Came here on Sunday 10/11 for brunch because we were going to Harbor Freights (which is nearby). This was the first time my husband decided to dine inside (he normally does take outs + rarely even dine outdoor). They are also part of the Yelp Peruvian Restaurant Week 11/15-11/30 special. Come try them out as they are delish! We decided to do the Brunch special $19 [Weekend12pm - 3pm, brunch entree with either a glass of Sangria or Mimosa, plus endless coffee]. -Ordered- * CEVICHE TASTING $22 a sampler of any 3 ceviches: OSTRAS CEVICHE, SALMON ANTICUCHOS, PINEAPPLE TUNA * ENTRANA & EGGS (add additional $4) Argentinian skirt steak with fried eggs (over easy) in tomato-panca sauce * PORK BELLY two poached eggs served with huacatay-hollandaise sauce and toast We got mimosa and OJ. Service was very slow and it wasn't as busy (one other table sat a few minute before us) and then 2 other tables later on after we ordered. We only saw one staff doing everything. All service to all tables were about the same-- slow but that could be because of staff shortage in the kitchen and front. We rarely saw the staff in the dining room as she was with all tables and then disappeared into the kitchen. It was cold and there was flies flying around. Tables doesn't seem to be very clean so we were wary and swatting the flies away from our food and drinks. Of all the dishes, I think I enjoyed the ceviches the most. Surfish offers a very ambitious menu that didn't really excel on any dish we tried. That said the service was good and their patio and overall ambiance is a nice! The complimentary plantain chips were pretty good- some chips were a bit stale/soggy but it comes with a yummy green sauce My fiancé enjoyed his salmon entree and the portion was generous. The sauce was tasty and they veggie variety was nice but the salmon was a bit over cooked I had the tuna ceviche which has really nice presentation but the flavor was kind of lacking and the fish was fine but not that delicious for a place that has fish in its name. I ordered their Papa a la Huancaina which I wasn't a fan of. It wasn't hot when it arrived and the main event, the pool of cheesy sauce, reminded me of the squirt cheese that comes as a dip with your movie theater pretzel bites. Overall, there's a very nice atmosphere here but I wouldn't come back for the food alone. read more

Excellent food. Surfish portions are generous and filling. Chef Miguel Aguilar's training with celebrity chef Bobby Flay is clearly evident. This is sophisticated Peruvian cuisine. Each dish has thought behind it. The flavors blend & are multilayered. Years ago I met the chef at the Taste of Fifth at the Grand Prospect Hall. I still remember the wonderful rocoto Chile foam he created for the event. Tragically, Michael Halkias, the owner of Grand Prospect Hall, died from COVID-19 on May 6th 2020. Subsequently, his building was sold in July 2021 to Angelo Rigas; it was demolished in 2022. Local residents signed a petition in an effort to save the landmarked building but it was demolished to make way for a residential development. Surfish is still here. Happy to see great restaurants survived the pandemic. Hopefully my small contribution of many takeout orders has helped. read more

I'm going to be honest - I've been meaning to eat at Surfish for years now. I'm a big fan of Peruvian food but hadn't really had any since visiting the country a few years back. But Surfish made me regret waiting so long! We did have to do delivery, but that didn't hurt any of the dishes we ordered. It was just two of us, but we're gluttons, so keep that in mind. We got the ceviche mixto, black paella, and the whole rotisserie chicken. The ceviche was fresh and zesty. The whole chicken was roasted perfectly and juicy. But the star of the show was the black paella, loaded with seafood and sausage. A ton of squid ink, so you can definitely mix in more rice to extend the inevitable leftovers. We love ceviche, so since we were in Brooklyn over mother's day weekend for a wedding, I decided to look for a place to get some. We came for lunch on that Saturday and the place was pretty empty. I ordered a pisco sour with passion fruit which wasn't that good. We weren't that hungry so we just ordered a bunch of different ceviches and a grilled octopus. The ceviches came on a cool platter since we got the sampler and picked 3 from the menu. All of them were extremely salty which overpowered any of the flavors they might have had. We were extremely disappointed so we decided to order another ceviche dish that was supposedly more of the "classic" taste - the fish and seafood in it were poor quality and the flavors were, again, non-authentic and way too salty. Even the grilled octopus sucked - it wasn't grilled/charred enough so it was very slimy and gross. We were extremely disappointed that we came all that way and didn't like anything we ordered. Some of their other dishes looked pretty good (from other tables that we could see), but I guess we'll never get to try them. read more

