech was very friendly, and gentle with Maxer. Dr. Jensen was the Veterinarian and she is very professional, personable, knowledgeable, explained the treatment plan and even when she called me a few days later to give me the lab results, I appreciated the fact that she really took het time in explaining his health profile. This is an update to my 3 year old post. Whoa! How time flies! In dog years my pup is now 20-something.....and he has mellowed out like I couldn't imagine. He eats different food. He behaves. He doesn't chew his leash. He gets tired after a few throws or a short walk. So much has changed. But one thing that hasn't changed one bit is how much he loves coming to he Hawaii Kai Vet clinic. You know how when a doctor that you love retires, nobody can quite fill their shoes. I was worried when Dr. Yoon retired that no one could love my Kosi the same way. And different as it is, the love and care and compassion by the new doctors has been amazing. Perhaps it is because the clinic manager has stayed the same. Or maybe it's just because every veterinarian here is big hearted and animal loving. I'm so grateful for every kindness and caring touch they have given my oldest son. read more

Best vet ever!!! Our Goldendoodle puppy Jack Jack is the newest addition to our family and after scouring Yelp for the right vet, we ended up going with Hawaii Kai Veterinary Clinic. It comes highly recommended by some of my favorite Yelpers who I know would never steer me wrong. From our very first visit with Dr. Sakamoto, I have always been so happy with the quality of service we've experienced. Our puppy can't wait to see her and practically jumps out of the car with joy for his appointments. Dr. Sakamoto helped walk us through all the vaccinations, is always patient in answering any random questions we have and even helped us switch to a healthier pet food for our large breed dog. Other than just vaccinations, I've experienced first hand why it's so important to have a vet you can trust with your fur baby as well as pet insurance! Our puppy hurt his leg one night and the next day we brought him in to see Dr. Sakamoto who gave him an x-ray and let us know he had indeed fractured his tibia. Thankfully Dr. Sakamoto gave him medication for the pain and bandaged his leg, which helped to keep his leg stable until we were able to take him in for surgery. More than just level of care, just four days before his accident Dr. Sakamoto gave me a Trupanion certificate which allowed me to activate our pet insurance without the 30-day waiting period. This literally saved us over $5000 in surgery & vet fees as they covered 90% of the injury related costs. Is that serendipity or what?! Been coming here for years for our baby Belle without any problems. And my baby never harmed anyone. Dr Ong is great and our recent Dr Jensen we have great experience. Very poor experience with Dr Lee she accused my dog of being danger or aggressive that could harm her staff. Maybe because my dog is part Pit? We had previous surgery with Dr Jensen and my baby belle did not hurt anyone . She didn't get to do the procedure we agreed because she couldn't handle or manage her procedure. My mind was zoned out of disappointment and I was doing my best to compose myself. Was not at all absorbing all the overwhelming everything she's saying so I just decided not to proceed and not to trust her confidence in the surgery with all the (red flags) I had to cancel all of my appointments that morning since they ask us to come in early and She just completely wasted my day and payed for it. My Labrador Fiji is a service animal and has gotten excellent care here from Dr. Ann Sakamoto. Since he was 14 weeks old. He is almost 6. We love her, she has always been good to us. And I've spent thousands and thousands of dollars here, because my dog's health is not negotiable. I buy his ridiculously expensive vet-only food here, because his stomach is so sensitive. He has been allergy tested, has had his stomach ultrasound done. But yesterday? Last straw. My dog vomited 5 times in an hour and I called and asked for a refill of a medicine he has been given before .. specifically for the same type of vomiting ... Medicine previously prescribed by his vet the last time he went in as an emergency for this exact reason and had gotten a thorough exam, when she said, "not sure what it is, but give him this". The desk clerk told me he should come in because they have an opening now, but I said no, i knew what meds he takes and need the meds. I want his stomach settled before I take him. I made an appt for Wednesday. I expected no problem going to run over and get the meds. He called me back and said two vets were consulted there and they would not prescribe his medicine without seeing him today. He said the vets said they won't prescribe without checking him for "underlying conditions", which they never were able to diagnose before. Why let him suffer when they have seen him previously for this exact thing and there is a long record of it in his file? Dr. Kaya? Isn't the reason you establish a long term relationship with your vet because you want a complete record and people who know his history? Compassion First? I am so furious and heartbroken these vets wouldn't help. Literally, they held an emergency visit fee of greater value to them than my dogs comfort. Unforgivable. read more

