Loved this place! They recently relocated to a larger place and we were delighted to see how busy they were on a Sat. Evening around 7pm in early January. So you musy try the Tuna Ceviche w/pineapples, it was a fun app. We order small dishes which were all good. Grilled prawns were excellent but be careful as this dish can be messy, so if your wearing white, just forget it!!! But you will be MISSING OUT- LOL Also ordered, were the chicharron sliders which did not dissapoint along with the cauliflower soup & autun blanco. The only thing I was not crazy about was the ceviche de pulpo which came with a somewhat of a creamy sauce. My overall experience at this restaraunt was amazing. We were greeted promptly as we entered and was seated right away. The staff was very friendly and helpful with giving suggestions for choice of drinks and food. I will say that the chef deft puts love into his food and I say this because the flavors behind each piece is cooked through perfection and the presentation reminds me of top star restaurants in the city! My son and daughter in law brought us here Saturday night for dinner. The food was absolutely delicious. I had the Corvina. I brought half home and I was so happy to be able to taste those flavors again the next day!! Husband had the paella over the black ink rice. Also, great!! We shared a few appetizers, mussels, fried mixed seafood, octopus. Quality ingredients and all well prepared! I have been many places in the world and have eaten at Michelin star restaurants. So Surfish was one of the hidden gems I randomly stumbled upon when I first moved to BK years ago. Their food is amazing!! I've literally never had anything to complain about. From their simple and delicious beet salad, to their mouth watering chocolate soufflé, you'll enjoy you're meal from start to finish. For appetizers the ceviche, beet salad, carnitas Tacquitos and the ribs are excellent. As far as entrees, I usually go for the Pollada or Salmon, never a disappointment. And if you have space for some more, go for the chocolate soufflé!! The meal also comes with delicious chips and sauce, and let's not forget about the SANGRIA. The service is great and the place is clean. I do miss the more personal feel and backyard of the older location, but the new location is lovely and spacious. Please try this place out. A really pleasant surprise! Ordered the ceviche mixto, fish taquitos, skirt steak, and shrimp risotto - all were excellent and the portions were very reasonable. We shared 2 entrees, a ceviche and the fish tacos and were stuffed. Highly recommend the ceviche - it was top notch. Also recommend sharing the risotto; it is very rich and delicious, but could not imagine eating the entire portion myself. Skirt steak was cooked perfectly and whatever side dish it came with (mix of plantain/bean/corn or something) was excellent. Service was decent, but a bit slow towards the end of the night. Very polite, but at times it took multiple requests to have my water refilled, get the check, etc. Interior lighting was surprisingly bright and probably should have been dimmed a bit (although this isn't a big deal) read more

There really is a quality in there food. I had tacos which had so much flavor. My 20 month old ate one which I was surprised cause it had a little kick in it. As well as a skirt steak stir fry dish which was great. It really had tasty flavors. I definitely am going here again to taste more of there food. I had a reservation for seven on Father's Day afternoon. There were two major problems we had with our experience. We were seated in the upper floor. There was one waitress taking care of the entire floor- four large parties. She had absolutely no help. It took a long time for her to serve drinks and food. She was visibly overwhelmed and stressed. My family was constantly trying to get her attention but we felt sorry for her. This is terrible service due to management. Manager, if you are reading this- one server for an entire floor on a busy holiday- really? Shame on you! The second major issue I have is the fact that we were seated directly below the vent. Cold air was blowing on us and it felt like we were in a wind turbine. Members of my party asked the (overwhelmed) waitress to turn off the vent multiple times, and she tried to increase the temperature on the central air monitor- yet the cold air continued to blow. There is no way this was a new problem. How could you expect your customers to have a comfortable dining experience in these conditions. And it wasn't like there was a manager to be called because this place is severely understaffed. Thankfully my Husband retrieved our winter jackets from our car. It was quite a sight- two adults sitting in their winter jackets in mid-June. I couldn't wait for our lunch to be over. The service was terrible and I was terribly uncomfortable having cold air blown down my neck. I'm sorry I couldn't enjoy Father's Day with my family. I hope this place closes down. read more

Today, I went for the first time. We ordered a cebiche sampler which was delicious and a jaleita. The jaleita portion was really good and tasty, however i could not find any fish there. It was mostly calamari, shrimp and octopus, also the"sarsa criolla" did not have any sliced tomatoes, maybe is the way the restaurant present it, it was ok. The drinks were ok too. I got a maracuya sour which was not strong enough...but good. For dessert we had flan and suspiro limeno. It was delicious. I will return to try other plates. read more

