I've been going to Surin 280 for many years, and it continues to be a favorite. They offer a great selection of popular Thai dishes along with a full-service sushi bar. I usually order from the Thai menu, and there's always something that sounds--and tastes--delicious. I had lunch here with friends on Monday and was happy to see the restaurant bustling with customers. The lunch menu features a smaller selection from the full menu, with options ranging from Thai Beef Salad to Thai Catfish, two of my all-time favorites. Lunch entrées come with a cup of tofu coconut soup, which is excellent--full of ginger, garlic, lemongrass, mushrooms, and tofu in a savory broth. This visit, I ordered the Roasted Duck with Red Curry. The portion was generous, with several pieces of duck cooked in a flavorful red curry sauce with kaffir lime leaf, basil, pineapple, red bell peppers, and fresh tomato. It was served with a side of white rice and was absolutely delicious. Highly recommended if you're in the mood for quality Thai food in a lively setting. read more

This was my first visit here. My best friend and her parents invited me to dinner to celebrate her birthday this year. After looking at the menu and asking for suggestions, I ordered the spicy beef noodles. As an appetizer, I also sampled the pot stickers. The good: The restaurant is very nice inside and I enjoyed the decor. The serving size was plentiful and I ended up with almost an entire portion in my to-go box. The not-so good: The beef had a good flavor however it was kinda...tough to chew. The dish wasn't really spicy though advertised as such and the veggies were very undercooked. The pot stickers were decent. I didn't care for the noodles as they had a weird texture. Final thoughts: Outside of another invitation here, I'm not sure I would return on my own. I enjoyed celebrating my friend and catching up with her parents who are like family to me as well, so overall I enjoyed the visit here just for the fellowship and ambiance. read more

We have been to Surin 280 probably over 30 times. Never really had a problem with service or food in the past. Today that was different. it was just two of us. From the time we were seated to the time we paid our bill it had taken two hours approximately for us to complete our dining experience during lunchtime. Our order wasn't complicated. Two waters, a chicken noodle bowl and a 6 piece sushi roll. That took 2 hours to complete. That is unacceptable. read more

It was fantastic! I ordered the fried rice, drunken noodles, and a side of Thai curry sauce with steamed rice. Everything tasted amazing. The flavors were rich and authentic, and the portions were satisfying. The drunken noodles had a nice level of spice and were packed with flavor. The fried rice was cooked perfectly and paired well with the rest of the meal. One thing I really appreciated was the service. I asked the waiter if I could just get a side of Thai curry sauce with no vegetables or meat--just the sauce--and she understood exactly what I meant. She brought exactly what I asked for without hesitation or complaints, which made the experience even better. The ambiance was also really nice. The restaurant had a warm, relaxed atmosphere that made it comfortable to sit and enjoy the meal. I've been coming here for years and years. The Thai Noodle is my favorite and I get it 90% of the time. The past few visits the food quality/taste has decreased, but it's been okay. Today was different and the food was borderline inedible. The Thai Noodle had absolutely no flavor and it was like eating plain noodles. If it wasn't a take out order I would have sent it back. No one was mean but this is aerify the worst of the worst. And years ago it was the best of the best. Basically zero serving at all and what was ordered was not what I received or expected. Which every other restaurant I go to the servers speak to me and make it very understandable to what is getting ordered. And they actually dropped off food at the table beside me to a couple that had sat down several minutes after I had even already ordered my meal. Decided to grab lunch at Surin on 280, it' been a while since I have visited this location. I was seated at my preference of a booth. The young man who seated me took my order for the Spicy Beef Salad with Surin's dressing on the side. He immediately sat down a hot cup of Spicy Coconut soup, delish! The meat and vegetables in the salad were plentiful enough that I finished the rest for dinner. However, the meat had an overwhelming char taste to it (I think that's what it was) but overall not too bad. The fourth star is for customer service. Jacob was very attentive throughout my lunch. Although not a bad meal, on my next visit, I will order one of my faves, the Succulent Catfish or the Chicken Noodle Bowl. read more

The food at Surin is generally excellent, but a dinner on a Friday night when you are promptly seated and promptly order should not take 1.5 hours receive your food. Our orders were not special - standard curries, but we waited and watched as table after table which had seated and ordered after our table was served their food. If the kitchen is running as slow as this, there should be signage for people up front so they know what they are walking into and waiting for. Overall it is disappointing, and I would not recommend dining unless you have a couple several hours, once seated. read more

