The decor is gorgeous and the vibe is fun. The food just leaves me underwhelmed. It's suffered since the move from Glover Park. The "queso" in the overpriced three dip trio is like unflavored mayo, and the Mexican food (and all the food) at Millie's is better...which makes no sense, since same owners and Surfside is the one focused on tacos and burritos and Pacific meets Caribbean. The dishes are under seasoned, don't come together, need more sabor. I can't think of one thing I crave in between visits. Still, glad it's in the neighborhood, easy place to meet friends, easy for a casual dinner or happy hour, and the basic chips and salsa and drinks are decent. Love the spicy margarita! We used to go to the one on M Street and they have now changed location. I'm a bit disappointed that your no longer able to Customize but luckily I was able to change some ingredients. I love coming here as they have some of the best quesadillas I have ever had! Whenever you visit, really consider trying out their St. Croix quesadilla as it is packed with delicious shrimp and grilled zucchini. The homemade ranch that comes on the side is to die for! The chips and guacamole are the perfect way to start the meal as the homemade guacamole is incredible and pairs perfectly with the quesadilla if you have it on the side. Definitely try out their margaritas as well as you will certainly not be disappointed! read more

Have been eating in (or rather out, on their spacious patio) at Surfside for the last few months so this time decided to try a takeout for a change. This is a restaurant set up nicely for this service - takeout stand is separate from the restaurant. You can place orders there or order online directly from the restaurant for pickup only (have to sign up for an account first which is a bit inconvenient). Also on the pickup page you don't get to see pictures of the food whereas you do on the delivery page. Another thing is the pickup page has Apple Pay as the default payment and doesn't automatically show you an option for credit card payment so that's a bit tricky. Anyway we got our favorites - fish and steak tacos (there is an option for adding 1 additional taco per order for $4.45 which was nice), and flans (they make the best creamy flans!). Order was ready at the appointed time and pickup was a breeze. So glad to have this restaurant in the neighborhood! read more

I was devastated by the food. I'm a frequent at Millies because of the healthy options and nice ambience, but Surfside was a disappointment. A friend of mine ordered the nachos for us to split, but they came bare of toppings and little flavor. We then ordered a salad, beef and chicken fajitas, fried shrimp, and beef tacos to go. We opened boxes among our family to disappointment as the presentation was that of a public school cafeteria and the taste was too. They gave us a measly portions of meat for the fajitas and the side of beans was so small I thought it was a side of salsa. The shrimp was alright, but no one touched the salmon. The service at Surfside was excellent, but the food was AWFUL. We paid $160 for all this including two drinks. I won't be back and I would not recommend it. read more

A little higher in price than I usually pay for Mexican food, butI thought I should try a new spot. I ordered 2 appetizers and an entree, it came to a little over $64.00. I know, my eye brows went up too, I kind of wondered if I should? I was hungry! As a 20-something who has been in DC for years, I am of course familiar with the incredible surfside taco stand in Dupont Circle. I even had the chance to visit their former location before it closed. However, this knocked my socks off. I first visited this location while my parents were visiting to pick up an order. I found the pick up counter incredibly easy. My parents were impressed with the food (and there were a few comments of their jealousy that this was the food I'd get after a night of drinking). The second time I visited was to make an order in person and take it home. Again everyone was super nice and it was incredibly easy. My third visit was to finally have dining within. This is one of the few times that I have eaten out during the pandemic and they had a great setup. Fully open, and plenty of seating on the patio but the tables were far enough apart. Although there were some bees and birds, it was worth it to be able to sit outside. Our waiter Luis was the perfection of good service: he was incredibly helpful yet unobtrusive. Overall, I have been thrilled with how easy it has been to visit. Of course the food is incredible. I love the spicy margarita (getting a pitcher is a fantastic decision). Their queso is absolutely delicious, although I think the salsa trio is incredibly interesting and my favorite accompaniment for chips at Surfside. Their tacos are delicious, I have recently been getting the shrimp ones and loving them. The yellow rice that comes with the tacos is my favorite thing (of all time) to eat while drinking alcohol. I do not think one can order wrong, I have never heard of someone saying that they regretted their surfside order. Welp... it's an actual first: in short, an angry employee told me I couldn't eat my food at a table and that I needed to leave. I had never been to the Wisconsin location before (I ate at the Dupont location once about 5 years ago while visiting family in DC) but walked in today and ordered at the counter. I put down a 20% tip even though I hadn't received service yet and asked the woman taking my order if my food would be brought to me or if I needed to come up to the counter to get it. To this she said that they'd call my name. I go to sit down at a table (plenty of choices as even though it was lunch hour not a single table was occupied -- just two men at the bar). Soon enough, an angry, I kid you not, female employee comes over and tells me that I can't sit because I ordered takeout. When I tell her I didn't order take out, she points out that there is a different stand to go to if you're dining in. That was not obvious, but I had also said plenty to the other employee to indicate I thought I would be eating my food at a table (such fancy demands, I know). The problem was she (1) was angry, (2) told me I literally could not sit at a table even though the restaurant was essentially empty, and (3) didn't "let one slide" as I was a new customer and had just ordered a $30 meal of tacos and guacamole. I ended up canceling my order and leaving. I feel bad for the wasted mahi, but I do not feel bad about getting my money back from these jerks. When I told a local about my experience, she replied, "oh yeah they're pretty awful and run by jerks." read more

The food is almost always good. However, with the new location, the management and rules seem to have changed, the portions are smaller, and the prices are much steeper. Every time I go they seem to find a new way to charge me more. On one order, I substituted avocado for meat - at their suggestion. They next time I did that, they charged me $4 for avocado and said that they had changed their policy. When I told them I didn't want it (since it cost more than 1/3 the cost of the burrito), they told me it was already made. They serve some items at the takeout stand in the restaurant that they don't offer inside - and don't have any explanation for it, though I'm sure it's not a high enough price point. I used to love this restaurant and it was one of my all-time faves, but they've taken all the fun out of it by sucking every cent out of any opportunity. It used to have a great vibe but not anymore. Atmosphere is super cute outside, was bummed slightly because google says roof deck, I thought that meant like roof top seating, but it just means covered deck basically. This location is especially good because of the ample outdoor seating area. You have to order chips and salsa they are not complimentary. Surfside is nice. On Tuesday they do taco Tuesday. You can choose a taco entree and you get an additional taco for free. I had steak and brisket tacos. The meat was tender. I enjoyed the steak tacos more. They came with guac and bell peppers. I like that the brisket tacos came with a fried shell. The tacos weren't the best tacos I've ever had, but they also weren't the worst. Topped it off with a spicy margarita. The drink was good. read more

If you're expecting this to be similar to the previous location in Glover Park, be prepared that this is closer to Millie's in Spring Valley. That includes the vibe, the restaurant interior, the large bar area, the menu layout and - yikes - the prices. I used to pay $11.95 for the two-taco combo that set me back $14.95 here. They also didn't have the free extra taco on Taco Tuesday, citing the newness of the restaurant. Still, the food was as good as ever, at least the Cabo San Lucas that I always get. read more

The food here is generally pretty consistent, but not remarkable. Will generally pay a little more here than at a Cactus/Los Cuates, but you're also paying for a little bit more aesthetic - this location is certainly more expansive than its original Glover Park footprint. The chips have always been pretty disappointing here (especially since they are not gratis) and does knock them down a little in comparison to comparable restaurants. The food was meh, everything on our table lacked any taste, the guacamole was basically chunky pieces of avacoda, the dishes we ordered were plentiful but nothing to write home about, and the drinks, while tasty, barely had any alchohol in them.
