I refuse to go to any nail salons on Ocean Avenue any longer. I strolled up West Portal Ave in hopes of finding a salon that was close to Dimitra's. I had a good parking place, I did not feel like venturing too far up the Ave. Lo and behold, I saw Vaso's. I approached the receptionist and she directed me to "Shelly" who miracles of miracles on a Friday afternoon had no customers. Shelly was very polite. I told her I needed a manicure and pedicure. She invited me to sit down and offered me some water. The first thing that made me say that Vaso's and Shelly are my new nail place, was when Shelly pulled out a fresh vacum-seal sugical pack of nail tools(a cuticle mover,a clipper, etc). West Portal Nail Salons are an upgrade for me. I had been going to salons that will go un-mentioned because I contracted a nail fungus infection of my toes from on of them. I have been dealing with this fungus for quite a few years now. I am really sensitive about my feet. I avoid getting them done because I don't want them to get worse. I am not taking a phamaceutical to get rid of the fungus. I know with a professional I can grow out and manage my toe problem. I have not had a manicure in forever because I did not trust these other salons' tools on my hands. Yuck! I received a manicure and pedicure from Shelly. This was one beauty treatment I could just sit back and relax with. I did not have to worry about any pain from pushing or clearing out the dead cuticle. It was painless. Flawless application. Efficient. I guess I have put up so long with my skin being nicked or cut. I mentioned this to Shelly. She said "that is how the infection is spread". Well I thought I was getting a deal at the Ocean Ave salons. I see I got what I paid for. For an excellent manicure, pedicure, and eyebrow wax(perfecto), $47.00 without tip. She got a nice tip. I have to upgrade. This is my new spot. I don't mind sharing my gems. I checked the reviews of other salons on West Portal Ave on Yelp. I am so glad I have found this nail salon near my new body salon. I can finish my ritual all on on avenue. This is also 5 minutes from my house. No more downtown either. Yipee.

I have friends that now go to her, and am constantly singing her praise to people looking for a good stylist. Kat is not only great at what she does, but she is very up to date on that latest trends in hair care. She has a warm personality, and you feel like you have a new friend the minute you leave her chair. She is very willing to listen to you and suggest things that you may not have thought about. We have gone from being a brunette, to highlights and now the transition to showing my grays. She has walked me through the emotional steps of how that can feel, to embracing my new look. If you are looking for a new stylist, or feel like you just want to try someone else for a bit, Kat is your stylist. You won't be sorry. I highly recommend her.

They charge $35 for all haircuts, no matter if they're adults or children. No appointments taken - just walk right in, and the place was empty for me. Cash only. They had a special booster for kids, but nothing cute like a little airplane or anything like that. They gave her the same little poncho they would give adults, and it just looked so cute on my daughter. Generally the haircut was super fast, only taking about 15 mins, and my toddler did surprisingly well. However, the lady cutting my hair didn't hear what length I wanted. I wanted it shoulder length for her, and it looked like what she cut was only an 1-2" shorter than her original length. So basically, she had to go back and redo the whole haircut. This is when my toddler started to lose it. Thankful for the screentime, a little goes a long way, and her haircut looks wonderful. She layered it, and really fixed up her bangs. At the end of the visit, she offered a balloon. My daughter and I got excited, until the lady just opened a bag of deflated balloons, and asked if I wanted to blow it up. Really? I just tipped you $10...I was hoping you'd blow it up with helium in the back! There's some metered parking in the area, but also free parking that's down the block...down a hill FYI. Mixed feelings if I want to return. It was close, convenient, and although the haircutter did a good job with the haircut, it was annoying she couldn't just listen to me from the beginning. Sigh.

Judy was so nice and understands hair so well. My hair can grow out really long and heavy. She knew exactly how to thin it out and what length fit well with my face and frame. She even gave me layers that will look good when it grows out. She's also a great person to talk to while getting your haircut. There was no sense of any awkwardness during our haircut conversation. She's a kind lady that loves her family. I can't wait until I bring my toddler to come get her haircut with her because I hear she's really patient with younger kids. She goes through a slow learning process to help them feel comfortable. If you haven't been here yet and you've been thinking about it, you should really come.
