I was looking for a seafood place to have lunch with a view as well. My sister-in-law and I went here and really enjoyed it. She had the crabcake sandwich which was full of crabmeat. I got the sweet and spicy shrimp and a salad. The salad was large and the shrimp we're spicy. The food was great and the atmosphere and service we're just as good. My lunchtime experience here was terrible. We went for a birthday gathering, group from work. There were 12 of us total, we could not be seated together, they had to seat us at 3 tables; tables could not be pulled together. We ordered, the 2 smaller tables received their orders and were almost finished by the time the 3rd table received their food. The 3rd table was told no less than 4 times that their food would be out shortly that it was being plated up. A bowl of hush puppies were brought out (not warm) for the table in an attempt to appease them. When the food did come out it was not hot (except for the 2 plates of hot fries) for 2 of the orders. The shrimp tacos were cold and rubbery and promptly sent back. Then a key lime pie was brought out for the table in the form of an apology. And they automatically added an 18% gratuity on each of our checks. read more

This place is getting four stars from me for the lovely, water front location and fantastic seafood. The shrimp and oysters we ordered were the best we had on our entire trip, very fresh, huge and perfectly cooked. Unfortunately, everything else we were served paled in comparison. The sides and salad were thrown together and not very fresh. The hushpuppies were clearly from a box. If you go here just order more seafood and ignore everything else on the menu. When we first bought our house nearby, we went here to celebrate. And I'm glad we did. There was 9 of us and they were able to seat us with barely any wait time.. Both lunch n dinner gets busy in here so we try to come early. I enjoy lunch time more here. ( laughing, cause my girls are in school and I can enjoy my crab legs without sharing) It's very clean, the staff is alway friendly and the food is good. I mean GOOD! I had She Crab soup that was very good but not quite excellent. For my entree, I choose the soft shell crab. This came on a plate by itself with a little garnish and an unknown sauce. (I asked for cocktail sauce instead), I though the crab was really good, the breading was nice and lite and not over browned. The taste was excellent. I would definitely come back again. As shown by my photo, the view is excellent from the inside and there is outside seating available as well. First off was the excellent hot crab dip which we totally consumed. A great start to our meal. I had the Chesapeake Bay Burger which is topped by a great "1/2 crab cake" and cheese. Delicious! I opted to upgrade to the onion rings which were hand-made and excellent. (I am an onion ring snob). The steamed shrimp was declared "superb" by my wife who loves steamed shrimp. My wife also ordered the broccoli side (shown in my photo) which was so huge that it is considered to be two side orders. My broccoli loving wife was well pleased with this side dish. The Shrimp Poor Boy sandwich was judged delicious by my daughter. This was a great experience and we will be back soon when my other daughter visits. This was declared by my wife as we left and this shows how much she enjoyed her experience. I have no doubt all four of us will be well-pleased when we return. We always go to the Surf Rider when we visit my parents. I get the broiled crabmeat dish, which is wonderful, but really just about anything is good here. I can also recommend the crabcakes. Lots of people like to order the whole head of broccoli, but I think it is way to much so I usually get a salad and potato. The waitstaff is always friendly and the atmosphere is nice. We LOVE, LOVE, LOVE this place! We go every time we are even close to the Hampton area. The hot crab dip is fantastic! The crab cakes are really some of the best around and everything we have ever had here is great with regards to the entrees. The service is always good but if you go during peak hours or a Friday, Saturday night expect a wait. The locals keep this place hoppin and for good reason. Go for the food, the desserts are just ok but the seafood rocks. Order two crab dips and skip the pie. Once you try it you will want more. This place was just okay. The calamari appetizer was the best calamari I've ever had, fresh and not chewy. But the rest of our meal was just meh. How have I missed trying this place for so long? I had the fried seafood platter last night - flounder, shrimp, scallops, & oysters with two sides. Everything was perfectly cooked and delicious. The she-crab soup was some of the best I have ever eaten. The wife had surf and turf, with a nice steak and shrimp, along with two sides. We arrived about 6:30 and the place was packed. Even so, we only had about a 35 minute wait. Service was fast and efficient, and the staff was all very friendly and accommodating. Surf Rider came highly recommended by friends, and we just got around to trying it out a few weeks ago. I was ready t be blown away, based on the great things we heard and after reading lots of good reviews. While the setting is