I wanted to update my review. Bruno and I came in to check on his urine. I was afraid that he had another UTI so just to be safe we came in to get it checked out. Dr. Ong and her team are so sweet and patient with my Bruno. He loves all the attention too so it's a win-win :) Dr. Ong talked to me in the waiting room about his urine and did a quick exam on his body. I'm very appreciative that she did that. Dr. Ong mentioned his cracked tooth. You can imagine how surprised I was to hear about this! She showed me the tooth and helped me understand the dangers of having a cracked tooth and what we can do moving forward. I'm not going to lie, it's an expensive procedure, but she provided information about care credit - which will help with finances. I trust Hawaii Kai Veterinary Clinic and I know they have Bruno and my best interest at heart. They always make time to help me take better care of my furry babies. Yesterday, we said goodbye to our beloved Buttons. Dr. Sakamoto and Dr. Ong were very caring and patient with our little Buttons. Buttons was a very special part of our family; so sweet, gentle and loving. Thank you to Hawaii Kai Veterinary Clinic, and especially Dr. Sakamoto for allowing our family to say our goodbyes before our precious pup crossed from this life into the next life where there's no more pain or suffering. We were glad that it was Dr. Sakamoto that was there when Buttons passed. She truly cared for our Buttons all these years and I could tell she hurt inside watching us say our goodbyes and when Buttons breathed her last breath. We were blessed to have Buttons for 13 wonderful years and we were blessed to have the best veterinarian and staff caring for her all those years. However I have been to the emergency pet hospital and I don't feel my dog gets the best care there, since they don't know their history. I took my puppy for his last set of boosters to see Dr. Sakamoto after I had a bad experience at Surf Paws. It was puppies first visit at surf paws and we were in and out within 10 minutes, the vet gave me no info. Or advice AND was going to double vaccinate my dog on our next visit, I would have had no idea. Anyway - after seeing immediately how little she seemed to care I thought I'd go ahead and give dr. Sakamoto, the vet staff gave me a background of each doctor and felt I'd be comfortable with dr. Sakamoto, since she herself has dachshund mixes. The staff is so friendly! I left the vet that day so happy and excited that I found someone that seemed very knowledgeable and genuinely cared about my fur baby. She gave me advice, explained all the necessary vaccinations as well as optional ones - never once made feel pressured to get something he would not need,asked me a ton of questions about him, went over in detail the process of travel with him in/out of Hawaii, and she just made me feel comfortable. 10/10 recommend this clinic and her! read more

HKVC failed in providing the best care for my cat. I WAS a long time customer prior to Dr. Kaya taking over the establishment from Dr. Yoon who provided the best care to my cats. I thought I would give Dr. Kaya's vets at HKVC a chance for the past couple of years. Dr. Gans was my cats vet who was fantastic, caring, professional and compassionate. He left HKVC and this is where is went down hill. I took one of my cats in because he was not feeling well and was assigned to Dr. Sakamoto. At the first visit she definitely did not have the compassion and professionalism. I was advised that my cat would need an expensive blood test to determine the cause, which I agreed to. She seemed in a rush and quicklly blurted out at that visit it may be diabetes but "I don't know much about cats and diabetes". Not sure how a vet gets their professional license if they don't know the most common animals for care. She then went to another appointment and greeted the next appointment of a dog by giving that pet owner and dog a warm greeting. I followed up by calling HKVC Dr. Sakamoto the next couple of days of the visit. She finally returned my call to tell me my cat had diabetes. I had 20 questions but none of them were answered. I was quickly referred to a specialist at VCA in Aiea. After one year of going back and forth