Wednesday, July 31, 2019 My wife and I just got done eating at their lunch buffet. It was delicious and filling. We paid twenty-four dollars with tax for two people and two drinks. For starters their hours: Mon-Fri: 11:00am - 2:30pm Saturday-Sunday: 6:30am-2:30pm The food is simple down home country fare. The chicken fried steak, catfish, mash potatoes, cabbage, and biscuits were delicious!!!!! That is the best chicken fried steak we had in a long time. The outside was cooked to a nice thin crisp. The inside was tender and full of flavor. I put the salsbury steak gravy on it and OMG! The catfish was cooked to perfection. Not to crispy on the outside and not over or under cooked on the inside. The best part was the banana pudding. It looked a bit thin so I was not sure about it at first. The first spoon full that hit my mouth knew my doubts were totally unfounded. This was amazing. My wife dislikes most banana pudding because it is just vanilla pudding with bananas in it. She couldn't stop saying, "Wow!," while looking at it. I asked the waitress there how they made it.......the pudding is 100% homemade. Not a bit of it is from out of a box. The taste and flavor shows the time and care they took to make this dessert. All I can say is if you like down home country cooking and you are live in or are passing through Caldwell, TX when they are open, YOU SHOULD give Surrey Inn Restaurant a try. This is the best place to eat in Caldwell by a substantial margin. It is not perfect, but it is definitely solid. The other restaurants in town .... well ..... er ..... Best to just talk about the Surrey. This is a buffet. The food and the clientele are country. Like 1000% country. Hank Williams and Buck Owens country. Waylon Jennings would be too trashy. Lady Antebellum would be too glitzy. One wall has a giant American flag, with watercolors of flowers on either side. The opposite wall has a fireplace, with an antique grinding mill, a large dried flower arrangement, and the Holy Bible propped on top of the grinding mill. Next to the Holy Bible is a painting of the two founders. The crowd is local, and like Caldwell itself, is heavily elderly. Lots of wheelchairs. Lots of canes. Lots of more physically fit but definitely retired people. There are workers right off the truck with their clothes dirty from whatever they were doing who have to go back on the job after lunch. Everyone seems to come at 12 noon and empty out by about 12:45. I came at 12:30 and much of the buffet had been eaten up. How is the food? The buffet "looks" terrible but tastes great. This is a case where appearances can deceive. You think you are going into a homemade version of Furr's cafeteria, you fill your plate gingerly, and then surprise surprise, everything is really nice. They do a shrimp casserole with tiny little shrimp and veggies - that hides a real tabasco kick. You think the dish is going to be mild. Its NOT, and that's good. They do an excellent chicken fried steak. The steaks are thin and light, the crust is homemade - and looks thick but is delicate and the gravy goes light on the black pepper so you can taste what you are eating. Lima Beans have excellent bacon/pork flavoring. Beans are comforting. These kind of places often have great desserts. I want for the banana vanilla wafer pudding - and discovered that my childhood love for vanilla wafers may have been a bad idea. The pudding part was homemade and was just fine. The Surrey provides good honest homemade food with some pretty fine recipes. And the people who run the place are nice. Note that they have had a number of different "restaurant concepts" at the Surrey and not all of them have been successful. The current version look like a keeper. read more

I've heard complaints about this place, but we used to eat there about 15 years ago, and I had a meeting in Gause, Texas. We decided (5 of us) to stop at Surry and 'give it a try'. I warned my associates I hadn't been here in 15 years, but I remembered they used to have a pretty good CFS, and I always enjoyed the catfish. Well, when I asked the waitress what was on the buffet, she said "liver & onions, Mexican casserole and spaghetti". I was disappointed, and told her I was sure hoping they had CFS. She looked surprised, and said, "oh, well it's ALWAYS on there, along with catfish!" Good news. The place is old and tired, and I'll agree that the buffet is not a feast for the eyes. But the CFS was just as good as I remembered it, and the catfish was excellent. I tried some of the other offerings, but went back for some more fish and a small piece of CFS. Not a GREAT place to eat, but you can get filled up for $8.00! read more

This is by far the best home cooking that I have tasted in the Brazos Valley! The banana pudding is divine.

Another time I wish half stars were available, because I kind of rounded up to three. It's not that the food is bad, because it's not. It's because while the food's okay, the restaurant itself is none too clean, and the owners have really skimped on everything from creamer to ingredients. Our breakfasts just kind of *tasted* cheap and Sysco-y. I'm looking forward to trying its lunch buffet, which looks to be comprised of chicken-fried steak and mashed potatoes and general Midwestern-style fare. read more

I will never ever go eat at surrey inn again in Caldwell. The owner Rob is a complete ass. We got charged two kids buffets for the babies because we put food on a separate plate for them and because they got food on the floor. Very very bad business. When you walk in the place there is a sign outside identifying the proprietor as a 1974 graduate of Texas A&M. Well, he certainly didn't go to culinary school. The lunch buffet is totally dismal. Everything seems to be from a can or frozen. Gravy was watery an probably from a mix. CFS and smothered steak were cold. Drop biscuits and cornbread, obvisouly from a mix, cold. My CFS had a hard, bonelike substance in it, but it wasnt a bone. Asked for unsweet tea but was given sweet with enough sugar in it to send me into insuline shock. The food has NO SEASONING! Oddly, there was a crowd. From what I could tell they were mostly oil field crew types or other people who don't have much time to eat, thus the appeal of the buffet. The staff are mostly nice younger ladies, so there may be something to that too but I'm only passing through! Save your money and spend it at one of the nearby fast food places. read more

When I want homecooking, I go to the Surrey Inn. On the buffet line at anytime, you'll find chicken fried steak, roast beef and fried catfish. On the dessert line they usually have some sort of cobblar or banana pudding. read more

Since they re-opened I have to say that food in Caldwell is just a total bummer :( Banana pudding so watery that you needed a straw to slurp it up. Hard over cooked gizzards and livers. BLAND GROSE gravy and even blander catfish. I used salt but nothing helped. Never again read more

Food is absolutely bland. You can tell the staff there takes NO pride in what they serve to people. Waitresses are stuck up and can be rude. Asked for a manager and was given a lady named Susan who it was obvious had not a clue on what was going on. I also had a chance to meet the owner named Rob, who while a little nicer than the waitress also was totally clueless when it came to the food being served there. Im sorry but even I can follow a recipe and make food that taste better at home, or if I need to stop and on the go I guess a Mc Donalds would be a better choice then this place. Food used to be decent untill recently, now it just seems kinda thrown together and its either tasteless or way to seasoned. Staff isnt unfriendly but kinda seems stuck up like this is a 5 star place. We were in the area for the weekend. The nearest Kettle Restaurant was 30 minutes away and they seemed to serve similar plates, so we decided to try it. My daughter and I ordered the "hot" chocolate. It was obviously a generic Swiss Miss type powder which was bad enough. I mean it was made with water, no milk at all, no whipped cream on top. And to make matters worse, it was less than lukewarm! Ick. My daughter got the chicken fried steak breakfast. The "steak" was a hamburger patty. Weird! My husband got the buffet which he said was unremarkable. I got pancakes and eggs, or should I say "bread-shaped-like-pancakes". Those were the strangest pancakes I've ever seen or tasted. They did not taste like pancakes even with the syrup on them. And they were gigantic! Too much baking powder or something, I guess. The best advice I can give about this place is "skip it". read more