The management of Surfish ruined our Mother's Day! My review is based on this day only. You would think as an owner of a reputable restaurant you would prepare for a busy day such as Mother's Day. They should have had additional staff working in order to accommodate the large amount of people at their restaurant this day. My day went like this. We had a 3:30P reservation with my wife, toddler, and both set of parents. We got to the restaurant at 3:35P. Our table was not ready yet. We waited 15 minutes until our table opened up and they sat us down. They were cleaning the table as we were sitting at the table. They gave us the menu right away but we had to wait 20 minutes to see the waiter for our drink order. It took so long that we made the order for drinks and food scared that we would not see another waiter for another 20 minutes. The appetizer came quick so no complaints there but the problem occurred soon after. They ran out of the bottle of wine we had ordered. We asked for any bottle of red wine available and they gave us a pitcher of Sangria. We did not ask for Sangria. Then they didn't even give us plates to eat the appetizers and we waited another 10 minutes until the food went cold. The fish tacos were not as good cold. We then waited 40 minutes for the main entrees and were exhausted dealing and bugging the waitresses for help. We ended up spending $350 before tip and so disappointed that our hard earned money went to this establishment. I was a huge fan of this restaurant before this experience. Now my family and I will never come back. You ruined our holiday and wasted our money. read more

ASIANS BEWARE We have eaten in many establishments around the world and never experienced the disparate treatment received at this establishment. The treatment was racist and anti-Asian. We picked this establishment based on "Yelp's" reviews. On 3/6/19 it was 26° outside when my wife and I entered Surfish at 7pm and left at 8pm. We were greeted by a female with blonde hair with, "Do you have reservations?" - there were only 12 patrons (non-Asians) seated in the restaurant. "I replied "No". "Let me check and set up a table for you". We were seated right next to a table of 8 which was loud. We could have been seated away from the noise as the other non-Asians patrons were. At this point we were going to leave, but I wanted to see if this disparate treatment was an anomaly, so we stayed. While we were dinning, a party of 4 (non-Asians) entered and was never asked if they had "reservations" and was seated in a quieter part of the restaurant. 10 mins later a party of 2 (non-Asians) entered and was never asked if they had reservations and was seated in a quiet part of the restaurant. 10 mins later a party of one (non-Asian) entered and was never asked if he had made reservations and was offered a seat at the bar or at a table for 2 away from the loud party. After the 3rd seating it was obvious that Asians were not welcome here. If Surfish has a surveillance camera, the video will support my full accounting of what happened and can also be used for sensitivity training. We ordered a Chicken and Fish Taco and Sweet Plantain which was very good, and the server was very attentive. read more

Amazing paella, very good skirt steak. This is a really great place to try different Peruvian foods! It's a little bit upscale but it's amazing quality food, great service and beautiful location. I really like Surfish Bistro for sharing especially, so I like to go with friends or family. I tried quail egg for the first time here and it was really amazing. I heard great things from friends about surfish and was pretty disappointed. The waitress was very particular with how the ordering had to be done and bounced around to random people which was really annoying and confused everyone. Then gave us SO much attitude. Added extra stuff to our order and when we told her we didn't order that she threw a shit fit that we saw her talking to the other waiters about even all the way at the end of the meal. About a salad. One salad!!! She straight up said "I'm done with this conversation" when my boyfriend tried to apologize for HER misunderstanding. They ended up switching her out for a different waiter who did better but she left such an awful taste in all 9 of our mouths. Didn't ask for drink orders. Didn't ask once how everything was. Forgot to bring an order. All food came at diff times so we sat there waiting 10 min for the last person to get their entrees and everything got cold. Just the worst service. Like really bad. Def not coming back here mainly because of her. The food itself was alllllrighttttt. Some ceviches we didn't really enjoy. I liked the hamachi one best but still nothing amazing. Some dishes I didn't enjoy at all. Like the crispy oysters for example. I got the shrimp risotto which was reallly good. Def enjoyed it a lot. My friends got the skirt steak and salmon and chicken dishes. Which they enjoyed as well but no one was blown away. Flan was not good. The bill came back incorrect and had to be fixed. Unfortunately, this restaurant gets 3 stars due to the awful service. Although the dishes are hit or miss, overall the food was good. We arrived as a party of 9 and were immediately greeted with a rude waitress who was snappy and uninviting. When we experienced some confusion over an extra order of an avocado salad, rather than simply taking the salad back, the waitress insisted that somebody did in fact order the extra salad. She proceeded to walk two feet away from where we were seated and bad mouthed our table to another waiter. From that point on, she avoided our table the entire night. The ordering process was sloppy and there was confusion when the dishes were brought out. Also, entrees were brought out 15 minutes apart, making it impossible for the group to actually enjoy our food at the same time. When our bill was brought out, we pointed out that two of the dishes they charged us for were never actually brought out. Immediately after, this new waiter walked over to the initial waitress where they continued to bad mouth our party. If the service was different, we would definitely come back. However, this was not the case and we will not be returning to Surfish. read more

