She is remarkable, and her teaching has benefitted me tremendously. I am sleeping better and have more energy, strength, and flexibility. When I arrived, my yoga experience was quite basic. I had very little flexibility. She is a patient teacher, and she guided me and the other students through the challenges of certain postures. My practice improved greatly thanks to her. She is very observant, and also extremely intuitive. She offers modified poses for newbies like me, or advanced variations, for those who have a stronger practice. The practice has a spiritual side, too, and Colleen is an excellent guide here, also. While calling the poses by their Sanskrit names, she offers a focus on the breath, encouraging students to get out of their heads when they practice. Classes end on the chant of Om (peace), and in poses, sometimes mantras are given, such as "I am peace." Another favorite of mine is the So Hum meditation. I love the spiritual side, and I feel that students who don't get this are really missing something key. The setting at Seeking Solace is so wonderful, too, and the first thing you notice when entering the studio is what a special place it is. People have posted photos, but they don't do justice to the place. It is at once grounding and energizing, clean and harmonious. You feel good when you enter, and it also feels like a sacred space, a safe haven away from the hustle and bustle of the world. The room offers a view of a peaceful rock garden where there are flowers, and when I was there, in the Fall, a couple of pumpkins. Colleen's knowledge extends also to nutrition and anatomy. During class, as poses are being done, she offers information about the way the joints, muscles, and ligaments all come together. She also points out when doing certain poses can help in our daily lives, and can even help people to avoid surgeries later. In contrast, I had previously practiced at studios with rooms heated to 95 degrees, where it was all about how much you can sweat and how to show off your moves. Here, it's quite the opposite. Seeking Solace is about finding lasting benefit, with a top-notch teacher, in a friendly group of yogis. I highly recommend Seeking Solace.

The classes are a…read moregentle mix of yoga and pilates, which is good for me as a 72 year old in reasonably good shape. Colleen is very thorough in instructing and uses lots of imagery ("imagine your spine is a string of pearls") which helps foster the learning to know one's body. In the studio she is very attentive to each student and watches to assist poses. The space is warm, clean, visually appealing, and orderly. The classes I attend are restorative, I would say, where some props are used. This is not the tpe of class where more time is spent arranging than actually engaging your body.. She also instructs in how to modify a pose or movement and givers space to do that depending on your needs. What has been helpful for me personally is stretching of muscle groups, and the attention paid to moving hip and shoulder joints which are often problem areas for seniors. Yesterday's session involved legs and hips--"drawing circles on the ceiling", doing bridges, and more than I can't recall right now. We also take time to shake out muscles after movement. Within 12 hours I had some relief of pain, which says a lot about the benefits of this work.

She makes you feel so comfortable and challenges me just enough physically and mentally. She's so down to earth and funny. The studio has a variety of classes for beginners and advanced yogis. There are multiple events, such as hiking and yoga or headstand clinics. They even held a yoga teacher training program this year. The donation based yoga really builds a sense of community for this studio. I want to keep this place a secret, but this place really deserves 5 stars and to thrive!

I can honestly say it was one of the better yoga experiences I've had in my year of practicing weekly. The studio itself is perfectly designed. Calming and simple. Some nice murals and a wonderful water sculpture. The lights were left low, which is my preference. The class itself was a standard vinyasa flow. The teacher (I forgot her name, but she is an owner) definitely knew what she was doing and led the class confidently but with a nice sense of humor. The set was challenging in just the right way. For the poses I knew were be beyond my current practice, we were offered alternatives. My favorite aspect of the studio is that they keep the spiritual aspect of the practice in place (but not overbearingly so). You are reminded to stay present. You close with OM. I have a hard time with teachers who treat this like its solely an aerobics class. This is not the case here. Planning on going back any time I'm in KC.