Pulpo Anticuchero- expensive waste of money. It was rubbery AF. You could tell someone microwaved it. Upset I paid so much for it. Lomo saltado - The hubby liked it. Prefers his own though. The staff is very friendly with a great attitude for top customer service. We ordered the Zappallitos Tapa, roasted zucchini filled shrimp, crest meat, and goat cheese for appetizer. Could easily get 5 stars but when a medium steak turns out to be over cooked that is going to affect any review. Being a Martini snob, I could easily take off another star but the host saved the day with her attentiveness. Read on. We were a party of 5 celebrating a B-day but we did not let the restaurant know that We started with the Ceviche de Pulpo and Ceviche Jaleita Martini (it's not a drink just served in a huge Martini glass). Both starters were fine. They also gave us chips with sauce. I would have preferred for them to give us two offers, one each for both ends of the table. That would have been a nice touch but whatever. Our main courses included, 3 Black Paella, 1 Entraña Tacu-Tacu and 1 Rib Eye Special. All of the dishes were well made and delicious save for the Rib eye special which I learned was over cooked. I suggested sending it back but the kid opted to roll with it. We had Churros and Chocolate Soufflé for dessert which were very good. Though, I wish the Chocolate dip for the Churros was thicker. Our host was very nice. She even went out of her way to get me the name of the hot sauce which I always ask for when I eat there . Our table had a few Cocktails. 1 Margarita and 2 Gin Martinis. I had both of the latter. The second Martini was well made with more Gin than the first one which was tad more on the vermouth than I would like. I will add that it would serve the business well if they had proper Martini Olive Picks. I was chagrined to find my Olives floating around in my drink on a toothpick (see photo). Which added to my utter horror at being told they only had Hendricks or Tanqueray Gin. Being a Bombay Sapphire lad, I had to bite the bullet and settle for Hendricks. Overall, a good experience and we were thankful that the place was not crowded. Our host was really attentive without the overkill and she enhanced the experience. Surfish is in our delivery rotation because they bring it (in terms of their food) every single time- no playing around with these guys. You may have noticed if you read my reviews, I love a good roast chicken. And specifically, I'm in love with Peruvian roast chicken. This version is one of the best in NYC- consistently flavorful, moist and delicious. It's definitely on my top 10 list for roast chicken. I'd like to start by saying that I worked in restaurants and catering for 30 years, and have seen my share of unnecessarily complaining customers. The last thing I want to do is be one of them. But I was excited to go on a date night with my wife to Surfish this evening (we had had a couple of nice meals there before), but had a lousy experience this time. We had good pisco sours and a nice ceviche (which is why I'm giving any stars here), but when our entrees came, my wife's salmon fillet was nearly raw. She said she'd just eat around it, but I politely asked a waiter to take it back to the kitchen. (I cook salmon once a week, and cook it just enough so it's pink and moist--and I have decades of experience serving properly cooked salmon.) This was a translucent, jelly-like piece of undercooked fish.) I swear I'm not making this up: the waiter gave me a look and she rudely said, "You just ate ceviche, right? THAT was raw"--as if the fact that we ordered an appetizer that was meant to be raw somehow meant that we should be okay with an undercooked $31 entree. She did take the food back to the chef, though, but my wife and I had to wait about ten minutes until the salmon came back. (Cooked right this time.) My wife was not happy with me for sending it back, but I don't think a customer should have to just accept under-cooked food. We ordered one desert to share, and had a good long wait for that. At the end of the meal, the waiter brought us a check for someone else's table. At that point, I asked to speak to the manager, and--though this was a busy Saturday night at 8 p.m.--was told that there was no manager on the premises. read more