We walked into this place on a whim a few months ago, and I must say this is a hidden gem. It is a bit out of the way from Smith/Court St but it is worth the trip. The food here is unique, and always delicious. We ordered the Lomo Skirt Steak and Crevice as well as some Tapas that were on special. Everything was excellent and our party really enjoyed the food. If it wasn't for the company (my boyfriend) our date night dinner was ruined by the service and the food.  From disorganized and extremely inattentive staff (we had to work for their attention!), to very dirty utensils, a missed side dish (with no apology from staff!), to not being even offered dessert, and terrible tasting Peruvian food - this night was a disaster when it came to "spoiling ourselves". Now, I would say that it was a busy night and cut them some slack, but it wasn't! Instead these were all the things that went wrong: THE FOOD: I'm no food critic, but as a born and raised Peruvian, the food tasted like a cheap,sad and effortless American version of our cuisine. The ceviche was terrible, smokey instead of limey, and "fishy" (an adjective a good ceviche should not have!) My boyfriend's tacu tacu was like a mashed potato and risotto mixture - too soft - and tasted just like burnt American mashed potato. For those that don't know, tacu tacu is made from rice and beans and fried on a skillet. There should be no mashed potato taste there. My lomo saltado, one of the most loved dishes from our culture, was only steak and it's usual companions simply bathed in thick soy sauce with an unauthentic (and not even pleasant) flavor to this favorite.  THE SERVICE: First, when we arrived we were greeted by the bartender who was yelling at us across the bar if we had any reservations (we did!) and proceeded to point us at a couple of tables that were open for our choice. One of the tables had not yet been cleaned up but because of the ideal location we picked that one. A waitress went ahead to clean the table while we waited to be seated but after being done she just walked away without saying anything. Assuming it was ready(again, because she didn't talk to us), we sat ourselves. A few minutes went by and another server came over to ask us if we were ready to order drinks or food, which we weren't, so she said she would come back shortly. A few minutes go by and we closed our menus to let her know we were ready but we saw no sign of her. After a good 10-15 minutes of waiting and seeing several servers walk by (but not looking at us) we decided to ask a different girl if she could take our order. Unapologetic for the wait, she proceeded to write down our order. Our ceviche arrived and as we were still working on it, our entrees came. Now this was a problem for a couple of reasons. First, she never checked in with us to see if everything was ok/we had finished, and there was no communication with the kitchen to let them know we still had not finished our app.  For our entrees, my boyfriend and I ordered steak (lomo saltado) but only he received a steak knife. Expecting my knife will come soon or we'll be checked in with, I waited a few minutes. Upon our server walking back and forth without looking at us, I finally had to waive her over to ask for a steak knife. She turns around to presumably go get one, but instead starts talking to another server. Minutes later, (at this point my food is just sitting in front of me for a long time!) she comes back with a VERY dirty knife which I had to point out. She didn't notice it had food stuck to it. Almost done with our meal, we never received our side dish but decided to jut let it go, especially because again, no one had checked in on us and we didn't want to wait any longer for anything nor go through more efforts to waive someone over. She finally noticed we had finished our meal, took our plates away and asked if I wanted my leftovers to go. This server was clearly not interested to know how we liked our food nor if we needed anything else. When she returned with my leftovers, she just placed it at the table and walked away, never to ask us if we wanted dessert or our check.  Well, minutes and minutes later again, we finally gave up on waiting for someone and I decided I should get up to ask for our check so we could pay for a terrible night, food, SERVICE and finally leave.  Surfish management, I hope you recognize this review as a letter of complaint for this poor experience and have it in your heart to take action to better yourselves. I am sad to say I will not recommend this place to anyone. The only person that I thoroughly recommend is our buzzer who was attentive, smiling, apologetic without a need to, courteous, and overall great energy. Formerly in the restaurant management industry, i think this is a person that should be promoted to server and interacting more with your patrons. read more