First off, I have never taken an actual yoga class in my life. I way prefer the privacy of my own home, where I can wear my old sweats, stop and go as I please, and most importantly, there's no one there to laugh when I fall and make a huge ass out of myself ;) Anyways, I will totally admit that I have always been crazy intimidated when it comes to just walking into a yoga studio. I can never figure out what level class is best for me, I don't want to irritate anyone and be in the way of the pros, and I prefer to just disappear into the background when a move is beyond me - and def not be called out in front of everyone. Anyways, at this studio the classes are for all levels - so there was no need to play a guessing game trying to figure out which one would work for me. And Gretchen...man, she was cool. I felt totally comfortable w/ her - in fact, I told her right off the bat that I was worried my scoliosis was screwing w/ some of my poses. She even made sure during class to point out the poses that would be most affected by it, and made the necessary adjustments. During one of the classes I even had the opportunity to do some partner work, and with Gretchen's help tried some poses - like a handstand - that I doubt I would just try w/ anyone else. In the end, I got exactly what I came here for. I didn't need to worry about bringing a suitcase filled w/ props - I just came right from my hotel, grabbed a mat, and was ready to go. Everyone in the class was welcoming - I didn't feel like I was stepping on anyone's toes, and I truly felt all levels were welcome. I learned new things and gained the confidence that I was on the right path in terms of my practice - and I appreciated the positive feedback and adjustments Gretchen made to my poses. I was able to pick up a few tips and after being home for just a week, I've learned that a few minor adjustments can make a world of difference. So...I have a feeling that for the time being I'll still be a stay-at-home yogi, but next time I'm in the neighborhood I will definitely be back.

Every session feels super personalized -- she really pays attention to what my body needs and adjusts things to make sure I'm doing the movements correctly and safely. I've never felt rushed or overlooked in class. Sabrina takes the time to explain everything clearly and always checks in on how I'm feeling, which makes such a difference. I genuinely look forward to every session -- it's challenging in the best way and I always leave feeling stronger and more energized. They have yoga, barre, hot flow, and my personal favorite, sculpt classes (think yoga moves mixed with free weights and cardio bursts). I love the 5:45am work out classes as I can get a great workout in and be home and showered before kids need to go to school and I need to go to work. Now let's talk about the teachers, Katelyn, Claire, Avery, Kennedy, and Kayla, keep me motivated to get up in the mornings. If all goes well I love going to a Ricky class on the weekends! Highly recommend this place! So welcoming regardless of where you are at physically! I feel stronger and more energized, which is saying a lot as I have entered in to my fourth decade of life, but it's all because of this studio. Grab a friend and come!

Attended a yoga class at 0830 am on a Snow Sunday Morning today and had a great time and workout!…read moreThe class was a Community Yelp event spearheaded by Kieu, Yelp KC Community Coordinator. I've done yoga before and actually had a membership at a yoga studio in LA in the past, but after not doing it for 2 years, I was a little apprehensive to get back into it. Luckily, the instructor today was very chill and gave a class fitting to beginners and more geared for a relaxing time than an intense strength/endurance test. She was very clear with the instructions and with only 9 attendees there, she was able monitor us and made comments/tips to help us get the best out of the class. She was very personable, nice and had lovely stories to share. It was a very personalized class as opposed to feeling like she made it the same for every class. All the mats, blocks, straps, blankets, and pillow were available to use for class. Perfect for those who don't have all the equipment! Facility was clean and the bathroom was clean. The Yelp KC Community Coordinator, Kieu, provided healthy snacks and drinks after the class. Thanks for making this event possible! It was a donation yoga class, but I like how the instructor didn't hound us on giving a tip or donation. She just made it an option if we could, which was nice. I did end up tipping and luckily she took credit cards!

I am not very flexible or balanced but it didn't matter! We had props to help and make us feel comfortable. Our class was very relaxed, not super full and relaxing. Our instructor chose to do a more beginner level / relaxed class since some of us hadn't done yoga before. As usual, the instructor was in the front of the class but she still made her way around the room. If one of us was doing a position incorrectly or needed a little guidance, she was gentle in handling​ and helping us. I didn't feel silly if I fell over or had her come help me. They had mats, blocks, straps and blankets available​. Which, thank goodness, because I don't own any of these! After the class, our coordinator had snacks and drinks set up for after the class. I'm very glad the class wasn't canceled due to the scary weather and I will for sure be looking into taking up some classes here!
