Although I did take out, I was super impressed with the quality of the fish for the price! The cashier was super sweet upon greeting and even explained that they had a customer loyalty program which I think is charming and definitely attracts people to return. I was returning home, but wanted to catch the sunset somewhere off the PCH to enjoy a light meal. Unfortunately, I didn't find a spot till dark but got to enjoy it off the coast and under the stars. I got the Kyoto, salmon maki, and spicy tuna hand roll. To start, one thing I enjoyed was that they give you sauce containers which is super helpful to dip the sushi and a nice little added touch. Wish they included sriracha or a hot sauce but that may have fallen on me for not asking. NOTE: the rice to fish ratio was absolutely on point! The tuna hand roll was light with a slight kick, so a little more heat would have been nice. The salmon maki was perfect and well-centered. And now for the main course, the nigiri. This is the go-to place when my father-in-law craves sushi and just wants to fill up his belly. We'll order their Sakura Platter and we've rolls for the whole family with a side of market sashimi for a little sushi party at home. Service (5/5): You can call in and they'll have a platter ready for you in 15-20 minutes. No fuss, and they'll give you everything you need. The person at the front is always pleasant. Ambiance (3/5): Nothing really sticks out. It's a well-decorated place, but I have to admit, I've only eaten in once, as we often just grab and go. However, I do see families hanging out and like that they have an outdoor covered seating with plastic covers on the sides too to keep out flies and street pollution. Food (4/5): This is not quality sushi by any means, but it hits well just the same. When you want to stuff your face with CA rolls, spicy tuna rolls and salmon rolls without breaking the bank, this place has you covered. While the rolls tasted more or less the same, they were still satisfying and hit the spot. In terms of food, price, and intentionality, here is what I liked: two of the rolls featured shrimp tempura with a perfect crunch. Another roll had boiled ebi (not tempura), which was very tasty, and the fourth roll topped with salmon was satisfying. A solid spot for sushi and other fast Japanese fare. I ordered some takoyaki and a couple of pieces of sushi for lunch. The takoyaki was only around $6 for about 4, and they were nicely fried and crunchy on the outside with the creamy octopus inside and complimented with mayo, takoyaki sauce, and bonito flakes. I ordered salmon and ikura sushi. I love sushi when it looks like the emoji lol and they also hit the spot. Delicious quick food aside, I want to talk about how great the service was. I was advised while ordering to get other specific items so I can save money. My review is based off of nostalgia and the fact of actually visiting a Sushi Boy brick and mortar. Back in 1999 I went to the Sushi Boy location inside Marukai's food court. I was then introduced to a roll that I highly judged because 1. it wasn't fish based 2. there was lettuce in it 3. I knew this thing would fall apart when picked up. What I didn't know is the magic behind a simple combination adding their teriyaki sauce. Its been some years that Sushi Boy left the Marukai food court and I felt I was at a loss on this roll. Since I don't live in the South Bay area it is a huge trek to come down just for sushi. Marukai is an exception since my mother's church is nearby and she loves to do her Japanese food shopping their. The roll that I'm raving about is their Chicken Maki. Simple: rice, chicken, lettuce, sesame seeds. When you add their teriyaki sauce, it is all good! This past weekend I had plans to visit the area and made a point to come to Sushi boy before heading to my destination. I had a couple of friends with me. It was their first time. I told them it is fast food sushi but its pretty good and the price is just right. 90% of the items in the photos of this review were my friend's order and they killed everything. Even the salad. The person at the register was really helpful as well. There is a menu up above and behind the register but when I asked for the chicken maki he showed me a more extensive menu that was laid out on the countertop. He also brought the order out to our table and while not knowing a key is needed to use the restroom, he handed it to me before even asking. On April 17th ,we ordered from here, little did we know what was waiting for us a few hours later. When I tell you my husband and I got violently ill in a matter of a few hours , it is no joke. Before they say maybe it wasn't them, my husband and I both ate the same thing and it was the only meal we ate exactly the same so we know. The first five days were brutal, after the first week my husband started slowly getting better, while I was not. I avoided going to the doctor because there isn't much they can do about food poisoning or a stomach bug. I let myself go 19 days before I ended up in the emergency room, severely dehydrated and found out I didn't have a stomach bug. I had salmonella poisoning. We didn't have any type of poultry from here of course but we do think there was some sort of cross contamination and our order got it! I went to get a California roll here today (Saturday, July 6 / 4:10p/ Gustavo was the cashier). When I entered restaurant, the cashier was chatting with his girlfriend who was hanging around the counter. No other customers were in the restaurant. As I stood waiting to order, I noticed that the cashier was using his bare hand to wipe his nose and rub his eyes. I decided to order anyway. In my Sushi mood, yet again. Wanted to try a new place. Was searching around, and I came across Sushi Boy. Saw that they offer Sushi platters/party trays. This is really great, for parties, functions, coworker potlucks, etc. So since they had party trays on the menu, decided to go with that. I ordered the 40 piece, Sakura Party Tray. It comes with California Roll, Spicy Tuna Roll, and Salmon Roll. I feel the tray is a very nice variety. I had ordered online, for takeout/pickup. The restaurant inside is very nice, and the employees were also nice. The rolls themselves taste fantastic. It comes with ginger, as well as plenty of Wasabi and Soy Sauce. The California Roll is perfect. The Spicy Tuna Roll is excellent. The Salmon Roll is marvelous. This is a really great Sushi Spot, and the Party Tray option they had on the menu, was very convenient.