Fist time here and the food was delicious. And contrary to other reviews (on Facebook) the service was great. The food came quickly and was very hot. Paella was a huge helping, filled with seafood and black rice, and enough for two. They are also willing to make any of the dishes to order to accommodate gluten free diets. Came here on a Sunday afternoon to give this place another try after a mediocre dinner experience a year ago. Food is expensive and barely passable. $12 for three, small fish tacos. Totally not worth it! The side of yucca fries took a long time to come out, so we were surprised when they arrived lukewarm, soggy, and dry on the inside. (Perhaps leftover from last night?) Coffee was $3, and tasted cheap. The service was the only real redeeming quality - the waitstaff was attentive and friendly. We live close by, but do not plan to come back. read more

Reminiscing my trip last year to New York. Stayed at a hotel in Brooklyn and saw Surfish across the street and had a feeling that this place was a gem on the corner and boy was I right. It was one of the best dinners I have ever had. The food and service was immaculate. My gf and I were in paradise our first night in BK. It felt right to be there and experience a lovely night in NY. UNFORTUNATE about sums it up! Been here a few times in the past. Amazing Chef but OBNOXIOUS STAFF!!! CHEF (PLEASE NOTE) - The food is great/consistent but returning to the restaurant just implies that being mistreated is okay. We've even went out of our way to order from this restaurant, even after moving away from Brooklyn. Here's the story. We decided to order instead of being served at the restaurant on Valentine's Day. First, we tried the system on their website (Caviar) and when choosing a pick-up time, the timing is off by a few hours (ex. choosing 4:30pm would bring it up to 1:30pm). So we then decided to order from DoorDash for pick up. We setup for a 5:30pm pick-up time and within 30 minutes after the order was executed, we've received a notification that the order was ready at 3:59pm. We've called up the restaurant to let them know of the situation. They tried to tell us that it's a DoorDash issue. We've then expressed our concerns that the food might be prepared nearly 2 hours prior to our scheduled pick-up. You can then hear the staff saying "OH GOD!!!". Definitely feel her impatience with our concerns that are not overwhelming one bit. My first thought is that this restaurant must be doing so well during the pandemic that they can treat their customer like crap. Quite frankly, I don't care whether it's DoorDash or the restaurant dropping the ball. I just want to know my order will be good and fresh at the requested time. So we finally got to the restaurant to pick-up. My husband went to the front of the restaurant with my phone plus DoorDash's info on the phone. There was a staff outside and my husband let her know that he was picking up the order for me. She then came back with the order but this time, my husband had an issue pulling up the order. So he told her that he would return in a minute with me pulling up the info as I was waiting in the car. She walked away and said "REALLY!!!". Our reaction was, what is going on with this restaurant and their SNOTTY STAFF. He returned within a minute with the order details. Little did he know, the same staff that walked away from him was the same rude staff who picked up the phone earlier. It's just surprising that they would treat a customer making a large order ($175+) I wonder how they treat others. Anyway, this day and age, I believe other surviving restaurants would be much more appreciative of the business. Don't need to be treated like royalty, just need to be treated like a normal customer. SURFISH is my favorite place in Brooklyn! I have never had anything here that wasn't delicious. In a word, the cuisine here is superb. The menu is full of options for meat and seafood lovers alike and is consistent in quality and taste. The bar is an attractive centerpiece, the decor and ambiance of this place is open and modern with a warm touch. Drinks are terrific--you must try the Peruvian liquors and fruit based ones. Now for the food: THE CERVICHE IS INCREDIBLE!! My favorite is the pineapple tuna, and the fried oysters. I also love the sampler where you can pick three different types. I crave the cerviche if I go too long without it. The shrimp risotto dish is a favorite, as is the steak dish and salmon with shrimp mashed potatoes. The fried yucca and tacu tacu are comfort food pleasers. The flavors here are layered and sophisticated, your tastebuds will be treated to savory notes from beginning to end. When I have had room for dessert, it has always been a perfect finish to the meal. This place is a MUST try...you will return to it again and again. read more