to VCA for glucose testing the final straw was last month when they failed to provide the primary care responsibilities. The front desk manager or lead technician at HKVC advised me for me to go back to VCA in Aiea to obtain his prescription for insulin since the pharmacist called for its renewal. I followed her instructions going back to VCA in Aiea after several appointments for costly glucose testing when I was faced with added charges for examination that was supposed to be taken care of by my cats primary care physician at HKVC. It is sad that HKVC lost it credibility and trust to provide the best possible care to my cats failed me and most importantly my cat. To add insult to injury when my cat was diagnosed as diabetic, I called HKVC to speak to Dr. Sakamoto who never returned my phone calls and the questions that emailed that the front desk staff told me to "Google how to give your cat insulin shots". This review is late, as My appointment was back in February 2021. Our beloved cat was very sick and he needed to be humanely euthanized. My 2 daughters and I were emotional wrecks because we didn't want to drop him off to die alone with strangers but we knew we could not allow him to suffer any longer. The COVID rules suck--but we understood the reasons behind it and we weren't angry--the same kind of rules were in place at hospitals. I called ahead to arrange this and I explained, if there was any way for one of us to be there with him, so he wouldn't be scared, and could pass in our arms being loved, we would be forever grateful. We got there not expecting anything when we were greeted out front. But, my eldest daughter was allowed to be with him, and he passed peacefully in her arms. We are forever grateful! The staff was so gentle and empathetic and my daughter felt very supported and was not afraid. They explained everything they were going to do and our furbaby passed receiving the best care possible! Vets were really nice to our big Max (20 lb big boy) as he was limping and unhappy. Since not big issue we tried pain meds for nearly a week and Mr Max got better. Will keep going. Mr Max now on a diet to loose 5 lb over a couple months. Due to COVID they come to get your cat and you wait in car. Mr Max doesn't seem to mind going and has taken to sleeping in his carrier. This Veterinary clinic is excellent. There is no funky animal smell and all the vet techs are friendly and gentle, which really puts this fur mom at ease. Dr. Ong is so compassionate and very thorough. My dog was having some breathing issues, and barely eating so I called for an appointment. This was the first time visiting this clinic with this senior pooch, they took his picture, weighed him, and put us in the exam room. Dr. Ong did her exam with my guy and gave me the bad news; he was suffering from heart failure. The reason for the labored breathing is that there was fluid filling up his chest cavity making the heart have to work even harder. She gave me some difficult news, but was so kind and compassionate. We decided to try a "hail-Mary" and took my boy home with some meds an appointment for the next day. He responded well to the treatment and medications, and the next day he walked in that office like a champ! He didn't hide and he wagged his tail when he saw Dr. Ong. She was also impressed with his transformation, and we were blessed to have him for 8 more months. Dr. Ong really helped us navigate his last day, with straightforward information, delivered with such compassion and kindness. It's the hardest thing to walk into a vet office with your pet, and walk out with just a collar. The office arranged his cremation and when he was ready to be brought home, the message left by the vet tech was, "We have Odie's remains, but you take your time and come when you are ready. We'll keep him safe until then." We got a card in the mail, that informed us of a donation made in our boy's name for a foundation that works with animals. Then we got a handwritten card signed by all the techs and Dr. Ong. I was just totally blown away at how caring and respectful this clinic is. read more

