This isn't a nice sit down spot; the interior is nothing fancy. However the tacos are solid! Whenever I order tacos here I get them to-go and have never had any issues. When we picked up takeout the other night they mislabeled a few of our tacos but thankfully the order was correct. My go-to the order is the Baja mahi taco and the garlic shrimp taco. It's one taco per order but they're very filling! They give you a ton of chips with your order, so definitely not necessary to order extra, unless you want the almost famous salsa bar (which I will say is worth it...their salsa verde in particular is so good). read more

What a disappointment! I had expected so much flavor and love from Surf Taco but it was just not it! First off, the girl who took our order looked like she hated her life. I stared right into her eyes as I walked in and greeted her with a smile and said hi. She just looked at me as if there was a fly on my forehead. I awkwardly stood there to read the menu and ended getting the mahi taco and the garlic shrimp taco all for a combo. Combo comes with nachos, beans and rice. I would skip this as the beans and rice were bland. They didn't add any seasoning but honestly it's kind of hard to mess rice and beans up. The chips were ok but you'd need queso cheese to compliment it which is extra. The mahi taco lacked so much flavor and the fried fish was cold. I was so disappointed but still ate since the food here wasn't exactly cheap either. Fortunately, the grilled shrimp was the come back for flavor here and saved the day. One of my friends raves about this place from North Jersey. He actually drove an hour each way to cater a party. It was nice the way they gave us all our own ingredients to heat up and assemble the tacos. They were good. I thought he was crazy to drive that far but he was happy with his decision. I was in the neighborhood and thought I'd check it out firsthand. Due to COVID, they're open for pickup only. There's a menu outside for you to look at so you can call. They had a good selection of tacos, burritos and bowls. The tacos come one to order but their pretty big. If your a big guy, you're going to need two to fill you up. My wife got the beef tacos. She said it was better than Taco Bell and she wasn't as worried about getting a stomach ache. I got the mahi taco. The cabbage, avocado and pineapple went together nicely. A location by the Avon beach that is a store front to the popular taco chain Surf Taco. The tacos we ordered were okay, unfortunately bland and a little watery from the dressing on the vegetables. Salsa left a lot to be desired, it tasted kind of watery and if they advise you one of them are spicy, I would assure you not, it's not. If you crave fresh tacos, I advise going to an authentic Mexican joint that makes handmade tortillas than tacos from this chain that has really floury tortillas and a watery filling. I like coming here especially after a day at the beach. It's bound to get extra busy in the summer so be mindful. They offer a lot of different options of tacos, burritos and platters. Its ironic that a place dedicated to surfing and located right next to the water would serve up tacos that were so dry you'd think they came straight from the Gobi Desert I got an order of the Surf Taco, the Mahi Taco, and the Mango Shrimp Taco. All 3 came loaded with tortilla chips (so many that we ended up taking about half of them to go for our drive back home). Each taco came loaded with veggies and greens on top of the protein - a battered piece of cod, blackened piece of Mahi Mahi and some fried shrimp. Sadly each one was very skimpy on the salsa and sauce, leaving each taco rather dry to eat. Separately, the 4 salsas on offer were all lackluster, missing flavor depth and heat. Honestly they could be better served by throwing an Old El Paso salsa on the bar for the chips. It's a sad day when a place you go to regularly, a local place you bring out of town guests because it's your favorite, a place that for the last 21 years has been a family go to decides to change the menu in order to "streamline so they can franchise!" As if the past few years hasn't been hard enough, we lost our soul of restaurants. Absolutely NONE of our favorite dishes survived the cut. But ok we take a breath and refocus. Jersey Bowl was a go to, now I try the Aloha Bowl. Basically it's a pile of rice, some strands of shredded lettuce and tasteless chicken. You would think a place named Surf Taco would have taco options- again the crispy taco was cut from the menu- only soft tacos now. The manager was brave enough to walk around and ask how everything was - we were honest, we were not happy. His explanation of streamlining did not make us any happier. I love fish tacos. That being said, these are not the best fish tacos I have ever had, but that's probably because I ate em every chance I had in SoCal. These are however, the best fish tacos I've had in NJ. Order at the counter, take a number, and find a seat where the staff brings you your food. Clean up is on you though. I've had the mahi mahi, salmon, surf, and shrimp tacos. My favorite is the Surf Taco, baja style, followed by the shrimp tacos. When i think of going down the shore, i think of beach, bars, strollos and SURF TACO!! I always have to hit this place up every time i come down the shore. I absolutely love it. I normally get the 2 taco combo- i've tried chicken, steak, salmon, surf taco, and they are all good- my faves are surf taco and steak I've also had the #4 combo with the maverick burrito with surf taco. Also delicious and filling. Buffalo calamari- GREAT! They have those cool