gorgeous, overlooking the marina, I was not all impressed with the food. On our Saturday afternoon visit, we added our name to the wait list and looked out on the water as we waited outside. The staff said to expect about a 30 minute wait, which was fine. After about 45 minutes, I went inside to get an update on our wait time. Can you believe, they accidentally skipped our name and already sat another 4-5 people ahead of us?! The hostess apologized and sat us immediately. Walking into the dining area and seeing SEVERAL empty tables available as we had waited needlessly was bothersome. We ordered the crab dip as an appetizer and that was just "ok". Minimal crab, but mostly mayo and whatever else comprises the dip. The pita rounds it comes with were good. We each ordered the fried seafood platter which was also just "ok". The breading on the fish was bland and hardly seasoned at all, the shrimp was fresh, but nothing special. Coleslaw and hush puppies, mediocre. We love good seafood, but this just wasn't up to our standards. Will not return and will not recommend. read more

At first was told the most they could sit at a small group of tables is 8 and wouldn't arrange the tables to accompany our party, despite the restaurant being close to empty. We all ordered, and three of us ordered fish tacos. We received the tacos and there wasn't even enough fish for half a taco on each. Was told by the manager that there is an up charge to add more fish. Mind you that the 2 tacos are already $12. Just fantastic! Finally I've found a place on the coast that serves fresh, delicious seafood. It was crowded when we got there, but they still seated us quickly. The food was super fresh, and they were serving very reasonably priced hurricanes that were tasty and potent. You MUST try the sweet and spicy shrimp appetizer - some of the best shrimp I've ever had. I had a seafood sampler, and all of it was fresh, tender, and flavorful. Food is generally pretty good but could be great. They over steam their fresh broccoli to the point of mush. Their other sides seem canned. If they are busy often some of the meal comes out cold. There are some really nice staff here and others are just testy. We do not have too many seafood restaurants here despite being right on the bay. This one could step up their game and become really wonderful but to me it feels like the same fried seafood platter you can get anywhere in America. Bland. The service in Surf Riders is horrible. My girlfriend and I decided to come here for her b-day since we heard good things about the seafood place. Once we sat the waitress asked us what did we want to drink. She gave our drinks and we asked her to come back in a few minutes. Well a few minutes turned into 15 minutes.From the way the waitress carried herself, I could sense she knew that she forgot about us. I felt like a dead ghost. Then when my girlfriend confronted her the waitress got an attitude and got smart . If she would admit she forgot I would have let that slide. I could see her punching order in the pc with an attitude so, we decide to leave. The sweet and spicy shrimp were amazing! I was so blown out of the water by the size, quality and quantity you got for the price but when it came to our entrees there was no effort put into mine by the cooks. I ordered Alfredo with blackened chicken, first off the chicken wasn't blackened....and it was burnt. It was crispy and dried out...hard to cut with a knife. Also I paid 16.00 for this plate and the sauce clearly came from a jar, it didn't taste any better than a jazzed up food lion jarred sauce, if I'd have known it was going to taste so bad I would've just stayed at home and made my own, it's not hard to make it from scratch it just takes dedication and time. I'm guessing the owner thinks no one will notice jarred sauce, well I did and won't be back. As for our service....impeccable! Too bad I can't take her wherever I go. Great Seafood right on the Marina. There is another location in Poquoson, which is equally as good. I have been a few times and most of the time it is delicious. However, it is a hit or miss. There are times that the food tastes a little off. They make a great she-crab soup, but it is not served daily. Their Caesar dressing is house made, so it is pretty good. I come to Surf Rider often for the crab cakes of course. A couple of nights ago, I came to eat and had the best waitress, Blakelei. Blakelei was so outgoing and me and my husband could tell she loves her job and cared about the quality of our service, even though the restaurant was busy. She made our experience so great and made us feel welcomed. We were very impressed by her attentiveness and knowledge about the menu. My husband was stuck on what "House Specialty" he wanted because he wanted try something new. She suggested some of her favorites and that's what he decided to get, and he loved it! I ordered the seafood trio which was broiled tuna, 3 fried butterflied shrimp and a medium sized crab cake, which came with two sides our a salad. I opted for fries. There was no sauce for any of the food but the waitress offered me cocktail sauce and butter. The tuna was waayyy over cooked. The crab cake was descent inside the crunchy exterior.