Dr. Ako was filling in for Dr. Gans one day and he called me to update me on my dogs health, in doing so he literally was berating and asked me why my dog was on so many medications. I had just spent over $15,000.00 on my dog at VERC and I was following their directions. Dr. Ako let me know he was doing me a favor, his exact words.... I am pretty sure as a customer I am doing you a favor by patronizing your business and paying you money. I am not one of those that believes the customers is always right but this took that to a whole next level. Dr. Gans, the office manager, all followed up with me but each stated they felt that this would not change, it has happened before and they stated they knew this was his behavior. I let the office know that day that I would do them a favor and find another vet, that way Dr. Ako did't have to go out of his way to "help me and do me any favors". The staff seemed to really care, especially Dr. Gans and Tina however I never heard back from Dr. Ako, sadly. When I was out of the meds the next few days I called the office to just get a refill as my dog was out and I had not gone to the "new" vet yet, since we just were seen by Dr. Ako. They literally would not refill our prescription and even pass my message onto Dr. Gans. It was at that point that I knew they were not in the business to save or care for animals, it is truly just a number, monetary amount, and a business. I want a vet that cares for my animal the way a primary care doctor is supposed to care for me. After all, these are the same people that took an oath to do no harm but they literally were going to let my dog die instead of assisting me on getting the meds my dog needed after the last visit a few days prior. I will not step foot back in this practice unless Dr. Gans is the ONLY one I would see or he opens his own practice, which I highly recommend!!! I agree with a few of the other posters here, lack of communication could have solved a ton, customer service is lacking to say the least. read more

A trusted Vet clinic; clean; professional; courteous follow ups. I have been to about 3 others on island. I used to go to Kaka'ako Pet Hospital, but some of their service fees are much more expensive- so shop around. My 50lb, 6year old Catahoula has had dental extractions, vaccines, and check up here- no complaints. All clinics seem to err on the side of caution and prevention. (Tip: I like to stay very aware of what my pet needs and have an understanding of what may be pitched at me when I walk in.) Dr. Ako was amazing. I'm so glad we took our macaw Ipo to see him. As any long time bird owner knows, when a bird finally shows overt symptoms it's usually too late to save them as was the case for us. But Dr. Ako gave us the most responsible optimism he could have possibly given us. He also built up a lot of trust in me that other vets have broken. He always gave us clear cost-to-value plans of action and then have us his best opinion. What I'm most happy about is that knew that our bird was probably on its last moments instead of heroic and expensive treatments and sent her home with us so she could pass in familiar surroundings. Started taking my Frenchie here when Dr. Yoon was there. He's was awesome and then after he retired the customer service has gone down hill. Poor communication in the office and with clients. Paid 2k for recent work to include removing a mass. Results came back on the 11th and today is the 15th and still no call to say if the mass is benign or malignant. Their reason? Oh because the vet is on vacation and is the only one that can give the results. Hello, there's more than one vet, they should have passed on the info to one of them. This place is awesome! Very prompt, courteous and their app is great for online appt requests. I was a little worried when our vet moved here, but I had only great service! Dr. Ako is the most amazing vet my dog could have had. One early evening when he injured himself jumping, a hospital said immediate surgery and wanted over $1000 on the spot. I wasn't so sure as my dog was still putting a some weight on his legs, so decided to wait until the next day to see Dr Ako. After an exam, said he didn't need surgery, and gave us the 'why' then 'how' to care for him. And like he said, we could see improvement over the next week and my boy was back walking in two, no surgery. I saw that some people don't like Dr Ako because he is very direct with pet parents - but he is advocating for your pet, he wants them to be cared for the way THEY need! My dog is the first pet I've been responsible for myself, and a breed I didn't have experience with, he's been with Dr Ako since he was a pup (when Dr Ako was at The Pet Doctor). I've had to learn a lot and Dr Ako has been very stern with me, but once he sees you're putting in the effort he's super funny, and even cracks jokes at appts. My dog is now over 10 years old, still healthy, happy, still behaves like a pup and a testament to how great a vet Dr Ako is. If I didn't have to move us to the mainland we'd still be there. read more

We used to take our dog to a corporate run animal hospital but I didn't like it. I just so happen to read the reviews of Hawai'i Kai VC one day and decided to give it a try because of the raving reviews. I am so glad I did! Their covid protocol is amazing, staff are very kind and professional, we have a designated veterinarian rather than different doctor every visit. I am so thankful we found this place!! read more