Came here about a month ago to enjoy their outdoor seating. Unfortunately their rooftop was not available but they did have outdoor seatings in front of their restaurant so my friend and I were cool with that. The decor was nice. They had lights hung above to give their restaurant a warm cozy vibe. However more importantly, they had heating lamps to warm up their patrons so that was a very nice touch. My friend been here quite a few times and she has been raving about this place for the longest. She kept on telling me how their portions are huge and that they don't charge Manhattan price but Brooklyn price instead. Aside from that, she claim the quality of their dishes are top notch and they don't slide on cheapness. Of course, hearing her pump such high expectation, I was skeptic but as we sat down, I noticed everything she was claiming was quite on point. Their portion was HUGE. We ordered their black seafood paella and my gosh was it good. The portion was equivalent for 4 people, priced at $28. We also order a ceviche sampler and that was really tasty. As for their drinks, I had their red sangria and enjoyed it immensely. It was strong, fruity and just delicious all around. As for the service, our waitress was very attentive. She made sure our water was always full and made sure she came out of the restaurant offend enough so that we can call her if we needed to. Overall, I highly recommend this place. But the grilled octopus and pappardelle are killer entrees too. The Brussels sprouts wasn't bad either. The dessert portion is a bit small though, but not a deal breaker. This place could be a hit or miss. I have been there about four times and have mixed reviews about the service. We recently went because my wife was craving the soup and it was extremely bland. So we hardly even touched it and our server didn't even seem to care. The appetizers are always a hit are the ribs. I always suggest everyone get them when they go there and to get the mussels . The paella is a hit or miss. Sometimes it is bland or sometimes it's way too salty. Dessert here they don't tell you but it gets made to order for it takes about 20-25 mins. This food in this place is so good I went 2x in a matter of 3 days. Their lunch special is reasonable for the amount of food they serve you. I was full right after the app which I ordered the cauliflower and sweet plantains. For lunch special I had the corvina with the cilantro rice and omg!! Love it! When I went back the second time I had the jalea (this was amazing taste) and the salmon. My mom had ordered the lomo saltado and once again wasn't disappointed. It was delicious. My boyfriend and I chose Surfish Bistro as our first restaurant outing since COVID-19 shut everything down, so you can imagine our excitement to finally go out to eat somewhere. The outdoor seating was set up nicely, with the little fairy lights setting the perfect "date night" tone. We were sat in front of the restaurant alone, while the other customers were sat on the side of the restaurant. I appreciated being away from other people considering COVID-19, but this plays a part in the story later. I like that they give you a free app to munch on while you wait for your food. Unfortunately, the plantain chips tasted a bit stale. There was no crunch to them at all, as if they had been sitting out for a while. The rest of the chips in the basket were good though, and the dips as well. My boyfriend and I both ordered the lomo. The taste of the meat, rice, fries and sauce was great, but the meat was very chewy. I mean, it was chewy to the point where I was cutting it into tiny pieces, and still having a hard time chewing through it. My boyfriend finished his food first, while I still had more than half of my plate left, as I was still chewing and chewing. The woman who served us (seemed like the owner or manager, although I'm not sure) asked if we wanted a dessert menu. As someone who was a waitress for 12 years, I found it weird to be asked about dessert when I was still very clearly eating my meal. Around 10:30, one of the workers started taking up the chairs and tables around us. It said they were closing at 11, but I got nervous because I didn't know if we were the only customers left, since we couldn't see the other side of the restaurant where the other people were sat. I never want to be "that table" that keeps a restaurant open, as like I said, I know how it feels to just want to go home after a long shift of serving. We decided to get the check, and wrap up my food to continue chewing at home. As we left, I saw the other side of the restaurant had a table that had (seemingly) just been served. This was a little upsetting, as we ended our date night earlier because it seemed that they were closing up. Dining at Surfish was such a pleasure! This was my first time trying Peruvian cuisine, so I was very much looking forward to my meal. From the moment we walked in, to the time we left, we experienced stellar customer service. Our server was great! She was knowledgeable of the menu items, and gave us some great suggestions on what to order. I also appreciated that we were able to take our time and enjoy our meal together. Most places will rush you out once you get the check, but at Surfish, that's not the case. We started with cocktails and two selections from the cevecheria menu. If you love ceviche, like myself, this place is where you need to be! They have a wide variety of ceviches to choose from. My favorite was the pineapple tuna ceviche. This was probably the best thing I had all