soda machines with a thousand flavor options. Its a very casual set up- You walk in, wait on line, order, and they give you a number and they bring the food to your table. They have a salsa table set up. i love the salsa verde. I cant wait to go down the shore often this summer just to stop here every time! Although I'm a regular at Surf Taco, this is the first time I actually went to their Belmar location. All of their locations are in Jersey Shore towns, although now they have expanded to Princeton and the Rutgers area, too. The food and atmosphere are on par with the other locations. What I liked about their Belmar location is that it is fairly large given that space is expensive in that shore town. When people don't like Surf Taco, I think they just don't understand the concept. It's not supposed to be authentic Mexican food. It's a concept called "coastal cuisine," which is fun California-style food that the owner brought back to the East Coast after having lived in the sunnier state for a while. I got the signature "Surf Burrito," and it was delicious. I really like the salsa bar, as always. The fast casual concept also works very well for me. You can come on your own, you can bring kids, or you can come with a girlfriend. Everyone, regardless of how much time you have, or whatever the occasion is, will enjoy eating here. I have lived in jersey for 25 years and finally got to the famous Surf Taco. All you see when driving on the parkway is these bumper stickers on cars. Everyone always talking about the great surf taco, and how they are the best. I don't think they are the best tacos in the world, but they were definitely worth the drive. The fish is very fresh along with all of the ingredients used in the tacos, and when I asked for no cilantro, they actually listened. This is my go-to spot after a trip to the beach. The food is always fresh and really hits the spot after spending all day in the sun. I recommend their burritos since they are the pretty large in size and definitely will fill you up. The reason for the four instead of five star review is that service here is hit or miss. Since this is a really popular spot, the line can be quite long. It seems that they rarely ever have more than one cashier working at a time, and as a result the line can sometimes back up as far as out the door! Again, because it's so busy, the fountain soda machine is almost always out of ice, and tables are sticky from not being cleaned. I really think all of this could be resolved if they just properly staffed the restaurant during peak hours of the summer. It still is Surf Taco, and the food is awesome, so I will continue to go. Just beware -- don't come starving, because you may be forced to wait in line for 15-20 minutes during peak times. read more

Getting dinner at Surf Taco and then bringing it to Beach Haus Brewery in the beach town of Belmar might be that improved plan! When we got there, we found ourselves in a long line of post beach-goers, I squinted to read the menu to be prepared when our time to order arrived. When it did 15 minutes later, I picked the Surf Taco, Mahi Taco, and the Chicken Taco; my girlfriend picked the Buffalo Chicken Burrito for a total of $25. After 57 minutes from signing the receipt, we got our food. I wasnt sure why it was taking so long as it was pretty empty there at this point. The sun and warm weather was replaced with freezing wind when we stepped outside around 8. The whole walk to the brewery, I thought that these tacos better be the best tacos in the world. Part of me was even hoping they weren't anything special after that whole wait...but they were fantastic. The Mahi Taco was my favorite. It had a zesty taste to it, along with a large avocado chunk. The chicken taco was stuffed with large chicken pieces, and the Surf Taco was unique with cod and I believe tarter sauce. All three came with chips. I was so happy with the meal that I couldn't even be bothered with getting a beer until I was finished eating. The doors are forever flying open with people so the only down fall is you have to be prepared for a long wait to get your meal. Though there are long lines the lines here move quickly. Service is fast and efficient. The owners are surfers and have pictures up of all the places they have been to surf around the world. It is a little more laid back than Fins. The tacos tend to be a little soggy because they add a lot of sauce. I usually order the surf taco which is good. Their best item in my opinion is their shrimp taco. The best shrimp taco I have had. It is a little spicy with sweet Thai chili sauce. They give you a choice of salsas. Mild, verde. Baja and hot. What Happened??? IN BELMAR I use to love this place now it's not even mediocre. Just got 2 taco combos for $24. The fish was all lettuce. The beef was mediocre Chips were stale. The beans and rice were ok and that's sad because how do you mess up canned beans and white rice and if that's what I'm paying $24 dollars for ouch! The salsa bar had 1 gallon nasty bowls that had film growing on top because no one was there. And worst of all ... the soda machine leaked on you and tasted nothing like soda. I have been an avid surf taco fan until today. I went to pickup something for my stepson. I got the Buffalo Calamari. $9.95 plus tax and tip. $12.60 out the door. When I get it home, there is something less than 9 ozs. Of overcooked, rubbery calamari. Sauce was passable, nothing more. I called and complained. Apparently that's what your supposed to get according to the kid on the phone. No interest in making it right. I'll be speaking to the manager in the morning.