A couple of friends and I visited on a weeknight for a casual dinner. The place was very laid back and spacious, we were seated right away. Service was solid. We ordered the chicken pad Thai, a friend on keto got a beef salad dish, and I got the chicken panang curry that was delicious. We were all very happy with our dishes. I hear they have fantastic lunch specials and some famous noodle dish that's only offered at lunch which people go crazy for. Overall this experience was solid top to bottom! Ok so sorry to have to lower my rating but we had a bad experience a few weeks ago. We love Surin (both the 280 and downtown location) but we won't frequent the 280 location again until they fix their issues. We came in around 6 pm on a week night and were seated immediately. The restaurant was not busy and relatively quiet. I ordered my standard super crunch roll and a yum yai salad and my husband ordered the spicy beef salad. Our server was nice and fast but that was where it stopped going well. The super crunch came in a reasonable time and then our salads were delivered. My husband got about 3-4 bites in and noticed something- hair and not just a hair - several hairs. He called our server over and the server immediately took the dish away with not much apology or surprise. At this point I was worried about my salad. He waited and waited and finally a new salad arrived. We expected that maybe a manager or someone would make a stop by or at least comp the dish. NOPE- the bill arrived with the salad on the bill and my husband asked for the manager since the server was not understanding our concern. In retrospect we should have just left the restaurant in the beginning but wanted to give them a chance. In the end the manager gave us 10$ off stating they made the dish again and it was supposedly right...... did you really make it right? We will be passing up on this long time favorite until they can get the hair out of their food. read more

Spicy Basil Leaves should be renamed "Bland, Basil Less, Below Par Stir Fry". Absolutely zero heat, 3 slivers of one basil leaf, and did NOT substitute onion for bamboo shoots. I'm not sure why it says no green onion, since this dish does not come with green onion. What an absolute joke to charge $15 for a dish that barely comes with what it's titled. The food at Surin is always top notch. There are two locations, but I prefer this one because it's so close to 459 and the space is bigger than the one in Mountain Brook (lots more seating). My go to meal is the Chicken Noodle Bowl and my husband prefers the Thai bbq Chicken. The atmosphere is chill & the menu keeps us coming back for more. The service is not in your face, but they always make good recommendations as well -- don't leave without trying the creme brûlée for dessert. read more

My friends have been telling me how great Surin is and inviting me to join them. After 6 months, I decided to take them up on the invite and they were not wrong! We had a table of 8 and we all had a martini or 2, our server, Taimo, was amazing! I had a peach martini and the sweet and sour chicken. The martini was heavy on the alcohol, but they're supposed to be, right? Lol. Anyway, my friends enjoyed the wedding cake martini and the blue dolphin. My sweet and sour chicken was really good and I tried a spoonful of my friends coconut soup and a bite of the curry chicken. We go here pretty often and especially like the appetizers and the lunch specials. Here are our three favorite things here... Roasted Duck with Red Curry because that sauce is a good combination of sweet, savory, and spicy and the duck is usually cooked very tenter and flavorful with a good balance of lean meat and crispy duck fat. Crab Angels have a delicious and warm cream cheese center with just a little bit of meat and a crispy shell. The sweet and sour sauce that comes with it is one of my favorites in Bham. Coconut Soup with Tofu - This comes free at lunch but even when we come for dinner we order some because it is one of our favorite soups in Bham! Creamy, spicy, hot, and delicious. We probably go here once a month, take friends here, and are always happy we came. Never a bad experience. This isnt a place Im usually jumping to go to but it is one of my wife's favorite places that comes up pretty often when she is asked where she wants to go and I rarely say "no" when she says she wants to go here so I must like it pretty well myself. I was noticing yesterday that the service is good but I would really like to see it step up a notch. They are pretty much order takers and food runners. They rarely anticipate my needs, make suggestions, do anything special, or do things without me noticing. I placed an order to go. I got there and my total was significantly high then expected. It seems that prices have really gone up. I asked the person at the pickup area, and he just looked at me strangely... I would have been better off if he just said yes we had an increase. I got home and realized the old menu has the dim sum as chicken and shrimp, and the new menu is chicken shrimp and pork. I must have been looking at an old menu. So that was my fault, but I was sad to not be able to try the dim sum. Make sure you are looking at the most recent menu when you order as to not make the same mistake that I did. read more

The restaurant itself appears to by a previous O'Charleys and the new owners have not changed a thing about the layout or tables. The atmosphere was casual. Could use more of a Thai touch of elegance. The service was decent and our waitress was friendly. The food did not disappoint. We ordered the crab angels, the double shrimp sushi roll, the pineapple shrimp with fried rice, and the pad prik with beef . Came here for dinner and ordered the coconut soup with chicken as a starter. It was good. For my main course I ordered the spicy beef salad. If you like a lot of beef, this is for you. I Iiked it but I could have done with a little less beef and more salad. It was swimming in the sauce which was a little too much for me. Hubby got sushi since he is not a thai food person. He didn't particularly care for it. He said it was too fishy. I would like to come back again and try something different. We would also like to try the peanut butter pie next time.