night. It was packed with flavor, and the fish was fresh. It's also a very large portion, so you could share this with two or three people. The mango ravioli ceviche was also really good. This was on the spicier side, but still tasted fantastic. Surfish also provided the table with homemade plantain and blue tortilla chips with salsa and avocado crema. I couldn't stop eating these -- so good! For our main course we got the black paella and the corvina. Although the black paella was nowhere near the way they prepare it Spain, I will say that the seafood was cooked to perfection, and had great flavor. The corvina wasn't really my favorite. It was topped with a heavy cream sauce which made my fish soggy and unpleasant to eat. Sigh... another Peruvian place whose papá a la huancaina falls terribly flat. Ordered the Pollada and Papa a la huancaina since it's probably my favorite food on EARTH... but was very disappointed. Chicken was flavorful and juicy, so that was okay. However, it came with a flavorless and extremely gummy mashed potato that had been way over whipped and had an unpleasant chewiness that mashed potatoes definitely should not have. The most disappointing part was the papá a la huancaina. It seems that no Peruvian restaurant around this area understands EVERY SLICE OF POTATO SHOULD HAVE SAUCE ON IT, NOT JUST THE ONE ON THE TOP. Why would I pay for a boiled potato with some leaves? Cmon, this is a total rip off. Also, the sauce was so garlicky to the point that we threw it out. No papá a la huancaina should taste like straight garlic. It's such a waste. I am disappointed more than anything because I had eaten here last year and the quality has gone downhill by a long shot since then. Won't be back anymore. I've been here several times and they have never missed in giving a GREAT dining experience.

Good food and ambiance but terrible billing practice. When check arrived it stated "Qty 6" instead of 4 people in my party. That allowed management to automatically add substantial amount of money for so called "Service Charge". I didn't spot this fraudulent thing right away but picked it within the next couple of days. Unfortunately it was too late to contest an automatically added service charge. In NY it is illegal to add a service charge for a party of less than 6 guests. I will contact the Department of Consumer's Affair and Better Business Bureau regarding this issue. read more

I was impressed with my first time experience at Surfish Bistro, this time, courtesy of Uber Eats. I always had a penchant for Peruvian food and so stumbling upon this spot was a welcoming discovery. From what I understand, the owner/chef is quite accomplished having trained under Bobby Flay and being a past contestant on Chopped. Just browsing the menu was a pleasure viewing the colorful photos of their selections and the descriptions of each dish. We were eager to try. Here is what we ordered: *Rotisserie Peruvian Chicken--2 orders (1/2). At $8, this came with no sides ($7 for sides) so feel free to combine with one or more from the menu. The chicken was cooked just right. Seasoned well, but not overdone or salty & complemented by 2 sauces--a cilantro green and an orange which I believe both were mayo based. I tasted better sauces, but the chicken was delicious and I would order again. *Twice cooked sweet potatoes. We made the mistake of placing 2 orders of this. While good, I believe the potatoes were baked then fried since it was oily. I try to be health conscious and if they were indeed fried, even lightly, I would pass on ordering it again. *Fried Quinoa with tofu & veggies. This was not a side but rather a proper entree ($18). The portion was huge and it was a delicious twist from the typical fried rice. The flavors were quite good, almost Asian like with a nutty bite, integrating tofu, red pepper, baby bok choy and zucchini. Really good. I enjoyed my delivery experience at Surfish Bistro and will definitely try it again as well as visit in person. Their portions are huge and prices are reasonable. My first East Coast Latin American cuisine experience was memorable for certain, low key, no frills establishment which serves delicious plates. We did a ceviche tasting (5 stars) , limo saltado, (Skirt steak stir-fry with onions, tomatoes, aji and fried potatoes), pollda ( Roasted boneless half chicken with mashed potatoes and herbs) and the rib-eye special ($65) and of course churros for dessert. I'm only leaving this review so the owner can see it- you have a staffing problem. We we witnessed an altercation between the blonde bartender and one of the bussers/runners when we were there - it was so uncomfortable, and regardless of what was going on, that should not be done on the service floor. Beyond that, her attitude was horrible. She was visibly annoyed we were there with quite awhile before closing up for the night - she rolled her eyes when she saw us- and if we weren't so hungry, we would have bounced. I