I stumbled upon the Surrey Diner--a small, hole-in-the-wall gem just off the interstate behind a gas station--and this quaint little diner packs a punch! They've got a fryer, flat top, and grill--old-school diner essentials. I had a burger and fries, and it was exactly what you'd hope for. The flame-broiled burger was juicy, full of that perfect beef flavor, nestled on a soft bun. The classic crinkle-cut fries were just right. But beyond the food, the atmosphere was something special. The staff was friendly, and the patrons were straight out of a small-town diner scene. There were two elderly couples sharing a meal, one distinguished white-haired gentleman with a cane and his wife with a classic beehive hairstyle, and a pair of hardworking blue-collar "bubbas" who looked like they'd just stepped out of the auto shop for lunch. The jukebox was playing classic '50s tunes, adding to the nostalgic vibe. If you want a genuine, heartwarming diner experience, I highly recommend stopping in. If you are not looking for it, it's easy to miss. We were on the way to Charleston and needed to stop for lunch. This place hit the spot for the following reasons -right off of 81 -next to a gas station -good coffee -clean bathrooms -friendly service -quick service -very reasonable prices As I mentioned the place is small. It feels like not your typical roadside diner that caters to travelers versus the local people. There were many people stopping to pick up to go orders. I ordered the bacon double cheeseburger. Only $3.95???!! They patties were big, cooked perfectly. The chips were ok. Living near the place where potato chips were born (Saratoga Springs,NY) I have a high expectation for potato chips. The chips were cold and some were not fully cooked. They also needed salt. For a spot to stop with good food, good coffee and great prices this is worth the stop. Found this small diner on Yelp while passing through on the interstate. Appears to be a very popular local lunch spot with salads, sandwiches, and "meat and 2 or 3". I had a safe choice chef Salad which was just fine. Friend has a good club sandwich which was good. Other friend had a salad with grilled chicken that he ate "but would prefer Zaxbys". Other diners had a good variety that looked pretty good. Clean and friendly. read more

Quite possibly, the best place to eat along I77. Great food! Chicken and Dumplings was excellent! BBQ plate was unreal! All homemade, all fresh! Very clean place. Surry Diner is a very small hole-in-the-wall place tucked away behind a gas station just off I-77 in Dobson, NC. Breakfast is awesome as well. I had a bacon double cheeseburger and my wife had the special of the day (BBQ ribs). The ribs were already off the bone, served on a plate with wonderful sides. They tasted great! Burger was one of the best I've had. I highly recommend this place. I noticed a lot of locals dine here for breakfast and lunch, as the place gets very crowded. Staff is always very nice and keep your drinks full. Please stop here and try it out. You'll love it ! read more

Always looking for good places to eat, this fits it. Two of our friends took us after a local Doctor recommended it to them. With about 20 cars in the lot, I thought that said a lot. The friends said that was less than usual. We had the prime rib and chef salad. It was excellent!!! Don't let the "dated" look fool you. Clean off the interstate diner. Nice friendly patrons and staff. It is a low price point, do as long as expectations on fresh is not to high. Turkey lunch was a over sliced size of deli meat with a gravy sauce. Now the beets were canned and not doctored up and tasted just fine, the mashed potato was called buttered potatoes. It is a quick in and out, beats chains anytime. Open till 8p and they do a big take out business. I think drinks come with the six dollar special, if not they forgot to charge us.
