We ended up staying in a beach house directly across from the surfin spoon the week of its reopening. It was busy with the reopening but the employees were quick and friendly and we even got to chat with an owner for awhile who was very friendly. Everything was delicious! We went back most every night while there. And we love how they donate to autism, it's a fun way to help(money is left basically everywhere... decor, ceiling, walls....) we love it! One of the best self-serve fro-yo places I've ever been to. Unique and delicious flavors and the toppings are plentiful. It's also very clean and well-maintained. If you're a sucker for decor, it's also a great looking restaurant. There are little tables and couches for lounging, some arcade games in the back, and lots of beach-y/surf-y accents. 150% recommend. Will definitely be back the next time we are in OBX. read more

This is an awesome little spot. It has self serve frozen yogurt and ice cream similar to other chain locations but this place beats them out with the fun atmosphere and killer toppings. They have plenty of seating and a small merchandise area. The ladies running it today were very friendly and made it a pleasurable experience. Let me lay this out: Simply, this is the BEST froyo I have ever had! As if that wasn't enough, they also offer 2 vegan froyo options. And again, as if that wasn't enough, 4 vegan ice cream cookie sandwiches. The place is so well decorated and CLEAN! The staff makes you feel like you're walking into your best friend's house, not a business! Everyone super friendly, very helpful, and kind. Loved every minute, every bite, and every topping! Of all the ice/cream and frozen yogurt places to pick, I am very glad we chose to travel a little bit and visit the surfing spoon! The inside atmosphere is uplifting to say the least. The ceiling and walls are lined with money ranging for pennies to dollar bills all of which are placed there by customers for donation to charity. Nothing like a heartwarming area to sit and eat some delicious frozen yogurt! Comparatively this place is similar to YUM or Sweet Frog. I found the frozen yogurt here to be a bit better than those, however. Spoon has a plethora of similar toppings and overall the value here is a very good price for vacation. I had the chocolate covered almond, cookie dough, and salted caramel frozen yogurt with some hot fudge, fruit, shaved coconut, and a little variety of other chocolates for toppings. Extremely pleased with my experience here. I would recommend coming here when they reopen for the season! Goodness, gracious. I'm in love. I'll start with the (sort of? I guess?) bad. Parking's a bit tough, perhaps. We did okay, but the lot is pretty tight. And no one drives a little car. But...not a deal breaker. We got in the door and there was a good sized line. But not to worry. It moves pretty quickly. Don't let it intimidate you. Now. The good. I think that's the best froyo I've ever had. I got the coconut sorbet (and then added shredded coconut on top). It was so creamy and refreshing. It's the perfect summer flavor. My boyfriend made his own Tootsie Pop with the chocolate and pomegranate berry. The price was reasonable, the decor was adorable and the staff were so helpful and friendly. The minute I saw the surf n spoon sign, my heart leapt and I already knew it was gonna be some good froyo. The only minor inconvenience was waiting In line in the sweaty, damp, Carolina weather. Also, there are only 3 tables to sit at, but we got anyway so I did not matter. As I entered this delectable shop, I was greeted my a nice lady with red keds. She seemed like she cared about me, and made me feel safe. I noticed as I walked inside, the bright colors and colorful merchandise lining the walls. The wait was only a couple minutes. The flavor options were immaculate, and need I say, they have vegan options for the meatless lovers of North Carolina. We were in OBX over the weekend and were in the mood for ice-cream after dinner and putt putt golf. The hubs and I had driven by this place on our way to dinner and I had previously checked out the website looking for dairy-free ice cream options in the area. The reviews for this place were great so our expectations were set pretty high. The parking lot was packed and there were literally people sitting on every single surface outside eating ice cream in groups... so our expectations remained high upon parking and our short trip up the walk into the store. So personally, hailing from food-service/customer-service background, I am always really disappointed when we aren't immediately greeted upon entering a store or restaurant. So you can imagine my elation when we were greeted by not just ONE employee but the employee at the register (who was smiling and genuinely just happy to be there), a second (roaming) staff member who was also a jovial-type AND the owner (I knew he was the owner from previously checking out the website). I'm a big-giant Introvert (with a capital I) so being greeted upon entering someplace like this can literally make or break my experience (because if I don't know what to do I have a really hard time asking and I will literally just leave before striking up a convo with a stranger about instructions). Anyway, the owner (who was incredibly friendly and happy to be helping us) showed us the process (which... there are literally signs everywhere telling you what to do but I was nervous/tourist/overwhelmed so I didn't even see the signs till after we paid). The ice cream was awesome. My husband got like chocolate with some reeses bits or something. I am trying to limit my dairy so I opted for the raspberry pomegranate sorbet (which was SO tart and SO good) and topped it off with a tiny dollop of coconut something-or-other and then loaded up with berries at the 'DIY toppings' section. So it's a weigh-your-concoction type of pay-situation. Which was totally fine. For around $13 we both had more ice-cream than we really needed/knew what to do with (amazingly we made it disappear (shocker. jk)) Anywho, there is more history in this place than can be effectively articulated in a Yelp review alongside an actual review, so I encourage you to check out the website and learn a little bit about the place and the owners and the history of both. Bottom Line: This is an OBX gem and while it's "touristy" it's about as far from the cookie-cutter ice cream spots you find at other regional beaches. It's full of character and run by some folks who genuinely care about the experience of both your mind and taste buds. A+. Very happy to assign a 5-star rating. read more

OH MY GOSH!! Seriously the cutest place! We were here twice! Would have been more, but they are closed on Sunday. (Which is fine!)