could go on and on- and am happy to chat with a manager or whomever, for no other reason than it's hard to own a business only to have some cranky employee run off customers. This place was excellent in terms of service, food quality, and food quantity. Raw oyster ceviche: This is the only dish where it was a bit of a disappointment. The oyster taste was overpowered by how acidic everything was, in my opinion. But first impressions aren't everything. Shrimp bisque: wow, this was packed with flavor, homey, and you could taste the seafood in the broth. And they were generous with the helping of seafood in the bowl itself. There was some starch, I think Yuca, which, together with the pea risotto, added some textures. My bf and I shared: The Salmon entree: The salmon was without skin, and yet somehow I still tasted crispy bits, and the inside was tender! I'm not sure how the chefs got that texture, but it was pretty great. It had a touch of sweet, maybe some honey? Not sure, but I liked it. The huacatay was a nice herb to go with it. Squid ink paella: This dish more than made up for the slightly disappointing oyster ceviche. I could taste all the flavors of the squid ink, saffron, and the generous portion of sea food singing together. If there was one thing I'd change here, personally, I did think it was a touch over seasoned. Five stars. Easy. Flavor. Flavor absolutely everywhere in everything. My wife chose this place, specifically saying it is one of her favorite places to go for Peruvian eats. The ambience is very date like, intimate, even during the day. I looked around at how everything was set up and said to myself, if I had a restaurant it would absolutely look like this. We started with the pineapple tuna ceviche. Masterful. So much flavor in these little bites, we ended up scooping up the sauce itself with our tortilla chips and plantains. For someone new to ceviche, I believe even they could step to this beautiful dish and become a lover of this style of seafood as well. Before the entrees came out, my wife alerted me that she wanted to try something else as well. If you follow my reviews, then you know we are calamari lovers. We were able to find our fill in the Jaleita tapas. Again, texture, flavor, every bite was bigger and bolder than the last. The salsa criolla was so perfect for this, their years of seafood experience shown at every turn. Finally, we finished with the Black Paella and the Lomo Saltado entrees. The steak found itself with the sauce and the acid of the tomato. Each bite, medallion-like, a perfect sized morsel. However, the winner today by far: the black paella. Each bite, was like vacation. Eating outside on a deck with the ocean breeze. I went to Jamaica last year, and though they did not have this dish, I was back in Jamaica eating on the beach, and back in Mexico eating on the beach. And speaking of the ocean, the whole ocean was in it, prawn, shrimp, mussels, clams, I mean this is paella. The signature of eating this dish is the black lips you get by the end. Amazing. Amazing chef-driven cuisine with deeply refreshing flavors. Came here for lunch on a weekday and we were the only table, but got taken care of with impeccable service. The waitress was so attentive - not in an overtly nice kind of way, but exceled in little details like helping us fix the wobbling of a table and offering to split the soup into teo bowls, all without us asking. The food just blew us away. The octopus ceviche was everything you could wish for in such a dish. The shrimp tamale was so fragrant, and the rich sauce really elevated the whole dish. It was unlike anything I have ever had before. The butternut squash soup was creamy and the spices really shone through. The plating for every dish was beautiful - I love their fried lotus chips - and did I mention how delicious the drinks were? The pisco sour even came out in a chilled glass. Ceviche sampler was delicious! Cauliflower was good. Lamb shank very good, although kind of salty and should have come with rice or bread.

I've loved Surfish ever since the first bite of the Pineapple Tuna ceviche at the original location on 5th Ave. I didn't even know they'd opened up on 3rd until we wandered by recently, and just as with the other location, the flavors are on point, the food is beautiful (seriously gorgeous plating), and the service is excellent. Cobble together a light meal of ceviche and salad on a hot day, or get down with the entraña and eggs for brunch, it's a glorious way to kill a hangover. You won't be disappointed. But what I want to talk about right now is the Ostras a la Piedra. I used to live in New Orleans, and chargrilled oysters are a staple of many menus in that fair city. For some reason, nobody makes them around here. These oysters are the closest thing I've found in NYC (even with the latin flair of the huacatay sauce), and although they are a little pricey, they are far less than a plane ticket to the dirty south.
